This is the video that kickstarted my ability to defend myself on the ground. It's a simple concept but "don't let anyone control your head" is by far the most important concept in defense
Garry is my favorite martial artist and when I watched this match originally I immediately started using this escape and it works wonders! Especially if you're able to start the escape a bit early. Great breakdown but don't get too famous! I don't want too many people understanding my best moves lol
Nice! Glad it was useful to you. Once you start hitting this escape consistently, they will try to come over with the arm that you're framing on and take it to the other side of your body. When they do, you can combine it with Marcelo Garcia's elbow push escape!
As an instructor I have now began teaching this to my students as opposed to a pure crossed face approach,it's not the person face that is threat it's connecting their hands .
DAMN this video is a great resource. I own both johns pin escapes and own instructionals of the whole squad, and this video of you boiling it down to core simplicity is still REALLY VALUABLE. Thank you and instant sub.
Hey! Thanks for this. I used this concept in my rolls today and it really helped my stop from getting smashed from side mount and half guard! Still worked pretty well in gi.
@@bjjsimplified I was also able to force scrambles and got to the turtle defense that you talk about in your other vid as well! It just came to me as I was rolling and then I watched your vid with the turtle escape. I was like, “Hey! I did that too!”
@@izzate7 Haha! That's awesome. As I mentioned in one of the replies here, you'll need to combine the escape with one that goes to the other side as well so that if he overcommits to defending your primary escape, you have one waiting on the other side. The Marcelo Garcia elbow push escape's a good one ruclips.net/video/nbVPa3IEE3k/видео.html
Gordon recently used the strategy of "backtracking" last week, when he passed Pedro's guard and let Pedro re-guard multiple times just to wear him out. I have a feeling Garry was doing the same thing here just from bottom position. You can tell how hard Gilbert was working and Garry was barely breaking a sweat. Wear the opponen down over several minutes before going for a sub.
Can this be applicable when the opponent has "Door Stop" control eg: they're going for a reverse crossface (crossface on the far side or elbow wedge) and wedging your hip with their arm on the near side? I'm having trouble dealing with the hip wedge. Cheers!
If you control their crossface arm well and they try to transition to the reverse crossface, you can switch to the elbow push escape (Marcelo Garcia). Here's an example: ruclips.net/video/nbVPa3IEE3k/видео.html If you're successful in this transition, he will not be able to apply the reverse crossface and therefore make it difficult for his other arm to wedge your near side hip as well. Hope this helps!
Yeah I agree. It's almost like Burns was being to reactive. Worried about what Tonon was going to do next. Still a very impressive low energy escapes. I've see Marcelo use and teach this for years but I think Tonon is doing something a little different

So simple but effective! 😊 Thanks for watching. 🤙🏼
listen to Priit Mihkelson, its not the head at all.
Watching that first slow-mo over and over and over and over and over and over
Nice!

It's so simple too! That's what I love about it. Glad you liked the breakdown!
Damn didn't expect such a great breakdown, you earned my sub, great work brother!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
bro what a great breakdown. subbed!
Love this. So many of the BJJ explanations aren’t shown during live rolls so they are always oversimplified. Thanks for the video breakdown.
Used this concept in tonight's class against a two weight classes heavier purple belt. Worked like a charm ! Keep 'em coming ! Kudos !

wow this is such an awesome channel!
I find myself using this concept lately and it works well, prevent them from gaining head control.
Extremely useful! I love the simplicity of the videos and the clear explanation! Thank you
Man this is so f'ing great

@@bjjsimplified here something with Gi...same concept! ruclips.net/video/OIxbRjbgMC0/видео.html
@@gianpaolo19 Good find!
Its a good concept against people who lack top-control. A simple arm-staple would’ve done the job.
wow! he just prevents sidecontrol from just holding the arm 2 on 1 ??
How bout a video that shows Gilbert Burns’ ability to pass an elite guard like Tonin’s almost at will.
garry was the most technical member of dds
Do we not need to care about them getting a far side under hook?
If you deny them upper body control and keep them low with their underhook by your hip, it shouldn't be a problem. 😊
@@bjjsimplified thank you
This is more like a prevention then defense. The side control isn't fully applied. If it's fully applied then it's gonna be harder to escape
