GO PRO FEEDBACK : The "fish eye" type effect of the wide angle isn't nice to watch. It's distracting, and kinda makes my head hurt. Not so bad for fixed shots, but Mrs. Wizard moving around is MUCH better with the handycam. And on the intro, you can see how the lens smudges the lights in the background. The white balance in the interior is terrible - the light is too strong, and in too limited an area. And as it's positioned behind the camera, there is a shadow of the camera. Not great. Not sure why you changed, but please go back to a handycam. Just my suggestion. A great car and video as always

Nah nah nah, 93, 94, and 95 are the best years for the R129 specifically the 500 (the 600 is a bit of a different story), those years come with a better transmission than the super early cars , and with the interior that Bruno Sacco himself designed for the car, the interior that it was meant to have in it. It’s perfect, not too 90s yet but far enough along that the driving is a bit better than the early models…

The M113 and M112 are great engines. Plug changes with valve cover gasket repair is the best process. Getting to those plugs with VC on is a bear. Typical leaking is found at; the oil separator, oil filter housing, timing cover plug and cam plug. The exhaust manifold is marked A/B for plug wire corresponding to the coil packs marked A/B and K/G for wire (length) designation on the plug caps.

    I’ve had a 1996 R129 SL 500 for eight years.
Believe it or not I still occasionally get a thumbs up on the road, particularly with the top off.
Although it was a one owner car the owner had pretty much neglected it other than oil changes for some years. I’ve probably spent $20,000 in maintenance bringing it back. Including a new factory remanufactured five speed transmission
This transmission is now pretty much bulletproof as long as you change the fluids and filters every 40 to 60,000 miles however it went through about three major revisions until by 2000it was pretty well sorted out.
The main problem with finding these cars is that with them being so inexpensive at the moment a lot of them have been neglected in maintenance.
And a lot of owners in these forums like to brag about how low mileage their cars have what their garage queens and I like to tell them take it on a cross-country trip and you’ll start seeing some problems generally.
But it’s a car that Mercedes-Benz chief of design at the time, Bruno Sacco, said that it’s one of his best designs

After checking all over the place for a short or fault. Found it was just a simple fuse. However after checking the fuses. I have a 1999 320 that looks the same as the Wizard's with 102k on it. Owned it 6 years now - best car I ever had even better that the 2007 CLS320 CDI driven by the wife - another future classic in my view - the car not my wife! My SL has always had an ever so slight oil leak on the timing cover - its like mist not liquid - been told its common and to ignore it - so far so good. Changed out the ECU on the hood and got a lifetime guarantee on the rebuild. Problem with these cars is that Mercedes has stopped making some spares so if you lose a key you are in a world of pain. However that is a small price to pay for owning one of the best cars on the road, but look out for rust on the front wings. The panoramic roof is a must to compete the package in Winter - it weighs a ton and takes 2 to get it off and you need room to store it. Great car that should last forever if you respect it!

I had a R129 2000 triple black that was my favorite car of all time! Mine had 84,000 when I bought it. The M113 motor was so powerful (Rated at 302hp from the factory) I beat a ‘95 Camaro with an LT4 in it! (Kid didn’t know what he was doing and I beat him off the line and he couldn’t catch me) it was smooth 5 speed automatic, 16-21 mpg, SO reliable, hands down my favorite car I have EVER owned! In 2015, had my beautiful Black SL500 for 2 1/2 years and was living in rural Tennessee. Friday night, 12/11/2015, on my way home from work, rural two lane road with a popular fish place right e Tennessee river, a car made a left hand turn into the parking lot in front of me, a pickup truck made a left hand turn in front of me. Car stopped. Pickup truck stopped. In my lane. I tried to swerve to the left and struck the truck behind the passenger rear wheel. Spun him out of the way, down into the right hand ditch, hit bedrock and went airborne. Troopers accident report said I was airborne about 30 feet the car landed front first and slide sideways down the ditch to a halt about 3 feet from a 10 feet deep drainage ditch. I was life flighted to Nashville with a broken back. L3 vertebrae was a “Bursting Fracture”. 6 months to recover (I’ll use a cane the rest of my life) and lost My favorite car I’ve ever had!

I’ve had the S430 and put 180,000 miles on it with zero problems other than a suspension arm bushing squeak. I love the S430 was a 2003 model and if you drove gently you can get 30 miles per gallon on road trips. I bought the car brand new and Kemp mobile one synthetic oil in it the whole time and I asked the guy how tight is my engine pointer had about 140,000 miles on it. He said that the engine was like brand new. This was the guy at the smog testing place so you know the rings or in perfect shape.

Next generation's [R230] Twin Turbo V12 had 24 [twenty four] NGK spark plugs. The extra spark plug was why it only had 3 valves per cylinder ran by a single camshaft for each head. That was the secret to it's diesel like torque.

Gopro - Good color saturation but huge halos by light sources. the lens is perhaps a little too wide angle for area shots.
Maybe try a mid-quality DSLR with a good zoom lens. You can get them at pawn shops now a days and this class of camera has way higher quality lenses and produces excellent results.
The S class owner obviously takes great care.

Lovely car, thanks for showing us around! Enjoy the videos tremendously.
Shame about the tires - 2010 is too old. Put it on some new rubber so it can be enjoyed to full potential.
With regards to the camera; I think the perspective is too wide angle (lots of 'fish-bowly' distortion. Vibrant colours do pop though.

@@bumfluffmcregor3730 nah, 4 tires will not cost a fortune. Plus, it is nicer to drive. More grip makes better acceleration, turning and braking. On top of that the supple rubber should make it more comfortable as well. Final argument is that it is much safer (old tires are really unsafe). If you want a non-appliance/non daily car you've got to accept you will more likely age out tires than wear out tires. But that is the price you pay. And it is a good argument to drive&enjoy it as much as you can.

Wizard, I enjoyed you Vinwiki epidode. I.am very glad for your quietly spoken example.
Mrs Wizard, I appreciate being included in the tryout of the new camera system. I hope you have the time to really evaluate its advantages further. And there are one or two things that are startlingly good.
But, maybe this would be an example of something an experienced camera operator once told me: To be able to ask a manufacturer or distributor to borrow it for the weekend. Then take it back.
And, Mrs Wizard, I think you did a very good job on the video.

The R129 are without doubt a fantastic car. I have a 2001 R129 SL500 owned for 5 years. Not a garage queen , lives on my driveway l have done 40k miles in it. I generally drive about 7000 miles per annum.
    Extremely comfortable GT cruiser.

New Go pro, nice quality, but it seems very fisheye which makes things like the engine distorted. Plus color seems intense.

    • @docontra4921
      @docontra4921 2 года назад

Yup! Both can be corrected with image settings in the GoPro (although color settings are likely to be fiddly). In my case at least, Color looks oversaturated (but I like that look 😊). As for the fisheye, it's not a big deal on fixed shots, but it is distracting/disorienting during panning (esp. in the engine shots when the camera angled upwards)

I think the 32V M119 that preceded this engine in the pre '98 500SL has only 8 plugs total. There are some interesting R129 forums where the M119 vs. M113 comparisons get hashed out between people. Very entertaining for a gear head to glance over lol

The GoPro gives so much lens flare you could think J.J. Abrams was directing your video rather than Mrs. Wizard. :)
I think if you're looking for low mileage luxury cars like this probably the best place would be an estate sale. A lot of the time, older people figure "Well I'll probably buy one last new car, may as well make it something nice, something I always wanted" and so they get something like a Mercedes-Benz or a big Lexus or something, and then they just don't drive it very much. They're also commonly retired to somewhere with a warm-weather climate where salt doesn't eat it.

The pink truck turned RED with the new camera! That's awesome. I see some reflection from the lights, which could be a lens not cleaned with the proper cloth. The brightness does not auto adjust, which would be nice, so it could light up the dark areas and show color on the bright ones. Not sure if it has the option of 2K at 60 fps or 4K at 60 fps, but I think 2K is fine, 4K would last a long time as that is the current standard. The colors are beautiful, I think the focus could be enhanced, not sure if that's the camera's fault or the editing software's limit. Consider consulting other RUclips friends, they would know a lot more.
I saw the VinWiki video before this and wow, great video. This really makes me want to visit, if only I had lived in the USA. I started following when you bought the Ferrari from Car Trek. This is such awesome content. Watch Doug DeMuro for highlights of what's in a new car. Watch you for common problems and how to address them, and watch ChrisFix to see how one can fix common problems (and even complicated ones) at home. Great addition to other channels I watch. Keep it up!

I think that the new camera looked very good. I didn’t notice the “fisheye” effect that some have mentioned, maybe I am just used to seeing it, and don’t notice it anymore, but that can be corrected easily. GoPros do need a lot of light, but you probably know that. I don’t know if you changed how you are recording audio, your wireless always sounds good, but sometimes Mrs. Wizard’s audio is a little “muddy”. Mrs. Wizard’s audio was very clean, in this video.

Old tires are no joke. Case in point; Paul Walker. The Porsche that he was in that crashed was determined that it had old tires that just didn’t have many miles on them. (Obviously speed was a factor too, but if the car had good tires it’s possible that it wouldn’t have crashed)

The R129 are fairly easy to find Wizard - even lower mileage examples…at a cost but not outrageous….at least, not yet.. A good R129 can be found, for a decent price - they are a much better value at the moment than the previous R107 generation. I have the same car as you went thru - in black. It’s a wonderful car that I wouldn’t sell (unless I found a special edition version). Yes, parts are (or can be) expensive, or at times very difficult to find. Many of the interior trim pieces (sun visors, etc) have not aged well….and many suffer from a “gap” in the headrest / seatbelt area due to the plastic snap piece breaking inside. Any headaches the cars present are made up for it when you get behind the wheel. Thank you for reviewing this one.
