The great Mick Ronson on lead guitar and backing vocals. Not just an accomplished and innovative guitarist, but a great arranger and producer in his own right.

The riff of this song is based on one of Bowie's favorite groups, the Velvet Underground. The name of their song is "Sweet Jane". Bowie scrawled on the back of his album "Hunky Dory",....Queen Bitch-"Some VU, white light returned with thanks". A reference to the Velvet Underground's song "White Light, White Heat".

I went to 3 live concerts of his and they were all amazing. 😊 He remains my all time favorite singer....He also was able to play 14 instruments! Please react to Wild Is The Wind, I Would Be Your Slave, and We Are The Dead (just some of his amazing songs).

Just last night, my Dad and me were talking about Bowie!. Thus song was a lot alike much of his other material of that period. That helped his albums flow so well. Love his blue 12 string, and, like you pointed out, his boots, (daisy roots) that didn't match the rest of his costume, but somehow complimented the whole look. Likeable song, if only for it's tune, like you I missed a lot of the lyrics. (Not paying attention... LOL) I'm really glad you're getting a taste for David and his music. He was very much an acquired taste for the bigger part of the population. It was very late into his success that he grew on me. But a great deal of his earlier stuff hold a lot of important memories, I didn't appreciate is art for years after those days.
Enjoyed the reaction, as usual. Be well TTFN.

It's said that the song is dedicated to Lou Reed. Who knows?

I'd only just been born when this came out, but I have seen this performance several times. Plus I absolutely used to love The Old Grey Whistle Test. I believe it ran between 1971 - 1987 and has notched up a ton of memorable performaces to it's name. The performances were often longer and a lot more raw than could be seen on typical UK pop programmes at the time. Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd on this show for instance goes on for something like 17 minutes and is outstanding! I think some of it was live and some of it wasn't but I'm sure someone more informed can expand on that. Thanks for a great reaction.

I've spent a life time working out what they were talking about - still always loved it, still don't really understand, I read somewhere he was talking about Lou reed? maybe?

I seem to remember this being on the B side of gene genie (don't know if I spelt that right). I was about 9 - 10 at the time and couldn't understand what Bowie was about but loved some of his stuff. I've since learned to appreciate his genius now that I'm 60. I live in Aylesbury and there's a memorial statue of Bowie that plays some of his hits. It was put there because his first performance of his Ziggy Stardust personer was at a pub almost opposite the statue. The UK is so far ahead of any nation for producing amazing bands and artists it's almost embarrassing. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

Being an adult sucks. I wanna go back to being a teenager watching the likes of Bowie et al in TOGWT studios. Queen Be-atch was an excellent choice.

"She's so swishy in her satin and tat / In her frock coat and bippity boppity hat" The whole Hunky Dory album is so diverse.....so many different styles within that album. Bowie in his early creative mode is so cool.

google what "swishy" meant in 70s slang - and see something else about this song.

Fantastic!!! Or should I say, Fabulous!!! LOL. I was introduced to Bowie in the late 70s when my much older half brother started taping Bowie albums for me from his collection. I actually memorized just about all of the lyrics to his first few albums haha. In any case, if you hadn't picked up on it, this is a paen to the drag scene he enountered in New York. Bowie was one of the first to flirt with gay culture as part of the whole glam rock scene which exploded around that time.
His bandmates were not into that scene at all being working-class lads, but they were talked into it when told they would attract more women as part of the glam-rock thing; and Bowie was right hehe.

Apparently, QB = Lou Reed, of Velvet Underground, not a woman at all! To make a song like that, with its theme of gender fluidity and ambiguous sexuality, was a brave thing to do in the early 1970s. Or now. Bowie went on to work on Reed's Transformer album, which went a lot further down that road.
