The Volkswagen Golf is a classy and well-built rival to the Ford Focus. Its neat interior, class leading refinement and smart looks cement its place as one of the most desirable cars in its class. The extensive model range gives choice for all budgets, the TSI petrol engines being smooth and the turbodiesels being strong on economy. The GTI and R models are sporting models that compete with the likes of the Ford Focus ST and RS, but neither is cheap.
Refinement is high on the Golf's agenda -- and from the driver's seat, it's as quiet as a luxury car. That raises it above rivals like the Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra for outright comfort. Built quality is first rate across the entire range, from the entry S models right up to the enjoyable GTI and R range-toppers. Smaller TSI petrol engines deliver above expectations, TDI diesels offer punchy performance and excellent economy, while the clever DSG automatic gearbox option is smooth and easy to operate.

Mat still looks the same even after 10 years
He's smaller now
He looks older, that's the only difference
Drove golf, loved it. Then moved to other brands. OK , but, I think golf is the best of the small hatches. Standard setter. Moved to bigger segment , but still longing those young years in my Golf. Maybe one day I will buy Golf for myself again.
Hugi Hugo is it as reliable as honda or mazda? also i hear that golf's maintaining costs is high
rolla VW cars are not as reliable as you would think they are.
My mother has this car & I'm learning in it. I enjoy driving it so much.
I own a 2012 Golf 1.6TDI 90hp. It's done 40k miles, averages between 60-70mpg. Engine is quiet and refined, power delivery is linear and smooth. It has 10mm lower suspension (sport suspension, 16inch alloys) than standard and altough the ride isn't silky it doesn't annoy you.
Chassis is very composed, it doesn't get upset by potholes and the car has very little body roll.
The best thing is sound insulation and cabin refinement, it really feels upmarket.
Car is serviced every 10k miles and didn't have any issues yet.

I’ll buy it off ya for £1.5p
How was yours only 90. Mines 105
@@letsplaygames5971 different markets.. still have it, mostly satisfied, but there were costly problems with dpf and egr..
@@vjetarukosi123 ahh I see got it as my first car within 2 weeks engine light came on and diesal managment light were on been 4 months still here. Been checked told me nothing is wrong just need to clean the dpf, due to go to a proper mechanic next month
Know it old but I got myself a 2010 1.4 tsi turbo and it amazing to drive front and back parking sensor and sat nav worth the money better than my Audi A1 love this car review 😀
Just got one the same
As a kid, which i am, Carbuyer has opened my eyes to elegant looking, sporty handling and practical cars which are also economical :D
Just test drove a 2010 1.2 petrol 3 door today and honestly it was brilliant. So comfortable
*update*
Ive now decided to buy it and since buying it only a week ago its performed well. Very responsive steering and brilliant acceleration! Very happy so far.
Hello! How’s it been for the last year? Any problems or particular good or not so good things I should bear in mind if I was to buy? Cheers
I have the model with the 2.5-liter inline five.
@@stevenmaginnis1965 there is no mk6 with a 2.5? Im sure
@@SD-xt2go Well, I have one!
@@stevenmaginnis1965 aftermarket engine swap
been driving Golf TSI for more than 2 months now.. enjoying every minutes in it, no regret owning it..
I used to own a Golf VI TSI (122PS). It was a great little car with excellent fuel economy and practicality. In fact it left such an impression on me that I bought a GTI when I returned back to the states.
I own a 2010 Golf TDI. It really is an amazing car. I would definately recomend it
I'm in the US and just bought a leftover 2010 2 door Golf. What a beautiful car. It has the NA market 5 cylinder engine, of which I was a tad leery, as I've only driven 4 cylinders, and didn't want to sacrifice fuel economy too drastically. I've been pleasantly surprised by the fact that i'm getting 2 MPG more in the city, though 3 less out on the highway as compared to the Hyundai Elantra I had previously (which I must state is a solid choice for those not craving that German feel).
Golf 6 the legend
I have had a Golf since March 2002. The engine has never failed me.
I had Escort & Metro prior to the Golf and they always had problems with engine. Golf has never let me down. Good reliable car. German cars are good.
Riaz Ladhani yhh brah
Still got it??
Its a very good car , I own one ... Its very comforable to drive and you feel secure inside..
I would take a Golf any day but I prefer the typical 1.6 litre petrol engine.
Luuu B. You mean petrol 1.6 i? Not tsi right? Cuz i am looking the same model
This is a very informative page enabling those that need to make a relistic choice on what car to purchase, by highlighting the key areas and downsides. Im sold on the Golf!!! x
Its 2017 and this car from 2007 looks the same like the new one from 2017...
It's from 2009 actually ;)
Golfs just slowly evolve while still keeping the same shape and quality, my mk5 Gti still looks fresh
I love this guys reviews especially the water in the doorbin test
German quality
1:50 How did he do that without it stalling? Matt Magic.
The engine is off
Have a golf 1.6 tdi dsg 2012 lovely in every aspect DSG the ultimate dream drive for the long journeys. And local U.K. …
How is the gearbox reliability now? And the mechatronics unit has issues or no?
@711leon Things change along with time. =). But if you do say so, I did try on me Golf, and I can't actually seem to move the seat base forward. All I can do is move the seat back down?
I have one I give it five star's I love when you press the badge to open the trunk😎
I have a mk4 golf. And it is the most upmarket, superb car for a 17 year old i have ever driven in my life. Golf 4 Life.
it's such a good looking hatchback, the design and quality is impressive.
Looking at the negatives
1. The fact that it looks clean and simple is one of it's best features!
2. It's the same story with the interior, the astra just looks tacky.
This car(well, the GTI) more than anything is what I have my sights set on when I graduate college. If I can get a GTI then my life will be set, I will be able to conquer armies, probably.
oo shut up u all ! i have vw golf mk4 , 2000' , 1.9tdi 66kw , 200.000km and its superb ! never had some bigger issues with him , only normal services every 8.000km . VW FOR LIFE !
I love my mk6 golf! i have done 12367 thousand klm and is running smoothly and enjoying to driving it everyday! love it!
Wait till it gets 100k
@@new25651 what happens after?
I've got the GTI for over 6 months now, worth every penny !
I had driving lessons with VV Golf 1.4 TSI and I really enjoyed it. Despite it's terribly boring looks I've thinking about owning it.
I just got one a few months ago. the only complaint i have is the lack of alloy wheels. it's great to drive, the engine is almost totally silent when you aren't accelerating hard.
im loving your reviews and thank you for that but i really think you should talk about the sound systems a little bit. not in each review but if they're really good in a specific car, you should
Cheers! and keep doing what you're doing.
Golf's reliability? All the reliability index figures might be missing some key data. For example, there are no ratings per version. Say, Volkswagen Golf comes with engine ranges from 80 PS-168PS. The type of driver who will go for 168PS engine and the amount of abuse the car will go through will equate to more chances for the car going to garage. But minus marks for Golfs reliability. For a car like Kia Picanto, customers are more careful, less chances for garage time, top reliability ratings.
i have a golf 6 and i had it for two years it never brokedown nt once
Carwow, you havent changed much since 😃
Matt hasn't changed his enthusiasm
buy it ! the car is so simple and comfy i wouldnt say no to one i want a mk4 golf and they are just fantastic!
Did anyone else notice at 0:49 the ve badge on the back wwas flipped up and then flipped itself down by itself. Why.....
Vw not ve
It's the camera under the vw
Thats how you open the boot
Yes but the camera ist there too
I know that... sure u already said that
I have recently bought the GTi version. It's just so fun and fast!
Love my 2010 golf
Funny to watch it after carwow stuff )
Great review! Is there any reason carbuyer hasn't reviewed the Golf GTI?
LOL that rear camera looks like a 007 technology
Thanks for this! I'm thinking about buying a Golf and wanted to check out some reviews.
Golf and GTI = legendary pedigree. GREAT cars!
Am i the only one noticing that at 0:50 the boot isn't closed properly?
This guy does really good reviews
i wouldn't say he is, i think he is great at seeing things from both points of view.
volkswagen is just a very good car make.
@jumpbike Can't do that for a Golf. The seat base doesn't move forward against the front seats. The best one can do to fold down the seats would be like what the guy did in the video. =)
What a great reviewer!!
Golf- world's best car!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i have been enjoying the carbuyer reviews. full of information that i need to know.
But, how do i choose which car too buy ?
Does car buyer do any videos comparing say 3 cars at same time ?
It would be useful for conclussions, which are the top 3 in order, fiesta size, focus size, modeo size, merc s-class size.
The difference in perception of VW quality between the U.S. and Europe is interesting. It would seem that they either build better products for you or the comparison vehicles are much worse. I know of four people who bought VWs. Only one still has it and is happy with the car (a diesel). The others have all switched to Honda or Toyota models and are glad they did. Multiple break-downs and service issues prompted their moves. I switched from M.B. to Lexus and will never go back.
After formerly owning I've of these long term I feel like it's the best built golf ever with the least reliable engine lineup.
Newer golfs are more dependable but feel less upmarket inside and don't have the same solidity
Did you have an automatic? I'm not sure about the reliability of them
That music from «How its made» LOOOOOL
has the golf got a usb input like the astra?
awesome review btw x
i really like this guy's review
I have a 62 dark blue 2.0 high spec vw golf with 39K miles and runs great
Best reviewers around
i want a golf too since the day i climbed into one..
Matt Watson :O
my dad has a golf 1985 a daily driver ,alot o people say they don,t make them like they used to, i say , in this case they still do,,,,,,,,, rock solid.
why the f do they complain about those seats not bending flat enough. How often do you care furniture in your car ?
I don´t get it about the camera. Why it pops out from the badge, doesn´t it interfere with the rear gate opening mechanism? I am sure it doesn´t, but seems a rather awkward mechanism for it. Just place it leveled on the rear bumper and don´t complicate with a "popping out" mechanism, lol...
I'm getting mine next week! Very excited =]
So how's the car's experience for the last ten years mate
What an excited reviewer
what about the reliability level of golf? is it as good as honda or mazda?
rolla noooo way we have one and i hate it
LOL it actually doesn't rain that much here, it's just everyone here complains about the weather. I don't think its as bad as people make out - I was in Germany a few months ago and it seemed to have the same weather as back in the UK (I had family at home and was talking to them about the weather). The weather in the UK isn't as predictable but that doesn't really matter as you can just check the weather forecast online and know what the day will be like. There are a lot of clouds though.
What model is this ?
And is it fuel efficient?
Im looking to get a golf - but i'd love for it to be economical as well !
Getting one tomorrow 1.2 tsi 2011 😊
Wanna buy it also on a very fair price
Dont, garbage motor
That is a manual transmission car and he selected reverse gear @ 1:48, camera popped out OK but how did you LEAVE the car ?!?!
So, which one is better: the VW Golf or the New Hyundai i30?
Cool thanks for the great info mate!!!
@crocodile2006 Having extensively driven both the Polo and the Golf, I have to say the Golf is far more satisfying to drive, and is much more smooth and refined than the Polo. The Polo is easier around town and to park but that's about the only way it's more beneficial than the Golf. There's also a whole lot more room in the Golf and it just feels higher quality. Speed depends on which engine you get and the Golf will stand up better on the used market.
I have same car
But turbo sound is not good
Wt can I do boss?
What type of golf was this ?
How is its fuel economy ?
Im really looking to get a golf - but i'd love for it to be fuel efficient as well
i just wondered what the cars are that you british people have at your driving school. in germany it's mostly vw Golf, audi a3, bmw x1 and Vw tiguan. i drove a golf. what are you using?
You can’t really go wrong with a Golf, it’s a sensible choice
i always love these reviews but i didnt understand why Mat is being crazy about Vw cars this much..until the day i got in to a Golf of my friend as a passenger at rear seats.i understand him now..
@dnaniell Are you 5 years old? You can put a car in reverse even though you aren't moving. And the camera apears whenever you put it in reverse.
In Polo and Passat rear seats fold completely flat and in Golf not? what were VW thinking!?
@alexlovesmac so what you are saying is you can't reach to the back of the squab, give it a hard pull and fold it forward enabling the seats to fold 100% flat as featured in pretty much any golf or polo since 1981?
I wish. I saved every cent so i could afford a beautiful car like this. I love driving it, its a fantastic thing.
Wait is this Mat Watson? Lmaooo
the engine isn't running so it can't stall..he just turned the key to the on position without starting the engine
2:00 Wait how does that work? If you put it in reverse you have to have the clutch down when not moving yet you manage to wander out to the back.
@dnaniell Handbrake, maybe? Or maybe the car doesn't need to be running at all? The camera apears if you put it in reverse, even if the car is running or not?
Hi, Can someone tell me exactly which golf he has here? like what year and model because I want the exact same one with the rear camera
Vw golf match
did you ever had a volkswagen what modell and and what was wrong with it i have a golf 6 and i love it it has not break down at all
I must have watched this review at least 10 times now... sooo wish I could get this car..
9 years later.....well did you get it?
@@megataurus7779 Wow, what a blast from the past.. I did buy it in the end and I actually still own it as well! I've had it for just over 5 years now, which tells you it took about 4 years after that comment until I actually got it haha! Its been a great car for me over the years, and I'll probably be moving on from it within the next year. Thanks so much for commenting btw, this was a real nostalgia trip... so surprising to find out I had wanted this car 4 years before I actually ended up getting it.
@@UltimateDragonite hey thanks for replying! Glad you got it in the end,I have just purchased a 2 litre tdi golf myself and liking it so much! All the best👍
@MacGyver920 maybe its because the handbrake, but i don´t see him activating it.
You do know that the VW 1.4 TSI has won the Engine Of The Year award (in its class) for the last 7 years running.....right?
Is it reliable?
does VW sell 5inch tft screen standard version in UK at all? or they only sell 5.8' TFT screen modules? Ihave been looking for golf 7 with a very basic 5inch TFT screen in UK for quite some time now, but had no luck.
What kind of golf is it? like is it the 2.0 tdi or the tsi or what?
With the ban for petrol and diesel's coming in 2024 I would suggest to buy one of these beauty's as soon as possible because you wont be able to finance. The dealerships wont be allowed to sell them by then.
Since when is there a ban on petrols and diesels in 2024? Haha
I've realized this vid is a little biased. when doing the example of rear leg room on this one, he went to the passengers side to test it. but with the fiesta, he used the drivers side. and complained it was too cramped.... hm
On a 2009 golf without buttons on the steering can you still set the speed your going on the dash?
Would that transmission tunnel make it difficult for someone to sit in the middle? :/
Not fake. Just they do not have all the necesary information.
