You’ve got to respect a man who goes full Colonel Sanders with the hair.
Oh yeah he did didn't he? I wonder if that was his inspiration -like while eating some KFC.
Uncle Gary (Uncle Sam)
He definitely won this years KFCC
Easily 2 most feminine guys in BJJ
Why??
Garry does this thing all the time, he gives you the back to roll for a knee bar or anckle lock. Gordon just knows how to kill the position.
LOL, yea please link me a match where Garry lost back position on a step over knee bar. . . . . . .
I mean it makes sense a guy that trains with you would pick up on the nuance
Gary threw this match, its quite obvious, he didnt want to take Gordon's energy for later rounds.
@@ceceroxy2227100%
Tonan obviously threw the match or they both did.
And it isn’t unique tho these 2 it goes on everywhere between teamstes for decades.
Garys hair submitted Gordon's
Yes, a key aspect of this match most people missed. In fact you might argue Gary won this match overall
Almost equal skills but a way different physicality. Tbh it's pretty cool to see students surpassing their mentors (Craig defeating Lachlan, Pena beating the guys that defeated Rómulo and now Gordon surpassing Garry).
@high horse Juice or not, Gordon is about 15cm taller than Garry anyway... Of course he is much bigger.
If you actually look at how much Gordon was relying on his physical attributes in comparison to his technical prowess you’d see this is a simple case of his teacher having done his job properly and thus producing a student better than himself. That, in conjunction with Garry actually going out with the goal of submitting Gordon and ending up rolling for an entrance into cross ashi garami that was not there, resulted in the tap.
@@kianbazarjani194 I see your point, but I've also heard Gordon has vicegrips for hands, which is hard to see, but can make all the difference in key moments.
Gordon's skill is also much better. Just look back at fights between tonon and keenan. Keenan absolutely dominates tonon, but Gordon dominates keenan
@@Karanar what? keenan vs garry hasn't taken place in SIX years.. was all pre danaher and some was gi/points.. no-gi garry today is on another level-especially sub only (the only good ruleset).. please check the facts before making silly statements
When u let go of one of your opponents arms just to give a chance to tap is beyond mastery. This dude is in a league of his own. GOAT.
he didnt let go, garry escaped the grip on his hand and was going to try ease the strangle off, gordon raised is arm to stop garry reaching the strangle hand
Gary escaped his arm but Gordon hid his strangle hand under his own chin, making it inaccessible for Tonan to peel off. It’s one of the reasons it’s so important to go ear to your opponents ear when applying a RNC.
Here's a fact. When skills are equal in Jiu Jitsu, Size and Strength DOES MATTER. And even if they aren't equal, Size still matters, but size/strength makes much more of a difference when their skills are fairly equal. Gordon is bigger and stronger and Just as good as Garry.
Size, strength, endurance and stamina always matters, no matter who is against who. Theyre always a factor, just like experience and skills are a factor.
Yes but the critical moments was decided by the tactical error on that leg lock attempt that gave up his back and Gordon’s solid fundamental to keep his knee to the floor. Both dudes are still legends ofc but Gordon is the best at what he does, at least for the time being.
Hes juicy 💉
Completely agree. Even if Gary is slightly better than Gordan technically, Gordan is a lot bigger and is 100% focusing on no gi. Gary also trains mma. I do think it’s weird that Gary gave his back so easily knowing how good Gordan is on the back but that was probably just a tactical error. Gordan has most likely passed Gary in submission grappling.
size and strength are not the catch all that you believe they are. Gary Tonon was not better or even equal to Gordon Ryan at this point, it's not anything against Gary, gordon ryan is literally just a grappling freak even in comparison to the greats. That's just how it is. Gordon could have been dehydrated and a week and a half into a fast and still not lost.
When you realize the mistake you made a decade ago taking some punk under your wings
juntjoo nunya 😂😂😂
Gordan is something special. He was tonnen's student a few years ago and now look at him!
Tonnen is an elite elite BJJ artist and to submit him you need to be extra special
When the student surpassed his instructor it's not a mistake that's he made ten years ago its everything thing the teacher did right ten years ago. Gordon Ryan is living proof that Gary Tonon is not only one of the greatest bjj graplers in the world but one of the greatest bjj instructors. Gordon is the finished product, props to Gary and John Danaher of course.
@@JSTIZZY189 and Tom Deblas its insane how he doesn't get credit for them two. He trained Gary his whole life and and early gordo
lol I remember meeting both these two out on a night out in Cardiff in the UK, I think it was after Polaris 2 I think. Gary and Gordon were both in the smoking area by themselves and I instantly recognised them and went all fan boy LOL. They were cool, and it was awesome to meet them, little did I know the tall dude who quietly stood there (Gordon) with Gary would one day be what he is today. I had a funny photo we posed for, but i lost it on an old phone :(
Thanks for uploading these matches FLo!
When you introduce a friend to a Video game only for them to man handle you on it barely after 😂
Prime example of teaching someone everything you know. Two of the greatest grapplers ever.
Thought it said Gordon Ramsey and I was a bit disappointed I didn't see a chef getting choked for forgetting the lamb sauce
underrated comment
gary tonon has been in like 3/5 of the best adcc matches in history🤣
What's your top 5?
Both absolute BEASTS!
Gordon Ryan makes Elite grapplers look ordinary, and they aren't.
Unbelievable. 🤷♂️
Ryan literally too relaxed when doing this, it's hard to imagine how anyone can remain that relaxed and composed doing something like that
Why is it bad to be relaxed? Being relaxed and calm is the best way, It helps you focus and think clearly..
What do you mean by “Doing something like that?”
For some reason I read this as "Garry Tonon vs Garry Tonon" and got unreasonably hype for it........now I can't stop thinking about that match.
I think it would be quite an even match
Gary Tonon looking like Uncle Sam in a rash guard. 😂
Gary is going to have get bigger and stronger to compete with Gordon. The difference in physicality between the two of them right now is enormous.
2:14 right arm underhook -> left wrist control to feed to right hand -> Leg isolates left arm. That move was fucking SLICK! The beauty of it is that Garry knows EXACTLY what Gordon is trying to do but still can't stop it!
VERY difficult to stop
The way he just puts himself in harms way on purpose is so entertaining, even though it could (would) cost him the match.
"I've never cried as hard as when he has to put down ole yellar in that movie..."
"OK but hear me out, have you ever watched Gordon Ryan have to choke out Garry Tonnen in order to win double gold at ADCC?"
Facing the goat no go grapper “how can I make this even harder on myself?” *offers up back*
I mean he was back stepping for honeyhole and gordon countered it to be fair. And then he immediately tried to put his back to the mat but Gordon do be like dat
Dani Effendi Exactly! Gary was looking for inside leg position with his right leg, presumably to back step to saddle/honey hole. It happens so very quickly, Gordon pummels hid feet back inside, gets a shin to shin, then elevates Garry’s lead foot. Already with momentum in that direction, Garry has to take a back step to regain balance. While this leg pummeling/elevating is happening, Gordon already has his arm wrapped around Garry’s right thigh. Even if Garry had inside position, which he didn’t, Gordon’s left arm would deny the entry to saddle. You can see this around 0:06. Garry already knows this isn’t good and is trying to bail out, but Gordon keeps control and works towards the back. The entire sequence takes about 2 seconds and shows how well these guys know each other’s game.
Pray an act of perfect contrition everyday
“Maybe Gary is gonna show how to defend the back” 😂
Hahaha that was a good one
🤣🤣🤣
i like how xande admits that he wasn’t paying attention lol
Best WWE match I’ve ever seen
Man that's a huge size and strength advantage
Gordon says this match was the most heartbreaking of his career
But I think it's the proudest for Garry Tonon
Why?
@@brmars6516 Garry Tonon is his trainer
@@nandawahab386 no I meant y it was the most heartbreaking for Gordon
@@brmars6516 same reason
Waaw Thank you 🙏
I took a leglock seminar with Gary Tonon and Eddie Wolverine Cummings together in California when they were competing in EBI. They had a few teammates with them. A Korean guy and an Italian lady. I got a Gary Tonon t-shirt. Also have an instructional by Gary Tonon and Eddie Wolverine Cummings. Got all of John Danaher's leglock instructionals too along with his other sets.
David Tice that's awesome. The "Italian girl" is Gordon's Brazilian girlfriend Natalia Santoro.
@@aplus1080
So the Italian girl is the one on the Gordon Ryan instructionals? Someone just told me today she's a bodybuilder type and competes in submission grappling and maybe MMA.
I speak Italian so I was talking to her in Italian.
@@davidtice4972 - sounds like you met Eddie Cummings girlfriend, not Natalia - I think her name is Ottavia. She's Italian - you can hear her cornering in some of Eddies matches.
Gordon is the best grappler but Garry is the most fun to watch. Garry's matches are always amazing and even my friends who don't know BJJ can get into watching Garry's matches
It’s crazy to think this was the last ADCC. What a difference haha.
Look at the size difference ! Kudos to Tonon for wanting to prove himself as the best by doing ABSOLUT'es
Can't help but to be a fan of ryan
People complaining Garry gave up his back are the same type that think heel hooks take no skill lol.
He needs to watch exit the system
Perfection
I just watched exit the system this morning and Gordon flawlessly shut down all of Gary's defence and used his strengths against him
Lol
Essa luta aí teve a maior cara de marmelo, pro Gordon (que treina com o Tonon) não se cansar tanto para as demais lutas
To en messed up the pass and it caught him. That reverse step is one of my favourite passes too
Here after Gordon went on podcast at JRE. You really know what was going through Gordon’s head here...
Been looking for that spot in the podcast and can't find it
The last 10 minutes
@@LaloJGL1
Thanks bro 🤙
everyone's talking about the size advtange. Obviously that's a factor, but this was very much a highly technical approach and finish by gordon. It was perfectly executed and beautiful.
That was an absolute clinic by Gordon
Submitting GT that quick is amazing work tbh.
not when it's a work, lol
Ryan is a big guy.
Xande called it right off the bat about giving his back.
Was going for knee bar but Gordon kept his leg flat to the ground.
Yeah, because if he didnt give the back, he would dominate this match with his 60 pounds disadvantage.
@@imightdeletethislater3810 I don't think even Garry thinks that.
didn't think I'd see you here. love your content.
@@letstalkcaliber704 My point is that Garry had next to zero chance of winning this. Gordon said it himself in a podcast that the match was a reflection of how their sparring sessions go usually. Size disadvantage plus knowledge of the matchup. Romulo and Roger fought it out in the 2009 Worlds even though they were from the same team. Romulo immediately jumped guard. I didnt see anyone call bullshit there ''Oh did you just jump guard against the best pressure passer in history? Come on mahhhhhn.'' Its not like he had a choice, much like Garry here. He knew he couldnt take Gordon down, couldnt leg lock him and couldnt play guard against him.
that finish, starting at the time he trapped his left arm, was magic.
Gordon é brabo mesmo!
Watching Gordon Ryan is like watching a Boa Constrictor slowly squeezing the life out of it's prey.
Student tapping out teacher. Well he knows all of his teacher’s tricks. Tonon looks so old now. He was so young when he went against Ron Gracie back in the days (one of the best match in bjj)
who is announcing? Did he really act like he could strangle Gordon?
They claim "in jiu-jitsu size doesn't matter" and yet here we see the big dude easily defeating the small dude who gave him his black belt.
Lol salty
Bjj is meant for defense vs bigger dudes but when the bigger dude is a bjj beast also hahaha plus that idiot gave his back to Gordon thinking he can have fun stupid ass
Kalle Pikku no one said that? Must factor size and skill
Smaller man that knows BJJ will beat larger man that doesn't. See UFC 1 for more details.
Kalle Pikku first who’s “they”? Second, a bigger trained jiu Jitsu athlete likely beats a smaller trained athlete. A non trained bigger athlete cannot beat a small trained athlete. Attributes matter when both are highly skilled. Not to mention the fact that you’re talking about Gordon Ryan who is the best of this generation of jiu Jitsu athletes
It’s not uncommon for people who train together to go light in a match when they’re forced to face off so they can conserve the winners energy for the next match
Submits one of his instructors this dude literally out of his mind in a good way
10 seconds and the fight is over
Wow, a 1 armed rear naked choke? Never seen someone pull it off and be strong enough to get the tap especially both being top level. Very impressive
This seems to be a staple of Gordon Ryan.
Rotational finish will change your life haha
the one finish is achieved by technique, not strength
What the other guys said, he is using the opposing force of his elbow rotating up and his chest puffing out to complete the choke; technique not strength
@@jaketyler4938 yup
Tonon was going for the saddle. It didn’t work but he wasn’t giving up the back.
Uhmm. He did give up the back...
@@paulrobinson3534 the point is it wasn't intentional he was going for a high risk move and gordon took advantage
@@hardone316 yep, and also gordon was so aware of that saddle entry and immediately defended by crossing his legs, forcing tonon to try and defend the backtake
Paul Robinson use your brain with the context pal. He meant he didn’t just intentionally give up his back like the commentator first suggested.
Yepp, saddle then a kneebar attempt.
I always respect a teammate and team leader laying down to get their guy over
I didn't see the excitement of playing sweet child O'mine intro anymore on this game .
As Bad as I’m Sure it Hurt to lose for Garry on this Day.. he on the inside has to be Beyond Proud that His Student became the King 👑
Too big, too strong, too god
No-gi GOAT
David Nuñez don’t forget: too roided out
W Baldwin Bro, don’t be delusional. His transformation was abrupt. Just look at his girlfriend; she’s a bodybuilder who is notably juicing (ie. Masculine traits). I couldn’t care less but don’t see the need of being self-delusional
W Baldwin he was already in his prime, training everyday, with the strictest training and life routine, immediately prior to getting jacked. Nothing to be shamed about; pretty much everyone in the Bjj and no gi competition circuit is juicing.
@W Baldwin danaher is juicing himself or at least hes on medical trt.
@W Baldwin It's obvious for everyone who has followed him over the years.

That’s a great coach right there!! You know you’ve done your job when your student turns out like that.
Your user name is Quite Based TBH
2:45 mins in, Gordon uses his left hand to pry Garry's nose up just enough to slip the hand under the chin. After that, he walks his finger tips up the right shoulder AND uses his head for leverage. I've spent some time here and had success even as a blue belt. Good stuff!
Wow, Gordan is a beast.
In a recent UFC event Alex Olivera tapped to Randy Brown to a 1 arm rear naked choke and the commatary team were kinda confused and said people don't tap to a one arm RNC , they said you gotta have the second arm locked in as well. Well here is the perfect example that if your song enough and know what your doing than yes you can tap your opponent with a 1 arm RNC.
Garry tonnon : let's learn how to escape from back attack 😂🤣🤣
He gave his back. Jesus. What.
OR hes 50 pounds lighter
He didn't give it. Gordon took it. Start watching at :09 and take position and weight into account. LIke someone who knows jiu-jitsu would. At least with the commentator you can chalk it up to a bad angle or lack of focus.
@W Baldwin 100%, but it starts much before that. At 0:09 you see Gary try to backstep and Gordon immediately posts his right arm to prevent it. Gordon then changes the post to a waist grab and pulls Garry with both arms. That constant pulling pressure and tight ride is why Garry looks immobilized.
Once Garry stands up and Gordon pivots to his backside, that's when Garry knows he's threatened with a crab ride or eventual back take. So while Gordon is falling back to initiate the back take, Garry attempts the kneebar before Gordon has full leg or upperbody control.
Garry didn't give up his back, he simply made a counter move that exposed it and Gordon countered so that he couldn't regain positioning.
Garry went for a reverse Ashi Garami. It's a battle for grips. If you can maintain a grip on their lower legs, it's difficult for them to create actual back exposure. Gordon broke him down into an unathletic position with control around Garry's hips. The moment Garry lost the grips he had to defend. If you're thinking that move is too risky you need to remember the alternative is to try to guard pass from an inside position the 200 lb #1 no gi grappler
its' a work. same team. yea he let it happen
I've read Garry Tonon vs Garry Tonon
The ultimate scramble. The match we need but we do not deserve. hahaha
*Spider-man pointing at Spider-man*
when you submit your own instructor in a tournament.
Gary looking like Charlie Hunman going as a conquistador for Halloween.
Those body triangles look hard af to get out of.
They're almost IMPOSSIBLE! I've trained with guys who took my back and body-triangled me, and all I could do was literally defend a choke for 3 minutes just to finish the round and survive. It's almost impossible to get out of a really tight body-triangle without desperate measures such as poking someone in the eye. In a sporting MMA event, it's very tough. The best strategy is probably not to get there in the first place.
@@danielt.4330 100% agree
I'm more scared of body triangle than choking arm.
@@danielt.4330 indeed very hard but if you are very flexible and can get your lets up high enough. You can hook one leg and swing your legs up to kinds grab that triangled foot.
The counter is to ankle lock the foot that is across your body. Swing your foot over the straight leg of his triangle and make sure it is against the ground so he can’t unhook it and then apply force with your foot backwards and hips forward to attempt to break his ankle if the ankle pops out then it’s fine too cause you are now out of the body triangle, so either you break his ankle or you get out of the body triangle both are good. Of course with both arms defend against the choke the whole time
Tell me you like KFC without telling me you like KFC.
Beastmode
Gordon is just built for strictly jiu jitsu, the dude is so technical very high IQ AND has mass and knows how to use it. It's just really unlikely for a smaller guy to ever beat him. In MMA it would be another story, but their are better builds for certain sports and bigger guys always have had advantage in wrestling and pure grappling. I'm a small guy and in ancient Greece the only sport where weight wasn't a factor was Pankration, aka no rules except no biting or eye gouging or killing.
Why didn't they show the part where he held Garry's hand up?
Isn’t this teacher vs student?

The difference seemed to be patience and composure.
Never watched this sport but from watching the video do they not have different weight classes?
Was Garry tonon a teacher to Gordon Ryan?
Yes, Tonon paid for Ryan to make it to his gym for years, train fees, gas, etc. Student beating his teacher basically. Pretty sure they're BFFs. However u need to consider the size difference. This is in a division where any weight can enter to prove they're the best. But Ryan had a HUGE size advance over Tonon.
That wrist lock with the right hand and the trap with leg on the left arm was nasty asf
Crazy I wonder if they worked @ 70% effort during training to get more volume in?
I'm surprised about the astonishing number of white belts who think Tonon gave up his back, and don't even know what a backstep is. That back take as a defense of the backstep is amazing
We’re white belts, how are we supposed to know shit like that
How much of a savage do you have to be to get a tap from a rear choke with one arm
I find I've got a better squeeze one handed with my left arm if I put my chin on my hand

It's easier than you might think - try it
blud took tonon's back in less than 5 seconds 😭🙏🏼
He is like Marcelo Garcia I think. Gordon is a great grappler but might not be good in MMA because of ground n pound. Would like to see his transition to MMA and see if he can be the next Maia or something. Dillion’s transition was good just curious about Gordon in MMA.
