    Thanks for the video. I’m looking to build at least 1 hedgehog house for my newly acquired allotment. It would be really helpful if you could provide the measurements of your wooden house. Many thanks.

    I’d put a locking latch on the roof. Foxes are a smart predator and would have no problem figuring out how to open that lid.

    I have started to build one out of left over timber. How far off the ground should it be? Mine has 1 and half inch legs, which I was planning to add a slope to.

    We have some wood from a deck we removed. Would this be suitable? I am not sure if it was treated when new but we occasionally treated it with danish oil.

    We have a family of hogs in an old shed that’s due for removal due to it containing asbestos. Any tips as we don’t want to cause them any stress? There’s at least one adult and three hoglets.

    Hi! New subscriber here! I am also in the UK and set up a hedgehog house in my garden around the start of lockdown. I definitely have a resident but am not sure if I should clean the house out and add new bedding from time to time or will the hog(s) take care of that? Thank you :)

    • @HedgehogsHollow
      @HedgehogsHollow  3 года назад +2

      Thank you for subscribing, and welcome to the channel! Moe importantly, congratulations on your new resident!
      So cleaning out a house is definitely a topic I will discuss in a video within a couple of weeks. It is a good idea to clean out the house around twice a year - but only when you are absolutely sure it's empty. In the interim the hedgehogs will take care of things themselves. But generally at the end of their hibernation and after the nesting season - which would be around now, but as you have a resident, you are best to simply leave it be. You only really need a clean every 6 months or so and sometimes even less frequently depending on their activity, it need not be any more regular than than.

      @@HedgehogsHollow Thanks so much for replying - apologies for the delay. I look forward to your video on this. I have no idea how I could be sure the box is empty? I will keep watching your videos. Thank you :)

    • @HedgehogsHollow

      You;re absolutely right - knowing whether a house is in fact empty is really tricky, and you never want to make a mistake and possibly disturb a mum with hoglets.
      What you can do is place a small twig or leaf across the doorway - something that doesn't prevent the hedgehog gaining access, but something which will be obviously moved when a hedgehog passes by and enters - in my video on how to clean a hedgehog house (ruclips.net/video/uDnCb3G02y8/видео.html) I demonstrate this with one of the houses using a leaf.
      And always do this over a period of several days - possibly even a week to make sure there's no activity - don't just do it once.

      @@HedgehogsHollow - thats a great tip - thank you. I'll check out your other video. I love having the hogs around - its great to see them. @@smidgekat5296 It sounds like you are doing all the right things for them.
      I have recently posted a video showing the equipment I have and use for recording the hedgehogs. There are lots of available types and brands of cameras, but perhaps this will at least give you some useful tips and guidance for making a decision when you are going to buy a camera:

      Hi Kelvin,
      Yes, you are absolutely correct. This first video walk through did not have the level of detail that would be helpful, and hence I have created a second walkthrough which demonstrates the process step by step as I create a new hedgehog house, as well as provides a link for downloading the plans.
