Watch Calumet Inn which is from Hotel Hell. There are 2 spoiled sisters who took care the hotels. The oldest was 32 years old crybaby and even gone for 3 months while the youngest was 27 years old lazy and irresponsible.
A point I have heard Gordon make in one episode was "As a restaurant, you need to be making food that's BETTER than what people can make at home". So even if the food that some of these restaurants serve would pass as decent if a relative made it for you at home, the point of going to a restaurant is for the better than home cooked food. It's gotta be worth the customer's time and money.
@@TheBluePony3 💯 . I remember that quote! He's also pointed out is that restaurant food should be priced about 4 times what it cost to make so that you can make profit and cover overhead and everything. I always keep that in mind when going to a restaurant. Not only does the food have to be better than what I can cook at home, I have to be willing to pay 4 times what it's worth. We don't eat out much. You can get a Tomahawk steak at Costco for 55 bucks and feed a family of 4 and have a bone for the dog. It Takes some effort and it's best done on the grill. You just have to take your time and get used to timing. Throw in 5 bucks of potatoes, butter, milk and chives and you have a 60-70 dollar meal that YOU KNOW is fresh, cooked in a clean kitchen or on a clean grill, a treat for the dog and its fucking delicious. At a restaurant, they would charge you at least 50 bucks for a single plate of steak and potatoes. Smh. I can make a giant thing of spaghetti for about 10 bucks. It lasts our small family 3 days. No way I can find even a single serving for 10 bucks. And don't get me started on lasagna. It's more expensive to make than spaghetti. Maybe 15 bucks but it makes such a giant amount that you can feed several people and have left overs. Not to mention that it costs about 2 dollars to make a giant batch of cookies (after dividing up the cost of a pound of flour and a pound of butter and all that) or that MOST people already have everything they need in their kitchen to make a cake with a simple frosting. Got going. Lol. Tldr cook more. It's cheaper. And you eventually get really good at it and get to the point where you can just sort of make stuff up. If you go out to eat, know that you can probably do better with practice. Unless it's sushi because that shit is hard. Everything has to be absolutely perfect and single pieces are cheaper than buying sushi grade salmon. Omg I need to stop replying while fasting. Lol
“You should take your restaurant and stick it. I’m gone.” Mother Mary cared so much for the business that Gordon stayed because of her and the staff as well since all of them really wanted the restaurant to succeed. I’m just so glad that Sous Chef Mateen had a good career as an executive chef. What I would die for to get a taste of Mary’s Red Velvet Cake 🍰 😋
I'm glad Shelly's mom is not spoiling her but she's always telling her right in her face what to do and what to not to do. She's even calling her daughter "A spoiled woman" or something.
Makes me wonder what the daddy did… maybe he was the spoiler/enabler. It’s possible the mum was very overindulgent towards at one time or both folks were guilty of spoiling her in the past & she was simply trying to right her prior wrongs, which is a noble thing to do. Showed tht she really loved her. Maybe the father was absent & made up for it by giving in to her demands as this is not real love. Then again, I’m only making creative speculations. it’s plausible that she was born this way or some unfortunate stuff happened to her that was out of anybody’s control. However this is NOT an excuse for her behavior!
It makes me wonder how she was raised or if she just happens to be that way… always being critiqued at home can lead one to be very defensive of the things they do once they’re grown.

I can confirm as someone who ate there before that Blackberries did indeed have a mouse problem. I remember sitting in one of the booths there and between the booths and the wall was a tiny alcove in which I noticed a dead mouse. We left afterwards lol.
“ignorant” says it all. Especially with denial with an undertone of violence. People like this use shame and violence to try and control others. This is why when these types approach you need to be prepared for all outcomes.
Shelly is a prime example of a spoiled brat. She can do no wrong, she's the "queen" of everything in her life except owning her mistakes or even admitting that she has ever made one.
Those kind of people (like Shelly) are perpetual victims. They can do no wrong, everything bad that happens to them is out of their control and they will never apologize for anything.
She honestly seems kind of like a narcissist. She has a pre-program that everyone and everything has to follow, where she's on top, and when this is challenged she gets aggressive and often refuses to take responsibility, especially woth the mouse bit. She did seem to welcome some of the changes made, but given they shut down with some pretty harsh reviews prior to shutting down, her saying she would consider the changes mightve just been her keeping up appearances to look better.
It's textbook narcissism. Arrogant, manipulative, and passive aggressive, while always playing the victim and having no accountability or self awareness.
Having a world class chef come in and guide you is such an incredible opportunity for your average local restaurant owner and so many of these people are just unbelievably ungrateful.
The moment it was revealed that the mom took out her retirement savings, I was completely confident that the owner was going to be narcissistic, stubborn, and/or a terrible leader. No one, nor the elder, should never use the retirement savings for something other than exactly what it's for.
The thing that bugged me about the mouse is if you show me a place that hides holes in the wall behind records, I'm going to assume they have a pest problem regardless. I don't need to see a mouse at that point, so it would have been wholly unnecessary to plant one.
As someone who lived in the same city as this restaurant it’s really sad to see. BlackBerrys was the first black owned restaurant opened in Plainfield and even now we barely have any left. Such a shame that Shelly ruined it, a piece of our towns history is gone forever now.

We REALLY need one of these on Amy's Baking Company. The episode so batshit insane it broke the show. Of course, there have been like 90,000 videos on it, but come on. It's legendary, and I need to see MermaidGrove's drawings fighting with Sam and Amy.
Technically Gordon didn’t fix the place since Amy refused to take any advice. Everything I’ve heard is the place tried to do it’s own reopening and still was the same shit shop it was on the show.
@@alyssarichardson2544Is Amy actually mentally unstable? I've seen the way she carries herself and even just the way she looks around her... she strikes me as somebody with serious issues, and obviously I'm not qualified to diagnose anyone with a mental illness, but seeing that even Sammy seems scared of her and those burning eyes, I wouldn't be too surprised. If so, I'm more concerned with her getting proper help.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the mom and Shelly had a falling out after this. I like to think family can stick through anything but Shelly’s attitude and her consequences push their relationship past the borderline.
I love these videos so much. I clicked the moment I got the notification! These deep drives are something I’ve been trying to find in the community and I love the way you present them!
I really don't understand why Shelly acted like she did, at no point did she even try to co-operate with Gordon, a guy who is literally trying to save her restaurant. It's like she wanted the place to fail. This combined with her complete disregard for everyone else involved in the business (including her own mother), easily makes her one of the most thoroughly unlikable owners featured on the show.
I believe it would’ve been cool if Blackberry’s became a cake restaurant. Mainly because the cake was the only good thing that Gordon ate, and also because I personally don’t see any cake restaurants, and believe it would have been an interesting thing
There's this place near my town called Rick's Dessert Diner. Their main deal is cakes, pies, cheesecakes, sundaes, all that kind of stuff. I've been meaning to go back sometime.
Chitterlings are a huge southern cuisine. Just gotta clean them thoroughly. I personally can’t the dish but one of my childhood friend’s mom use to cook them every weekend and you could smell down throughout the neighborhood lol.
Thank you for the video. I've been hoping for an update on this place. I had hoped he could have just given the mom the set up for a bakery. She was the only one cooking with love. Also the animated part was great 😂
Oh! I know Ms. Marie personally. We went to the same church before the Rona hit. She would cook for the church's morning service and it would be the highlight of my Sunday to eat one of her cakes
Kitchen Nightmares was a very good show though formulaic. Most of the restaurants failed even with the help but almost all of them were in massive debt and/or just went back to their old ways
And even some of the ones that succeeded turned around and sold their business to fund other careers. It's a tough industry even if you're succeeding, and not everyone wants to stick around.
So funny enough Shelly was actually my high school lunch lady. Like no joke after some of my friends saw the episode we connected the dots and realized that the lady giving us terrible cafeteria food was actually famous for that.
I am convinced that Gordon asks if something is microwaved as an olive branch to just admit it’s bad food because he clearly knows when something has been microwaved he doesn’t need to ask
Those reviews that were posted years after the restaurant closed are genuinely from the worst kind of people. Like they're saying "I saw you on a TV show and you didn't look good so I'm gonna try and damage your business even more". Review sites should try and verify genuine reviews so the fake ones don't get through.
Another great episode I NEED proper closure on is "Sushi Ko." That episode hits HARD, because the owner/chef is just SO DEPRESSED, and its a rare case of an owner being verbally abused by his staff on KN instead of the other way around.
Aramark is a food service temp agency. I worked for them while getting my culinary arts degree. They usually hired us to work in college campus cafeterias or sports stadiums. The writers of her update definitely added some fluff.
If I have to give a suggestion for your next episode to cover, you should definitely look into Chappy's. It's one of the only few episodes where the ending had the narrator implicitly say that Chappy was just hosting a front all along, and that he immediately returned back to his old ways as soon as Ramsey was out of the door. Would be really interesting to see where he, Starr, and the rest of the staff are now.
Some people are so spoiled, it's insane. If my parents chipped into my business, I'd be busting my ass day in & out. Remember boys & girls, if someone ever takes a chance on you, you repay it back tenfold.
Best kitchen nightmare episode is Amy's baking company. Favorite gems from the episodes are " you should know what you like to eat then sir" , " my food is not store brought, it is delicious did you even try it " , Banishing customers for complaining where is their food, and husband think he is a gangsta.
I feel bad for Mary and the staff they are really good people and deserve the best. But not Shelly she is a spoiled brat and is ungrateful for what was given to her. When my parents give me something I make sure their generosity is not taken for granted and work hard for it.
Imagine accusing the known helper you called for of sabatoging the resturant... The balls that guy had of blaming Ramsey for the rat that THEY never noticed in broad daylight when he had no excuse to explain it, if its dead, then its been there for a while, before Ramsey even turned up Its almost as if HE was the one that planted it, not Ramsey
I binged all of your earlier entries in the What happened to _____ from Kitchen Nightmares (and hotel Hell) series in a day after getting one recommended, nice to see another one
@1:30. I love that you made this reference hahah, there is actually an episode of kitchen nIghtmares where this happens. The owner would basically stop service to belly dance during a dinner rush, force the servers to do it with her, and there is a great scene where gordon laboriously explains to her that soup of the day means different soup daily, not today we have a soup. When I can look up the episode I’ll edit this but all I can remember now is that her name was Rishi and it was a restaurant in Texas, but I’m sure searching “bellydance kitchen nightmares” will get you there hahah
Are there any similar places in the area? I personally never heard of the place until seeing the episode about it, even though I only lived a few blocks away. It wasn't until I saw this video right now that I found out where it was. I know some people who used to regularly go to another soul food place in Plainfield, but they closed down also, before I could ever go there.
Have been watching your videos, some more than once. Always like your tone and pace. Glad to see you add the drawing as they’re funny. Know that you don’t update frequently probably because of other stuff you’re busy on, but will keep on supporting and looking forward to the next one. Happy 2023.
That Shelly was high on her own narcist stench, serving barf and burnt chicken as quality food speaks of itself. She's is a massive self-centered failure that blames everything but herself. Poor grandma if she had her opportunity long ago this restaurant would have been a gold mine. Smh
“Soul food is made with love and soul, not in a wok. We’re not a Chinese Soul Food restaurant, we don’t need a wok, ok?” - Mateen Also, Mother Mary’s desserts are just so lovely. ❤❤
@@BJGvideos I think the general idea is that soul food usually involves long dedicated cooking times whereas cooking in a wok is about extremely high heat and fast cooking. Think high quality macaroni and cheese vs. stir-fry.
If i remember correctly (i looked it up intensely when i saw this episode lol), the neighborhood where the restaurant wwas located was known to have mice, which is why they got an exterminator to come once a month. the fact that the mouse was found by the door is a good indicator that it probably came from outside and died due to the preventative measures. Also why they could only remember one other instance of seeing a mouse (at least according to the edit of the episode) I do also want to add, that if you pay attention to a lot of the cut-aways, they are wearing stuff from earlier in the week and they add it so it looks like they're saying it at different times (rewatching has taught me that one lol) but this was a good video! (and hope this didn't seem condescending! just wanted to add a bit more info lol)
Honestly Shelly going on to work at Aramark makes so much sense. They feed college students the same food as prisoners! Also prisoners have protested rather than eat their garbage. Back when I had a meal plan in undergrad, Aramark was infamous for serving undercooked, overcooked, spoiled and stale food on a regular basis, and they never properly filled out or changed over the nutritional information which for me as a type one diabetic trying to get an accurate idea of carbs in the food was infuriating. Shelly must have fit right in.
Now that you mention it, I'm kind of surprised I never hear about diabetes as one of the larger issues for the fight for nutritional food in schools, prisons, colleges and workplaces. It's definitely something that should be spoken about more.
The vast majority of restaurants that are on Kitchen Nightmares ended up closing. The main reason is that by the time Gordon comes to help they are so far in debt that the improvements aren't enough to pay off the bills. If you owe 500k and start making $2500 profit a week more that's only 10k a month. It'll take 50 months to pay off that 500k, with no interest and making the same 10k a month more. Including increases is costs etc. So the business often can't dig themselves out no matter how much it improved.
I hope you've done a video on that hotel or restaraunt who's owner kept stealing all the tips and didnt pay his workers and they all quit on him mid-episode
Apart from Amy's bakery Shelly's restaurant was one of the restaurants that I wanted it to shutdown because of Shelly she was spoiled and didn't care about the restaurant one single bit if anything I feel bad for the mom she was honest and put so much love in her cakes
Old, bitter people don't change. If they go their whole lives acting entitled & rude, they don't EVER change. They're like that their whole lives. So she definitely didn't deserve Ramsey. Couldn't even thank him for HIS hard work. Notice after her kitchen appliances & decor were updated, she wanted Ramsey gone?
Oh god the one with the chitlins, dead mouse conspiracy accusation, another "crazy" owner...glad to start 2023 strong with another good MermaidGrove video.
One of my favorite parts from this episode is when Gordon and James are arguing about the mouse by the front door and James keeps asking, "Where?" and Gordon asks, "Where's the front door in your mind!?" 😆
I was born in Plainfield, NJ. The hospital I was born at was shut down because so many people got blood borne illnesses from transfusions, including my mom who got Hep C.
They never completely closed down, although most of the buildings were torn down. They now operate as JFK Medical Center-Muhlenberg Campus. I don't know about any ilnesses from transfusions or anything happening there, but I've always known they weren't a good hospital. I was born there too. When I was 4 years old my brothers friend dropped a broomstick out of a tree and it split my head open. I rode in an ambulance with my mom to go there. I couldn't tell you the exact conditon of the ambulance, but I know the electrical system was definitely screwed up. They were trying to keep me calm since I was bleeding everywhere from a head wound, so they told me to flip the 2 switches on the wall that looked like regular house light switches, to turn on the lights and sirens. I flipped the switches, and nothing happened. They seemed very surprised, and tried flipping them back and forth several times. I remember them saying "they must have cut us off" and giving up on the switches. Then when we got a few blocks from the hospital they stopped and said that my mother and I would have to walk the rest of the way because they had to go pick somebody else up. SERIOUSLY? Making a mom walk with her 4 year old son whose bleeding from the head the last few blocks?!? I really don't remember having to walk. Maybe she carried me. I know she complained about it for many years afterwards though.

I love how the mouse was this huge point of contention for the episode, Ive worked at good places but my entire greater area is mostly either at or below sea level and the most urban areas are built ontop of a city we wrecked and built ontop of *not london seattle or paris* so we have rats eveywhere and mice, just an hour ago i was walking through the busiest area of the city (at 2 am) and saw mice doing their thing, every restaurant or grocery store I've worked at just simply did their best to stay ontop of the problem, regular pest control and occasionally they'd get inside because we were hot and left the back door open and they were hungry/hot/cold so they wanted in. the fact that her and her boyfriend got so defensive about it makes it sooo much more suspicious!! like at night we;d be sitting outside and just watch the rats run around right outside the restaurant and this is totally normal. rats gunna rat and theyre way too smart(most of the time) for posion traps so these folks are leaving food out- in short, and thats probably what killed it. more birds got in then anything, i feel so bad for the night staff who had to find them before the customers did-that was a chain grocery store though, i still dont understand how the pigeon got in that one episode...
Hanging up without saying goodbye is not uncommon, especially in the South. I don't know why, but my brother used to do this and it would drive me crazy!
I am from the south...whenever my mother or aunties start bringing out the chitlins,I leave the house and don't come back until they are done lol. I just can't stomach the smell of them....
Shelly, apart from Amy, is probably the best example of this weird phenomenon with the restaurant owners on this show. I get you'd wanna make food that you would eat and enjoy, but at the same time I don't understand how they don't get that people just like them is a very, VERY small minority of customers they'll get. Amy is a psycho, but Shelly I feel like was ready to actually stab Gordon, she visibly looked like she was hiding a meltdown and trying to laugh it off. Hope her mother is doing well, though. Poor woman invested her entire retirement into it and her dessert was the only saving grace because of how awful her daughter was at managing the place and its quality.
Imo, women like Shelley & Amy are solely in the business for the “prestige” of calling themselves an owner & the dream of riches and being a “spoiled princess” in their own warped minds. They are the ultimate narcissist’s. Selfish, self-centered, manipulative, and perpetually whiny & mean; always blaming their behaviors on their self-anointed“victimhood.” I’m surprised megan (princess of Canada😂) mharkel isn’t a failing restaurant owner. She’d fit right in with Shelley, Amy, and many others!

These shows make me terrified that I'm not actually a decent cook and everyone lies to me when I cook for them
Trust me. If they were lying, you'd know
If you seeing regular customers coming back your good.
Restaurant cooking is very different from home cooking
Lol
After being accused of planting that mouse, I'm surprised Ramsay didn't just say "F you" and leave.
He almost did
He was going to but was persuaded by the owner’s mum. I really pitied the mum. She cared for the restaurant more than the owner ever did.
It probably was planted, everything else was scripted for dramas sake lol doesn’t change the fact their restaurant was failing though I guess
“You should take your restaurant and stick it. I’m gone.”
Mother Mary cared so much for the business that Gordon stayed because of her and the staff as well since all of them really wanted the restaurant to succeed. character development
I'm glad Shelly's mom is not spoiling her but she's always telling her right in her face what to do and what to not to do. She's even calling her daughter "A spoiled woman" or something.
she’s a narcissistic woman.

“ignorant” says it all. Especially with denial with an undertone of violence. People like this use shame and violence to try and control others. This is why when these types approach you need to be prepared for all outcomes.
I really like these deep dives into what happened to the restaurants.
Sounds like my ex, LOL
It's textbook narcissism. Arrogant, manipulative, and passive aggressive, while always playing the victim and having no accountability or self awareness.
Having a world class chef come in and guide you is such an incredible opportunity for your average local restaurant owner and so many of these people are just unbelievably ungrateful.
The moment it was revealed that the mom took out her retirement savings, I was completely confident that the owner was going to be narcissistic, stubborn, and/or a terrible leader. No one, nor the elder, should never use the retirement savings for something other than exactly what it's for.

Ah I remember this episode. Shelly’s mom and Mateen are the absolute gems of this episode. Sad to say, this restaurant didnt last long.

Technically Gordon didn’t fix the place since Amy refused to take any advice. Everything I’ve heard is the place tried to do it’s own reopening and still was the same shit shop it was on the show.

Another great episode I NEED proper closure on is "Sushi Ko." That episode hits HARD, because the owner/chef is just SO DEPRESSED, and its a rare case of an owner being verbally abused by his staff on KN instead of the other way around.

Also why they could only remember one other instance of seeing a mouse (at least according to the edit of the episode)
I do also want to add, that if you pay attention to a lot of the cut-aways, they are wearing stuff from earlier in the week and they add it so it looks like they're saying it at different times (rewatching has taught me that one lol) but this was a good video!
