Sometimes I think I'm the only one who considers this one of the best Bowie songs of all time. Happy to see I'm not alone.
This runs a close second to mine, which is Five Years.

this song was written about his half brother, terry. terry suffered from schizophrenia up until his suicide in 1985. he was an inspiration for many of david’s songs (all the madmen, aladdin sane, jump they say), each are quite heavy songs.
No it wasn’t. Bowie himself is said to have told producer Ken Scott that it was a track for the American market, because "the Americans always like to read things into things", even though the lyrics "make absolutely no sense".[2]
The other songs are about his half brother but not this one.

@@DanBlabbers there are several quotes regarding this piece and bowie was all over this place with this particular track! he described it to be personal, he also said that ‘bewlay’, along with being a name of a cigarette company, was a play on his stage name. i do know the quotes you’re regarding to, though. he left several of his songs up for interpretation, he’d switch stories about several, blackout for example.

It's about different things in different parts but 100% the dust running through their vains is obvious and starving for my gravy also obvious, they were the street terms of the day (70s) he could be dead he could not he could be you, Kings of oblivion, you had to be clever about how you put things back then and he was, Hunky Dory ,for me the best album he ever did, we've all got a favourite haven't we.
I've never met anyone who knows this song, I love, it's a treasure.

For me, Bowies masterpiece from the moment I laid the vinyl on my turntable and played Hunky Dory for the first time. Even though the words make no real sense I can still recite word for word to this day.I was lucky enough to go to the Tate in London when his costumes ect were on show and the high light for me was seeing his note books the workings for his lyrics written in pencil with scribblings and little drawings.I can't tell you how I felt standing there with just a thin sheet of glass between me and his precious notebooks.I was also lucky to see him perform at a festival and all I could think was " I'm in the same field as David Bowie !"

hiya pope ,,,,me tony darby,thanx so much for all your appreciation to all your reactions,,i think you may know that i absolutely love david bowie, simply not for what this great guy gave us,,His legacy ,,,,but something at times when many of us growing up in the sixties, seventies etc he was always there leaving us something to hang on to,SORRY ,BUT THATS MY OWN PERSONAL STUGGLE,,do you want to see something beautiful about this cracking guy,who ,when you look at all the seventies glam rock,alchohol and drug addiction,and endless parties etc,,,guess what,,he hated the whole fuckin lot,,,,he brought up his son ,,zowie bowie,who was then known as joe jones,and now known as the very successful film director ,duncan jones,,,,,search video of his absolutely beatiful wife ,Iman,doing video for Vogue,where she lets us into the home that David and her shared,and lets us know a kot more about this Icon,who i learnt way back in the 70s,,that he loved the quiet life ,far away from DAVID BOWIE,he always said that after any tour etc,,he longed to hang up Bowie outside his front door,and breathe,,,and live the life he yearned for,that most dear to his heart,,being who really was,,,David Jones,from London,,a guy who ,,,after so many struggles and other personal stuff,,became someone who did,good,,,check out Imans video ,yoou will love it,,,signing out,,Tony

We were so turned on in mind warp pavilion, which was the mid to late 60's, like so many others his brother fell out of the sun on to the rocks bellow and spent the rest of his life struggling with severe mental illness. That's a heavy truth telling song

Yes - his half brother Terry- older, introduced David to many things. The song meant enough to him that his music publishing was named after it.
It is a shame that no one ever asked Bowie about some of the very personal information on this song. Yes, it is about his brother and mental illness, but I would love to hear about some of the references..... This is one of the best obscure Bowie songs and he started singing it live later in his life. I think someone told him/reminded him what a gem it was.
Bowie did a compilation CD (iSelect) for the Mail On Sunday magazine in 2008. Notes for The Bewlay Bros will tell you why it was futile to inquire too deeply into lyrics:
"The only pipe I have ever smoked was a cheap Bewlay. It was a common item in the late '60s and for this song I used Bewlay as a cognomen - in place of my own. This wasn't just a song about brotherhood so I didn't want to misrepresent it by using my true name. Having said that, I wouldn't know how to interpret the lyric of this song other than suggesting that there are layers of ghosts within it. It's a palimpsest, then. The circumstances of the recording barely exist in my memory. It was late, I know that. I was on my own with my producer Ken Scott; the other musicians having gone for the night. Unlike the rest of the Hunky Dory album, which I had written before the studio had been booked, this song was an unwritten piece that I felt had to be recorded instantaneously. I had a whole wad of words that I had been writing all day. I had felt distanced and unsteady all evening, something settling in my mind. It's possible that I may have smoked something in my Bewlay pipe. I distinctly remember a sense of emotional invasion. I do believe that we finished the whole thing on that one night."
If you're going to check out another great Bowie song, I would recommend "Teenage Wildlife". This song is also a real revelation. 🤯
Great song from a great album -"Hunky Dory". As the other comments say, this is about his half-brother Terry, who introduced David to music, books, poetry, etc. "All The Madmen" and "Aladdin Sane" are worth checking out.

Hauntingly beautiful, love this Pope, never tire of it, for me his best album, though they are all good, especially Blackstar.
"The Bewlay Brothers" ends side two of Bowie's Hunky Dory album -- "Fill Your Heart", "Andy Warhol", "Song for Bob Dylan", "Queen Bitch", "The Bewlay Brothers". While others may have listened to side one more, featuring the hits "Changes" and "Life on Mars?", I listened to the second side more often for the guitar centered tunes "Andy Warhol" and "Queen Bitch". The tone of the fuzz on "Queen Bitch" is unmatched. "The Bewlay Brothers" was the song that would sneak up on you towards the end of the record. Bowie's final chorus slays "We were so Turned On \ In the Mind-Warp Pavilion..." The louder final chorus -- sung by a chorus -- served as a cue that it would soon be time to flip the record over and listen to side one or reset the arm and listen to side two again. Bob Dylan's influence on the lyrics is clear. The ramble on story telling that evokes Dylan, for comparison, predates by two years a similar style found in Bruce Springsteen's debut album "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.".

Bowie sang this many years later on a Radio 2 special (UK) by request, and he laughed at the enormously long lyrics. He clearly had a book of lyrics in his hand because as he introduced the song you could hear him turning the pages and joking about how the words just go on and on, but he said he would have a go even though he would have to read the words as he sang them as he hadn't sung the song for a long time. It came out great.
He lived and worked long enough to be able to look back and re-assess his older stuff, laughing at some of it and finding new value in some of it. He did say that this song was about himself and his brother, who had mental health problems, but he also said he was now as mystified as other people about some of the lyrics. Just enjoy the music.
This is an incredibly evocative song for me personally, because of the time I got to know it - I wouldn't want to make any pronouncements as to what the song is "about" though. I suspect that the lyrics don't *mean* anything, for all that there might be a passing reference to his half brother Terry. My guess is that a lot of drugs and cut-up technique were involved in the writing of this impenetrable masterpiece.
Bowies lyrics have always been 2 steps ahead of everyone and light years ahead if you dare to try ..., but this track tops that ability many fold. it's a trip. ''i mean 'Jesus'.... in the crutch hungry dark' the only guy who got close to this profound stuff was Morrison.
Also, on of the techniques he used for songwriting is that he would write un related sentences, a lot, or even copy then from books and poems. He would then cut them up in words and group of words or phrases and jumble them up, and would then rearrange them at random until a framework would appear and he would go on from there to tell the story it would inspire from him. That's a part of the reason why the lyrics are sometimes so dreamlike... or cryptic...
One of his songwriting techniques for the heroes album was David and Brian Eno would each go off and write down a statement they wanted to make in the song and not tell the other person what it was, then put the pieces of paper together and see what other subliminal piece of information came from it.
Fun fact: Did you ever see the sleeve of the Ziggy Stardust album? There’s a signboard with an interesting name on it. David Bowie was a true visionary😀!
This is that wonderful early 70s nostalgic Bowie era when his style first captured by heart. Bowie and a few others had an very interesting similar and unique style all of which were in some way often influenced by The Beatles yet this one has elements of Dylan as well.

This entire album (Hunky Dory) is great, definitely recommend Quicksand from that album. He also did an R&B album in the 90s - Black Tie White Noise, I highly recommend the title song. When you get a chance definitely check out his later albums...Reality, The Next Day and Blackstar. My favorite artist of all time, he had so many different styles

It’s a lament for the 60s, for being up all night high on LSD, and for the ones who never came back and remained lost inside their heads ~ comedian, chameleon, Corinthian, caricature, endless words spooling with no sense. One of his greatest songs.

I was lucky enough to see Bowie live and played this song,which is pretty obscure,and he always some obscure ones for his hardcore fans like myself,2003 at Jones Beach N.Y,his last tour,it was so amazing
happy new year dude,,,we have just been watching yours and others reactions over here in UK, forgot to say that when you hear all the amazing wierd and brilliant background vocals wether its the beweley brothers or any one of his tracks they are mostly he himself,just his raw natural talent or in the late 60s right through to sadly his finale black star,he would record himself backing then do several takes over dubbing his own vocals,and then again distorting his vocals digitally,,,,,this was very rare back then,,,by the way have you watched original video to,,Wild is the wind yet ,,,,,got to go now been told to get of this thing by my better half,,,,chill

I never understood what this song was about, but that could be said for a lot of songs and I really don’t cars. This is a great song from a fantastic artist. Great taste in music. I am a huge fan of David Bowie. You should do Life on Mars :) I cry every time I listen to that.
A "corinthian" is a person who is considered, mainly from a Christian perspective, to be morally depraved. A corinthian is hedonistic, lustful, epicurean (in the modern sense), etc. -- basically a corrupt sinner. The term comes, I'm pretty sure, from St. Paul's letters to the Corinthians in the New Testament; Corinth was more or less known as "sin city" or something like that, not sure if they used a term/phrase about it. As far as Bowie's use goes, I personally have NO doubts that he's using it in a positive sense, with an inflection of rebelliousness/living on the fringe/going against the cultural mainstream with all its bullshit.
