Lionel Richie wrote this song specifically for Kenny Rogers. Richie's songwriting partnered with Kenny Rogers' voice was almost guaranteed to make women lose their underwear. RIP Kenny Rogers

Richie had the music written and presented it to the Commodores with opening the song with "lady" and only that word... he didn't have anything else as for lyrics to the music for this song. After Roger's people put them together first part of the song was written by Rogers and Richue did the rest of the song while using the restroom... theres a video I just watched on RUclips a few days ago with Rogers explaining all this on stage as Richie is in the audience and ultimately they both perform the song afterwards

Mathew Callies - Lionell Richie wrote this song for the Commodores, and they didn't want to record it. So Richie contacted Kenny Rogers and the rest is history.

“Lose their underwear?” More like their underwear getting really damp for unexplained reasons, then suddenly “disappearing.”😜

Now I’m crying. Thank you for this. My parents would put this cassette in all the time we were in the station wagon growing up. My sisters & I bought them tickets to see him in Trenton at War Memorial Theatre years ago. My father passed 4 years ago just 4 months shy of they’re 50th wedding anniversary. Tears but so many wonderful memories listening to this man. Love you guys!!!

I grew up just outside NE Philly in Bucks Co. What a big venue to have your graduation!! I was in charge of buying the tix and waited until the last minute. I went there and the box office just released a few first row center seats. LOL. Jackpot. Kenny called on my dad to answer some “true fan” trivia questions about his songs. My parents were over the moon! Keep up the great reactions. I really enjoy watching you both and your relationship with each other. ❤️

YOU EITHER LISTEN TO THEM ON THE RADIO, WATCH THEM ON TV, BUY THEIR VYNIL RECORDS WHICH WERE SELLING BY THE MILLIONS THROUGHOUT THE WORLD OR GO TO THEIR CONCERTS. THEY WERE SUPERB THEN, BUT LOOKING BACK, WITH THE KIND OF MUSIC THAT WE HAVE NOW, I REALIZE THAT THESE CLASSIC LOVE SONGS WERE MORE THAN SUPERB, THEY ARE TIMELESS TREASURES.

I was 10 when this song came out, which is the age when you're able to kind of start understanding adult songs. My parents listened to country music and we had a radio in the kitchen that was always on. There were years during the '80s where you couldn't go an hour without hearing a Kenny Rogers song. I also grew up in Houston (like him), so the radio stations showed him extra love.
Even during the height of a success, he was known for being approachable, down to earth, and always grateful for his fans and for his success. RIP, sir.
(It was also a weird flashback to remember a time when the name "Lionel Richie" required some elaboration to some people.)

Steph...According to Kenny in an interview in 2018, "Lady" was written by Lionel Richie for the Commodores but they didn't like it & turned it down. That's when Lionel offered it to Kenny. All he had written was the first verse & when Kenny asked him for the rest of it, Lionel went to the bathroom to write the rest of it. He came out with the completed song. The Commodores never sang the song & Lionel only sang it a few times on stage WITH Kenny.

Correction, all Lionel had written was one word "Lady". If you go back and look at the video of the tribute show for Lionel Kenny sang lady and told the story. ❤️

@@jamesakers2959 I saw an interview Lionel did with Bobby Bones the other day and he told that the original name of the song was actually "Baby". Kenny had been going on the whole time about his new wife at the time saying that she was a real "Lady" then he turned to Lionel and asked him the name of the song and it was then and forevermore known as "Lady"❤️
