- Some issues on a car can be VERY hard to find, and this 2019 Porsche Macan S has just one of those issues. So they installed the spacer, which the whole purpose of it is to make that blowoff sound, then complained when it did exactly what it was supposed to do…
I didn’t do a spacer because this exact reason. It sounds cool but isn’t worth some lag.

Yep, same here. Though I figured it had sprung a leak since the owner was surprised by the origins of the noise... I didnt account for the... "mechanical dyslexia".
Same. I grew up playing and tuning with all the turbo cars in the early 90s. Supras, 3000GTs, RX-7s, 300Zs, this noise was common and very well known, even desired. Three minutes in the video I was confused why this was such a mystery! lol

I was going to say the exact same things as you three guys. It's an instantly identifiable sound, and I know the Wizard, Grimes, and Daniel would have known this right away. It was done simply to add content, that's all.

It's possible the tuner installed it to make it sound better. I'd be questioning the tuner's job.

My first thought was there was a waste gate issue.

Mine too. Waste gate was the first thing that came to my mind.
Yeah. Fake waste gate noise was my first thought.
Vrooom, chu chu chu chu chu. A sound familiar to rally fans since the eighties or so.
The problem is this thing has nothing to do with the waste gate.
Waste gate is on the hot side (turbine side) of the turbo and is used to regulate boost pressure.
Turbo bypass valve - also known as blowoff valve and dump valve - is on the cold side (compressor side) and is used to counter pressure surge on the compressor when throttle plate is closed.
They are completely different things, and only the cold side valve has this characteristic sound. Wastegates only whistle like a kettle.
That imitation turbo whistle was spot on.
Actually talking to and listening to a customer for troubleshooting is actually one of the best things I've seen a mechanic do in a RUclips video... well done!
I hate that after giving a shop an exquisitely detailed description of a problem and how to reproduce it, the C/S line on the receipt just says something like "noise from left side of car".
The wizard showing us how NOT to use a grinder. No safety guard on the grinder, no safety glasses and no gloves.😂
1st thing I thought is "this sounds A LOT like a pop-of valve releasing pressure in the atmosfere". Like I was really used to hear back then with tuned Renault Supercinque turbo, Fiat Uno Turbo, Ford Fiesta Turbo, Lancia Delta integrale and so on :) Glad I was right :)
New intro is fantastic, Feels a lot more quicker (big plus!) & relevant to modern day Wizard! Still won't forget the banging OG theme song though. I hope it still gets used for the occasional car lift segment!

The point of a blow off valve is to keep the turbo spooled during shifts. When the throttle is closed, the boost air has nowhere to go, so it backs up against the throttle plate and the lack of forward movement causes the compressor wheel to stall, or churn air instead of move it. This slows the turbo very quickly. With a blow off valve, the boost air is simply vented to the atmosphere, so it continues to move and the turbo stays at high RPM, improving response after the shift.
The device installed on this car simply makes the venting audible, since the automaker designed the blow valve to be silent.
These actually work on non-turbo cars as well, but all they do is make a little noise.

I live in Maine. I'd say 50% of my mechanically inclined friends would have just smashed the core out of the catalytic converter and revved the engine up to blow out the chunks.
Also, I was sort of right in that it sounded like a turbo exhausting.

Outside of the environmental considerations, that also makes the car run worse and potentially be fatal to the owners. But you do you.

You have to wonder if that was the extent of the "tune". He probably paid a few hundred dollars for what is essentially playing cards and clothes pins on the spokes of a bicycle wheel.
Sounds like a turbo blow-off valve opening, the Mighty Car Mod guys love that sound!

@@user-sf7kl9uh7k Yeah, the original design just piped the pressure back into the intake, the part someone put on vented it to the engine bay. The took the vent out.
It's not a stock sound, otherwise that's sound is an aftermarket sound.
Sounds to me like the customer tried to take you for a ride Wizard. You passed his test however. Well done!!
Based on the fact that he got the car tuned and normies couldn't tell you what that is I suspect he was trying to catch the wizard and his techs off guard. Either way they realized what happened.

A BOV was going to be my guess but it wasn't offered as a choice. My original guess was followed by failing turbo, followed by vacuum leak. Nice to know I was right the first time! I've had many turbo cars so I know the sound!
When I first heard the noise, I thought to myself “some people pay to have that noise” then I was like noo.. sure enough I was right.
The whole time I was yelling blow off valve but then you gave us options and I started second guessing myself lol

@ 8:07 Daniel son stated that the car has been tuned. Which most likely means air to fuel ratio has been increased as well as boost. The extra boost might need to be evacuated more so you do not have compression surge in the turbo. Removing the blow off valve part is possibly causing turbo damage due to compression surge. Not only do you have to remove that blow off valve part. But the customer might have to put the vehicle back to factory specs.
Also adding a higher flow air filter on turbo vehicles will also most likely make that compression sound to some degree.

@@user-sf7kl9uh7k @347 is absolutely right these cars literally monitor air mixtures at very high resolution and can absolutely be affected it can be fixed in the tune but the car has to know whether or not to "count" that air and adjust for it. This isn't an old 4g63 or rb that doesn't care as much.
Recirc valve's job is to recirculate air so that the compressor doesn't surge. All the spacer does is make noise. Both with and without the spacer, the pressure is still diverted away from the compressor. So no this also would not affect the tune. When the valve is closed and you're under boost, the system works exactly the same.

You didn't even have to drive it for me to know what the customer was complaining about. As soon as you said "turbo noise after letting off" I knew EXACTLY what it was.

The craziest noise I ever heard was on an 80 Mazda RX7. It was carbureted and the charcoal canister was mounted to the inside of the air cleaner lid and a rubber hose was attached to it through the top of the air cleaner. That hose was kinked. This caused a sound just like a rubber chicken being squeezed. It was super random and very hard to duplicate. Took some time to find it.

Great engine right here, im currently looking into a 2014 Panamera with this same twin turbo V6 which is the replacement for the V8 on the “S” cars. This engine makes over 400hp and is a small V6 so plenty of space in the engine compartment for me to work on it.
My first thought was "but it sounds right", and it did
I guessed the blow off valve too. When the Audi/VW 1.8T engine came out they had a plastic blow off valve that broke after awhile and it then made a very similar noice. This was kind of funny that the customer installed the "fault" themselfs :)

My 996TT made a similar noise and it was the diverter valves. The Porsche part was very expensive, but a Mechanic over at Rennlist said they were the same part number as the one on the Audi TT at a fraction of the price....so we installed the Audi part and it worked fine
I knew a guy who had attached a turkey call to his Blow Off Valve... Hilarity ensued.
But that noise was a good noise in my opinion : )
The _instant_ I heard the little chirp on letting up on the throttle I knew it was the waste gate.
I knew what it was as soon as I heard the noise it's a blow off valve for the turbo and it really similar to a gfb one.
I definitely thought it was the turbo out of the list of options. The car seems so new I was baffled. I feel this customer just wanted a visit with the wizard 🤣🤷🏼♂️

Sometimes you need to modify the diverter valve/BOV with a tune, if the tune adds more boost and if the stockvalve isn’t adequate it could cause further issues

I have one on my turbo Mustang and i love the sound...
There are always tradeoffs when modding a car in factory form. Most mods will make the car actually worse, not better. Whether it will be noisier, harsher, use more fuel, etc. I learned this the hard way when I was young.
It takes taste, money and expertise to mod a car in a way that comes off better than it was.
Boost Recirculating Valve. Usually becomes louder if an aftermarket intake is installed or the turbo is going bad and you have excessive compressor surge.
I recognize that sound immediately; having watched lots of races were turbocharged engines are used
I have a Stage 1 tune on my 718 Cayman S, but I knew going in what that mod would do and that it would show in in diagnostics. ALWAYS let the shop know about mods. Including the dealer.

For someone who bashed Macans in a previous video you seemed to like this one. They score very high in Consumer Reports frequency of repair data. Ours has over 120k of trouble free miles.
At my depot we had a Scania CNG powered gas bus that made exactly the same noise when you closed the throttle, only the noise was much loader than that made by this Porsche.
Heh. Called it on the test drive. The classic "stu stu stu" compressor surge from the lack of a BOV or it's operation.

I've been there. Put a Forge 008 in fun turbo noise mode (stustustustu...pop) configuration on a 1.8t B5 Audi. Then immediately went on a road trip. Lost all boost, car was a complete dog.
It was tuned to 15-17 psi with a stock valve. Went to 4 psi with my brilliant modification.
As soon as I heard the sound, I knew exactly what the problem was.
Was puzzled that the blowoff noise was present, since all turbo cars blow off internally. The adapter revealed the cause. Here in Australia such an external blowoff is illegal. I have a snorkel on my turbo diesel Nissan Patrol and you can hear the blowoff through that, even though the blowoff is internal.
this is hilarious i knew right off the bat it was blow off sound but figured it was a failing one since customer was bringing it in 😂 guess not 😂

The noise is attributable to the classic 'aftermarket blow-off valve' - a valve that was installed by the 'youthful' turbo hot hatch owners of the 1990s and early 2000s. In these cases the owners loved to hear the 'whistle' when the car was decelerating - advising others that their car was turbo-charged.

Vacuum leak or blow off valve venting would be my pick.
The air filter is a telltale since it looks like an aftermarket filter and not an OEM.
Seems like the blow off valve thing was pretty much it. Some people thinks it's cool with that noise, others won't care for it. It probably cost the customer $50 too.

Funny you mentioned how easy the ecm is to access. I’ve NEVER had a bad one in 50 years of car ownership with all varieties of cars.

The sound almost sounds like something trying to start up with a specific cadence and sound. My bet is its the turbo after they were spun up and spinning free so to speak.
I'd be afraid to run that cutoff wheel with no guard. I've had wheels to come apart in the past while cutting at 10,000 RPMs.
Guard for wheel, shield for face! (I also wear goggles under the shield.)
Put the drill bit extender on the drill and use a small hole saw a little over an inch and drill right thru the cat, I did that on a 10 mks ecoboost and it turned out the cats were new but were still throwing codes because you need the Ford cats to fix it so I put the dummy o2's in
