I like the original 1st gen R129 more than the later versions which look like tuning victims.

The first generation had a more consistent design inside and out, with a chiseled and angular look.

The best SL of them all, modern enough and at the same time… the last of the true well engineered and timeless Benz. The last of the manual SLs as well . R129,W140,W202,W124 and pre merger W210 (facelift models if 210 are easier to drive but feels cheap compared to prefacelift) will always be the Last if the true Benzes. Thats why i daily drive my W140 in the District of Columbia. Mine got no BAS and also both gas/brake pedals are helluva job to depress. Im feeling some type of weird pain on my right leg just because of it. But its all worth it…i mean just look at them!!! Cant take my eyes off those masterpieces mentioned above.
And almost forgot: mpg is really really hurting my pockets… im used to filling up $5-$10 a day and never refilled twice… but now…since dailying the panzer for 3 years…i have never filled the tank all the way up…its just impossible. Gas pumps stop at $100 in the states afaik. And $100 even on regular is still quarter tank away from full…the W140 Mercedes got the Largest fuel tank capacity of any 4 door sedan, to date. It is 26.4 gallons (100 Liters) that is bigger than most SUVs. For example the GMT800 chevy Tahoe got 30 gallons. Its just 3 milk jugs bigger than the W140. And even if u have the 320, since the car is too heavy it takes too much energy to move 4800lbs 1950kg ~2Tons (100 pounds/50kilos leas than the Tahoe)…u see what i mean? If u are doing mostly city driving, one might be better off with the S420 than the S320. But, nothing beats the M104 straight 6 of those 320s…basically a german 2Jz. Ready for boost , reliable AF, easy to maintain. The M120 V12 (ofc the W140,R129,C140 comes with a V12 404hp *detuned to 389 after first year*) is basically two M104s mated together…just imagine two stout inline 6s propelling that cathedral….its just impossible to not talk about this hell of a machine. ✌🏽

The dark blue on the first facelift looks very nice. It is a similar colour that I am after for a 280CE W123.

Im pro for 1 gen. Design is where it meant to be by Sacco. It is a boxy design from start so the facelift with the round looks is strange to me. The second facelift looks better than the first. Rear tail lamps for example look great on the car. Still I prefer 1st. And not with the 8 holes wheels, 10 holes look far better. 👍🏻
    Great video

You mean the 15-hole Gullideckel rims? Yes, they look amazing on the 1st gen R 129.

Yes 🙌 I mean the 15 Gullideckel! 😊 Thx 🙏🏻 I own a 500 SL 1993. All orginal. With Gullideckel, orginal stereo, amber signal lights in the front etc. Black with light grey leather interior. Fantastic looking car ❤️

Interesting my 1995 sl 320 (nov 94) has pre face lift body, but color match cladding and I can confirm it’s original

Owners can specify colour matched claddings if they so wished.

Worth noting the amber\clear front indicators spanned across later 1st gen cars into the earlier 2nd gen before finally changing to all clear on the later ones. It also looks like the mesh in your 320 front side vents is shiny metal is that correct? Im also not sure on your year designation - I was under the impression 1st facelift was 96 MY, yet you are stating 95. I have a 95 and its definitely 1st gen!

This car was built in November 1995, according to the build records. The first facelift was in September 1995. Most likely your car was built prior to September 1995. The side vents on this car are (brittle) plastic as far as we're aware.

I am not a fan of the "Sacco panels" in their original two-tone form. I think they weighted down the cars visually and made them look ponderous. The cars looked far better when the two-toning was removed.

First Gen. Facelift breaks with the original Design. For instance the mirrors are shaped concavely.

I like first gen more because simpler straight line design bumper and skirts match the body style more. Later facelifts look like Mexican ricer mods. The two tone exterior however I strongly dislike on the first gen. Looking for 300SL for my next project. Why 300? Because it’s the only model that comes with manual, and it’s more lighter.

The 1st series is the good one, the '94s have modern engines, still the original classy design and 1/2 boxy design
The 2nd series lost most of the boxiness but wasn't too bad when you compared to the 3rd series
The 3rd series was a ruin, the awesome M104 DOHC 24v I6 was replaced with the M112 SOHC 18v V6 and the awesome M119 DOHC 32v DOHC V8 was replaced with the less powerful M113 SOHC 24v V8, the M120 V12 at least was untouched. The design got destroyed with the tacked in R170 round mirrors

    • @HLClassics
      @HLClassics  2 года назад +2

We love the first generation purist design that is just so consistent throughout. No-nonsense, angular lines that gives the car a solid and chiseled look, exactly as how Bruno Sacco envisioned it.

Isn't it true that you shouldn't buy a right hand drive r129 because the quality is inferior and less skilled and knowledgeable drivers over all buy them?
