    You are definitely growing as a formulator. I remember not too long ago you were trying to figure out which solvent to use with salicylic acid. Congrats! 👏 Let's see if you'll be working with lactic acid (like a lotion or moisturizer) and possibly formulating sunscreens.

    • @TaraLeee

      Thank you so much! Yes it took so long to figure it out. I’ve used lactic acid tons of times, I have a few formulas using it here on my channel. Haven’t done a moisturizer though, but that’s a great idea!
      I have a video on my channel discussing why I won’t be making a sunscreen though.

      @@TaraLeee yeah, literally sunscreen formulations might be really hard to make. Companies might keep it as a big secret and we can tell by how pricey sunscreens are

    • @Binkles

      Individuals can’t make sunscreens; it takes *really* well-funded labs. It’s not just astonishingly difficult to make, but all the testing to see whether you’ve succeeded would break a normal person with a normal wallet.

    TARALEE! Killin' IT! This is beautiful, I cannot wait to try it. I can't believe I am saying this (because I still feel so much younger than I am), but I will be 40 this year and it is really beginning to show in my skin. I have tons of little benign, but obnoxious dry patches all over my skin. They are invisible until I put on a self-tan, and the pigment collects around them and I'm left with unsightly little spots all over my arms and legs. I'm really curious to see if consistent use of AHA/BHA-containing lotions will improve the texture of my skin. I'm really excited to try this and see if it might restore some of my youthfulness. Thank you so much, love all your content!

    Awesome video SA, there are many people who don't want to mess with it, because it's regulated. However, it's worth the hassel. It's a great ingredient, and should be used more often. The process is a little daunting, but the people at the FDA are nice and will walk you through the whole process. If you read there page on the website, it sounds complicated, it's not as bad as the printed version sounds, lol!

    Liquid salicylic acid is so much easier to work with! FSS has liquid willow bark extract 10% and 20%. My toner formula is:
    10% willow bark extract (use 20% SA equivalent for 2% SA content)
    0.5% liquid germall plus
    5% propanediol 1,3
    2% green tea extract (or any other botanical extract with antioxidants - I use this in the morning and it's good to have your antioxidants on before exposure to the oxidative stress of the day)
    Water to 100%
    I adjust the pH to 3.0-3.9 with lactic acid.

    • @TaraLeee
      @TaraLeee  2 года назад

      Liquid version probably would be easier, but I wanted to use the powder version. Also Willow bark extract isn’t as strong as salicylic acid. They are compared to one another often but definitely not at strong.

    • @clarewhite3004
      @clarewhite3004 2 года назад

      @@TaraLeee Okay yeah you were totally right about salicyn vs salicylic acid! But! I still found something easy to work with! It's a 40% salicylic acid solution from MakingCosmetics. It's water-soluble, just pour and stir. It wouldn't be cost-effective for large-scale production, but for people who are just formulating as a hobby like me, it's perfect. I paid about $14 for 2.3 fl oz. I know you were more interested in the powder, but it would be a nice option for intermediate formulators.

  • @angelasandberg1962
    @angelasandberg1962 7 месяцев назад

    Hey Tara! I have a question - I just made the toner and it seemed foamy when I went to use it - (like a surfactant was added to it)? I went to FSS and checked out the poly suga mulse D9, and it says rec usage rates for leave on products is 1-2% 😱 if we used at 5% for the toner, is that ok since it’s a natural ingredient??? Maybe that was the cause.. Do solubilizers cause foaming like surfactants when agitated? Thx! 💜

    Tara, does changing the Ph from acid to neutral reduce the effectiveness of salicylic acid? How does the lotion exfoliate if it’s no longer an acid? Is Salicylic an exception?

    • @charlyjgm
      @charlyjgm 2 года назад

      It does not. There're some studies confirming this property. Salicylic acid is still effective at neutral pH (7). That why profesional peel that are highly alcohol based and at concentration of 35-40% are still effective.
      Some people say Salicylic acid is the exception when we talk about pH 😅

      as for a substitute, it depends on what’s she’s making. if she’s making bar soap, sodium hydroxide is your only option. or you could use potassium hydroxide for liquid soap.
      if she is using sodium hydroxide to raise the ph, then she could use Triethanolamine instead. you can purchase that here www.makingcosmetics.com/STA-TRIET-01.html?lang=en_US

    your video is awesome. However, using Poly80 is somewhat a challenge its a surfactant and oil based and adding to the water and salicylic solution will cause the oil to not disperse. Even though the Salicylic acid will dissolve there is the other challenge of ensuring the water and oil combines to ensure one even consistent product.

      all my sources say that polysorbate 80 is water soluble.

      @@TaraLeee HI Tara, thanks for responding. I tried everything as you suggested but it doesn't disperse. Once the solution settles there is separation. I am thought dissapointed since I went and got the poly 80.....I'm wondering, what else to do to tweak this so it works.

    I dissolve salicylic acid in propylene glycol and add polysorbate 20 but after adding water it starts to crystalize. which solubilizers I could use to keep it soluble in water?

      Would love to hear some feedback on the results once he starts using your end product! I remember those teen years..I never really had any issues per se....until after I volunteered to have a Mary Kay facial makeover done...ugh I vowed never again! Base was so thick,too oily made me breakout mainly on the forehead..took my neighbor getting me a sample prescription from her work..she happened to work at a local dermatology office...mind you this was in the 80s.. very limited on products that actually worked....not a lot of public research info available at the time! Even at my age... I get an occasional zit lol

      @@morpro4u me too!!! Interesting though Mary Kay had this facial cleanser that used to be the only thing that would clear my face… but apparently it was irritating and would cause tiny tears in my skin…every-time silly me was willing to deal with it to get rid of the acne…I think that active ingredient was benzoyl peroxide…I THINK. I’m definitely going to follow up.
