"A genre for himself" wraps it up perfectly. This dude is a kinetic genious and visually one of the most talented directors of all time. Great someone finally got it right and appreciated his work.

"The rock", "The island" & the first "Transformers" movie are in my mind absolutely great movies meanwhile the others are maybe cheesy, dated or forced but they are always fun, entertaining or guilty pleasures like Bad boys 2 & Armageddon

Yeah, I mean there was a market for what he is best at in the Movie business (Popcorn Action movies) and he met that demand which I guess you can’t fault him for that.
I can recall walking out of the theater with my friends when Transformers first came out back when I was in college and there were a couple of guys in their mid to late 40's walking out in front of us and one of them said to his buddy, " I'm telling you, Bay is BACK!". 🤣 Idk why that was funny to hear, but it was.
He does feel like the kind of alpha-chad broski guy that would get admiration like that. I remember reading an article about him and he like, lives the stereotypical Hollywood 'cars and chicks' lifestyle and makes zero apology for it.
Micheal Bay gave us one of the best Nic Cage action films which is "The Rock" and I salute him for making Transformers 1 and 2 lived-action. The 1st time I watched the 1st Transformers film it gave me goosebumps because it was an EPIC! theater experience.
I love him and all his films. Yeah some are just popcorn films but sometimes thats what you look for in films, to escape reality and enter into a fantasy world.
The Rock, Pain and Gain, Bad Boys 2, and Ambulance are absolute masterpieces! Bay is a master of shooting action, and any critic who calls him a terrible filmmaker should be ashamed of themselves.
Michael bay was pretty much destined to direct the transformer movies. His CGI and use of great fight sequences is whats needed in a transformers movie. Thats the whole purpose of transformers while keeping the story simple. Like DBZ
Michael Bay was no different than the directors of B-movie schlock who worked for Cannon Films in the 1980s, except Bay was backed by major Hollywood studios. He was the predecessor of Zack Snyder.
13 hrs is by far his best film he's made. Love him or hate him, he knows how to do action. I personally find his films entertaining as hell bar the Netflix film and a couple of Transformer films. He's a good director and one of the stand out directors of our time. Given how rubbish the majority of the far too many films that are made nowadays, I'll happily take a MB film any day.
13 Hours does not get nearly enough credit. The cast in it are excellent and the action is exactly what it needed for what the story is trying to portray.
Michael Bay is headed towards being the John Carpenter of action cinema. Critically bashed when came out, yet 20 years from now will be regarded as innovative and ahead of his time.
"Pearl Harbor" has still one of the best attack sequences in movie history. The whole full japanese attack sequences with all the explosions, the ship & the airplanes is something of phenomenal. Probably also Cuba gooding Jr last great film role😂
When I used to live in Miami, I went with a coworker to eat lunch in Coral Gables. We met her dad there because he worked out at a gym across the street. We were eating, and three guys came in and asked to speak with her dad. They told him Michael Bay noticed you, and wants to speak to you. I didn't see or meet him, but her dad got a part in Pain and Gain in the gym scenes. Lucky!!!!
Transformers 2 is what hurt him. He was set after 2007 to do "2012 War for Souls" or "Prince of Persia Sands of Time". Paramount wanted to jump on a sequel from the first Transformers success, Bay didn't want to right away, he said he was exhausted from working on the film for 5 years. Paramount told him they would find another director and Bay would loose all rights to the franchise. Bay immediately caved. I asked him if he was selling out, he literally said to me, "There is no such thing as selling out." That's when the Michael Bay I knew was gone for good.
Unironically one of my favorite directors. It's not high art but there will be always the term bayhem set into movie history. Also directors that tried to imitate his style weren't really successful

FYI, the reused scene in Transformers 3 from The Island was not due to budget constraints but because an extra was involved in an accident, so they decided not to use the footage.
Michael Bay is the closest we have to Tony and Ridley Scott's filmmaking style today. Those guys care about how cool the movie looks, they care about nice visuals, which is something lacking today.
I truly think it’s just the titles. I’m 40 and don’t pay much attention to director names when watching movies. I know it sounds simple but a poster pic and title always made my mind up when determining what I’d watch next time while walking through the theatre. I’ve apparently seen and loved a lot of his films. That’s a trip lol. The ones that didn’t do well in theatres had bad titles imo. Definitely saw 13 hrs and loved it, but not the ambulance or the other one. Anyhoot thanks for the upload!
His fellow directors admire his shots. I don't hate Michael Bay; he made a niche for himself and became a successful director. What I don't like is the effect it had on the industry where producers see his films make money and fund projects that are going to be more action oriented and less focused on story. There are several good directors like Nolan, Spielberg, Michael Mann or James Mangold, sometimes JJ Abrams, who can make an action movie that still can keep its characters as the main focus and Bay is not that. Still I respect him an awful lot. And I will admit, I kinda liked the attack scenes in Pearl Harbor (2001)
Michael Mann was at his best with Heat and The Insider, I personally didn’t like the digital look of Collateral and Public Enemies tho, his style looked a bit different and generic in those. I agree with what you said tho

Ambulance was his best movie in yeaes, and really shows how he has improved and matured in his direction style. he is no more the sexualized product placement Bay anymore. and currently he is working for his next project, there I'll save your 27 minutes from watching this
I respect him more than I like him. He knows how to get an audience into theaters and his explosions are awesome, but his product placements can be a bit much and Transformers 2 is just terrible in every way (on and off screen) To be fair, he did direct one of the greatest commercials of all time
There is a theory that Michael Bay is basically a big fan of the Coen Brothers, which is supported by the fact that he works with actors who were in the films of those independent filmmakers (The most obvious example: John Turturro). To me, that was just a coincidence, until I saw "Pain and Gain" which in some ways resembles a Coen brothers movie: a story of petty criminals who get involved in a kidnapping that goes wrong.
He's considered by his fellow directors as the top expert at blending practical effects and CGI. I guess it's something no one knows how hard to do it is unless they tried.
I'd put James Cameron films especially T2 as the top of the heap for blending CGI and practical VFX

He was working some practical fx for a passion project titled Tavo Tuesday and blew himself to bits like Wile E. Coyote.
Well Bay kinda predicted the gi joe transformer crossover.
I respect him more than I like him. He knows how to get an audience into theaters and his explosions are awesome, but his product placements can be a bit much and Transformers 2 is just terrible in every way (on and off screen)
To be fair, he did direct one of the greatest commercials of all time
One of My Fav Directors.
His practical effects use is the best.
He's the 🐐
Bad Boys 2 is FUKN AWESOME
He’s a director for a particular audience
No mention of his produced television series The Last Ship??
what was that crash scene at the start from? looks wild for lack of safety
I'd like him more if he doesn't rely so much on shaky cam and explosions
There is a theory that Michael Bay is basically a big fan of the Coen Brothers, which is supported by the fact that he works with actors who were in the films of those independent filmmakers (The most obvious example: John Turturro). To me, that was just a coincidence, until I saw "Pain and Gain" which in some ways resembles a Coen brothers movie: a story of petty criminals who get involved in a kidnapping that goes wrong.
