Watching this Mike makes me MISS the F59s on the surfline! Just my opinion, they RAN so well on the surfline over the years, and do I miss them! Nice to at least see they are doing well on Metra! Another great video man! :)
Believe me, I miss them SO MUCH as well. Growing up with them I always saw one whenever I would spot on the Surfline and I was able to catch all of the units and the cabcars!
Trust me, they will. They’re only retiring the -2’s (150-172) on the UP lines. As for the rest they’ll remain in service. 100-149 are being rebuilt and repainted.
Quite a cool video. The old Amtrak Surfliner F59PHI locomotives are doing pretty on Metra. The passenger system in the Chicago area, still uses old equipment.
@@CoasterFan2105 at the start of the video was that train in service? I’ve never seen them run double headers with one front facing and one rear facing

An interesting video about passenger transport in the USA. amazing how many locomotives of the F40 series are still in operation. The variety of locomotive types is also amazing. an excellent video. Thanks for showing and the information. Greetings from Germany
Many thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! It's impressive to think that the F40s will be 50 years old in just a few years. They're a similar age to many of the older EMD GP series locomotives still in service with the Class 1 freight railroads.
Nice catches! I can hear that those F59PHI’s still have their sweet narrow font K5LA’s don’t they! Although it’s sad to see the Metra F40’s go in replacement of the F59’s. At least a few ex Amtrak Surfliner F59’s were saved and not all just scraped. Also half way to 800k subs Mike! Keep on doing what you do best! Oh believe me, the F40PH's aren't going just yet. Probably only the older original ones that are well worn past their prime. They've served Metra very well. I'd be very surprised if Metra actually did scrap them all before receiving the SD70s.
I do miss the F59PHI’s on the Amtrak Surfliner the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner numbers own to surfliner by 73 to 87 as known by 450 to 464 but I am glad that metra taking very good care of them but I still need them

Very amazing content right there mike, I do appreciate the entertainment on RUclips. You should do another video like this for metrolink’s MP36PH-3C fleet 👍👍👍.
Metra: Has almost 50 Year old F40's (and they rebuilt most so they would go well past that) Has 40+ year old Gallery Cars (and basically all will be rebuilt, regardless of brand) Still has F40C's Bought used F59PH/PHI's that have been in service for like 20+ years Use Freight Railroad Tracks Bought SD70MACH instead of F125 and the agency is still one of the largest.
Metra 100-140 are the oldest locomotives on their roster, built between September and December 1977. If they keep the F40s on their roster through 2027, they will turn 50 years old.
Fun fact:Metra is planning to turn their diesel locomotives into battery electric locomotives and Metra is also going replace their older Budd gallery cars with Alstom's coradia multilevel train cars pretty neat
They are going to test 1 battery powered locomotive, not replace their entire fleet... and the new cars will replace the oldest coachs that haven't been rebuilt... pullmans and budds
The only disadvantage is that Metra does not have any locomotives yet that meet up to Teir 4 standards, thus causing more pollution in the Windy City than most other commuter railroads. I hope Metra also gets F125, Chargers, or MP54AC locomotives to replace the rest of the Aging fleet, aside from the F59s, which are old as well. I heard that from a news clip about Metra using Teir 0 or lower locomotives. And I also heard that they will get new Bi-Level coaches built by Alstom, the exact same company which produced the Surfliner Bi-Level Cars for the Amtrak/The State of California.
Given that so-cal has been plagued with "no-horn" zones, it's better that these trains are here. Even though there are such zones here, not as bad as in California.
Lovely video! Also when will the next onboard long distance train video come??? And what happened to the Amtrak shore video that was to come? Another q were the shots from 2019 or 2022? Tell me the year. Also legendary video!

Makes me wonder, how would the Pacific Surfliner be different if the F59PHI locomotives were still on Amtrak trains?
Metra:
Has almost 50 Year old F40's (and they rebuilt most so they would go well past that)

Still has F40C's
