    LG 4.5 cu. ft. Washer/Dryer Combo Model WM3998HBA
    How does this machine work, and can it wash AND dry clothes well?
    How suited is it for a costume shop?
    Demonstrates some functions and operations that are not well detailed in the manual.
    The printed manual that comes with the machine contains a QR link to extended instructions. That link is: us.smartthinq.... and does provide more detail on the operation and usage of the machine, but it is also still missing some information and contains some errors that I detail in the video.
    This is not technically a review of the machine, and I have no sponsorship agreement or expectations with the manufacturer. I simply felt there was a lack of good information online about this machine, and many complaints about operation and time usage in reviews through retailers further obfuscated that information. Some of those topics are covered in this video.
    Many of these features and controls are duplicated on single-task LG washers or dryers so some of the information here is transferrable.

    Thank you so much. I've recently downsized and I was convinced a washer/dryer combo would not work for me. In reality, after listening to you talk I've now done a 180. I work from home and am only doing laundry for myself now. You're right I don't have to dedicate a whole day to doing laundry, I can spread it throughout the week. Sometimes it's helpful to listen to someone else with a different perspective. So....once again, thank you for sharing this video.

    Does it matter what type of soap you use? Like does it have to be a liquid detergent or can I just throw a tide pod were the clothes would go? Not entirely sure if that damages the machine so I'm just trying to get a little insight. Thank you so much for the illuminating video I know we all appreciate it!

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358

      The only requirement is that it is HE detergent. Can be liquid or powder. I don’t use pods but I think pods should be okay too. Do they come in an HE variety? My previous machine was a 1993 top load washer so I learned a lot quickly about newer machines and not to use excessive quantities of detergent, that it’s the agitation, not the quantity of detergent, that cleans the laundry. I stick to 2 tbsp of liquid detergent or less, depending on the size of the load. I do toss the tub clean packets directly into the tub before running a tub clean cycle, so that is a similar thing to pods.

    Great Video - I'm just now starting to look at these for a small apt I am setting up in my basement area. I'm sure someone asked, but I can't see where to search the comments - Did you notice your electricity bill increasing with the amt of time that this machine takes to wash/dry? That cat cracked me up too :)

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад +2

      No I haven’t seen an increase in electricity costs. The dryer runs on 3 amps of 120v power. When you do the math, a 90 minute dry cycle for this machine uses 1/6 the electricity of a standard 220v electric dryer running 45-60 minutes to dry the same load. For a gas dryer this machine uses 2/5 the energy for the same load even though the time on the dry cycle is longer.
      Everyone thinks the longer dry times means more electricity usage but this machine is very efficient.

    *DONT DO THIS
    I didn't like that I had to clean the filter from my pets fur every time I did my laundry so i broke off the plastic cage on the filter. I added the wire lint catching sleve at the end of the drain hose and it worked great. I thought I cheated the system. But a month later the washer started giving me the error that it can't drain the water. Sure enough the fur that would normally be caught by the filter was now preventing the drain pump from working. I blew into the drain hose a few times and that seemed to do the trick to get the drain motor working again. And then I bought an new filter on Amazon for $13. Lesson learned.

  • @theartfulhomestead
    @theartfulhomestead 3 года назад +4

    Think of the longer cycle times this way: if you are like me, in a conventional washer/change the load to dryer I often found that an hour or two after the washer is done I have to put it in the dryer. The “oh I forgot to change the laundry to the dryer” and there’s your four hour cycle time anyway.
    Better yet you forget to take the wash out for DAYS and then have to do the load again. No more of that with the machine. If it says it will be done three hours later it’s completely done 3 hours later.
    All in all it’s still a time saver.

    • @theartfulhomestead
      @theartfulhomestead 3 года назад

      @@Fire_Marshall_Bill we got to a point where we were living out of the dryer. It made me insane. I hate doing laundry to begin with and having to rewatch loads when I was anxious to do a different load. Clothes would come out of the dryer still smelling musty. It was no longer worth the trouble. And boy could that stackable machine dance. This thing was in the kitchen and was just a monster. I’ve never been so happy to be rid of one appliance and the to own an this one. It solved every one of our issues and we are caught up on the laundry. It’s worth the 3 to 4 hour cycle time.

  • @sunnywiderman
    @sunnywiderman 2 года назад +3

    Not sure if one of the commenters has already mentioned this, but the manual says the Turbo wash is mandatory for both Normal and Heavy Duty cycles. In the chart on the manual you're holding, you can see there's a little dagger/cross beside the Turbo Option for those two cycles. Hidden by your thumb is the note: '[options marked with the dagger/cross are] automatically included in the cycle and cannot be deselected.'

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад +2

      I intentionally left in the footage of me struggling with the turbo because although the answer was in the manual and I had read through everything, not every little detail was immediately retained. I thought it would be more realistic to show that navigating the controls until you learn all the quirks and details can sometimes be frustrating. I didn’t want to sugarcoat the first-time-user “new experience” with the machine and put up a video where the machine and my navigation were perfect with every detail.

    For anyone here in 2024 having heard about a "new LG washer dryer combo", I want to mention that the model in this review (WM3998) is *extremely* different from the new WM6998 which has heat pump drying. That's a big, huge, massive deal in terms of not only drying times (DOE 10lb load wash and dry in under 2 hours on the new model compared to 4 hours on the old one) and energy usage - less than 1kWh instead of 3.5kWh for the old combo (and also almost all new vented dryers). The WM6998 also has TuboWash, AI DD 2.0 (no hall effect sensor and the ability to detect fabric type from the motor winding feedback - very clever, and even more reliable so far than the already pretty-darn-reliable hall effect direct drive system!) and a *self-cleaning condenser* which means no need to tear it down and brush lint out of the heat exchanger assuming normal levels of lint and all seals and screens are kept in good condition. Washed a queen size comforter in my WM6998 just the other day and it was *still* under 2 hours to wash and dry, extremely impressive. The old WM3998 would have been well into the 6 hours for that.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  3 месяца назад

      It doesn’t take 6 hours to wash and dry a Queen sized comforter on the 3998. I steam wash my comforter on Bedding cycle which is 2 hrs wash. Then it’s 90 minute dry. Done. Defo could wash it on a faster cycle. The new 6998 is also a larger cu ft capacity, and as I say in other videos on the 3998, a queen sized comforter wash and dry is actually over the capacity that you can expect good performance on for this machine.

  • @calstatelaalproductions2358

    From a question received by email:
    Some of previous LG Washer/Dryer models like the WM3997HWA had even more dryer settings such as “Damp“ “Low” and “More”. Even the Kenmore Elite 4002 and 4003 both made by LG had a “Damp” setting. Do you find the lack of temperature control for the dryer limiting? Is it too hot for certain fabrics?

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад

      I have not been unhappy with the lack of temperature controls on this machine’s dryer functions. My guess is that because it is larger (4.5 cu ft) and there just isn’t room for the additional components or because it is a condenser dryer rather than a heat pump dryer, that is why it has no dryer temp settings.
      Things do ”feel” hot coming out of the dryer, but all of the literature on ventless dryers say that they are all less hot than conventional dryers. I would not trust the feel of my hands to be an accurate gauge of the temperature of the fabric and the heat settings compared to conventional gas or electric. I guess that means I trust the literature.
      I have not noticed the dryer to damage any fabrics that I have put in. Even things that I would previously hand wash and hang dry, because I don’t want extra abrasion on the fabrics, I have been washing those on the delicate cycle and then doing a regular dry cycle afterwards with no noticeable deterioration to the fabrics. So that suggests to me that it is, in fact, a lower heat dry process than peoples’ anecdotal experiences and reviews indicate.
      This machine does caution you to avoid drying clothes with plastic-like fabrics like some active and exercise wear or bath mats with rubber backing or mattress covers that have a rubber or plastic lining. Those plastic and rubber components can damage the machine.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  Год назад +3

      I still love it. I am so much more efficient with my laundry as a result. And it treats my clothes so much better than my previous (and very old) top-loader.
      I haven’t had any problems with the washer. Other than clogging the pump drain filter a few times from cat hair and bath mat fibers. But that can be prevented by more regular cleaning of that filter.
      Just today for the first time (after 2.5 yrs) the selector dial was not responding right away to turning it. Will keep an eye out to see if that develops into a proper problem or if it was just a random thing and the dial just needed to be cycled through positions.
      Overall really happy with it. I would buy it again. Though there is a GE large capacity combo unit that might be competition these days. I am with this one for the long haul, at least 10 years if it will make it that long, or longer.
      I should do a video update. I haven’t made a video about the washer in a long while.

    Still the most comprehensive review I’ve seen so far! Thank you. After a year of hesitation all I can say is that I regret not getting it sooner. The long time is not a negative in my experience, most of the lint is drained with the water and a quick swipe of the rubber works. I have white rabbits at home, their hair is everywhere. I’m dealing with way less hair and lint on clothes now and I love the remote app control ❣️Most complains I see are user error, very rarely a defect.

    With a little more regular usage since shooting this video, I am finding that the cycles regularly need an extra 30 minute dry after running a full wash + dry cycle in normal, heavy duty, or towels. Especially if my load includes one or more towels or one or more pair of jeans.
    When adding that 30 minute dry only cycle, I also like to let the machine cool down for an hour or more before running the extra dry cycle. Which makes the washing at night and then getting up first thing in the morning to do the extra 30 minute dry only cycle the most efficient use of my time.
    I also prefer to wash jeans and towels on the normal cycle, because I can use steam with that cycle. I can’t add steam to the towels cycle.

      After the extra 30 min drying time, does it come out dry or do you still need to air dry for some more time? Thanks.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  3 года назад

      It depends on whether you let the load settle at all before you run the extra 30 minutes. If it completes the normal cycle and you run the extra 30 minutes immediately, it may often result in no net "feel" for the clothes. I tend to crack the door open and let the humidity escape for at least 30 minutes before running the extra dry cycle. I also tend to wash a load at night, and the clothes sit in the unit all night to let the internal humidity and heat equalize, and then run the extra 30 minutes in the morning. For the latter, things are often dry, but I do the extra dry cycle to fluff them up before pulling them out. In both of these examples, the extra 30 minutes is usually all that is needed.
      I have had some problems with synthetic rayon/spandex clothes where everything else will be fully dry after all the procedures above, but those one or two or three garments inside with the cottons will not be. In that case, I pull all the dry cottons out and just run the extra cycle for the synthetic fabrics that retain more moisture.

      I had an LG washer-dryer combo unit for about 5 years which I recently replaced. It was the largest capacity unit available. From my experience, you are trading the time it takes to wash and dry clothes for the convenience of not switching the load from washer to dryer. If you have more than two people in the household, expect to have a backup of dirty laundry waiting to be washed. The cycle on this machine is much longer than the conventional waher and dryer were you can run two loads at the same time. Also, you have to be mindful of what you put in (separate by fabric type, etc.) To get the desired results and proper operation. If not, you will find yourself adding 30 to 60 minutes to dry further, adding to the cycle time. Because of this (and the drum motor failing with no parts available), I bought the LG wash Tower stackable which is compact without sacrificing capacity. Washing and drying is under 2 hours total with better results.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад

      Actually the most important factor in choosing this machine is reduced energy usage. A typical complete wash and (longer) dry cycle uses less than one sixth of the energy of your conventional washer and (shorter) electric dry cycle.
      Convenience of not moving laundry to any other machine is hardly a significant gain. I am still handling loads nearly as much. Some loads can’t do an automatic dry cycle. Some items still need to be line dried. If you wash a full load, you have to split it into two dry cycles, so you are handling the laundry the same as conventional setup.
      If you don’t adjust your laundry habits, this machine will not be good for you. As I mention in the video, if you continue to save all your laundry for “laundry day” you are going to be frustrated with this machine. If you do loads as they come up, even with multiple people in the household, you should have minimal backing up of laundry. This machine will wash and dry while you sleep. Use that time to your advantage.
      If you have space for two machines and the disposable cash, buy two of these and place them side by side like your conventional washer and dryer. Now you’ve doubled your capacity while still dramatically reducing your energy usage.

      @@calstatelaalproductions2358 LG Wash Tower energy usage is $13/year, pretty minimal energy usage. In addition, the LG washer dryer unit I had required a lot of effort in cleaning the lint buildup after every load. Think about it- all that wet lint from the wash cycle stays there during the dry cycle and hardens. Wiping down that rubber door gasket takes effort and after using it for a while, you will notice chunks of lint sludge buildup behind the rubber gasket in the narrow crevice around the drum. To remove those lint chunks, you have to disassemble the rubber gasket via the steel band that holds the gasket in place but that requires some effort and know-how. Over time, that buildup will hinder the drum operation and can lead to failure. That is what ruined my unit. I started off a big fan of this kind of machine until the problems started. The LG Wash Tower I have now has much less lint buildup as I described earlier and a separate dryer lint filter.

      Yes it plugs into a standard 110v outlet. Parallel-blade-ground/PBG/U-ground 15A plug/outlet. Apparently the dryer component only draws around 3A when in operation. The washer has a higher amperage draw during a cycle than the dryer feature.

    I know what happens when it tells you 7 or 8 hours. My machine is older and always says 6:20.
    THE MACHINE DOES NOT KNIW WHAT ITS DRYING. So it starts out and determines what it has in the tub. You can kind of see it thinking it thru. Once it determines what you have it then gives you the time it thinks it needs to dry the load you gave it.
    So I have put stuff in there and it said 6:20 six hours, 20 minutes. After about 15 minutes or less it brought down that time. Once to 1:15. Hour and 15 minutes and once to 1:30. Hour and 30 minutes.
    Why it gives those 7 or 8 hour times to start I don’t know but it will adjust to whatever it thinks it has in the tub. I guess it’s assuming that the clothes are completely soaked?? I don’t know. But if your clothes are that soaked put it on a rinse and spin and then a dry.

      I only just discovered this a week or so ago. The manual said nothing about it, so when I saw the 8 hour time, I was like, Nope! Not gonna do that! But I accidentally hit a Normal dry-only cycle the other day when I meant to do a 30-minute dry-only cycle. I didn’t realize until it had been drying for 15 minutes or more when I glanced at the machine and saw it had chosen around an hour or so for a dry time. It must calculate the weight and volume of the load (wet, soggy clothes will weigh more; my load was mostly dry so it weighed less), just like it does before the wash cycles, to generate the actual Normal and Turbo dry-only cycles. Why it generates those long times initially makes no sense. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      I just did a load last night, Bedding cycle because it was a couple of throw rugs, no auto dry cycle after the wash cycle. I tried the Normal dry-only, and it was 8hrs plus until it finished the spin cycle, then it dropped down to just over an hour. It still needed another 30 minute dry this morning.
      The fact that there was no information about it in the manual made me totally avoid that feature as a dry-only cycle for six months. I would only do the timed dry and do my best guess, which typically for me, I start with 90 minutes for most loads. Even after starting this cycle last night, I didn’t trust it and kept checking while it was doing the 30 minutes of spin. But it proved me wrong and adapted, eventually.

    So in theory, if you buy 2 of these, with 4.5 vs normal 2.3...... you can do ~4 loads at a time, and get 4 loads done in 1.5 hours....
    That's actually freaking amazing..... o.o

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  3 года назад

      I have been musing that people who have a washer and a dryer should ditch both and buy two of these. It's a fair chunk of change to get two. But then you could double your efficiency versus having just one. The down side is that washing and drying a full 4.5 cu ft of laundry is not going to happen in 1.5 hours. The larger the load, the longer the dry time. I would guess more than 2 hours of dry time just to dry a larger load. And then if you ditched your full-sized dryer as in the scenario I just mentioned, which is typically around 7-8 cu ft, for this slower, ventless dryer, you might feel like you lost something that didn't quite make up for what you gained in the dual combo setup. I can't test the dual combo setup because my home only has the hookup for the washer, no dryer hookup, no power for a full electric model, and no gas hookup for a gas model, and no space for a second unit.

    Awesome review!! You mentioned a lot of the things we learned upon using our first washer/ dryer!!
    We pre sort our clothes. As we take them off we have a recycling bin to put them in. Once one is full do a load! No wait for laundry day!!
    Waiting for mine to arrive!! I've had another previous version and loved it!! We wont fo back to two machines!
    Kinda can't as we built our home to use one now😊 It drove the builder a tad nuts lol🤣
    Only downside we had...if it REALLY breaks, well your replacing it and doing both wash n dry at laundromat . (Parts for previous model could easily be found online, not too difficult to fix, just getting to the part if the pump)
    So far we've had to custom order both versions. This time sadly, hurricane Ian has made a HUGE demand.
    Now of we could only get a it to fold clothes too!!😉
    Question:.Which settings would you recommend for dress shirts.. less wrinkles as possible(I hate ironing) hubby's new job requires wearing them, so it's new to us that do each week. I figured a light load settings with less spin?
    We used perm press on old version this has quite a few options.
    I'm so interested in the steam feature! Can you use that solo?
    Thanks for the awesome video!

      I haven’t done a lot of dress shirts. I did do one a few weeks back so I chose Single Garment from the app’s downloadable cycles. I was worried about one garment not allowing it to spin and rinse properly, but it did balance fine. It was one button down white shirt. I think I did the normal dry cycle separately rather than automatically. I don’t remember it having significant wrinkles after the dry. (Single Garment works for a shirt or blouse or something lightweight. Don’t use it for a single pair of jeans or a single bath towel.)
      Otherwise I would recommend delicates cycle and a small to medium load. Several commenters complain about everything coming out of this machine wrinkled. I suspect they have too many clothes during the dry cycle. If the clothes can’t tumble freely, that’s going to result in more wrinkles. So I’d suggest for clothes that need ironing to avoid wrinkles, try drying loads no bigger than halfway to the “max fill line” for drying, or about 1/3 of a tub.
      I haven’t used the Fresh Care feature, but that is supposed to intermittently tumble your clothes after a dry cycle until you can get to them to prevent wrinkles from them just sitting there when drying is finished.
      Curious why your builder would be having trouble meeting your request. It’s water hookups and 110v power, no dryer vent install, no 220v electricity, no dryer gas hookups. What’s the problem?

      Folding and putting away the clothes, that would be next level Starship Enterprise stuff!
      I’ve had mine almost 2 years and when I bought it, it was a 4-week wait or more depending on where I got it from. A couple months earlier I had to choose my second choice kitchen range because of pandemic appliance shortages and demands. But happy with that second choice because I think it is a better stove; it was a few hundred dollars more than my first choice.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  Год назад +1

      You do want to use the highest spin possible for any dry cycle. Spin extracts the water to make the drying efficient and effective. It shouldn’t contribute to wrinkles. (I need to do a video about how using a medium spin affects drying. There’s too much moisture in the clothes so it struggles to dry and actually turns the dry cycle into a sauna cycle.)
      Steam isn’t a solo option. It’s an add on to the wash cycles. Only the ones on the left side of the dial though. Can’t add steam to the Towels cycle because it’s on the right. So I do my towels in Normal so that I can get the steam option. Normal + Steam is usually a 2 hr 7 minutes wash cycle including wash, steam, rinse, and spin. So it significantly lengthens any wash cycle.

    Some of the Amazon reviews for the previous model WM3997HWA suggest that the dryer function on that model works better when the drain tube is lower and is assisted by gravity. I’ve seen your video with the cold and hot water hook ups but couldn’t see how high or low you had the drain. How high is your drain?

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад +1

      I did have to cut down my drain tube on the back wall because I needed extra space to build the counter surround in the back. While doing that and installing the machine, I did wonder if the top of the wall drain position was important. It occurred to me that it should be lower than the outlet on the back of the machine, to prevent backflow and back siphoning.
      I haven't experienced any issues that I can attribute to the wall drain position. If you put your machine on the optional pedestal, that would probably get the machine outlet higher than the top of a typical wall drain tube. Mine went on 2" anti-vibration pads, so that lifted it up a tiny bit.
      There are significant design changes from the WM3997HWA 4.3 cu ft and the WM3998HBA 4.5 cu ft, so maybe they dealt with that issue somehow?
      I don't remember anything in the manual about optimal position of the hose going into the wall drain tube.

      Gosh no. All the water drains out the same tube that the wash water goes out. But most front loaders have a pump drain filter that it passes through and you need to clean that out regularly. In order to clean that filter, you need to drain out the 3 cups of water that is left behind by any wash or dry cycle.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  Месяц назад

      All water from the wash cycle or extracted moisture from the dry cycle (after it is re-condensed into water) exits first through the drain pump and drain pump filter on it’s way to the hose and your washer drain hookup. But there is a reservoir and 3 cups of water or so always remains behind there. You don’t want to leave that water sit there for a long time. And the pump drain filter will catch fibers and other things in both the wash and dry cycle and will need regular cleaning. I do it at least once a week.

I'm so torn! Help!

      Before I committed to this, I was going just buy a new washer and continue line drying clothes, because I don’t have any dryer hookups and would need to do an electrical panel upgrade to install a dryer and it would have to go outside. I was on the fence a bit, put off by reviews online and on the home improvement stores that sell this machine. But I plunged. And I am sooooo glad I did.
      The maintenance does not bother me. Long term, yeah, the lint cleanup in the door seal can get annoying but I have found the tub clean cycle with an additive helps break up any hard to get buildup and so far after 18 months it’s still looking good.
      The drain pump filter maintenance doesn’t bother me at all. What bothers me more is if I neglect that and have a drain clog mid wash, so I am cleaning out the pump drain filter every week to ten days due to my laundry and pet situation.
      The minimal energy use is the best sell for me. This machine takes longer to dry but uses 1/6 the energy of a conventional electric dryer for the same load and 2/5 the energy for the same with a gas dryer. Plus it is definitely gentle on my clothes. Things feel warm coming out of the dryer but the condition of clothing does not indicate any heat damage to normal cotton-type fabrics and blends.
      Mine is in the kitchen and I intended to make a butcher block cover for additional kitchen prep space, but I prefer keeping it clear for sorting and folding clean dry laundry.
      I almost never have more than 1.5 loads of laundry accumulating. And a load for me is half to 2/3 the tub capacity. There’s no hesitation about doing a load if I can put it in at bedtime and it be dry by the morning, or at most need an extra 30 minute dry cycle.
      If your clothing wardrobe is comprised of mostly active wear with plastic or rubber-like fabrics, then this machine is not for you.
      If you have a king sized comforter, that will need to go to the laundromat. I can do a queen sized comforter, wash and dry (I made a video about that).
      Oh and I use a lot less detergent now. Apparently no front loader HE machine needs more than 2 tablespoons of detergent. But the max fill line is like a quarter cup. So I have been scaling that back as well based on the recommendation of appliance repair techs. Definitely using less detergent than my old top loader.

    This is an incredible video. Thanks for putting this together. Totally changed my mind and I am going to try out this unit to move my laundry into my home - from outside.
    Can you use tide pods with this machine?

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад

      I don't know about tide pods. I use a liquid laundry detergent and use the dispenser tray in the way the machine is designed. I do put the tub clean capsules directly into the tub rather than using the dispenser tray because the ones I use are a block of cleaner material, so I assume you could do the same thing with a tide pod.
      Been watching an appliance repair tech on TikTok, username renduh, and apparently all modern machines only need two table spoons of liquid laundry detergent, even though the tray can hold 1/4 cup or more. Many use too much detergent and it is bad for clothes and modern machines, this one included. So keep that in mind about how much to use.
      For years I had been planning to move my laundry outside the kitchen, to a deck or area that I was going to install pavers. I wanted to be able to have a washer and a dryer. My small kitchen only fits one machine, and I don't have any electrical hookup for an electric dryer. I even had a plumber install washer hookups out there when I replaced my water heater years ago (installed a tankless in that location.) When I was tiling my kitchen floor eighteen months ago, I moved the washer to that location on a temporary low platform for several weeks. The machine got so dirty so fast. I don't think I would have been happy with outdoor laundry from that trial.
      In the kitchen, I could use that space for more kitchen cabinets, counter space, and/or pantry space. I considered a stacking unit, but finally settled on this machine. I am so happy with it because it solved my problem without getting a second unit, without moving things outdoors, without having to install electrical or gas hookups for the dryer. The trade-off of not gaining kitchen workspace or storage space is totally worth it.

      Lots of ppl experience this. I don’t. But I don’t wash a lot of clothes that need ironing. If the clothes don’t have enough room to tumble while drying, that could be a factor. The tub has a max fill line at 2/3 for drying. Still don’t know if that is the the fill line for dry laundry before the the wash or if that is the fill line for wet laundry after the wash.
      Fresh Care is supposed to help with wrinkle control by continuing to tumble things after the dry finishes and as clothes cool down. Or if you forget to get your laundry out right after the dry cycle.
      It is a smaller tub than your typical stand alone dryer. 4.3 cu ft as opposed to 7+ cu ft for most dryers. So you have to scale your dry load size down.
      I would also suggest not to mix and match in the same load items that need ironing with things that don’t, especially jeans and towels.

    Thanks for the through review. I was interested in a combo unit to save some space so I could add some shelves. The fact you need to drain the reservoir & remove wet lint every two weeks or less convinced me these combo units are not for me.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  2 года назад

      The drain is a feature on all front load stand alone washers, so any front loader will have this maintenance requirement, not just the combo units.
      If you neglect it in the washers, it will get stinky and rank. I have cats which creates a lot of stuff to get caught in the lint filter. I also do a lot of steam washes and some of my bath mats shed a lot. Those factors require me to do more frequent cleaning.

    That was a great video! I have this exact same machine and yes I do agree that the manual completely sucks. Even when I called them, the girl on the phone couldn’t believe how bad the manual was especially when it came to the drying part of it which is not mentioned in the manual and barely mentioned in the PDF. I have used this machine a number of times and the thing that annoys me the most is how wrinkled the clothes are afterwards. I’m still trying to find that sweet spot. I remove the clothes immediately and yet they are still wrinkled. Cute cat by the way!

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  3 года назад +1

      Another commenter also mentioned continual problems with wrinkling. I offered some thoughts in reply, but also learned recently (like just a couple weeks ago) there is a max fill line on the inner rim of the tub opening near the door latch. That is the maximum dry load level you should fill the machine if you want to also dry it afterward. If you fill the wash load higher than that, you should take half the load out after the wash and dry it in two batches. I wonder if that will help with wrinkles?
      I don't wash a lot of clothes that need regular ironing, so I can't comment on how those clothes do for wrinkles at the various load sizes.

    I agree that it depends on your mindset. In our building, we can only have non vented dryers in our suites. It's an old building with old wiring. So I bought a Blomberg washer and dryer (after having 220 wiring and the plumbing installed). I've had my washer and dryer for over three years. I'm very satisfied with my purchase. But I'm not comparing them to a washer and vented dryer. I'm comparing them to lugging my washing down to the basement and all the inconvenience that entails. Which means I am extremely happy every time that I do laundry. My washer and dryer is quicker than an all in one, but slower than a vented dryer.

      You are referring to the white tub vent on the center back? I haven’t had that issue. But several commenters talked about it being an issue when I first posted the video. I didn’t have a good answer for them at the time but have since learned that if you have steam and hard water deposits and calcification coming out of the tub vent, it is usually a sign of using too much detergent in your loads. For most loads you only need 2 tablespoons of HE detergent. I do medium to small loads most of the time, so I am often using less than that. It’s not the detergent that gets the clothes clean as much as the agitation process, so adding more detergent doesn’t get things cleaner. It just creates buildup in your machine and on your clothes. So less detergent or “use less laundry sauce” as one trusted appliance repair tech says. I think overloading the machine could also contribute.

    • @calstatelaalproductions2358
      @calstatelaalproductions2358  3 года назад

      I have not seen any feature to adjust dry temperature. My guess is the only way to do that is to dry in shorter timed manual dry cycles and then crack the door open to let some of the heat and humidity escape between cycles. I do that sometimes if I am drying something after a wash cycle (rather than through the auto dry cycle feature) and I am guessing how long to run it. I’ll start with 60 minutes. Then let it cool down and de-humidify with the door cracked, then follow that with another 30 minute dry cycle and another rest cycle, repeating until dry. Still learning how much time to program in for those manual dry cycles. Most of my laundry is cotton and I haven’t noticed any shrinkage, but I have almost always washed clothes exclusively in hot water, so perhaps my clothes have already shrunk as much as they are going to from past wash history. the potential with an app is to add new functionality to the washer with app add ins and firmware upgrades, though it’s hard to tell if LG would even think to do something like this as an app add on.

      Are you drying on the turbo dry setting or the normal dry setting? I remember reading in the manual that with turbo dry the machine needs to cool the drum down more frequently and uses more energy as a result. Perhaps that means the turbo dry setting is significantly hotter than the normal dry setting? I haven't really used the turbo dry setting at all. I'm never in that much of a hurry to save a few minutes on the dry cycle and I lean toward the more energy efficient options anyway when given a choice.

    This must be your review
    ITS LIKE FLYING THE STAR SHIP ENTERPRISE
    After installing the machine and sitting in front of it for about an hour and putting it through some cycles in order to become familiar with its operation and getting it to do what it is that I require, I find that I love the system. This is an intuitive machine and you must become familiar with the control panel to operate it at its best. (This may be a bit of a difficult learning curve for some and so I suggest a bit more operation instruction be included) The design, fit and finish is well done and the machine is very pretty, I love the color and the shine. And because of that I have refinished my laundry area to match it. And another benefit has been the extra room that I have gained with the removal of my old dryer, a win, win. I have read other reviews and watched a few related youtube reviews before I bought and there are some that say that after the cycle the clothes come out a little damp. And what I have found is that they must not have 1. loaded the machine properly, and 2. taken the time to learn how the machine works best. Most all of my washes with dry cycle included all have come out bone dry. Only once in a while I have to include a bit more drying time. And after that 30 or so minutes the wash is warm and bone dry. This kind of machine is not for everyone. But if you want to load your washer in the morning, set it to wash then dry and come home at night and just fold your nice clean and dried clothes, and you are not required to remove the wet wash from the washer and then dry it, this is the machine for you. I love it. I would enthusiastically recommend this washer / dryer combo unit.

      I don’t remember writing a review anywhere other than what I posted on these videos. It is possible I did post this somewhere and forgot. The title mentioning the starship enterprise certainly lines up with comments in the middle of my video. I don’t recognize the writing style as me tho.
      Pretty sure I would not post in a review that loads almost always come out bone dry. Mileage may vary depending on how you operate the machine. And depending on how you build your loads. I’m someone who likes to try out different things, see what happens, come to conclusions, try again and see if it is repeatable. Experimentation and discovery. Not a skill that everyone has. So I made videos with many of my discoveries. I follow an appliance repair technician on another platform and I regularly see my discoveries through experimentation validated by a professional.

      I don't think the comparison of energy usage gets discussed nearly enough of within the right context. Conventional dryers to expel a LOT of energy through heat. Apparently if you don't vent it outside, then you are overtaxing your air conditioning in that laundry area.
      I've re-run the numbers again on the energy usage. A conventional electric dryer uses 5-7 Kw per hour, and a typical dry load will be 45-90 minutes. So let's say one hour. A gas dryer will use about 30% of that cost in the same hour, plus a smaller amount of 120v electricity; let's call it 2/5 of the cost of the electric dryer. These ventless dryers may take 3 hours on average to dry a load of laundry, and everyone thinks that means the energy usage is much higher, but it's actually not. Stand-alone versions of this dryer only use 3A, which when the math is done, comes to less than 1 Kw for the full three-hour cycle. Net result, this machine dries for 1/6 the energy cost of the electric version (even though it can take 3x as long) and less than half the energy cost of the gas version. Seems like a strong selling point, but it's just not there in the literature, reviews, or marketing.

      This absolutely does not put any humidity into the room. The process extracts the humidity and moisture and pumps it out the washer drain. It can heat up the room a few degrees while drying, tho. And one commenter said they run a load intentionally on cold mornings because they also have it in the kitchen like me and doing so warms up the kitchen.
      When opening the door immediately after a dry cycle, there can be a brief release of humidity from inside the tub but not enough to actually change the overall room humidity.
