Great video! I have a 240gb ssd and when you say first thing to do is format the drive, is partitioning the drive formatting it? I thought it needed to be formatted to FAT32, but the drive is too large for FAT32, or is it exFAT? I just need to be sure it's formatted correctly and that is done by partitioning the way you sat in the video. So brand new out of the box, I do what you say takes care of the formatting needed.
Hey Tech Doctor... great concept & video. Would this apply to F TV Cube 2nd gens also? 1) Will I see great speed increases on the Cube 2nd gen as well? I am not complaining... just wondering 2) if there even is any way to be able to show ssd > firestick > ethernet (upload to network storage) speeds OR the same path (as a download) OR same paths but wireless OR firestick to SSD speeds. Your vid only showed speed increase from DESKTOP to SSD (not firestick). 3) How much faster would it be (I would be happy with just educated guesses) to xfer data on the #2 paths I listed above. Just asking because I don't want to invest $, time, and energy into an SSD set up if I will not see any speed advantage (probably the worst might be through the micro port attached to ethernet)? Please advise.

Fantastic as usual Doc!! Are we locked in to the Sandisk portable SSD or can I use a different brand portable SSD with say 128 Gigs?? Just want to dedicate the entire SSD and save a little cash, but don’t want to screw this up by buying a cheaper one that won’t work.

While the SSD performs much better than a USB flash drive, in actual use, is the difference noticeable?
@MikeWisj1 See Amazon reviews comparing with manufacturer’s claimed performance. They state: “Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on drive capacity, host device, OS and application.”
One issue if you try to use it as formatted is “out of the box, the drive is formatted with exFAT and an allocation size of 1 MB.“ according to an Amazon reviewer; the OEM website only claims compatibility with Windows and MacOS.
If you were to use it for backups any file smaller than 1MB defaults to occupying the allocation size. The same reviewer suggested the file allocation size of 128KB specified by Microsoft is conservative for exFAT drives and 32KB is OK.
The reviewer was satisfied with speed claims using modified exFAT. Others commented that smaller file allocation sizes slow the transfer speeds. exFAT is a proprietary Microsoft format, which is used under license. It is known for excellent performance with big files not so much with small files. Both exFAT and NTFS overcome the 4 GB file size limit.
Reviews on Amazon show the SSD performs well when reformatted in NTFS (as used with Windows systems). ES Explorer can mount NTFS “SD Cards”, so it would be good for large file sizes >4GB (unlike FAT32) and compatible between Android and Windows.
If this SanDisk 250GB Extreme Portable External SSD - Up to 550MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.1 - SDSSDE60-250G-G25 is too slow, you could try a faster product like the SanDisk 500GB Extreme PRO Portable External SSD - Up to 1050MB/s - USB-C, USB 3.1 - SDSSDE80-500G-A25
Reviews show the Pro model runs cooler than the former model and in any case speed may be reduced to reduce temperature so the lower the temperature the better. Writing large files is a cause of heating with SSD’s.
The latter is possibly an upgrade for a USB3.1 gen 2 device but probably not for the FireTV series devices since they are limited by the USB 2 port to 480Mbps.
Caveat emptor applies to SSD portables. See the reviews for situations which cause failures. The prevailing opinion seems to be reformat and avoid Sandisk security features. Beware quality issues even fakes. If in doubt buy direct from manufacturer. Don’t expect great customer service.

I have one question? is there a command that you can use to have an app to be installed only in the Internal storage! for Example "Tivimate IPTV app" in recent update you can only install it on an Internal storage if I move it to extanal storage, it won't work! this is goes for FireTV and Nvidia shield too.
Not on the Firestick. I did hear that tivimate has issues if you try and move it to USB so might be better to leave it
@Big E @TechdoctorUK the work round to ensure an apk is installed on internal storage is to shutdown the device, unplug the external storage, restart the device and install the apk.
Then shutdown, plug in the external storage and restart.

My ssd drive has data on it. Can I use this without formatting, or do I need a clean ssd drive to use with fire stick? My ssd drive is 1 terrabyte and it has available 250 gigabyte. I want to use the 250 gigabyte available with firestick if it's doable. Also, I have a lot of movies in this drive that I want to see using firestick. What are my chances?

Hey mate another great video, another way of finding package names , if you do a scan using virus total it also lists the package names of any apks you have installed.
That is correct. You can also do this on X-plore (it shows the package names) Also the Total Commander tells you the whole package names)

I have two of the 2020 new firesticks and have been trying to solve the problem of low memory space for the longest time. I purchased a Sandisk Extreme 1 tb external Drive. I followed your video; but when I formatted the drive with the ADB shell for 80% external and I go to settings it doesn't show an external drive. Plus both of my Firesticks will for no apparent reason reboot itself. I am just about at my wits end; I need help.
I have a FireTV 2nd Gen. This is a metal square box. On the back it has a SDcard slot and a USB card slot. I have moved apps to the SDcard it doesn't make that much of a difference with how much internal storage space I have. 90% of my apps have been moved to the SD card and I still show around 700 Megs of free storage. I would like to increase my internal storage with the use of external storage so I don't get the low on storage message popping up. Is there a simple way to utilize the USB port or SDcard slot to store and use apps without it also using up some of the internal storage space. Thanks,.

I have a new 4K Fire TV stick, OS 7.2.2.8. I tried the above, but the downloaded apps won’t launch. I downloaded the Troypoint app from downloaded and it shows it’s on the external drive , but when I try to launch it, it shows the Troypoint image then fails to open and reverts back to the app. I moved it to internal storage and it still wouldn’t open. What am I doing wrong?
I notice that the link you are supplying here is for the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. But in the video you call it the SanDisk Extreme PRO Portable SSD. I shopped for both of them and I see there definitely is a difference between the two. Is there going to be a big difference in speed?

You are correct, I incorrectly said Pro. You won't notice the difference in speed on Android box / Shield. However if you use this on a PC then the Pro would be faster.

Is there any bottleneck with the usb port of the firestick that would make that type of ssd too fast and maybe a slower one would be as good and cheaper?

Hey TechDoctor, I used the Remote ADB Shell sofware, and split my SSD to an 80/20 storage space. When I go into X-Plore or ES File Manager, I see the space for my SSD. But, on the internal space for my Firestick, it only shows 5.3GB. Why isn't my allocated SSD space showing for use on Firestick ? Thanks in advance
The internal storage is encrypted and cant be seen by 3rd party apps.

I have Kodi on my small external USB and its works fast. Using LAN based media files and SMB connection to laptop storage.
Just tried this and I can't get it to format. I get this error - error:java.lang.Illegal State Exception:command'16 volume partition disk:8,0 mixed 95' failed with '400 16 command failed'. I'm using a WD SATA SSD plugged into a UGreen ethernet adapter hub. The cable between the SSD and the hub is a USB to SATA adapter cable. Not sure if that is the problem??
Hi TechDoctorUK i followed your video last night done everything the same tried privaye then 80% it all came up the same as yours on dev2 column all was good no errors.
Ithen tried the same apps as you did ip tools did not have the tick, so i tried virus total, master cleaner from filelinked again no tick to say it went to external storage, i am confused any help would be grateful.

Let me start by saying i have a 4k stick and 3.0 drive plugged in, right i just tried moving virustotal on its own by copy and paste it went in its on the usb yaay, but why will they not just go in through downloader or filelinked hmm......
I’m having an issue where it’s creating the partition for the external storage but not for the internal.. I am doing an 80/20 split on a 1TB Samsung SSD connected via the OTG cable to my Fire TV Cube 2nd Gen. Does anyone have an idea as to what the issue is??
TechDoctorUK I have done the tutorial and successfully move all apps to the SSD and disable all Amazon processes. but I still from time to time have to clean memory from internal from various cache files. etc.... Can you make a tutorial where you use the SSD as Internal with root access. since SSD is now faster the stick will not be slow. Thank you.

If you haven’t set up an OTG USB expansion yet, you’ll find that FireOS7 handles Thumbdrives explicitly, allowing the management of apk’s installed there (there’s a menu item to move an external apk to internal storage), and data capacity consumed. There’s even an Eject Thumbdrive safely menu item.
I’m interested in his reply since I have a Cube and it is performing well on his suggested mods for 2020. The only one I haven’t bothered with is the Debloat Tool.
My suggestion would be get a 128GB thumb drive, partition it for data and system apk installation. To handle the fast transfer of your collection of DVD’s etc also get a USB hard disk or SSD like this one. That will plug in on a multi USB adaptor. My experience of an NTFS hard drive is an old version of ES File Explorer mounts this drive (the FireOS7 menus don’t cover it).
This arrangement provides flexibility while freeing Cube storage to keep typically 4GB free even with nearly 60 apk’s installed.

its still limited by the usb2.0 hubs port and firestick port? this might work faster on the shield since its usb3.0 ports!
and unless u can get an ssd for dirt cheap the added benefit isnt worth the cost over a standard cheap usb but from what ive read 3.0 works better for compatibility reasons troypoint recommends sandisc
even an ssd on the shield doesnt run that much faster on the shield but of course 200 gigs smashes the storage space on the 2019 models

Using the amazon official LAN adapter ? , if so that micro usb on it is only for power when using it on a firestick not data , you need to get a sifferent usb adapter with a built in LAN port , the Ugreen one is the best for this

@geordie I fully debloated my FireTVStick4K except com.android.documentsui (found necessary for Advanced Downloads Manager to see the “SD Card”) after installing external storage on an OTG cable and both the apk’s on the system partition and the data in the data side both continued to work.

Possibly I’m not seeing links to things you mentioned in the video. I cannot find something called fire tv app - I’m assuming it allows you to have a cursor ? I’ve looked for this app everywhere and cannot find it - anyone have a link to it or have an all that allows me to have a cursor so I can select abd copy ?
It's an app for your phone from the play store for android. Not sure about iPhone though.

It's app specific. Some apps will and other apps wont.
Sorry for the questio, Indidn't ubderstand if the ssd is actually faster usb key and what if I install an app on ssd/key and start the sd and I start the application it give e an error or if I jist won't se the app on the the firestick...😔

I have a Samsung t5 ssd want to put my movies on it from my computer but when I put movies on my ssd then plug it in to my nvida shield it wants me to format it and that will erase all my movies need some help on this issue I hate that u have to format first is there anyway around this
Can you just press cancel on that message? There is no reason why you can't just plug in a USB drive in to the Shield and access the content on it.

Or you could just buy a buzztv st4000 vidstick which comes with 2gb ram and 16gb storage and android 9. Firesticks are shit unless you have a 2nd gen modded with lineage OS.. Have you managed that mod @techdoctorUK
Buzztv stick is running unofficial Android, so no Netflix / Prime in HD

@@rabmccoll3994 dont know who this “most people” is, but if a movie/series is on Prime or Netflix, then i default to those apps for quality and reliability, regardless of all the other apps i have installed.
Cant tell you haw much this is worth doing , recetly did this on nvidia shield & wow !! , see these "USB 3" drives may well have a USB 3 interface sure but the flash memory inside them comes nowhere near as fast as a cheap SSDs nand speed this is where they catch you , you think your getting USB3 speeds but in truth all your getting is a USB3 interface with flash memory wich can come nowhere near 5Gbs throughput. Even an old tired SSD will give a read speed of around 4Gbps & a write of 2 or 3 Gbps , something modern will give around 5Gbps both ways , whereas these thumb drives youll be lucky to get 1.5Gbps read & a lot lower write , sure there are some USB3 thumb drives that will infact give you very fast USB3 speeds but they will cost you much more money than an SSD will !! , was an easy upgrade for me as i already had a USB 3 HDD dock spare so i just bought a Western digital SSD for only £50 (250GB) & put it in the dock (USB 3 HDD docks can come very cheap) , things were istantly miles faster & more stable , lots of apps that were crashing no longer do & everything loads faster & chaches faster (shield that is as with firestick apps still cache to internal storage) , this is th best upgrade you can do with your device.
Just to clarify - the fire tv remote app for the iPhone does not have a cursor or the ability to paste - so I’m not sure what other app is being discussed.
you dont need a cursor to paste. Just bring up the virtual keyboard on the screen, then go to your phone app, click on the keyboard icon. You can then press and hold the line (where you would be typing) on the app and select paste. That will paste any text you have copied on your phone to your firestick
TechDoctorUK no - cannot get close to what you are describing - I cannot move to ANY line of txt generated by the commands . I can get it to scroll up and down and only am able to highlight the input line at bottom of screen where the commands go. I cannot move to the text to copy the line after expand/ fir instance - the iPhone firestick remote app has a virtual keyboard that does nothing as I cannot move anything to any line to select any text . Btw it does not copy and paste even if I could select something . I tried to paste something in another program and it said some of the features are disabled or something similar .
joe holiday I agree the iPhone FireTV app is lacking the paste feature. I have reported it every few months.
Meanwhile, I found a Rii i4 (2019 update) keyboard provided a mouse cursor to allow selecting the text, the Copy menu item and CTRL V paste functionality in the Remote ADB Shell command entry line.
I have now figured out how to get the cursor to select txt. That was the problem - copy and paste works the sane for any txt processor / now the problem
Is the keyboard isn’t mapped correctly for instance the m is the ; snd about 6 other keys do not type correctly . Must be a windows setting on the keyboard fir android . I cannot find out what it is

I have s 7-port hub, 128 and 512 gig flashes plugged in, but abd and ES would not download properly. The same files show on the flash (it copied everyrhing on the firestick), but the firestick doesn't seem to link to them. I want to reset the firesrick to factory to free the 4 gig firestick, but I don't want to loose everything. How about some help.

I also found from another RUclipsr that a Gen 2 cannot be completely used this way.
