- Hello and welcome to the mightily impressive castle of Pierrefonds. Though destroyed in the 17th century, it was given a total makeover in the 18th by none other than our good friend Eugène Viollet-le-Duc! He not only restored but also reimagined the castle. What remains is an impressive looking medieval fortress with a fantasy 19th century Romantic twist! Certainly worth a visit for any castle and Medieval enthusiast. Thanks for watching!

Been there but don't remember much of it except that it was huge and pretty. The big gargoyle/crocodile spewer drain thingie was my favourite thing, but then I was just a kid XD.
There's loads of cool stuff to see, but the crocodile drains are certainly memorable! If you can you should visit it again someday 😁. Thanks for your comment!

What we see today is an evolution and life over time of these magnificent buildings. Sometimes development is arrested and we are left with a shell or a ruin of a great medieval fortress. Sometimes they have been occupied for longer and successive generations leave their mark, modernising as the centuries pass. On occasion ruins have been restored in accordance with taste at the time. All of these contribute to the amazing variety of interest that exists, particularly in Europe. I have not been to Pierrefonds but I may ewell include it on a trip soon.

Amazing video you guys! The details that you pointed out, even if it was by way of just pointing your camera that direction, even if you didnt say anything was cool, for people who pause videos for details, that stuff is important. I really love the way you filmed the ceiling in the "the lords chamber", slowing panning up and then halfway turning the way you did so the full ceiling and all of its details are able to be seen! Beautiful shot!
Too many videos focus on the things that dont seem to matter in buildings like that.....whatever contemporary decorations the current owners put up, the gardens, almost always something in there that makes me think, "ok, but you are missing so much of the amazing detail by focusing on this stuff that doesnt matter"....I didnt feel that way at all with this video. I dont think I could have made a video suited for me if I had tried to do this myself.
And the way that you stood outside the castle while talking was pretty awesome too, because pictures without reference give one idea of size.....seeing you in front of those awesome defensive walls in front of the castle really put its size into perspective. Great work!

Spectacular and grand, each room is the size of one large modern house. The architecture, masonry, and millwork is incredible. To consider the work that went into gathering, transporting, and fashioning the materials, and then building that castle is staggering.

Wow thank you for sharing your trip with us, one day I'd love to visit these places but I live in the U.S. so it's a bit of a trek. There seem to be many glass windows which would be kind of an issue in a siege. Are those part of the fanciful elements you mentioned or are they only facing inwards to the courtyard?
Hey thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing! 🔥 The windows are indeed facing the courtyard, so in the event of a siege probably wouldn't pose much of an issue. That being said it must be noted that of course the castle was not only restored, but also altered in some places. Can't tell you with 100% certainty wether these were added in the 19th century though 😅. We hope you may visit it yourself one day, but until then we hope to cater to your castle exploring needs 👍🏰

No, the castle was (thankfully) not damaged during either world wars, despite being fairly close to the front in WW I. Thanks for commenting 👌👍
The medieval chateau de Coucy in northern France, which boasted the tallest dungeon in the country, was submitted to heavy German
artillery shooting in WW1, which caused the total loss of the dungeon.
@@francoisleyrat8659 indeed, the keep was sadly destroyed and reduced to a pile of rubble, later called a memorial to barbarity. It's lovely but it's really more of a palace than a castle now.
Yeah, we're still more in love with ruins than these sorts of palaces, but we had to admit it was a great experience seeing it 😄
Sorry, you say early on that you dislike the faux medieval of the castles of the Loire, then go on to praise this "restoration" of this castle in the 18th century. It is undoubtedly magnificent, but it's nothing like an "original" medieval castle.
I am full of contradictions, I'm afraid. 😅 All I meant to say is that I most enjoy the genuine old Medieval castles and castle ruins. I like the robustness and military aspect of them. The later palace castles are more like lavish mansions and lost a lot of that robust military flavour. Pierrefonds has been restored in the 19th century as a robust military castle on the outside, but a lavish palace on the inside. I guess the combination of the two made me fall in love! 👍 Thanks for watching and commenting! ❤️
@@TheHistoryHikers Well, the châteayx of the Loire valley are not "faux" medieval. First, it depends on what castels you are speaking about. Chinon, Angers, were fortresses, for military purpose. Chenonceau, Azay-le-Rideau, Amboise, etc, are late medieval era (XV° century), with some elements from the Renaissance in addition, later. So you probably prefer the XII°, XIII° and XIV° centuries châteaux. Well, if ever you go back to France, try to visit Guédelon, in Bourgogne : I really think it could interest you. You even can find videos about it on RUclips.
