DIY Dog Carpet Mill

  • So my Dad and I built this doggie carpet mill/treadmill for Jakin... works great to get him his exercise. Used lots of scrap wood, some 1/2 inch lag bolts to go in the bearings and into the timber. Used fishing line to sew the carpet. This video can be used to help desensitize an animal to a big dog especially a cat that likes playing with a toy on a string.

      @@choosehealth4u where is that detailed update video?? I only see a short 20 second video of a new treadmill. Yours is by far the best I've seen, I really hope you still use your channel and see this comment, I absolutely love this and really want to make a cheap one for my puppy. He's 7 months and already over 60 pounds and growing so fast, and is so hyperactive, he's becoming anxious because no matter how often we go exercising he's still got so much energy to spare, but we can't have another dog right now to help him take his energy out with. I want to make him a treadmill asap but I'm not handy, so I need detailed instructions and I'm really hoping you can help me or someone will see this

      @@Night-ud4ew there was another comment where I gave a better detail explanation when someone else asked so scrolling through the comments on this video you may find that and hopefully it helps. One thing I will say is that the treadmill is very helpful for tiring dogs out... but also keep in mind that mental games are just as effective if not more so. Playing the "go find it" game... making them search for their food around the house after holding a "stay" or "place" ... or even just driving around with the windows open or taking them places they can smell new smells will tire them out just as much. I know it sounds odd but it can be very helpful. Have a great day and sorry for the delay in response. :)

      @@choosehealth4u I saw several more detailed comments for the materials but didn't find anything on detailed instructions but thanks anyway. I actually can't figure out how to teach my dog to play the search for your food game but I've tried a few other mental stimulations. Trying to keep his excitement pretty low tbh as he has a tendency to be pretty much constantly overexcited/over threshold. The farthest we've gotten is him giving up on enrichment because he lost interest/got bored. I just scatter his food around the living room or put it in his tire tug pretty much because that's actually gotten me interest so far. I saw a thing recently of arousal vs drive, so if that makes sense to you - my puppy is probably high to extremely high arousal, medium-low drive.

      Regular carpet scrap sewed together with fishing line.
      Plywood and 2x4s for frame and some old fence boards for the side
      Contact paper on the plywood to make it smooth for the carpet
      Go kart bearings with lag bolt to go through into the timber inside a piece of abs pipe

    this is awesome i'm in the middle of getting the parts to build my own like this .My pitbull is 2 now and has so much energy i run 5kms and it's still not enough so this will help a lot

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  3 года назад

      I hope you and your pitbull enjoy the new doggy treadmill! I have found using the "go find it" game hiding his toys and encouraging him to do scent work is a good way to tire him out. Sometimes mental stimulation can exhaust them just as much if not more then physical exertion.

    Awsome tread Mill, but would like to suggest that angle of slope should not be greater than 15degrees

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  2 года назад +3

      do you also make sure not to go for a walk, run or a hike anywhere the ground may have greater then 15 degree incline? for this application the incline needs to be enough that it makes it easier for them to run since the ability to slide the carpet on the surface below it would be hindered or harder if the incline is not enough. this alone would make it harder to get a dog started when they first start running. Do you have a source of information to support your 15 degree incline limitation and reasoning and is it a blanket statement irregardless of age, breed, size, whether in tact etc? Before growth plates are closed they really shouldnt be running at all let alone next to a bike, on a treadmill or on an incline except short bursts normal for puppy play not prolonged runs.

    How long do you have to have him run on that per session? And how many times a day?

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  6 лет назад +1

      I usually run him every other day or so... usually about 10 to 20 minutes and he is pretty darn tired. I have a helper that walks him too and I use toys with games like fetch as well as one of my other videos chasing the hose. He also runs with the bike.

    How do u get it to rotaite so smooth

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  3 года назад

      car wax on the smooth surface between the carpet and the contact paper I put on top of the wood platform. Also the carpet itself needs to not be too tight... it must be lose some or it won't spin right either.

    What angle did you put the mill on?

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  3 года назад +1

      About 20 degrees. You can always add more 2x4s under the front to lift it higher up. Too steep will be too hard for the dog and not enough incline makes it actually harder for the dog to move the carpet track.

  • @tessatrusner5570
    @tessatrusner5570 5 лет назад

    How did you make it?

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  4 года назад

      Basic frame base with plywood and 2x4s... put contac paper that was slick on top of plywood to make carpet slide easier though you could use plexiglass or whiteboard type wood, rollers made from abs pipe with timber put into it (screw abs to timber), drill holes through frame into timber to make the rollers and use big bolts. Either get go kart bearings or use piece of empty pipe for the lag bolts to go through. Sew carpet together to make the track (dont make it too tight) and then add duct tape for better traction on the back of the carpet (part dogs feet run on). Then add the sides. I found pounding a stake in the ground and screwing it to the base legs help keep it real secure. I recommend using pressure treated wood for whatever part will be touching outside ground. I later added a roof with corrugated metal to help stop rain from breaking it down faster. Paint also helps with weathering.

    • @choosehealth4u
      @choosehealth4u  5 лет назад +1

      It is an abs pipe... the black pipe at home depot with timber/wood inside... then put screws through the pipe into the wood to hold it in place. Predrilled holes in center so the lag bolts go through the bearings and into the wood
