(4K) San Diego County Railfanning in Spring of 2019

I know im late commenting here but whats the story with that 3rd piece of track at the Sorrento Valley crossing? Based on an old vhs i have from the early 90s i have, that abandoned piece of track has been there since, cut off from the mainline. Was it ever even connected to the mainline?

The rose spot is Rose Canyon. It's near Genesee Avenue in University City.

that blue and yellow engine use to be with bnsf but not anymore now its the portland and western engine
