Actually Kenny approached Lionel in Las Vegas and ask him to write a song a greatest hits album. Lionel didn't want to until he found the number of expected album sales. He already had the title and music. The Commadores didn't want to do it. He wrote the first verse and Kenny finished recording it. They were waiting for the second verse, Lionel was in the bathroom and wrote the second verse. One of his biggest songs. This was told by Kenny at tribute concert for Lionel Richie.
My mom (very early 80's) would clean the house to a Commodores record. I would hear it and knew to get outside for the day lol

You should watch the live version that Kenny and Lionel performed together. Kenny told the story of how it was written and the wonderful friendship they showed will make you cry. It was only a few years before Kenny passed, so his voice was not quite as strong as in his prime, but he still had it.
