Amtrak Dash-8 Locomotives on the Coast Starlight

- Amtrak's Dash-8 locomotives, model number P38-8BWH, were built in 1991 to fill in a gap in motive power for the company prior to the production of the GE Genesis series. For their first decade of service with Amtrak, the Dash-8s were regularly seen pulling revenue trains across the Western United States. Into the early 2000s, their appearance on passenger trains decreased significantly, as many of the locomotives were relegated to work trains and yard switching. In this video, we will take a look at Amtrak Dash-8s in service on the Coast Starlight over the last several years. First, we will see locomotive 507 in California and Washington leading the Coast Starlight in the fall of 2018. We will then see locomotive 510 on two different occasions in 2020 and 2022.

I remember riding the coast starlight between the Bay Area and LA a few times, and one of the last times, (until recently), was with one of the dash 8s behind a genesis. I remember seeing them skirt around the horseshoe turn coming into SLO at least twice or that one time I remember. Last time, it was indeed primarily the genesis engines.
I love this video simply because the Dash 8s are very unique for Amtrak and that I even have an HO scale model

I saw 509 on the back of a pacific surfliner train in San luis obispo earlier this month. Glad they are still being used somewhat.

Can't forget where AMTK 501 and 502 were eventually transferred to Amtrak California renumbered CDTX 2051 and 2052. They did run on revenue passenger trains but now they are just shunter engines in the Oakland yard.
I remember one day when I was little, I saw a Dash 8 trailing #14 in SLO. I haven’t seen one since but I’m hoping to see one on the Pacific Surfliner one day with this whole equipment shortage.

I loved Dash also, they used to run on Pennsylvania line when they doesn’t have enough P42
There was a period when they were running on the Pennsylvanian quite regularly about 10 years ago.

These days surfliner had been having a meltdown so 503 509 & 510 were used on trains
Plus i saw 510 as well on the Coast Starlight in 2022
It's always neat to see them pulling passenger trains!
For a while the Dash-8s were regulars on the Hiawatha between Chicago and Milwaukee. But I haven't seen one in revenue in an age.
I saw one on the Hiawatha back in August. Sometimes, they still appear on the Borealis.
Dash 8s are the best things Amtrak could have!

Always nice seeing a dash 8 leading an Amtrak train especially now cause they are rare to see lead nowadays. I rode the Coast Starlight 2 weeks ago and I rode behind Amtrak Life Saver unit 203, it was such a fun experience. Also awesome video. ❤️👍😎

These dash 8's aren't common here on Illinois. I never seen a dash 8 in Illinois. And one thing I know, is that there placed all over Florida! They are super common in Florida! And on the Auto Train Dash 8 511 was leading the train! They are so awesome to see!

Amtrak dash 8 is best locomotive in my opinion
They haven't been up on the starlight since 2022 unfortunately. They do run the surfliner on occasion but with the ALCs I think their starlight running era is over.
Man I’m so glad that these locomotives are still running in this year! I have a friend who caught one dash 8 with 161 on Texas Eagle 21 2 years ago. Are they still gonna be running these locos in the future or are there any retirement plans coming for them.
It sounds like they will continue to run for the time being. We'll just have to see what happens!

Epic videoing of these Amtrak P32-8BWH Locomotives, they did a fantastic life of service over for Amtrak. I love them as being one of my favorite GE Dash 8’s. They were one of these diesel locomotives that replaced the old EMD F40PH Locomotives along with the Genesis Locomotives. They had some wonderful looking paint schemes like their first kind being the Pepsi Can Livery. Also I have a question, what’s your opinion on the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad (A.K.A The Sugar Cane Train) in Lahaina and Kaanapali, Maui, Hawaii? Even though you probably never been there before.

@@CoasterFan2105 I know that one of my Uncles and one of my Aunts had visited the Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad (A.K.A The Sugar Cane Train) back sometime 12 years ago in 2012, which occurred two years before the railroad closed down by 2014. And even videoed the trip there on a train that was hauled by Lahaina, Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad No. 3 “Myrtle” (Built by the H.K. Porter Company in February 1943). As of now, the railroad is sitting abandoned with a unclear future ever since the 2023 Lahaina Wildfire.
I still can't believe i caught one leading the Texas Eagle on Christmas day back in 2022

I film in the Midwest about once every other year. The last few years, it's been more frequent than that. I just got back from a big trip to the midwest over the summer.

As a person who had a Dash 8 lead the Hiawatha before on our ride to Milwaukee, the Dash 8s have not lead any Coast Starlight trains once in a while. How many do you think we need Dash 8s to lead the Coast Starlight again?
Of course, we should have more trains in this country and especially more efficient trains on East Coast.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen them run except at yard in Chicago. I think I actually preferred that I will fit better than p42 with last to be based to of freight engine and for p42 I only liked design except been too expensive to repair .
