After Roger's people put them together first part of the song was written by Rogers and Richue did the rest of the song while using the restroom... theres a video I just watched on RUclips a few days ago with Rogers explaining all this on stage as Richie is in the audience and ultimately they both perform the song afterwards
Mathew Callies - Lionell Richie wrote this song for the Commodores, and they didn't want to record it. So Richie contacted Kenny Rogers and the rest is history.
Now I’m crying. Thank you for this. My parents would put this cassette in all the time we were in the station wagon growing up. My sisters & I bought them tickets to see him in Trenton at War Memorial Theatre years ago. My father passed 4 years ago just 4 months shy of they’re 50th wedding anniversary. Tears but so many wonderful memories listening to this man. Love you guys!!!
I grew up just outside NE Philly in Bucks Co. What a big venue to have your graduation!! I was in charge of buying the tix and waited until the last minute. I went there and the box office just released a few first row center seats. LOL. Jackpot. Kenny called on my dad to answer some “true fan” trivia questions about his songs. My parents were over the moon! Keep up the great reactions. I really enjoy watching you both and your relationship with each other. ❤️
Five years I was the keyboard We toured for five years together and add the honor of playing keyboard for him since back in 1980 of the greatest performance in the world and add honor to play for him and listen to him every night for 200 days of the year we were on the road playing this song now he's passed away God blessed so and I know is in heaven singing for God
This was the song that was used in my wedding as the first dance. I still cry when I hear it. Unfortunately the marriage didn't last but I sure remember how I felt when we danced to that song.
Is there any better couple in America than the Sippingtons, no theres not. Love yall. Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers were the best of friends. Perhaps the best bros that have ever lived. Watch the videos of them performing together, especially the last one! We could all learn alot from those two! And we can all learn alot from the Sippingtons, as well. Cheers you two!

I wish someone still made great songs like this and that there were still really talented singers to perform them. Kenny Rodgers sang some of my favorite love songs
Kenny was almost cast opposite Dolly Parton in the musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd but due to scheduling conflicts the role went to Burt Reynolds. Dolly and Kenny have that famous duet Islands In The Stream.
We lost a truly good human being when Kenny passed. He’s making the other side happy with his positive and great attitude. See you on the other side Kenny! RIP good sir!

THEY WERE SUPERB THEN, BUT LOOKING BACK, WITH THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT WE HAVE NOW, I REALIZE THAT THESE CLASSIC LOVE SONGS WERE MORE THAN SUPERB, THEY ARE TIMELESS TREASURES.
Thank you for this. Every time I hear Kenny it chokes me up. Reminds me of my late stepdad listening to him back in the day. Check out these Kenny songs..Coward of the County and The Gambler.
I was 9 in 1980 and I listened to him all the time. Listening to these songs with his recent passing brings tears to my eyes. Such an honest and powerful singer. He tells a story with conviction. His vocal skills are the icing on the cake. RIP Kenny. You moved a lot of people sir. Thank you for this respectful and classy remembrance of him.

“Lose their underwear?” More like their underwear getting really damp for unexplained reasons, then suddenly “disappearing.”😜
@ Matthew
Trust me, did it for me !!
Lionel Richie is a excellent song writer and this song just goes beautifully with Kenny's voice.
Kenny and Lionel sang this together on a show and their love and friendship is very evident!
Yes, and the video of that performance is here on YT.
Lionel Richie called Kenny Rogers his angel. They shared a beautiful friendship
