The dealer you bought it from put it in for a service, not an inspection. Sounds like the specialist didn't even look for the noise, because the dealer likely told them just to service it. I've had two. First one had a faulty transfer box which luckily was replaced under warranty. I traded that in for the facelift model. A couple of months later after a couple of days of rain, the Sunroof leaked. The interior was absolutely soaking. Electrics didn't work. It took Porsche three weeks to fix it. Sold it and back to BMW now.
Sorry to hear of your experience! I had a similar one with my C7 RS6 last year, the car went to Audi for a recall and they screwed it up, consequently it spent 4 month in the dealership and they had the engine out twice as they didn't listen to what I told them was a problem. It went wrong the day I picked it up again and they had it for a few more days. Fortunately this was all warranty work as I paid for extended warranty on it, otherwise it would have been well over £15k in work. When I got it back working, I went and part exchanged it for my first 911, best thing I have ever done!
Oh, man, so sorry you had to deal with all of that! I had a '21 GTS that I absolutely loved. Unfortunately, a kid on his phone ran a red light and T-boned me and it was totaled. My insurance company took 3 1/2 months to total it (!!) and then I had to wait another 3 months or so to get a new '24 GTS - which was now more powerful but more than 10% more than what the previous one cost. It's great to drive, but I don't like all the additional plastic on the front or the haptic control panel on the center console. Oh well. Anyway, enjoy the GTS...it's such a good car to drive (well, when the timing chain isn't chewing up the gears anyway).

Always buy a car where you are able to renew the approved warranty it has saved me alot of moneyy through the years. The porsche products are having more and more problems. The build quality is far away from what it used to be.
When you find a really good mechanic like the last one you went to, stick with them. Research a car before you buy it. Porsche, Audi both have the timing chain and gear problems. Very well known. At mileage, you replace as if they're an air filter. You're right to not buy a car in a hurry. Go to Italy and when you come back, the inspection will have been done and a competent mechanic will tell you that you need a timing chain and likely guides and sprockets because "they all do that".
The Macan S is amazing. I had a test drive in a full spec Macan S car with a mate who then purchased the test car from the Porsche dealer on a 3 year full maintenance lease. That is I think the only way to purchase a 90k car these days. Too much electronics.
My friend, just enjoy your Macan and don’t mind the negative comments. I own the same year and model. These Macans are a blast to drive. For those like us who have owned 911s and caymans, the macan is truly a Porsche. My advice is, change the oil every 3k miles and change the transfer case fluid every 30k miles. Those turbos burn oil pretty fast and the transfer case is prone to failure mainly due to the factory recommending the fluid replacement at 160k miles.

It's utterly stupid to buy a used performance car and delude yourself into thinking the previous owner didn't put it through its paces or, worse, abused it.
I would say you mis-sold. The people selling the car didn't know what was wrong but the Porsche engineer should have know or didn't inspect it properly.
I new a Brit guy (ex Army), who had been based in Germany, and stayed on after his service finished. He became a used car salesman there. I asked him what car to buy, if reliability was my main concern. He said "Buy Japanese"!
The dealer who sold you the car, brushed off the issue. Its a Porsche you do no get banging noises from fuel injectors. Also you have paid £7000 of your own money to get the car sorted. They should be picking up some of the bill.
I'm so sorry for this experience. Our macan is a base but fully optioned up. We've paid for nothing in repairs and it's been amazing to live with. Porsche US has been amazing to us. They replaced the transfer case for free, the door handles for free and we did get the service package which replaced disks and pads free. I would contact Porsche UK and see if they will cover it.
I’m guessing ignoring that noise you heard for a few years caused the wear on the camshaft adjusters and wore the teeth down. Should have trusted yourself and walked away from the car; there will always be another one.
I called it a day a year ago on my garage business and retired. I took time to reflect on all the money I had spent on cars over the previous 50 years. Had I been even half sensible I would now be on a world cruise in the owners suite. Now I never pay more than £10k for a car - if you take your time and do your homework you would be amazed what £10k can get you - just add a private plate.
Thanks. That was a very honest and informative video. Not many people are big enough to admit when things have gone wrong. Hopefully you'll have no more issues with it. (I do think that unless it had done mega miles, that sprocket wear was bad for what is supposed to be a high quality car).
You'd be better riding those two sheep. Far more reliable and much more economical ride... Save yourself a fortune and when you get fed up with them you can have them for Sunday lunch 😊

2017... why didn't you put it back under Porsche warranty? You would then have only been out of pocket for consumables. Lesson learned - there is no such thing as a cheap Porsche experience, however the amount for which you contribute can be controlled.
Cars are fantastic whenever they need work on them from a mechanic. Just paid a total of £940 to have the rear brakes fixed and two balljoints on the right front replaced on my 2005 Audi A6
Sorry to hear this. My wife is on her second Macan, 2018 S, now a 2021 Turbo. No problems- yet. I understand Porsche got rid of the V6 around 2020 and went with a better Audi engine.
Thank you for posting, was it high mileage? I guess what you paid to get it fixed would make buying from an approved dealer with a warranty good sense? As a side note my Wife's Polo is 7 years old, I asked the VW dealer for a quote to fit and program a new Stop/start Battery ----£328.88! so I am sorry to admit I went to Halfords £151.49 with same 5 years warranty.
If you go looking at cars and know absolutely nothing about them, take someone that does. Even the AA and RAC will inspect cars and also make sure the correct vehicle is attached to the numberplate. It can save you thousands. You should have claimed from the garage.
Yeah - all high end brands that you buy from 4 plus years old can get you. Listing to people on the LandRover forum, who have stretched their finances to buy a secondhand car and then they are in trouble when it goes wrong and have to pay out thousands to fix it. 2010-2015 onwards, cars are just so expensive to fix. Loads with tech that we don’t really need or use and engines modified to meet government emissions standards which cause the components to wear out more quickly
In my experience with all German, performance engine repairs, a noisy, so slack timing chain will always require the additional replacement of a full set of chain sprockets. This addition should have been included in the original quote, but because it was missed out, this was reflected in the lower repair quote. When the engine was stripped, you received the phone call informing you of this additional elevated cost. Overall, its not good as if you are a dealership, you have knowledge of this engine and fully understand what's involved and the total costs.
You tookk a chance on buying a car knowing it had a slight noise, Left it several years before fixing and then land a rather large bill. The timing chain and sprockets were knackered but at least it was fixed before a even more expensive timing chain broke. Lovely looking fleet of cars you have though I must admit.
I owned a 2015 Macan Diesel S for 4 years. One of reasons I decided to get rid is that the thought of a major wallet busting repair was always in the back of my mind. The transfer box failed on it with less than 30K miles on the clock which undermined my confidence in the brand and the main dealer customer service too. Then as the value of the car itself got to around the £15K mark, a 7K repair bill would be the last straw. So I decided it was as time to part company rather than risk it. The pressure to keep a Porsche in absolutely pristine condition is like no other as well and it just spoiled the ownership experience for me. I’d never buy another.
He didn't pay a Porsche price; he paid a USED Porsche price. There's a world of difference. He wasn't thinking clearly - either he allowed himself to pretend that was a new Porsche when clearly it wasn't OR the prospect of driving a Porsche was so irresistible he gritted his teeth and prayed he got lucky with a used performance car that hadn't been abused by the previous owner. Neither of those stood up to rational thinking.
I think the bigger moral of the story is to never buy a used Porsche that doesn't have a CPO warranty. Last year I purchased a CPO '22 Taycan CT 4S which has needed thousands in service; all at no cost to me. Love a Porsche that has a warranty :)
The bigger moral of the story is never buy a Taycan! Don't worry about the service costs, depreciation is brutal on those if you can even find a buyer at all.
Buying a used car is much like getting married. The unexpected surprises are down the track. You just need to accept nothing is perfect regardless of the selection process. The good thing with cars is you can keep replacing parts and making them better.
Retired mechanic with 40yrs experience...definitely was chain and sprockets ......injecters should be silent unless its a diesel engine.... Why was your chain worn simple service has been missed or wrong oil used at some point in past
I think I might have driven past you the other day potentially out on the Strines (not too far from Ladybower resevoir) ... I was in my Cayman S (981 grey - GTS front/rear)
I would not spent a penny ….straight off to we buy any car , servicing every 2 years also very bad idea, I oil change every 6 k miles and never had an issue
A lot of the items you listed are normal service items? San fairy anne. At least you are happy with it now. If you keep it at least another few years the cost will pale into insignificance.
I'm pretty sure I can speak for most people, vary similar circumstances have happened to us at some point and time. What it is is what it is. You pay, you learn and you move on. Asin your case, you make a RUclips video hoping it offsets the costs...lol.
Would have loved to know the mileage on the Macan GTS (and oil change intervals). Very disappointing and sad to know of possible premature wear on the timing chain and gears with this engine. Wonder if this is common with these engines?
OUCH.................. this is what absolutely terrifies me when considering getting a Cayman. I'm glad you got this nice car all sorted out. Any idea how/why the gears and chains "failed"?
Abnormal gear and chain wear is usually bc of infrequent oil changes. If the oil was not changed every 12k kilometres then it could have contributed or caused that
Audi has the sams problem on these cam variators they don’t have an oil supply!!! , you can come back at them because that problem was there at point of sale maybe not didn’t realize you have owned it for two years
I live in Dubai, and although not involved in the motor industry personally, I'm a big car guy with a few special cars & almost all my mates are. These macans are like a focus out there and it would amaze you how many companys just won't touch them anymore... 😢 So so so troublesome

Oh dear. Have a look at vag technics youtube channel. As the v6 in the macan is basically the same engine as the v6 in the audis, and the macan itself a Q5 there are some well documented issues with this engine. The cam followers are the other expense and could cause it to drop a valve... vag technic recommend a 70k interval to have the followers changed so might be the next job if you keep it.
The supplying dealer 'misdiagnosed' the problem, allowing you to drive the car only to cause more wear and damage, to a certain degree they owe you some sort of good will gesture payment, for them to misdiagnose a normal injection sound with a worn chain and sprockets is very poor indeed.
Hi mate, could I please ask you what was mileage the car had when the noise occurred as I’ve got a 2017 gts and sure I’ve got the same noise you experienced. I’m in Yorkshire and I’m sure you’re not far from me too.
I really appreciate your help I’ve also had it to a Stattler Porsche specialist in Sheffield and they too said it could be the direct injectors and the high pressure fuel pump. Funny thing is when I had it in to Porsche Sheffield for full service they were not sure what the noise was and want the car back to do further investigations.
If you had contemplated a Macan 12 years ago, chances are it would have been brand new off the Stuttgart factory. All the horror stories he's now living with would not visit upon you. I know; I had mine brand new. It was nothing but sublime pleasure for me every single day. It's an utter folly for people like him to buy used models of performance cars and pretend they were new.
Just bought a 2018 Macan S three months ago that only had 9k miles on it. Transfer case now needs replacing and it just made it under warrantee. A few more months it would have been out of warrantee.
Reliable but boring. I’ve had everything from Camrys to mr2 and actually required a lot of maintenance to keep them driving. Now in x3 m40i. Reliable and powerful.
We have a Diesel Macan and have the Porsche extended warranty it costs approximately £750 per year (if you delete the recovery provision) we have had a couple of issues fixed under the warranty in the last 4 years, when you take the warranty out the dealer will do a 100 plus point inspection, I wouldn’t buy a Porsche without the Porsche warranty, interestingly the warranty for the basically similar Audi Q5 is about double the cost.
Big mistake not getting Porsche OPC to do the inspection. Biggest mistake though was not testing a few examples, you had doubts and didn’t look at another car to compare
You paid top rate without doing full inspection and without warranty? I have been burnt too many times to buy car without any warranty or without carrying out full inspection !
You could go back to the dealer with the video evidence and the invoice and suggest the damage to the sprockets and other associated parts were a direct result of their negligence. Obviously they would not be liable for the whole bill as you have two years use, the pads and rear suspension for example. But the sprockets would almost certainly have not worn to the degree they had and would not have needed replacement if they had picked up the issue you were alerting them to? I would suggest you ask for a contribution to the repairs based on this evidence and suggest a claim in the small claims court would only cost a few pounds to put into action. You will be surprised how often that works, I have used it on more than a few occasions to get people to see sense👍👍
The dealer you bought it from put it in for a service, not an inspection. Sounds like the specialist didn't even look for the noise, because the dealer likely told them just to service it. Should've been a red flag that they put it in for an inspection at your request, but no inspection was carried out. Shame on the dealer.

You might check out the Porsche Club of America's recent video describing all three versions of the Macan. It's very informative.
You buy expensive cars, expect expensive running cost 🤷🏼♂️
A Lada is more reliable then a Porsche mate, an d that says a lot about the Porsche.
I would say you mis-sold. The people selling the car didn't know what was wrong but the Porsche engineer should have know or didn't inspect it properly.
Sorry to hear that, thank you for sharing
I new a Brit guy (ex Army), who had been based in Germany, and stayed on after his service finished. He became a used car salesman there. I asked him what car to buy, if reliability was my main concern. He said "Buy Japanese"!
The dealer who sold you the car, brushed off the issue. Its a Porsche you do no get banging noises from fuel injectors. Also you have paid £7000 of your own money to get the car sorted. They should be picking up some of the bill.
@@m3carlino914 not after 2 years
@@flytoday If you drove it less than 20k miles then they should at least split the bill in halve.
Absolutely correct.
Famous last words.. Happens to the best of us. .. The Zuffenhaus Specialist was the weak link.
@@michaelschneider- Porsche poor reliability is the weak link.
That noise that showed up on the test run would have been enough to send me running for the hills.Enjoyed the video thanks.

If you're in a hurry and you don't do your due diligence you haven't been scammed.
I get your point but if someone is deliberately trying to deceive you, just because I was in a hurry does not mean it wasn't scam.
2017... why didn't you put it back under Porsche warranty?
The to-this-day ever-popular 2.9tt V6 is an Audi design.
What a series of expensive phone calls! :(
Great shot of the random sheep!
I fully agree. .. The shop is slacking ..... Worn chain = worn gears. .. Oh, and while you're in there an H20 pump. .. Losers the shop.
Agree! Thanks for sharing.
Agreed... Good information, the post. .. 1. Don't purchase in haste, it will come back to haunt ya.
Pay a Porsche price but you get a volkswagen ...literally

True, I bought a VW, but I actually got a Porsche. I'm pretty happy. Most of the part numbers are literally identical :))
@@kindface HUh ??? He;s been driving Porsches for years

@@topmarques Too funny. !!
I agree why was the chain and sprokets worn/damaged in the first place.
I would say you were taken for a ride, a rather expensive ride
I'm glad you bought a Porsche so I don't have too,I still would though
I think I might have driven past you the other day potentially out on the Strines (not too far from Ladybower resevoir) ... I was in my Cayman S (981 grey - GTS front/rear)
I would not spent a penny ….straight off to we buy any car , servicing every 2 years also very bad idea, I oil change every 6 k miles and never had an issue
Your repair cost double my car costs but you have a nice car now I just have transport.
A lot of the items you listed are normal service items? San fairy anne. At least you are happy with it now. If you keep it at least another few years the cost will pale into insignificance.
True that.
I'm pretty sure I can speak for most people, vary similar circumstances have happened to us at some point and time. What it is is what it is. You pay, you learn and you move on. Asin your case, you make a RUclips video hoping it offsets the costs...lol.
So smart. . You can fool some of the people some of the time. But, you can't fool ..............................
Thanks for advice. I was considering a Porsche Macan but they are not without problems including the body work filling up with water!
Cayman has a completely different and bulletproof engine. Get a proper PPi and you'll be fine.
Abnormal gear and chain wear is usually bc of infrequent oil changes. If the oil was not changed every 12k kilometres then it could have contributed or caused that
@@atom999 Copy That. .. A proper PPI is a commandment.
"I paid more than i expected" said no Porsche owner leaving the Porsche dealer ever. 😆
Audi has the sams problem on these cam variators they don’t have an oil supply!!! , you can come back at them because that problem was there at point of sale maybe not didn’t realize you have owned it for two years
Greetings from Australia. I think you were scammed by the original dealer at Stratford. Great car and a great colour. Now it is sorted, enjoy it!
I live in Dubai, and although not involved in the motor industry personally, I'm a big car guy with a few special cars & almost all my mates are. These macans are like a focus out there and it would amaze you how many companys just won't touch them anymore... 😢 So so so troublesome
As a long time subscriber to your other channel & everything regarding Superyahcts is fantastic, but as an English man whos from leeds your knowledge on leeds isn't too good were in West Yorkshire not North. Bottom end of Holbeck round the corner literally from Elland Road & yes been from Leeds i support the club is a Huge Porsche Franchise JCT 600 its been in leeds certainly since the 80s. The Macan is the only SUV i would own. Bottom of my street someone has an 18 plate red Turbo Macan by far the most beautiful SUV . I can never afford 1 but as a Seat Leon Cupra owner i want which is probably the 2nd or joinet 1st best looking SUV a close of the Macan a Cupra Formentor 2.5 TS 5 pot .
I'd much rather get the Macan T than the old v6
That’s just the 17/18 year for the cam bearings isn’t it ? New design 2029 onwards
The supplying dealer 'misdiagnosed' the problem, allowing you to drive the car only to cause more wear and damage, to a certain degree they owe you some sort of good will gesture payment, for them to misdiagnose a normal injection sound with a worn chain and sprockets is very poor indeed.
agreed.
Hi mate, could I please ask you what was mileage the car had when the noise occurred as I’ve got a 2017 gts and sure I’ve got the same noise you experienced. I’m in Yorkshire and I’m sure you’re not far from me too.
63k miles
The Porsche specialist said it can happen on lower mileage as well.
My car is at 83k full Porsche history but I’ve only had it a few months. Did you try Porsche to see if they would repair it under good will?
No because it was out of their maintenance for a number of years before I bought it.
How many miles did your Porsche have on the clock ⌚?? Are the timing chain ⛓️ s scheduled for changing at for example 12000 miles ??
63k
Thanks for making me even happier that I walked away from a purchase 12 years ago.
I had all 911,‘s from the seventies, had a Cayenne but my simple 2.0T macan is the best travel car I own
Maybe that’s the move, get a 2.0 version. Less power but a more simple engine.

Is this why they call it a Poor-sh?

Big mistake not getting Porsche OPC to do the inspection. Biggest mistake though was not testing a few examples, you had doubts and didn’t look at another car to compare
Moral of the story don't buy modern german vehicles and not expected to get taken to the cleaners every time it’s with the mechanics 😂😂
Must be leggy if it’s done the sprockets. Inners looked ok.
Stay away from the long life service intervals. 10,000 mile oil changes is the way to go with these.

You paid top rate without doing full inspection and without warranty? I have been burnt too many times to buy car without any warranty or without carrying out full inspection !

Heheeee........ Brutal, that comment....... brutal.
I’m fully aware that these vehicles share stuff with other manufacturers. I’ve driven the Audi version is it drives completely differently.

I’m assuming it didn’t have a full service history …..and what was the mileage?
It's a hotted up SQ5 every day of the week
The moral of the story is buy a Toyota or Honda. Boring but run forever.
And I tried to reply to my own comment saying I meant it with the best will in the world ❤️
You could go back to the dealer with the video evidence and the invoice and suggest the damage to the sprockets and other associated parts were a direct result of their negligence.
Beautiful car, love that colour,
