Welcome to The History Hikers. We're two nerdy historians who love history, the Middle Ages in particular. If you do too, this channel is for you!
On our hikes we visit castles, abbeys, old towns and a lot of other interesting places. We decided to take a camera along to share these amazing and sometimes forgotten places with other history aficionados. We try to provide information about these locations to give you a better understanding of their unique history. We upload whenever we can on Sunday at 17:00 CET.
So, put on your hiking boots and tag along with our hikes through history!

Completing The Triple Crown of Catalan Cistercian Abbeys | Santes Creus
Welcome to our final video from beautiful Catalonia. In this one we’ll be taking you on a visit to the abbey of Santes Creus. It’s the last of the big three Cistercian abbeys here in Catalonia and definitely not the least. Its Gothic decorations are marvellous and the history seeped into the walls is visible in every stone. The abbey’s history is rich and tells the tale of an important monastery, especially after it housed the royal pantheon. With its high profile it also gained a lot of meddling from the royals as well, which may be seen as its downfall. Thanks so much for watching and we’ll see you in some other part of Europe real soon!

Просмотров 168День назад
You join us for our last history hike in Catalonia, a hike which takes us to the highest point on the Cap de Creus peninsula. You will be amazed by the Romanesque magnificence of the abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes, awestruck by the impressiveness of the castle of Verdere and humbled by the picturesqueness of the village of Santa Creu de Rodes. In between we’ll show you what hiking here is truly li...
The History of this Castle is One Big Tug of War! | Castle of Verdera
Просмотров 24214 дней назад
High above the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes stands another historical gem: the castle of Verdera. From the keep the panorama stretches across the Bay of Roses and is an excellent viewpoint to spot oncoming assailants. Its history is a tale of strife between heaven and earth, or rather between abbots and counts. They acted out a tug of war over the centuries until the castle was abandoned and...
This Abbey Unifies Heaven and Earth in One Facade! | Abbey of Sant Pere de Rodes
Просмотров 36621 день назад
Welcome back to Catalonia. The Rodes massif is a mountain that juts out from the Iberian peninsula. On it some 9th century monks decided to build one of the best examples of Catalan Romanesque art. It is the Sant Pere de Rodes Monastery. Follow us on a journey through its history as we take you through the complex. On the way you’ll discover why the abbey has two cloisters built on top of each ...
This Castle Proves That People Still Care About History | Castle of Garraf
Просмотров 163Месяц назад
Time for another seaside castle. The castle of Garraf dates to the 12th century and was built to fend off pirates. It would remain in use until the 16th century. A short but arduous journey takes us into the hills and to the castle. Sadly it is sandwiched between two modern monstrosities: a quarry and a highway. The noise they give off is quite off putting, because the castle itself, albeit sma...
This Castle Once Cost 120.000 Coins, What Would It Be Worth Today? | Castle of Eramprunya
Просмотров 162Месяц назад
Another one of those majestic red sandstone castles. And another church greets us as we set off on our hike. One adventurous hike later we reach what used to be the castle town, though not much remains. The perimeter wall is still present in places as well as fragments of houses. What is very much still visible is the chapel. This grand Romanesque building has stood the test of time, with a lit...
The Castle of Cervello Just Couldn't Stop Annoying the Aragonese King
Просмотров 2442 месяца назад
Welcome to Alsace! Uuuh, we mean Catalonia of course! But you would be excused for believing that if you saw any of the castles we featured when visiting that famous region in France. The castle of Cervello is also built out of the similar red hued sandstone, which is absolutely stunning. Next to it is also a church made out of the same stone, red like a warm fire. The castle itself is perched ...
A Huge Medieval Castle That Was Never Completed! | Castell de Montgri
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.2 месяца назад
This castle is quite high up, time for a good hike! The castle of Montgri was built in the 13th century to defend against the unruly vassal of Empuries. As you might be able to deduce while looking at the video, the castle was never finished. Once the struggles with the vassal were at an end, the castle was no longer needed and its construction was abandoned. We’re left with an impressive shell...
Two Ancient City Ruins For The Price of One | The Greek & Roman Cities of Empuries
Просмотров 2802 месяца назад
Welcome to a magnificent ancient site. These are the remains of not just a Roman city, but also a Greek city. Emporion was founded some 2500 years ago, a typical Greek colony as there were so many in the Mediterranean world. Inevitably the Romans turned up. They turned one city into two, by building their own typical chess-board grid city next to it. And so for 400 or so years the city (or citi...
The Most Beautiful Monastery We Have Ever Seen | Abbey of Poblet
Просмотров 3712 месяца назад
This must be one of the most beautiful monasteries or abbeys in the world. The abbey of Poblet is home to some true wonders. From the cloister to the chapter house and of course the abbey church, not an inch isn’t filled with marvellous beauty. The abbey also houses some splendid Gothic treasure in the form of several royal tombs and an amazing altar piece. Not just that it’s also home to some ...
A Tight Community Lived Inside This Iberian Fortress | Fortress of Vilars
Просмотров 2533 месяца назад
Welcome to the Fortalesa dels Vilars. It is a fortress constructed by the Iberian Ilergetians and was home to 200 people for over 400 years. Through these centuries the fortress saw significant changes and alterations and became almost as heavily protected as the many castles we visit. Inside a tight community lived who shared many things like ovens, mills and the well. This is an eye opener if...
Castle Turned Town, Town Turned Ruin | Castle of Mont-Ros
Просмотров 4423 месяца назад
Not far from the little town of Portell where we were staying was a supposed castle ruin. We just had to go and check it out, whatever it was. In the end we weren’t sure what we found. It looked part castle, part town. Guess what, it is exactly that. The tower is what remains of the medieval castle, once constructed to defend against Islamic invaders. The town is what remains of the settlement ...
A Perfect Harmony of Romanesque and Gothic Architecture | Vallbona Abbey

It has been so long since we visited another abbey. Luckily Catalonia has a few remarkable ones. We start out here at Vallbona de les Monges. The abbey was founded in the 12th and a monastic community of nuns have been living here for over 800 years. Some of the best features in the abbey are its diverse decorations ranging across different architectural styles. The Romanesque wing of the clois...
Two Unknown Medieval Catalan Gems at Sunset | Castell de Besora and Church of Santa Maria

Close to our previous stop, the castle of Oris, we encountered yet another magnificent rocky plateau with yet another ruin on top. This time we’re in Santa Maria de Besora. The sun was already setting, so we had to hurry up and climb the hill to explore this mysterious ruin. When we reached the top we already knew this was a special place. Views stretching for miles and miles and two magnificen...
This Must Be One of The Best Places for a Castle! | Castell d'Oris

During one of our excursions we noticed an immense rocky plateau with what seemed to be ruins on top. If this was a castle, we just had to go and explore. Research showed it was the castle of Oris, built to defend against the Saracens in Catalonia. Though fenced off to prevent unwanted visitors, we were still able to see this castle and learn more about its history and architecture. Bringing th...

I enjoyed it do much!❤
Awesome! ❤️
Amazing place
Yes, we loved it!
Amazing as always! 😍
Thanks!
I used to wonder how the church managed to recruit monks. I no longer wonder. These abbeys must have been incredible refuges from the brutality of life in those times. Thanks so much!
All the rules that were imposed on the monks like not being allowed to speak sound a bit annoying though 😅
It is still a very beautiful, peaceful place. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. Keep on!
Thank you!
Another great video. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks for watching 👍
I saw a black cat or dog was also curious about the Cistercian dormitory. Thank you for the videos. It brings me joy to see beautiful buildings of bygone times when I cannot visit them.
Yes, there was a black cat there, hopefully no bad luck! Thanks for watching 👍
Good YT stuff, which is good for you and for posterity
The RUclips Gods approve
Love exploring places like this
That makes two (or three) of us!
Impressive, thank you for sharing your visit to this seemingly intriguing place!
Our pleasure ❤️

Thanks, good to know. Looks like André Czeski and Fernand Niel are two experts 👍
@@TheHistoryHikers You are right.
That was quite the hike. Great video.
Thank you!
👍👍👍 ... but I've counted over 8 GoPros that you left there as you were walking and passing by
Somehow people keep dropping their GoPro's...
The location is simply breathtaking. At the end section of the video, it looks like you had the town/church all to yourselves with no other visitors, there must have been no sound but the wind. This area seems to have it all!
That sounds about right yes, a plus to going on holiday in November: very few other tourists. It was heaven
Wow! You guys must be super fit to make all these amazing hikes! Another amazing video! Thank you for sharing! 💜🌏🦘
Well, super fit might be going too far. We're glad we are healthy enough to be able to do these hikes. However we don't do these on a daily basis of course haha
@@TheHistoryHikers fitter than I am haha
Hi-ya Mr. and Mrs. Hikers, Sending my standing ovation. Bravo! After strenuous hike, now I take advantage of and enjoy the well-kept ruins. In addition, the views of coastlines are delightful that took my breath away. Your selection of music paired with your footage is superb! Thank you for sharing such rich heritage. I am currently evacuating from the natural disaster as you may see in the latest and now I am facing antoher hurricane to prepare for. Congratulations to both of you on surpassing 1.5K. I am proud of you. Stay warm
Hi, thanks for watching. Hope you and your loved ones are safe out there. Nasty things we see on the news. Take care.
Magnifique video, un régal pour les yeux! Merci pour ce beau trajet! Bonne continuation !
Un grand merci!
Nice hike. Great place. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thank you, have a great week!
Doing the YT stuff for you
You're too kind 😁
What a special and unique place guys! Breathtaking scenery and simply enjoyable film!
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it 😊
Yep, a 10 from me too !
Ah Puilaurens, one of our faves! Great!
I think it's an 8 - mainly for the view, because it lacks interesting details in the castle itself. I think Jente said that too! We are in total agreement 😁
Mindsync!
Very nice
Thanks!
Gorgeous views but that wind looks deadly!! Thank you for taking us with you!
Thanks for following along!
Nice place. Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks!
This hike looked pretty hardcore. European safety regulations or the lack thereof, always shock me. From across the screen, this seems to me to be one of the most beautiful castle locations you guys visited.
Thanks, it was quite spectacular. In our next video we'll be showing more from the hike. It was quite sketchy at times, especially when descending from the castle!
@Algorithm be nice to these good history hikers
Fingers crossed!
Amazing! Omg 12:20 give me a cinewhoop for this place 😍
Would be a good place for FPV shots!
I love this part of Catalunya. Alt Emporda. visit it a lot. Do you also go to the medival town Castello DÉmpuries. Famous Church Església de Santa María 14 century and build on a church much older. A town with a lot of History too
We haven't been to Alt Emporda yet, but it sounds lovely!
I remember Merlin !
Amazing ocean views from there, what a crystalline sky! My favorite is the herringbone stone work (opus spicatum), which I never heard of before, so I thank you for the education. Cheers
It's something Jente looks out for in almost all medieval buildings! There's a lot more of it around than one might think.
@@TheHistoryHikers I’ll keep my eyes open for it, from now on. Thanks
Thank you for sharing this wonderful place. The views are stunning too. Welcome back!
Thank you! This was one of the most interesting places to visit in Catalonia in our eyes!
Wow! It's amazing how much has survived! Beautifully restored to. Thank you so much for sharing!! With love from Australia 🦘
Thanks so much for watching! It's a great place.
Hello from Brazil ☕️. Magnificent documentary. Beautiful scenery. Beautiful monastery. I loved the video.
Thanks ❤️!
Welcome back! So glad you shared this amazing location as your "we're back" video

Thanks for another great episode Guy's
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching 👍
Nice to see historic sites being made accessible. It's a shame about the backdrop, but great video!
Thanks a lot for watching ❤️
Both a castle and a sea view? Pity about the pylon I would give it a 6
Sounds about right, thanks for watching!
@@TheHistoryHikers thanks for schlepping up and down mountains so we can see castles with you
Oh sadly it’s a 5…it’s hard to go higher than 5 when the electric towers are so obtrusive. I guess the towers have to go somewhere.
If only you could have heard the cacophony of noise coming from the highway and quarry! Maybe 4 then haha
Yes a 9! Beautiful red sandstone and a beautiful view. Looks like a challenging hike to be sure 👍
Thanks! The hike was challenging, yet rewarding!
Another great location. Thank you for sharing this interesting place. Take care snd catch you later 😊
Thanks, have a good one!
Spain and Catalunya are doing a great job with ancient places . And you two are here : perfect.
Thanks! We are thinking of returning in November, maybe this time a bit more south. Somewhere around Castellon or Valencia.
Arbitrary Subjective Castle Score of 5. It is nice that they are preserving what is left and I am thankful that I could not hear the quarry noise, but it is difficult to feel back in time when one has towering power lines overhead and a modern highway below. Still, I may feel differently if I lived there as it may make for a nice hike into the hills. Thank you once again intrepid castle crusaders.
Your comment hit it on the nose, I think!
