Salicylic Acid can be solubilized using ethanol, glycols, and nonionic ethoxylated fatty alcohols. It’s not an easy ingredient to work with, but I find warming up the glycol helps to solubilize the acid better.

It is not soluble in many things, but if you use about 1.5% salicylic acid powder to glycerin, you should be able to get it to dissolve. That, however, would create a 1.5% solution in the glycerin.
Wow! Natural teacher! Thank you for such a clear explanation. Would salicylic acid dissolve in 96% alcohol? and also Can I make this with distilled water?
Hi, lovely video! Could you please tell me how I would know when to use an additional ingredient to support another (sodium citrate -- salicylic acid)? Thanks! I am learning to make skincare, and there are many little things that I have to pay attention to.
In the case of sodium citrate and salicylic acid (SA), it is about solubilizing. At pH levels below 3.5, you often get SA precipitating out of solution and FDA regulations require pH level of above 3.5. As for the question about additional ingredients to support another, it’s a very broad question as there are many ingredients and many supporting ingredients as well as contraindications. You would need to research into each ingredient and the final product outcome desire.
Hi and thanks for the great and necessary video 👍. I'd like to mix salicylic acid powder with an aloe vera gel to make 2% aloe vera body gel. First, I'm gonna use glycerin to dissolve the salicylic acid powder but do I need to add some sodium carbonate and citric acid too for pH balance and how much, while heating up the mixture, before I can blend the glycerin-salisylic mixture with the aloe vera gel or is that ready to be used without any of these two extra ingredients? You mentioned something about pH. 3.5 and sodium carbonate.
I believe you mean sodium citrate OR sodium bicarbonate. Sodium citrate can basically be replaced by mixing citric acid and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). The regulations state that products sold on the market cannot be below 3.5pH, so not only is the sodium citrate being used for helping dissolve the salicylic acid, but also adjusting pH.
Thank you for video.....how much should be the pH for a serum or a cream with acids? (AHA or BHA)? I have learned, if you neutralize acids, they loose their efficacy.....but I also know, serums and creams should be pH 5-6? Thats why I am a little bit confused....I have all these products at home, and I use acids only for peeling, but I never used it in serums and creams before...Greetings from Germany
She answers your question several times in the video: the FDA requires the pH be less than 3.5 to be considered “spa-quality.” Beyond that and it’s considered a drug.
If you are making it to sell in the United States, the PH has to be 3.5 or less under FDA rules. But if it is for personal use only of course you can adjust the PH to your own taste (with an outlook toward safety).
I would love to see you try to make water activated eyeliners!!! Suva beauty does them with only Water, Glycerin, Acacia Senegal Gum, Calcium Carbonate and oxides/pigments. Graphic eyeliners are a HUGE trend rn and i want to try to make them at home. Hope you read this 💕
Hello! great video! I wanted to know if it would work with sodium lactate. I was going to test out this theory and found that sodium lactate was much more natural.
Does hyaluronic acid normally re-precipitate in water? I dissolved hyaluronic acid in water and it turned into a satisfying thick gel for a couple of days, and then a layer of white goo appeared at the bottom of my potion, the water became fluid again. If I shake it well for a few minutes the solution becomes thickened, but then again it split into water and white matter at the bottom. Is this how hyaluronic acid behaves normally? Or I have bough some strange thing?
I have seen this occur with HA whenever the pH is too low. Did you check your final gel’s pH? Have you tried adjusting the pH once it becomes that fluid?
@@EssentialLabsOfficial Thanks. I'll look at it. I just dissolved it in water and didn't do any pH checking. I guess HA may have altered the pH itself.
do you still need to add sodium citrate if you dissolve using only the propylene glycol? will it not crystalize with just the propylene glycol and no sodium citrate? thanks
Essential Wholesale & Labs hi thanks for getting back to me...I managed to dissolve it in propylene glycol without the citrate and I put it aside as a stick solution though when it came to adding it to my formula it crystallised again....I tried heating my formula before adding it too yet it still crystallised...it made no sense as to why the stock solution remains fine but when adding it to a formula it crystallises...have you any idea as to why this may be? Again thanks for taking the time to reply to me it’s much appreciated
@@somethingaboutnay6019 probably because (i assume) the rest of your formula has water. I that case you'll need to ad sodium citrate or sodium lactate, to prevent the crystal formation.
@@bellavidahana for example my formula is: glycerin 10%, propylen glycol 63.3%, sodium lactate 5%, water 19.7%, salicylic acid 2%. Although I'm still working on decreasing the propylene glycol and increasing the water and maybe the sodium lactate too, but I haven't had time to try a new formula. But the last time I tried, those percentages worked perfectly. And I mix then all at room temperature, first the SA with the PG, then SL, then Glycerin, when all that it's completely clear i add the water.
I’ve seen other formulators use sodium lactate to dissolve SA. Is that another option to dissolve SA or does sodium lactate covert SA to a different/less effective chemical compound?
Glycols are organic alcohol. SA only dissolves in alcohol. Ethanol, isopropanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, etc. Sodium lactate is the salt or the sodium part of lactic acid. Therefore no it won't dissolve and will crystallize.
Hello, please answer my question, Now the pH of salicylic acid is 2.4 does it mean it needs the products’ pH to be in this level so that it could be effective? If I raised the pH to 5.5 like our skin’s pH won’t it be effective?
Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid and a larger molecule than Alpha Hydroxy Acids. Unlike Alpha Hydroxy Acids, Salicylic Acid is able to perform effectively at a higher pH, and actually is better for the skin than a lower pH salicylic acid product. Without getting too technical, the amount of free non-dissociate salicylic acid is not a factor in the efficacy of the salicylic acid. In fact, the lower the pH of the solution of salicylic acid, the more likely you will experience skin irritation and barrier disruption. Sources: Bashir SJ, Dreher F, Chew AL, et al. Cutaneous bioassay of salicylic acid as a keratolytic. Int J Pharm. 2005;292(1-2):187-194. Merinville, E., Byrne, A.J., Rawlings, A.V., Muggleton, A.J. and Laloeuf, A.C. Does it have to be sodium citrate anhydrous? Or is sodium citrate dihydrate okay? Thanks so much Edit: maybe I'm confusing this for sodium acetate...? Is all sodium citrate anhydrous..?
@@quantumlooper9162 I actually have some sodium lactate on hand (a 60% liquid solution). Can I replace sodium acetate with this? If so, how should I change the ratio to water? Eg, do I have to add even more than that to keep SA dissolved?
@@ivymazzola1214 No. Sodium citrate is the salt from citric acid (from citrus fruits). Sodium lactate and sodium acetate are completely different salts and cannot be substituted for sodium citrate. You want to reduce the concentration 2 times lower, so you need to add the same amount of alcohol in grams. If you have 100g of 20% acid add another 100g of alcohol to get 200g of 10% acid
It is not soluble in oil. We have had no luck with this even when trying multiple different methods. Even when it looked like it solubilized, it would crystal out.
If I want to make 2% salicylic acid serum and I have 2% salicylic acid dissolved in 98% propylene glycol, how do I know how much SA solution should I put in my serum to reach 2%? Is there any formula?
Per cent literally means 'per hundred'. Take 2% and that means 2 per 100 or 2 divided by 100 which equals 0.02, now take the total of the salicylic acid solution example 75g, multiply 75 and .02 which is 1.5g of salicylic acid in the solution. Add total weight of the other ingredients in the formulation example 50g to the weight of the solution 75g which is 125g total. Since you have 1.5g of salicylic acid in there then divide 1.5g / 125g which is .012. Multiply .012 by 100 and you get 1.2% salicylic acid. No matter how much 2% you add it will never be more than 2% in the serum because it is getting diluted. You need a stronger percentage to dilute down to get 2% total in the end.

How to make 10% salicylic acid serum from pure salicylic powder.?
Thanks ,what a great channel but I am so confused now 😂 need watch again.
Can can be dissolved salicylic acid in oil?
I would love to see you try to make water activated eyeliners!!! Suva beauty does them with only Water, Glycerin, Acacia Senegal Gum, Calcium Carbonate and oxides/pigments. Graphic eyeliners are a HUGE trend rn and i want to try to make them at home. Hope you read this 💕
👌
Can we substitute sodium citrate for citric acid in this formulation?
No
Could would you please show how to make salicylic acid pads
From where could i found hyaluronic acid i mean which shop it exist.
We sell high quality vegan hyaluronic acid powder on our website >> essentialwholesale.com/hyaluronic-acid-powder
Will it dissolve in Everclear? (90% alcohol). Also, I would think some PPE would be a good idea here....
Yes, it should and yes PPE is a great idea. It’s hard to show that on video because you can’t see or hear me but good point.
@@EssentialLabsOfficial Hah sorry but I figure you know what you are doing and for what reasons.. Just saying.
doesn't the salicylic acid turn to sodium salicylate because of adding sodium bicarbonate?
hello can you please tell me how much to use proplyne glycol to dissolve 2gr of salicylic acid powder
Doesn't the salicylic acid get converted to Sodium salicylate (salt of Salicylic acid) ?
Hello! great video! I wanted to know if it would work with sodium lactate. I was going to test out this theory and found that sodium lactate was much more natural.
Is it safe to mix 2 acids?
I mean, using hyaluronic and salicylic acid
Hyaluronic is a humectant
What about salicylic acid oil
Thank you so much for your explanation
You're welcome!
I guess HA may have altered the pH itself.
do you still need to add sodium citrate if you dissolve using only the propylene glycol? will it not crystalize with just the propylene glycol and no sodium citrate? thanks
You should not need the sodium citrate at all, this is just an option for this particular formula.
Carlos Guajardo At what point should the sodium lactate be added? I’m new and want to experiment this coming week. Cheers!

Does it have to be sodium citrate anhydrous? Or is sodium citrate dihydrate okay? Thanks so much
Edit: maybe I'm confusing this for sodium acetate...? Is all sodium citrate anhydrous..?
Yes. Sodium citrate or sodium citrate anhydrous. Same thing :)
@@quantumlooper9162 thank you!!
@@quantumlooper9162 I actually have some sodium lactate on hand (a 60% liquid solution).
Can I replace sodium acetate with this?
If so, how should I change the ratio to water?
I assume, since the lactate is a solution already, I'll have to cut water and add more sodium to end up proportional to the original recipe... But is S Lactate as effective as S Acetate..? Eg, do I have to add even more than that to keep SA dissolved?
@@ivymazzola1214 No. Sodium citrate is the salt from citric acid (from citrus fruits). Sodium lactate and sodium acetate are completely different salts and cannot be substituted for sodium citrate. Only sodium citrate will work in formulas for preventing re-crystallization - which is its purpose here.
@@quantumlooper9162 Ooh, okay! Thank you! Wow, so many sodiums in the world.. I even used the wrong name for your salt above... Where did I get acetate from 😅
This is very helpful info, thank you very much!
Can you add salicylic acid powder in a melt and pour soap recipe?
hello if I'm using salicylic liquid 20% how much alcohol 90% should i use to dilute to 10%? If you could help Please
You want to reduce the concentration 2 times lower, so you need to add the same amount of alcohol in grams. If you have 100g of 20% acid add another 100g of alcohol to get 200g of 10% acid
Hello! thanks for video, what would happen if you put the dissolve salicylic acid (in 96 alcohol) in oil instead?

Where do I buy pennilyn glycol (alternative to propylene glycol)?
Hi Jamila! I'm not sure about pennilyn glycol. Have you thought about propanediol? It is another alternative to propylene glycol.
We have a blog post explaining propanediol vs propylene glycol >> library.essentialwholesale.com/propylene-glycol-alternative-propanediol/
Unfortunately we aren't currently selling our stock of propanediol until we can get a stable supply. Check our website in a few months and it should be back in stock.
Is it ok to put pure liquid salicydic acid on my pimple?

Can i immerse green tea in methylated spirit 100 percent and after 1 week i want to strain my tincture. I want to add my mct oil in the tincture and let spirit to completly evaporate. Will that give me green tea infused mct oil?
You will have a hard time mixing oil and alcohol together. You might want to just immerse the green tea in the MCT and skip the alcohol altogether.

Propanediol as a solvent?
Well, it does work for this particular application. Perhaps solvent is the wrong term.
Hi there, great video! I dissolved 2% salicylic into 10% propylene glycol. I then mixed it into 88% warmed distilled water. A few seconds after I mixed the solution into the water it turned white and slightly coagulated. Can you please help fix this? I’m trying to make a 2% sprayable solution.
SA is not an easy ingredient to work with and can easily crash out of water. Before writing off what you’re doing however, have you checked the pH of the final product? Adjusting the pH might help thin it down. I would start there first.
Essential Wholesale & Labs thanks for your reply! The final product is 3.5 ph. I’ll try an adjuster on the next batch. I’ll also try deionized water. I’ll let you know if that changes anything.
Can i just buy hyloronic acid serum and dissolve the salicylic powder in it?
Without knowing what is in your HA serum exactly, it’s hard to answer this. However, my first impression if it’s a basic HA serum, is that no, the Salicylic would not dissolve.
Can we dissolve salicylic acid in glycerin?
It’s only partially soluble, so about 1.5% is what seems to work for me, but once I get to 2% it stays in a crystal.

I'm interested in using powdered salicylic acid to make a body acne bar soap. Would dissolving the salicylic acid be necessary or could I just suspend it in the soap mixture?
I would like to play with cold process soap eventually but my initial idea was just to meltdown an existing bar soap and add salicylic acid.
It will leave granules if not fully dissolved which could also cause some irritation when applied to the skin.
thank you so much teacher
