  • Coaster, San Diego County's commuter railroad, acquired two F59PHI type locomotives from EMD in late 2001. These locomotives, number 3001 and 3002, assisted Coaster's five original F40PHM-2C locomotives in pulling commuters along the Pacific Ocean. In 2023, the two locomotives were replaced with Siemens Mobility SC-44 Charger units after over 20 years of service. In this video, we will see both 3001 and 3002 in their final years of operation as they pull trains along the coast.

The last of the F59PHI locomotives in service within Southern California's railroads is now. First, Amtrak retired the F59PHI's from the Pacific Surfliner service in 2018, in favor of the Siemens Charger SC-44's entering service. Amtrak F59PHI 458 was the final unit that was overhauled to Chicago IL via Amtrak's Southwest Chief train. All ex-Amtrak Surfliner F59PHI's are part of Chicago's commuter rail services Metra. Next, LA's commuter rail services Metrolink retired its F59PHI's in 2020, along with the F59PH locomotives, in favor of the EMD F125 locomotives entering Metrolink service. All retired Metrolink F59PH and F59PHI locomotives are currently sitting in the Keller storage yard in Los Angeles awaiting final disposition. Now, San Diego's commuter rail service Coaster is soon retiring its two F59PHI's, with new SC-44's joining Coaster's fleet. Coaster's original F40PHM-2C locomotives since 1995 have been retired since 2021. Two of its units 2103 and 2105 have been donated to railroad museums. I'm gonna miss the sound of the F59PHI's K5LA horns and EMD steel bells once Coaster retires them from service.

Hey Mike are you good at helping railroads preserve older locomotives to museums and tourist railroads after they are retired and withdrawn from service ? Because I’m hoping that Caltrain can preserve and sell most of their F40s to museum and tourist railroads and avoid the scrappers torch

Coaster F59PHIs are leaving the roster. The end of an era for Coaster. It's unclear what new owner will take these F59PHIs.

Why does coaster have only 2 f59phi locomotives, and now they’re retiring, maybe coaster can get MP36 locomotives.
