- DVT, or Deep Vein Thrombosis, can be a very serious and life threatening situation. Many times DVTs happen when someone is very inactive from either a surgery or a long trip where they can’t get up and walk around. See Doctor Jo’s blog post about this at: www.askdoctorjo.com/content/de...
Some signs of a DVT are swelling in the leg or legs, redness in the leg, warm to the touch, and tenderness to touch. So here are some simple exercises you can do to help prevent a DVT.
All these exercises will be performed sitting down because most likely you will be in a plane or car seat doing these. The first one will be an ankle pump. Hold your foot slightly off the ground and pump your foot up and down, pointing and flexing the foot. You only need to do about 10-15 of each exercise, but make sure you are doing both sides. Do these about every 30 minutes to an hour.
Now with both feet flat on the ground, bring your heels up, and then come down and bring your toes up alternating back and forth. Do this about 10-15 times. Next take your knee, and bring it up towards the ceiling and then come back down. Now you’re getting your hip and knee moving. Repeat 10-15 times as well.
The last thing you want to do is cross your leg over the other, and massage the calf muscle. You don’t have to do any specific massage, just make sure you are getting the muscles moving and keeping the circulation flowing.

If the case is just below your knee, you can still do the knee and hip ones. Mainly, just make sure you are getting up frequently and movement around instead of just staying in one spot. Wiggling your toes several times a day should help too.
AskDoctorJo you also can get dvt from birth control! that’s what happened to me

Thanks for sharing your expertise 🙏😊 Are you promoting any compression stockings? I would like to support and purchase from your site. New subscriber 👍🤗
You're welcome, and thanks! I have reviewed a few I really like depending on what specifically you are looking for. You can find most of them in my product store through Amazon: www.amazon.com/shop/askdoctorjo
I have just recently turned 30 and I have had DVT for 5 years now and in them 5 years I have had 6 blood clots. The best advice I can give is stay active as much as possible preferably swim if you can and plenty of fluids to prevent blood clots. You can also wear made to fit stockings for the area that’s effective to improve blood flow. If you suspect you have one or your feeling pain in the suspected area and discolouration, take aspirin to thin your blood and seek medical help. They will most likely put you on blood thinning medication or if it’s more severe they will suggest surgery but surgery is not a 100% fix as it can come back.
Thank you very much for sharing your experience 😊
Were you able to fully reverse it? I'm 19 and I've had thrombosis in my left leg and genitals since I was 15. Is 4 years too late to *fully reverse it?
can't you be cured permanently without taking any more pills???

I have regular swelling of my feet, especially my left foot. In 2012 I suffered 2 strokes because of a brain tumour, and have been housebound since. I started getting swellings on my left leg, which my mum said were water, now one at the back leaks constantly and is extremely painful. To add to my stress because of my health I have been prioritised on my island to get my 1st vaccine dose next week (I'm 50) and I saw somewhere we're getting the Astrazenica vaccine, the one now causing blood clots in some people, I'm terrified.
@@alfredeinstein1742 not much change, I've had my two vaccinations but my left leg remains swollen take care

Excellent video, I try to do as much movement as Economy Class allows and will be adding the knee raises and calf massage.
+A.J. Vieira Thanks! Good luck!
I've had leg swelling (puffiness) since 2007 when I was in my early 20s I've flown planes several times, although the last time around I started panicking bcuase of chest tightness and lower back pressure when the plane was ascending/taking off.
I went to the Dr. a few times over the past years and he never really mentioned much, just to lose weight and gave me water pills. It hasn't done me harm (i.e. I work out a few times a week running and am pretty active).
I'm freaking out nowadays and don't want to go on the airplane to any trips because of my (minor) experience last time around (which might have just been an anxiety attack).
This video is great as I sit for 10-12 hours at a time without moving (office job) and will give these a try., especially in early mornings, since I always wake up with sweaty ankles.
I hope they help. Good luck!

I don't have DVT BUT do have chronic vein insufficiency disease. I had nearly 20 plus treatments which are extremely costly and three to five years later it appears as though I have had zero treatments. Supplements and herbs help as does my medical support stockings plus elevation of my legs at night. They are not fixes so am so grateful to have found these exercises to add to my walking. Not one time did any of my doctors who have performed the ablations give me exercises outside of walking regularly. SO...Thank you.
You're welcome. I hope they help.
thank you!

Dr Jo, Do you have any exercises to do post DVT in the arm? I was told I likely had a paget schroetter syndrome DVT in my right arm. I am very active, but do repetitive motion for my job. Thank you
Thank you!!!

Thanks a lot.🌹

Good excerice
Thanks.
I'm active gym enthusiast and I got a DVT by working out legs. No one is safe, a small clot segment made it to my right lung. I was on heparin for 5 days, and then switched to elliquis. They found a DVT on my left calf. No symptoms, just freak accident. I actually went in to get allergy medicine and staid for a PE and DVT I had no idea I had.
It can definitely happen to anyone. Glad you are okay.

@@AskDoctorJo doctors titled my condition as " small subsegmental pulmonary embolism" from your personal approach would you suggest therapy for longer than 3 months? I have an appointment with my hematologist tomorrow, I hope she can clear some answers. Thanks for your replies.
You're welcome. You will definitely need to ask your hematologist that, and she should be able to answer them for you. Unfortunately, I don't know since I can't evaluate you.
What if you have a cast. How are you supposed to do those exercises with the cast on the ankle and cab
Good video Dr Joe. This happen to me. I had a clot go to my lung. Very painful. they found it with a mri. Thanks for the info.
Thanks, and you're welcome! Hopefully you won't ever get one again.
no, now. I was told by my doc. that when flying. If I any stop overs to walk around as much as possible in the airports.
Definitely. Hopefully you can do some of these on the plane too.
I'll defiantly try
Generally, any movement will help, but these are easy to do while sitting and help keep the blood circulating.
That is good job
Thanks.
Please if your swollen leg has decreased and there is no longer pain in the leg does that mean you're cured?
if i had sustained injury on my left leg (upper surface area where calves muscles is beneath) and it's sometimes swollen, making both legs look different in shape/size and I'm like suffering for almost fourth year.
so am just hoping if I could get exercise routine tips that would help me get back my normal leg shape/size.
I’ve been noticing from working five to 10
Hrs a day, I’ve been having cramps in my outside thighs. I can’t really squat without struggling to stand back up. Could this be a sign of oncoming DVT? I’ve been taking taking taytulla for my iron deficiency anemia. So I wanted to ask.
Thank u ...may Allah bless u.
You're welcome, and thanks.
Thankyou for the tips. Do you think that exercise helps tje blood flow to the brain?
Believe it or not listening to music through head phones improves blood flow and brain activity
I have one really bad right now can I still do these exercise
Thank u so much mam
You're welcome.
So does walking regularly not get the blood flowing in ankles and legs?
I was just released from the hospital I have a small clot in my calf and my right lung.
What is best to do after you find out? What am I limited to, and not limited to. I've of course asked my doctors, I just feel like they weren't confident 100%. So, what are the can do's and do not's?

Hey Doc I used my sisters vibration plate a few times for short minutes and my bulging veins which I had already started giving me fits and hurting like crazy I had planned to get one but now I rethinking it will they eventually help these veins over time are make them worse and I should not invest in one
I already have a DVT in my calf thats left me bed ridden its so painful. Therefore, I'm not able to do those ankle pumps. Any other suggestions for my situation? Any video titles you know that can help me?
Thanks, will follow your lead. Was told I could have it but I question do I have 2 have all of the symptoms which I do not or just some of them? No nausea, fainting, coughing up blood, no pain, no warmth 2 the touch. take 3 baby aspirin 2 keep blood flowing, great if could get feedback. thanks 4 listening.
You're welcome. Unless the DVT has moved to a more serious area (heart or lungs), the only symptoms are usually a specific area being red, warm, tender to touch, and swollen, but you don't have to have all those symptoms. Did your doctor tell you? If the doctor thinks it's possible, it's very simple to find out with an ultrasound.
My legs are red splotchy Almost looks like a bad sun burn all around the calf area just above my ankle it looks like all broken up red rashy looking but dark will those exercises work if I do them and will redness go away I wish I could send a picture
Hi hope ur r fine.i have my left leg keep warm from time to time no pain no swelling no nothing although i work as a nurse but no pain just one leg and no pain.why is that?i take one tablet of liver fish oil a day plz give me the reason
Wow. Amazin!
Thanks!
Hmmm-hope you answer this: I’m 72 and I work on my feet 5-7 hrs with walking snot 1-2 mile a day thereabout 3-4 days a week. My leg on right for 2 weeks have been in excruciating spasmodic/ continual hard knitting cramps. I can’t bend my knee more than 20 degrees and the pain goes into calves top of foot and ankle and I can barely drive the 1 2/2 mile home without crying its so bad with brains feeling like they’re throbbing from knee and down my lower leg while also my knee and under thigh and knee aching so bad with horrid tight cramps. I’ve changed to good diet, more water electrolytes, more potassium and magnesium for 10 days but it never stops but eases up a little bit so I can sleep. As soon as my feet hit the floor it comescsurging back. Am going to my MD tomorrow in hopes he can help IRC’s end me to a vascular doctor. Suzy 12-22-19
Unfortunately, that could be a number of things. Hopefully your MD will be able to help.
Ma'am my dad is cancer patient, 54 year old, done with RCC nephrectomy 10-11 months ago, and now are on Tablet-sunitinib (chemotherapy) .
Right now suffering from IVC thrombosis.
Which excercises can you recommend for ivc thrombosis?????
Currently on - tablet - warfarin 5mg
Injection - Enoxaparin
I would suggest light exercise that doesn’t put to much strain on the body such as swimming or skipping. Food such as garlic and ginger are very good for keeping you blood clean and clear as well. People don’t always think about what they eat but it drastically helps when you know what you are looking for.
How often should a diabetic do these exercises on a 4 1/2 hour flight.

If you’ve got an established DVT will exercise propagate it?

sorry for delayed response you asked me Did you have an injury or was this just from over use? ,yeah you was right i think this happend of over use(rode bicycle for nearly two and half hours countinously) but unfortunately doctors on my location have no proper reason they even do not knowing or beliving this incedent, they always try to compremise me as this just pain due to over use and defecency they gave me pills for curing it.But am not full compremised with the results and still getting pain on knee mostly left one.. what would you suggest?

@AskDoctorJo i recently diagnosed with dvt in left leg. Is these exercises help me to reduce this problem?
In my experience staying active all day everyday helps. Try swimming if you can or skipping as this will help blood flow. Also food such as garlic and ginger are very good for keeping your blood clean and clear, food is worth looking into for preventing blood clots. Consider made to fit stocking for support as this will increase blood flow.
Any exercise for blood clots after iuv?
Maam can you explain how does hip flexion helps ?? Gastro soleus is already being activated earlier in previous exercises right??
Increased circulation helps prevent them, so any lower extremity exercise will help.

Also I have been having this slight cramp pain in left left leg nothing to painful, it’s not necessarily on the calf it self but on the side of the leg. It doesn’t hurt when I walk at all but when I stand somewhere for a certain period of time or I sit down for a certain period of time it starts hurting again. No swelling or anything in leg .
I have same problem now. How are you feeling now and what is the problem
,
@@chandu33133wow I forgot I even left a comment . Unfortunately I had a clot about a year ago & it went to my lungs & I had a pulmonary embolism . When I left comment 4 yrs ago probably was nothing at the time . But I did get one in 2023 like I just mentioned . Weird , maybe it was early signs I was gonna eventually get a Dvt
My question is this... if someone has undiagnosed DVT could these exercises be potentially dangerous? I only ask because I'm a web developer with 8+ hour days and I have been having tenderness on the underside of my right thigh. Doesn't appear to be swollen, just tender where my my leg would normal begin to hang off my office chair. Not to mention I had a bad habit of putting my left ankle over my right knee, adding even more pressure on the veins in my right leg. I suspect that DVT is a possibility so I have an appointment to see my doctor on the 10th. Worst case, if I do have DVT, could this possibly help force that clot from my leg to another, more undesirable, spot in my body? Would adding aspirin to my daily regimen possibly help combat DVT?
If you are worried you might have a DVT, I would hold off on the exercises until you find out for sure. Usually there is a lot of swelling, redness, and pain, so it doesn't sound like one, but it's best to find out for sure from the doctor before trying these. Good luck.
Thanks!🙏❤
You're welcome 😊
I have one problem when I was trying to touch my leg Straight I got a pain in my leg so please give me a solution
I have too. How is your leg pain now?
Lately I get stiff calf pains after only an hour of sitting at my desk, Does that sound more serious? What type of doctor should I see to rule out DVT? Thanks
Your general practitioner should be able to easily rule that out.
For some folks having a high platelet count can cause blood clots? I knew that sitting for long stretches can cause problems, but what about genetics and blood clots.
+TheVideogirl1952 Yes, that is an issue as well. These should help increase the circulation in general. Good luck.

Thank you for the video. I have a DVT in my left upper leg area. Would these exercises be for me? Also, I am pretty active in taking care of my lawn work 2x a week. I'm 62
You're welcome. As long as you have been cleared by your doctor for stretches and exercises, they should be fine.
Not sure why my other comment got deleted, but I simply asked what the root cause of these blot clots in legs if athletes and runners are getting them, too? Is it due to the ankles and calfs not getting enough circulation??
Unfortunately, there are many causes for blot clots. It's not just a circulation issue.
Dr. Jo, is this for everyone or just for people who have that condition where their blood 🩸 coagulates more readily than normal.
It's for everyone.
