8:01 I have to agree with you here Mike, I think the Phase VI and VII is possibly the best and most eye catching lash up any railroad can ever create anywhere in the world
As someone who always missed Phase III, I have to admit Amtrak really outdid themselves this time. They really put some thought and care into how this could work with their current rolling stock.
Hi Mike Armstrong this is Isaiah wiley from myrtle Beach south Carolina saying Keep up the great amtrak video making your the best ❤😊 my dad and I took the empire builder from Seattle to Chicago when we went across Canada 🇨🇦 on the Canadian train from Toronto to Vancouver and then we took amtrak cascades train from Vancouver Canada to Seattle Washington where we stayed in a Hilton hotel for the night and got on the empire builder the next day this trip was in 2015. See you on the American rails soon sincerely Isaiah wiley from myrtle Beach south Carolina.
When you get the chance, you should visit the Yakima Valley Subdivision. It hasn't been documented very much and I would love to see some trains on that line.
Your final scene is the best scene of all. Seeing one rail company using another rail company. BNSF makes a lot of money from NCTD Coaster & Amtrak for using their locomotives.
Just found this great video! Good planning, editing, and narrative. As I live in Central Maine (where we don't have as much straight track in the state as you showed here, nor speed limits and performance as high 🚅😀) it would help me visualize the geography a bit if you could maybe put in a map or line drawing. Minor thought. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks.
Thank you! This is the normal route, but the entire train detoured over one section of it, which is pretty unusual. I explain in greater depth in the intro of the video.
When I saw the word "DETOUR" in the title I thought the train was using an alternate routing through a different mountain pass (like, through Ellensburg and Yakima instead of the usual routing through Leavenworth and Everett) due to track work, not unlike the Zephyr running through Cheyenne and the Overland Route when the Rio Grande route is closed for work
Yes, this was a video I was originally planning on releasing in December, but it got pushed back because of other projects I completed. There may be one other one out there with a 2023 watermark that will randomly appear this year!
If one is going to or from Portland on a regular day, what happens to one's baggage if it's in the baggage car is on the part that doesn't go to or from Portland?
Mike would you know to say why sometimes there are 3 locomotives in the same composition!? another way two locomotives and the thirt in reverse! I don get it! See ya!
Not true. The California Zephyr still uses them exclusively and will for a while as Denver Station refuses to supply DEF tanks for the charger locomotives (why I’m not sure) so until something changes, only P42’s run the Zephyr route…
8:01 I have to agree with you here Mike, I think the Phase VI and VII is possibly the best and most eye catching lash up any railroad can ever create anywhere in the world
It's a nice combo!
Yes! It looks nearly completely spotless
I also dig the phase 6/7 lash-up hard
As someone who always missed Phase III, I have to admit Amtrak really outdid themselves this time. They really put some thought and care into how this could work with their current rolling stock.
Mike, I seen the Siemens Charger Four times and known as SC44/ALC-42.
Great Amtrak Empire Builder Detour video for 53 years!!!! ALL ABOARD!!!!!!
Many thanks! More on the Empire Builder soon!
@@CoasterFan2105 You're welcome!
Wow, if you were planning on leaving Seattle anyway thats really fortunate! You get a sightseer car through Steven’s Pass!
Indeed! Some lucky passengers on that train!

Awesome Alc-42s and Amtrak trains

Your shots are incredible! You combine the technical details with highly aesthetic scenery. Super fun to watch!
Great video, I had no idea that this was happening! And it made for a great video idea
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Love it! I am fired up to take the Empire Builder from PDX to CHI with my kiddo next month. Thanks for the video.
Nice compilation of the Amtrak Empire Builder trains 👍
Awesome shots and coverage of the Empire Builder and breathtaking scenery as well ! You never disappoint Mike : )

Thanks for posting this.
I have fond memories of driving inland along the Columbia, before heading south to Bend.,
the scenery on the Empire builder is beautiful! hope to ride it some day
Amazing video!! Cool to see these new ALC-42’s take action, but I will certainly miss the P40’s and P42’s.
hi mike, great video from Amtrak Empire Builder. Thanks for showing it and best regards from Germany
Your final scene is the best scene of all. Seeing one rail company using another rail company. BNSF makes a lot of money from NCTD Coaster & Amtrak for using their locomotives.
Now *that's* a proper length for a long-distance train! They should all be this long, if not longer.
Love and love this train Amtrak ❤
I never knew the Empire Builder splits over the course of its journey. That explains a lot.
Great video Keep up the good work
That was excellent, thankyou.
Awesome video and enjoyed watching once again. Have a wonderful upcoming weekend.(Steve)
Many thanks, Steve! You too.
Your welcome and thank you.@@CoasterFan2105
Oh man, if I'd known this was happening, I'd have hopped on and gone to Seattle and back for the day. I'm bummed I missed it!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks Mike.
Thanks mike
I’m never seeing Amtrak detouring in my life I do know that 48 and 49 they had to re-round because the floods
Great video
🚉🚉 Nice work Mr. Armstrong, The Amtrak Empire Builder detour was a great success, 👍🏻👍🏻 So, What routes is on these locations? ❓❓
Thank you! This is the normal route, but the entire train detoured over one section of it, which is pretty unusual. I explain in greater depth in the intro of the video.
@@CoasterFan2105 oh I get it, and no problem 😉 😉❤️❤️
That’s pretty rare to see the full Amtrak Empire Builder go through the Cascades
Nice.
Thanks!
I like the ALC-42

Why do the Phase 7 & Phase 6 livery pair up so well together?
I wonder why ATK didn't just run to Portland on the UP via Kalan Bridge in Kennewick-Hinkle-PDX
🌺🌺🇮🇳🌺🌺
Nice Video!
Thank you!
Hey Mike do you plan on visiting the grapevine vintage railroad?
Has the Empire Builder always split in two at Spokane? Also, could you please report on the track issue in San Clemente?
Hi Mike, why your watermark is still 2023? :)
Yes, this was a video I was originally planning on releasing in December, but it got pushed back because of other projects I completed. There may be one other one out there with a 2023 watermark that will randomly appear this year!
i like Trains

These trains are nice it would be better is to add Amtrak dash 8 locomotives
2nd comment
can those freight locomotives run at passenger train speeds ?
What happened to the Portland-bound passengers during the closure?
Not to mention those passengers for missed stops in the Columbia Valley.
What type of camera do you use
I'm assuming Amtrak didn't want to continue it down south to Portland??
It would have made sense on the second day of the detour, as I assume the equipment would be needed in Portland that afternoon.
The lake shore limited does the same thing
Indeed! As does the Sunset Limited.
@@CoasterFan2105 I've been on the Portland section of the empire builder

What happened to the P-42s?
they are still in service, but slowly being replaced by these new locomotives
They're pretty much done with those.
