However, the amount of times this simple technique has saved my students in rolls or in competition is CRAZY! Definitely an important technique especially at lower belts and in no gi! - Coach Tom
There's a technique I teach in my dojo that takes a different approach to defending against this choke, and it'll work for that final version you showed. You should give it a try. As long as you have time to breathe, don't even worry about the choke directly(except maybe trying to dig your chin in to reduce pressure). Instead, immediately reach for one of your opponent's hooks and pull it up to you. Then whatever submission that you can apply to the leg from that position, something that is particularly painful or something that can be fully applied seemingly instantly, lock it in and give it your all. If you do this as soon as he's secured the choke, and you're able to apply the leglock right away, the pain of the leglock will cause his to instinctively release some of the choke or could result in him having to completely abandon the choke. The lock I apply depends on my opponent's hooks and how deep they are. I have two go-tos if the other guy has his hooks around where your partner had in this video. For the first one, you basically grab his ankle and treat it like an arm, then think catch wrestling style of the standing kimura. Basically, one hand will grab the roof of the foot and the other hand will slip underneath to grab your own wrist, then the hand on the foot will pull the foot down(think, you're pretty much applying an Achilles lock with your hands). If you're looking to create a lot more pain, so you KNOW he'll give up the choke, then this is what you'll do. First, you'll lift the ankle so you have more control. Then, you'll pull the other guy's leg deeper into the position(the idea is you want just enough of his leg out to be able to reach it with your leg). Once his leg is far enough out, pick a spot on the back of that leg that you feel will be the most sensitive to pain, that's where you want your forearm. Get the same side arm underneath the leg with your forearm placed where you feel it'll get the best result(if you don't know where would be the most painful or you're getting close to fading, immediately get the arm beneath the leg and grip your gi just above or right at the knee [which should have your forearm underneath the leg's Achilles tendon] and be sure to keep control over the leg you're attacking) At this point, your forearm should rest just slightly above the ankle. Your other hand is then going to rotate the leg enough that their leg should resemble what it would look like in an Achilles Lock. Then comes the big finish, pull your own leg(same side) up and on top of the foot and immediately throw your other leg up over your own foot(leg triangle positioning) and finally drive your leg down with all you have, basically folding the ankle over your arm. The second version can take a bit to do if you haven't done it often, so it's more of a defensive submission you would usually use when you're defending on back mount in general. I use the second version the most, but I have a lot of experience with it, especially given I had partner that was crazy good at getting into back mount, so I got really good at playing offense and defense at the same time anytime someone took my back. Anyway, the locks work. I mean it. Try it out. If you put your opponent into something really painful, even if he doesn't tap, the pressure of the choke will get significantly weaker and escapes become an option.
I told my friend I could escape this choke and he didn't believe me so I let him lock it in a tired this and it worked I got out and got into mount but honestly everyone who was watching thought I was litreally gonna pass .... out my face was going purple literally mil a seconds in the difference ...
The Grappling Academy is it a good idea to when you take the choking arm down to get a over hook on the arm and remove the other arm from your neck because we were on the ground and when I removed the first arm I was still kinda getting squeezed with the one arm cause I was like turned in if you get me ?
@@TheGrapplingAcademy yes I can still get choked with one arm if the other guy is strong because I have a long skinny neck. You kind of just dismissed it as "you don't have to worry about it" but do you have any tips on it?
In the chaos of the actual fight the "choker" would be able to easily reset the position if you didn't get a firm grip of their hand. That said the best defence of an RNC is to make sure you don't get caught in it.
Hi! New guy here! Thanks for the video. Two days ago, my son (9) lost in a tournament due to a Rear Naked Choke. He didn’t tapped but the ref stopped it (maybe because they are kids?). Anyway, thanks for the tips here. I show this video to him. I did a small vlog about the tournament that I’ll upload most likely tomorrow in case anyone reading this would like to give us some feedback. Thanks 🤙🏻
I don't need the hand on the back to complete the choke. Judo style is just to grasp hands and pull in. I've never seen anyone escape by simply pulling at that configuration
Watch mma fight between frank shamrock and phil baroni. And countless other matches. The hand to hanbd choke is a good option although weaker structurally. I love both (-: Tom Davey
@@TheGrapplingAcademy You mean this fight? ruclips.net/video/IcDpHHJDIxM/видео.html Yes, he manages to pull the hand off and then goes back to the configuration I mentioned. Although, judo style would be more to use the forearm in a choke, rather than form a triangle around the sides in a strangle. Both work, of course! But, doesn't this make my point? When he goes for the behind the head configuration, his hand can be pulled away. When he clasps hands the guy is out in, what, three or four seconds, and the referee has to step in (and good work by the ref there).
Hmm very difficult to pull this escape out against blue and above belts even good white belts will put you to sleep.ones he put his head close to your head it is pretty much over I believe ones he got the first arm around your neck you should go 2 on 1 either the choking or to the free arm , But heyhow i am just grasshopper! always learning will try it ! Osss Thanks coach Tom for good and educational videos !
Thanks Ty! Yes you must grab that hand quick before your oxygen runs out! The real key is to control the arm before it reaches your head so he cannot lock it in with his chin! Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom
Would be really nice to see it done with your partner using full strength. Some times just seeing it makes it look way to easier vs the realty of some one really choking you.
interesting idea, but i got 2 questions: 1. how do we know this truly works if you didn't demonstrate with full strength in the video? you just went through the motion, but it might not work if your attacker is actively trying to struggle against your hands 2. what if you're a woman who's pull up power isn't that stronger? what if they can't pull the man's hand down? Does that mean this tutorial only applies to men under attack? (nothing wrong if so since there are tutorials only targeting women as well so it's fair)
Well I see only 2 options here and that is if youre whether quick enough ot have a massive neck. The one is if the situation is not a sparring match the you try to pocke his eye with your thumb, second is to try to lock his leg and break it.
If someone that knows how to do it sinks it in you have 5-10 second tops. You can reach for their eye but they can put the face against you too. If you reach down for a leg you're going out even faster. The best defense is to not get caught in a RNC. You pass out because the blood to your brain gets cut off, not because you cant breathe.
That is correct and you can also use your chin to prevent this escape but 99% of people don't protect against it during the early stages of the choke. Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom
@@TheGrapplingAcademy not in my gym. Fortunately I guess. From white belts our instructor teaches us how not to get that locking arm caught on its way to its destination
I'd say this would definitively work on a lot of people. The only issue I come across is the higher you go on the skill level you will have guys put their chin over their own hand (the one behind the neck) and close the gap with their head while leaving no space for my hands to even touch his arms. By that point I see no legitimate escape. If I am fast enough to catch that arm before they cinch it in behind my head then I'm usually good. Sometimes guys can put on a one handed choke pretty damn good though.
Yes simply turn towards the gable as you do a chin up on their arm. The key in all choke escapes is prevention and acting quickly if caught! (-: Coach Tom Davey
I was actually looking for something different where you don't reach back and grab the arm, since it never seems to work again a strong resisting opponent.
It wouldn't. This would be only at the first sign of the initial choke position. Once the hand is deep behind the head and the choker's head is pressed firmly against the back of your head. You are pretty much done.
@@DrReginaldFinleySr I found another technique that works like magic! If the opponent has his legs wrapped around you, you can put your leg over his feet and press down (it becomes sort of an ankle lock). Done it in sparring a lot and it works! That is of course IF your opponent has his legs around you.
@@ricksterdrummer2170 Yeah dude that only works if they cross their legs. A seasoned practitioner will never do those rookie mistakes and let's not forget there are soo many variations of the rear naked choke. Best to avoid giving back at any cost. @@soumyabratachakraborty3544 I actually figured something else out in the mean time just from experimenting! I’d grab the foot (let’s say right leg) of my opponent and fall to my right side and press my right elbow down on my opponents knee while I pull the foot towards my head. They tap immediately! It becomes some sort of weird kneelock.
Awesome stuff. Just one question, I am a short person and have short limbs esp when partnering with bigger people, I seem to have trouble reaching my arms or legs across or over their body to do certain locks or so, what kind of moves would you recommend the most for my case? Should I go more for armbars or chokes and which guards?
You will have solid chokes, kimuras, guillotines, etc but your triangles and armbars will also come on as years provide the wisdom of what attacks and guards suit your body and style the best. (-: Tom Davey
It might be against the rules , but I saw a video where the guy being chocked pulled out a bic lighter, he got free right away, the other thing that's probably against the rules also is a pocket knife.. :) If an attacker is trying to choke you out, you best avoid depending on the method in this video, you can try it, but don't count on it, you have 4 seconds or less to make something happen.
Well the guy already had the lighter out, preparing for the rear naked, it was planned. In real life you aren't going to dig your lighter out during an attack.
this only works when the attacker has very loose head and arm positioning. A hand that's forced behind your head can't be scraped off like that. Henry akins and brian peterson have much better late rear naked choke defences based around turning your head.
Quick question, are there any benefits at all to doing it the first way over grabbing the delt? When I took combatives in the army we learned to do it that first way but now that I'm doing jiujitsu more regularly my current coach does it your way. Is it easier to get an angle with the first one?

This works.. However You could still be in trouble if he bites your hand when you try to take off the support hand... You have to be quick. It still works tho... Peace.
This is probably meant as an MMA tutorial, where biting is forbidden. In a 'real' fight, with no rules, you could just, say, break their fingers instead of follow through with the counter, which could win you the fight outright if the pain's too much for your opponent to handle (forbidden as small joint manipulation in MMA events) - this is roughly how Arrichion won a Pankration event in ancient Greece, though he died in the process. Of course, your opponent could opt for a blow to your throat, or, hell, an eye gouge, as Jeff Mayer brought up (even Pankration events struck that as an option), rather than a chokehold in such a situation - MMA forbids both, but there's no referee on the street. Outright fights for survival aren't really accounted for in guides like these, and they shouldn't be seen from such a perspective. It's unlikely you'd end up in a 'real' fight where your opponent would try a clean RNC like this regardless, as they could pretty easily end the fight before a technique like this becomes applicable (kick or stomp to grounded enemy's head - both forbidden in MMA), unless you like fighting with a severe concussion. A chokehold might come up, sure, but there's other practical ways to escape that - an MMA-forbidden elbow strike (hell, I'm pretty sure that'd even work for a badly-done RNC), or a foot stomp. Remember that MMA is a sport, and should not be seen as pure combat, but fighting sanitized just enough that careers can be made of it. Most of the attacks mentioned above aren't forbidden because they're unsporting, but because they can cause brain damage, or severe organ or joint injury. If someone's trying to kill you, though...
Interesting escape however the first escape is very complex especially if your opponent is very fast enough to put you in a rear naked choke or even block ur arms with their legs
The guy doing the choke would have his head flush against and over the wrists which pretty much negates your move. Prove it again but have the guy do a Proper rnc...never get out using your move.
Yeah I'm sure it works every time if you are far stronger than your opponent and the odds of him getting you there in the first place is a dream in and of itself.

Slight mcdojo ism here, but many tools are better than one. That reach back and pry is using a set of muscles that generally are the weakest on the human body. It’s going to be very difficult to pull off , espeacially against an enraged ,aggressive opponent ..a heel to opponents groin and a forward rollover when he whences after pain hits his balls I would say is better. Also you can headbutt to the side and back when timed right can also be am offense. Finger stab to eyeballs if the guys face is close to your ear may be better also
Not while his other arm is across your neck. But if he has a standard seatbelt grip and his lower arm is going under your arm, you can attack the top arm by pulling it straight and bringing it over your head

About the usefulness of a Tom and Jerry episode, THANKS!
I told my friend I could escape this choke and he didn't believe me so I let him lock it in a tired this and it worked I got out and got into mount but honestly everyone who was watching thought I was litreally gonna pass .... out my face was going purple literally mil a seconds in the difference ...
Haha that is a great story. Yes every millisecond counts when escaping chokes! (-: Coach Tom Davey
Before I start watching? Is it the double tap?
The only way to beat a grappler it's by striking the hell out of it .
The the chockers Big toe is RIGHT THERE DEFENSELESS GRAB TOE AND YANK THE PAIN WILL MAKE THE ATTACKER STOP. BREAK TOE AND END THIS NONSENSE
Another usefull tip I found is to roll it will affect your opponents position
Thanks 🤙🏻
Tried it today, glad I'm still alive though
I love the instruction.
This is great, I can’t wait to try it out on No Gi Wednesday 👊
I like that chin lock detail.
You escape everytime, until you don't. Lol
Haha yep: I didn’t name this video: it surprisingly triggers many with that title 😂
@@TheGrapplingAcademy I love it. Good video 😂
Great option, thanks
If only Poirier had seen this video
Wait guys I figured it out. He never taps from the rear-naked choke, so he's been choked out so many times his brain thinks this actually works.
Done, Victory to you
He didn’t mean that it works every time, just that you should try it every time. LOL
What if you’re standing up? This is one that I can agree with!!!
@@TheGrapplingAcademy You mean this fight?
ruclips.net/video/IcDpHHJDIxM/видео.html
Yes, he manages to pull the hand off and then goes back to the configuration I mentioned.
@@mindfuldrone This does make your point. There may need to be another technique used, to fight off the chock that way.
Hmm very difficult to pull this escape out against blue and above belts even good white belts will put you to sleep.ones he put his head close to your head it is pretty much over
I believe ones he got the first arm around your neck you should go 2 on 1 either the choking or to the free arm ,
But heyhow i am just grasshopper! always learning will try it !
Osss
Thanks coach Tom for good and educational videos !
Plus the title says ''every time'' that is so wrong, using
his method.
Because it wouldn't work in almost all real situations
@@calthekonqueror312how tf you know that, "it wouldn't work in most situations" bitch go find out lol
Best to try it for yourself while in practice. What works for/on some may not work for others.
interesting idea, but i got 2 questions:
1. how do we know this truly works if you didn't demonstrate with full strength in the video? you just went through the motion, but it might not work if your attacker is actively trying to struggle against your hands
2. what if you're a woman who's pull up power isn't that stronger? what if they can't pull the man's hand down? Does that mean this tutorial only applies to men under attack? (nothing wrong if so since there are tutorials only targeting women as well so it's fair)
This technique is stupid and won't work against anyone who knows what they are doing.
@@wayneswildworld nope
After some hours sleeling, some blackouts, i learned to tap 💪
Good video. Thays good advice
Can they bite your hands ? To stop you from breaking the choke.
when he do his hand on your neck and than push his head tight to ur head u cant reach his arm...
Rear naked choke is unbreakable. My point of view
i watched this video because there are very dangerous people out there and the method is easy to learn
I like this BRAVO!!
I can imagine accidentally stabbing your fingers into your sparring partners eyes once reaching back like this
I'd say this would definitively work on a lot of people.
Hey man is their escape from the rear naked choke with gable grip?
Yes simply turn towards the gable as you do a chin up on their arm. The key in all choke escapes is prevention and acting quickly if caught! (-: Coach Tom Davey
The Grappling Academy thanks
@@DrReginaldFinleySr Exactly.
@@ricksterdrummer2170 Yeah dude that only works if they cross their legs. A seasoned practitioner will never do those rookie mistakes and let's not forget there are soo many variations of the rear naked choke. Best to avoid giving back at any cost. Precaution is better than cure. Easier said than done though
Back when every tip was a “hack”
The best way is to stay strapped
Thank you!🌹🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️😊✅👍🏻
Would this work if this was a standing rear choke?
Like the back choke tip
Thanks Nicholas, Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom
Dustin Poirier should watch this video! 😝
Grabs hand during RNC. *transitions to fulcrum choke* ☠️
It works in a pillar attack, but can you please demonstrate this going full force and where the guy is really trying to sleep you?
Thank you.
Do it yourself with a partner. If they choke you with hand on head you always have a chance. (-: Professor Tom Davey
It might be against the rules , but
I saw a video where the guy being
chocked pulled out a bic lighter, he got
free right away, the other thing that's
probably against the rules also is a
pocket knife.. :) If an attacker is trying to
choke you out, you best avoid depending on
the method in this video, you can try it, but
don't count on it, you have 4 seconds or less
to make something happen.
Well the guy already had the lighter out, preparing for the rear naked, it was planned. In real life you aren't going to dig your lighter out during an attack.
Could long hair, if trapped under the rear naked choke, act as a lubricant to move your head?
this only works when the attacker has very loose head and arm positioning. A hand that's forced behind your head can't be scraped off like that. Henry akins and brian peterson have much better late rear naked choke defences based around turning your head.
How to get out of YOUR version of the rear choke??
My best defence is to black out before I get choked. That's why RNC will never work on me. 😂
Quick question, are there any benefits at all to doing it the first way over grabbing the delt? When I took combatives in the army we learned to do it that first way but now that I'm doing jiujitsu more regularly my current coach does it your way. Is it easier to get an angle with the first one?
Techniques evolve and change all the time. Everything taught works but we often change how we teach based on the educated responses of the grappling community. Evolution will always play a role in bjj
@@TheGrapplingAcademy Do you know Valentina Shevchenko, it's incredible how she always gets out, defends a choke/or submission and in the last time she punched her opponent in the same time. 😳 I mean how? I was in a choke before and could not get out.
There is no escape from a RNC. Period.
That's because you're bad at everything you do
I was taught to sink deep & lock my rear nacked behind my own head with chin tucked ..
Yeah I was taught the same thing. Placing the non choking hand behind your own head and keeping your head close to his head so he can’t head butt you.
If you break the grip you will not be tapped but be careful they will keep fighting to get that grip back, also if someone is trying to finish a choke that they clearly aren’t going to get, they are literally gassing themselves at such a fast rate when you get out your sitting pretty
There arms are jello when you finnaly get out..
That is genius.
Try this in the ufc and you’ll blackout before being able to pull this off
@Reuben Schmecklestein yes you’re absolutely right! But claiming this works “every single time” is complete nonsense.
Damn if only McGregor had seen this video
Yeah I'm sure it works every time if you are far stronger than your opponent and the odds of him getting you there in the first place is a dream in and of itself.
"I never double tap on rear naked choke"
Few Secs later: Defends against the most poorly executed rear naked choke.
Lesson of the video: there's no escape from rear naked chokes, the top players gives in. Even if there is the percentage is very low. Better to not give your back
🤣
Slight mcdojo ism here, but many tools are better than one. That reach back and pry is using a set of muscles that generally are the weakest on the human body. It’s going to be very difficult to pull off , espeacially against an enraged ,aggressive opponent ..a heel to opponents groin and a forward rollover when he whences after pain hits his balls I would say is better. Also you can headbutt to the side and back when timed right can also be am offense. Finger stab to eyeballs if the guys face is close to your ear may be better also
by grabbing the arm straight like that, is it possible to arm bar the opponent by pulling down on the arm over one's neck as a fulcrum?
Not while his other arm is across your neck. But if he has a standard seatbelt grip and his lower arm is going under your arm, you can attack the top arm by pulling it straight and bringing it over your head
thanks for the reply , and i understand we're talking about grappling not punching , but it would cause a release ( 2:30 ) minute part should make it easy to get the eyes or cause him to ease up.. Its all Good keep the videos coming - Where y'all located ?
Hi Ronbo, good comment. My full time academy is in Adelaide, Australia and I am about to pack my bags for another few weeks in the US. Take care. Happy rolling (-: Coach Tom

both of your arms are free what if you double punched him super hero style and knocked him into next week, its not like his head is going anywhere an easy target what do you think?

how about sliding our hand in between of opponent support or non choking hand,or slide it on opponent choking hand?i been thinking bout it,i think its a way
I got jumped so I need to learn this cuz they did this to me
Frank Trigg could’ve used this against Matt Hughes not once but twice,😂🤣
Okay so how do you defend the one where you reach to your far shoulder and lock it in with your chin
You can’t obviously the RNC has evolved!
You should always have the top of your hand on the back of the neck not the palm.It is much more painful and effective as the knuckles help!
I agree! It also make sit harder to do this counter but more than about 70% of guys choke the 'old way' still...crazy. (-: Coach Tom Davey
Okay so now how do we escape the second phase of that choke you just taught before the end??😭😭
ideally a good tech for sport or gym with the chin locking.. but not for street.. unless you value the choke over loosing your eyes to a scrambling opponent...
won't work. dirty tricks fighting has an empirically proven 100% failure rate against BJJ fighters.
I take it it's illegal to fold under the other arm ?
There is no way you are escaping it like that.
So what do we do when he reaches his far shoulder?
only when youre seated apparently
Lol if your opponent is willing to give you his hand this “technique” might truly work🤣
Lay lower leg across his ankles and arch your back and dislocate both of his hips.
Somebody show this video to Dustin Poirier 😂
Wait so there's no escape from the improved version that you showed at the end?
doesn't work, every time!
No, once its locked in you are going night night.
@@flavadave86 break his leg. don't bother about the lock.
A proper RNC, there's only one way to escape. Accept the inevitable nap and he most likely let's go when you go to sleep Boom. Escaped lol.
This looks good in theory but let's see if it works in a real life situation. His arm isn't going to be easy to move because he wants to choke you out and win.
No move is 100% but I have used this hundreds of times as have countless of my students and others around the world. It catches many guys off guard! (-: Coach Tom Davey
