As someone who has lived in Japan for over 3 years and understand Japanese pretty well I enjoyed watching non-subbed LycoReco so much just because how good the dialogues were. When I watch the sub version I didn't feel the same joy which is crucial to this question.
Definitely get what you mean. I rewatched the show with japanese subs and I definitely caught on to a lot more of the well written dialogue. Made it even more enjoyable than it already was.
With some understanding of the Japanese... with Subs, can still laugh at the funny voice inflections. Anyone with a few years or several hours of Anime under their belt can understand such things.

Oh yeah, that did blow up in Japan. Twitter numbers are pretty insane too. I feel like it's the same case where it got decent traction in the English speaking community but never really blew up in the same way as Japan
I literally can't get over Lycoris Recoil. I have watched a lot of anime, but just a few felt as good to watch as LR. Dunno why or how, but this anime is very special to me. Hopefully there is more Lycoris Recoil in the future! Easily AOTY for me. Oh, and good job on the video! It's always to fun watch more LycoReco content from you! :D

so i’ve watched the sub and dub of Lycoris Recoil and i’m thankful that the english VA’s put in the same amount of effort with their performances that the Japanese VA’s did

Then there's me, the one who begins to learn Japanese seriously thanks to Lycoris Recoil. Also, Anzai-san once mentioned that in the script for that phone call scene, originally it was "はいはい” but then she chose moshimoshimoshimoshi route in the rehearsal and no one objected her so she just went with it.
Personally, for me, the main reason of why Lycoris Recoil is my favourite anime (I watched like more than 150 anime, something like that) is largely thanks to the voice actors. They're juste the best I've ever heard, all the little souns ther made non stop that are so fucking cute, the "Sakanaaaaa" that everyone knows, the improvisation of the "Constipated ?" by Kurumi's VA and so on. I love juste everything of it.
And of course, there's a lot of other things like the plot with all these twists, the action scenes that are amazing, the way people interacts with each other, like between Chisato and Majima that can just casually talks like nothing... I love that so muuuuch xD

I remember when I first heard of Lycoris Recoil by watching the Supercar scene. I may not be a sharp shooter with the ability to dodge bullets, but seeing Chisato shake the fence in excitement at the possibility of driving a Lexus LFA is something I deeply relate to. So I gave the anime a chance, and I loved it. The ending is still in my daily music rotation, and so is the opening. In fact, I believe that Lycoris Recoil is the top anime of 2022, well above Chainsaw Man, Spy X Family and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, and I wouldn't be surprised if it became one of the classics of the 2020s.

Lycoris recoil was so good. I watched the anime in Japanese, English and Spanish. Wtf hahaha. Too good for an original anime. Chisato, Marin and Akari are by far the best girls of the year. Who will with girl or the year. We shall see

Saw this show yesterday and god it was amazing. Need a season 2, I hope the Japanese hype can take care of that.
I kinda wanted more from the season 1 finale, but I overall enjoyed this anime, as it was exactly what I was looking for. The girls are cute without it being a total overload, the action was exciting without being overly cheeseball, and the protagonists allies had actual utility. Anyways, it was cool.
I just finished it recently and it sparked my joy for anime again. I haven't enjoyed anime much since 2020, and this was the first anime I actually really enjoyed watching and finished since then. I have dropped spy x family and even demon slayer, but this anime really sparked joy. Chisato's whole moral and character really really sparked joy in Mr.

To me there were 3 things that made Lycoris Recoil so good....
1. It was a breathe of fresh air, it was an original that wasn't bad and at a time where I kept thinking majority of anime adaptations coming out lately were sub-par
2. The character interactions were amazing, I loved it. Give me more of it. Give me more Princess Principal for the same reasons
3. The set up for playing the ED was perfect every single time, it was so hype.
Yeah, as someone who speaks both languages, spends like 80 hours a week on school and work, and really just watches anime to rest, I can attest that your reasons are valid. Also, the Monogatari series is a linguistic masterpiece, and the English comes nowhere near doing it justice. That show is the reason I started learning Japanese. You should totally watch it.
I feel like I'm never gonna stop talking about it once I watch it haha. Definitely on my to watch list.
For me, I like this because it is actually different from the usual romcom anime that all feel the same and can't tell it apart from the outside, plus I always found ones with female protagonists a lot more interesting because they're ones I can relate to in real life and hope they can reach their full potential.

i love the show but i kept seeing people on MAL and in video streaming site comments criticizing the show for its plot holes, convenient cheap plot devices for the sake of progressing the story and the insane plot armour chisato (and majima too at the end) as why they rate it low score, but despite acknowledging all this I still enjoyed the show and kept wondering why
then it hit me eventually and i also stumbled across your video soon after as well: shows like these aren't meant to be taken seriously at all. the plot was meant to be "silly"/not well constructed and full of holes or missing details, that's not the main point of the show. the main point is just CGCDT and SoL and they've mastered it like no one else has with this unique premise like you said in your video (but it would still be cool one day to see a darker/more serious spin off where they tackle the plot better because the premise is really interesting)

Really? I don' really read a lot of reviews but its score across sites seem good enough. Most people seem to have enjoyed it. I don't think the story itself is a masterpiece but I don't see any glaring plot holes or cheap plot devices. It's a good enough plot imo. But yeah the sol parts and unique premise are defintely the highlight of the entire show imo.

Cute girls doing battle things is a really cool genre. Girls Und Panzer is one of the biggest anime franchises ever, now imagine if the tanks were 2D, and the characters bidimensional, it would destroy Kimetsu.

on the note about subtitles, i guess it depends how you use them. for example, i dont use subtitles as an exact translation but rather an idea of what the characters are saying. how i feel about what a character says still comes down to the performance of the va.

Chisato even has that unusual bond with the antagonist where the two sides in other animes would do everything possible in their universe to rip each other's throats apart.
He respected her enough to take a break from the fight because she was suffering. While in other anime, this is where the hero is too weak to fight, and the villain wastes the opportunity to kill in favor of explaining his plan or mocking the hero with a full essay.
And she's kinda like Batman with the No Killing rule.

As a Spanish speaker, I absolutely enjoyed the Spanish dub. I can't really explain it but for some reason Spanish translates more naturally from Japanese.

I mean it's a great show and as a western person, I think this is a bad example for different taste between the Japanese and the west, since every bonified weeb should be into it. Story - check, good animation - check, nice music - check, cute girls doing cute shit - check, action - check, emotional moments - check, character development - check, authentic behavior (no over the top annoying stereotypes) - check.
This show has so much going for it.
Does it have a very sophisticated backstory that could make for several interesting seasons?
Maybe not, but it is great for what it is trying to be and I think it would be suitable for a wide variety of people if they wouldn't have prejudice against it, thinking it might just be another "Upotte!" just by looking at the title or some of the action scenes.

I think there are already prize figures and they have 2 high quality scaled Chisato figures announced, whihc is really quick for an anime original. Don't think they have Kurumi yet though unfortunately.

Basically true. You know, I like Slice of life not because I'm some naive teenage or I like yuri, but because life is hard enough already, you need something to balance it out. Most of the time you're tired, depress (but I should note this, depress is not just you feeling sad, bad all the time, it's a health condition, health issues, and you should go to doctor for some medication), want to give up on college, because you can't balance work and relax.
Otherwise, I like slice of life because I feel like most of it, for example dragon maid, has more meaning than most.
One aspect I think you didn't touch on is, gun community. Japanese has a huge taste on gun girl, just like anything else, like Gundam, Kaiju, Super Sentai,... As a matter of fact, Airsoft first exists in Japan. I think this thing is kinda madness, as if you know any real girl and then military gear, they don't come together. Other than that, seeing a girl get hurt and other bad thing is the worst thing. That's why some mfks drawing goru sht on the girl.
This comes to the next thing, which is gun girl anime have a tendency to be dark, complicated or not popular. Recently, I play Girls' Frontline again, after 4 years due to 2.0 update, which make the game unplayable on your phone, just like Genshin. And I realize "these girls are cute". But before, I only focus on the gameplay or the story. Girls are girls. They can be cute, be beautiful, be charming, be kind,... That's make them a women. And I think we should make it more clear, because it's nice

I think western audience would rate it higher if it cost less to indulge in and the LN and Manga only being in Japanese might be a part of why it is less popular over here but regardless of how pricey it can be, I bought the English Blu-ray boxed set and watched it with my mom, I freaking love Lycoris Recoil!!!!!!!!
It's definitely true that things being basically translation gated hinders its growth to a Western audience. The extra content adds a lot of charm to the characters imo.

I can't say Lycoris Recoil impressed me to this extent. It is a fun watch and the main characters leave a mark in your memory. But this warmed over Le Femme Nakita with a buddy cop twist isn't setting my world on fire. Seriously, watch Alias, Nikita, Le Femme NIkita or the dozen or so variants and then watch a middle of the season episode. So much of one can be found in the other you'd swear they got separated a birth with one living in Japan while the other grew up in Hollywood.
