    O locus ille, beatus quondam, nunc deminuit.
    Unfortunately that land once blessed now has diminished.
    Nos destinatae matribus, nunc fiunt turpes.
    We were destined to become mothers, now become tarnished.
    Ploravimus lacrimavimusque,
    We lamendted and shed tears,
    sed nemo nos consolatur.
    but no one consoles us.
    Aureum cui irascebaris?
    Golden one at whom you were angry?

    This is a great example of how Miyazaki insists that there be a sense of "dignity" to the beings in his games. Yes, the beings have a grotesqueness and horror to them, but they often all retain some semblance of dignity about them too. You need that balance to sell the majesty of the world and to make its rot and ruin feel all the more meaningful.

    • @layerp
      @layerp 2 года назад +129

      Yes, but then you find Dung Eater

      @TheRedRedKroovy 2 года назад +219

      @@layerp I dunno. The Dung Eater is pretty horrible, but even he had a noble quest at first that has been twisted into a sick obsession.
      The Dung Eater was originally tasked by the Golden Order with rooting out the Curse and cleansing the Lands Between, but over time that task became an obsession that turned very twisted. The Dung Eater now seeks to spread the curse rather than attempt to remove it - even infecting the very Order itself with the Curse. Because once the Curse is part of life itself, then no one is cursed anymore. That's why his ending is called the Blessing of Despair.

But, I just found a bunch of bats and the singing stopped then I was murdered by said bats. Thinking back on it, it was really unique in the Soulsborne genre of game. You're always taught that anything with a voice is either an important boss or a friendly/hostile npc, usually friendly. So, when you hear human singing you're like "Oh there must be an npc somewhere I can meet." At least, that was what came to my mind first.

    From Software did such a great job of humanising the enemies and characters in this game. There's a moment in one of the catacombs where a larger enemy essentially laments over his fallen kindred, so much so that he completely ignores you. There are many more moments and details that give you a sense that before the shattering, you would be looking at normal citizens of the lands between, with everything and everyone since becoming corrupted beyond recognition.

    One experience for me recently was pretty cool.
    I finally reached the Altus Plateau the other day, and I was riding around exploring. I found an abandoned carraige without a chest in the cargo, but behind it was a path of corpses through a little thicket of trees. I followed the trail and saw a Pumpkin Head, sleeping on the cliff. I approached him stealthily with every intention to kill him, but I noticed just how many of those little kangaroo squirrels were surrounding me. They didn't even seem to be running away from me, like they felt safe with the Pumpkin Head there.
    Then I felt a little wash of calm over me and decided I'd just sneak around him and take the item and run. He didn't even stand up.
    I don't know if the wildlife there are actually made more numerous, or nonafraid, or if the Pumpkin Head really was nonhostile, or if it was just a bunch of coincidences - it was a very memorable and even beautiful experience.

    At first I thought it was about the shattering of the Elden Ring, but seeing how these are half-animals, I think they are singing about the arrival of the Greater Will and the Elden Beast that basically overthrew the old order of half-beasts, dragons, and giants for gods and humans.
    "Unfortunately, that land once blessed, now has diminished" not the Shattering, but the world before the eldtrees and the Elden beast's arrival from the stars.
    "We were destined to become mothers, now become Tarnished." not the state of the player. Tarnished is everyone exiled by the Lands Between and the gods' grace. they are basically excommunicated. So these Matriarchs, have become exiled from the natural order of things, or society. she is basically saying they have been reduced to animals while they belong to royalty.
    "We lamented and shed tears, but no one console us." no need to explain. they are not any different from humans, but they are treated as monsters. Their plight is clear, but nobody is willing to empathize with some "horrible bat-creature" just look at the Misbegotten of Castle Morne, or the blacksmith. Half-beasts aren't considered humans.
    "Golden One at whom you were angry?" they are questioning why the Greater Will, the Elden Beast, and Marika/Radagon had been so cruel to the first creatures of the Lands Between when they had done no harm to them.
    edit: after sote, she is talking about Marika's war on the hornsent and basically overthrowing the old system. these bats were probably divine bat beasts, just like gladiator lions and the red wolves. all lesser yet powerful deities in the lands between. the blessing she is talking about is the crucible, as it has been siphoned and given order into a tower, the erdtree. we all know who the gold one was angry at and why.

    A little fun fact: the pronunciation these creatures have speaking latin is the original one. Latin has two pronunciations: the ecclesiastic one and the original one. Some differences are, for example:
    - the letter "c" with the letters "e" or "i" right after. In the ecclesiastic one "ce/ci" are pronounced "che/chi"; in the original one instead they are pronounced "ke/ki".
    - the diphtongs such as "ae" or "oe", which in the ecclesiastic one are pronounced as "e", but in the original one are pronounced just as they are written.
    From what i can tell, these creatures have the original pronunciation.

      No, these speak in the ecclesiastic way or something similar, the v's they pronounce like in the english way or other romance language, in classical latin the v is pronounced like a w or a u.
