    The problem with OSRS and most games nowadays is that the players have become so obsessed with the META that nobody just plays for fun anymore. Hence the death of minigames etc. Its all about max xp/gp per hour and less about the experience.

    While it might've been bad for the game at the time, Zulrah is in my opinion THE most important update of the history of OSRS. To me, Zulrah was the point where Jagex wanted OSRS to stop being in the shadow of RS2. Even if it's an easy boss by today's standards, without it being a stepping stone that proved to Jagex that we can handle challenge in our content, we wouldn't have raids, the inferno, nor any other content where Jagex tries to push the limits of their engine (see sepulcre)

    • @ColonelloRS

      @solarifle Год назад +2

      @@kylejoly577 True, but modern MMORPG design is pretty much built around pushing players into the end-game, and OSRS is no exception (How people were training melee skills back in actual 2007 seems crazy compared to NMZ strats). Bosses like Zulrah/Vorkath that are low barriers to entry, while being consistent profit without RNG are pretty much the best way to get people who are just starting to look into the end-game, which is why I say that it was bad for the game at the time. Up until CoX there really wasn't much worth doing anything else unless you enjoyed pet hunting, so by the time we got our first raid, we had at least 2 years worth of supply drops being dumpstered by almost every high level player.

Why not just have the staff and orbs, and give the BIS inquisitor gear to different bosses? I would like to see powerful items spread out a bit more. Just like how all the bis jewellery comes from 1 npc. The way gwd did it is truly the best way, because the split in styles and lore makes sense.

The only issue is bots but new world has used this system with great results as it allows new people to get reasonable gold. You could add a more natural way to break down gear also. Like breaking down armor just gives armor shards to upgrade/charge gear. This would let the economy raise the price on saturated items since they would be cheaper and everyone would buy them up.

    I remember back in the day you'd just log in, chop yews west of Catherby bank and just hung out there for hours being afk and having conversations with strangers and you'd have so much fun. When OSRS came out, that's exactly how it was for a good while, and pking was really active. Then this happened (what you explained in the video) and OSRS became something else entirely. Don't get me wrong, I still played the hell out of it and even maxed, but it was because before, I was the kind of player that did it all... lying back and afk skilling, doing some slayer, killing green drags, going to the mining guild so I could mine tons of coal to make steel bars for cash, but what really took the cake for me and was my favorite vice was Edgeville pking. Then all these updates started coming out and I was like hmm, what if I tried out PvMing? (I always saw PvMers as noobs back in the day and thought pking was where it's at. Anyway, I really enjoyed PvMing. I used to not like slayer but after I got into the late 70's to mid 80's, I really fell in love with it and PvMing was my new thing. It was still fun though because at the beginning, skilling was still an option and profitable, even if it wasn't quite as good as high lvl slay and pvming. Slowly but surely OSRS turned into either pvming.... or pvming. PKing wasn't the same cuz it was hard to find a steady stream of fights like before by just showing up at Edgeville on your cb lvl range's location, most skilling areas were prety deserted (like the almighty flax fields and the yew trees around it), and well it kinda lost it's original appeal. Idk how to put it without having a super long, complex and nuanced conversation about it, but it's bittersweet. I really miss the old essence and magic of it. It's a feeling we'll never be able to capture again. Flash2:wave: Selling iron knives 55ea---SomePlayer123

    It was honestly crazy that the meta for ironman was to kill like 10k zulrah if you wanted to max. This is unfortunately one of the issues we were going to face when we reset the servers to 07. We went from having no endgame bosses outside of GWD (which have terrible overall drops) to the first boss with a good farmable drop table. Zulrah did a good job of killing off alot of the boring content that makes players end up quitting the game.

  • @BioMasterZap

    Might be worth noting that the Spike was replaced by the Serp. The intent was one drop for each combat style. The fang working on the trident was also added in later blogs since the SotD was more PvP focused than PvM. Then there is the whole blowpipe speed thing which was technically polled at dart speed, but likely due to the CM who wrote the blog phrasing it poorly.
    For the drop table, I'd say players blame them a bit too much for the state of skilling. Even back in the day, bosses had drops like 100 Yew Logs but it wasn't an issue then. The bigger issue isn't that PvM drops skilling resources, but that PvM has gotten more endgame content with higher profit per hour while skilling has largely remained the same. There are far more non-combat skills than combat skills, yet there are a lot more combat updates and when we do see skilling updates, they tend to be new training methods, not new money makers. It is hard for skilling to keep up when they're getting minnows when PvM is getting raids. Some bosses like release zulrah did drop too much of certain resources to the point it hurt the markets, but a many skilling resources were already close to alch value so drop tables didn't devalue them; money makers just moved past what they could earn.

    • @grandcanyon2
      @grandcanyon2 Год назад +3

      They do bossing/raids because that has always been the best money maker since runescape classics. The thing is back then in rs classics and rs2 , players had worse stats and lvls and gear, now the player base is older and train better have better gear and stats so they can go in groups and kill monsters on avg faster and better. The avg combat lvl and non combat stats of osrs players is much higher then back then. Alot of people still skill, but now they skill to max out their account or to gain total levels. Before players mostly leveled up skills to make money to afford to lvl up another skill and so on and so on.
      Skills are still fun their not useless at all, its just that bossing/raids provide more money. I can half afk train at abby demons for a few hours a week and make 8-13 mil off of whips.Pking dying on osrs has to do with the mechanics changing over time and a more responsive servers with alot less delay which leads, to a high skill gap in pkers. OSrs pvp skill of entry is to high for most players, the only thing that will still be somewhat active is clan/team pking in the wilderness. Not to factor in jagex made mistake by making pvp worlds, the literally broke the pvp community into to many groups in different areas and locations, so people went to edgeville saw no more people and quit. Before there would be 500-600 people in front edgeville on most wilderness worlds with all lvls from lvl 3-90 then you would go up a little higher to wilderness 12 and you would see lvl 90s-120s right under the black knight castle.
      Now its just folks on pvp worlds trying to spec rush folks 15 levels lower then themselves.

    Osrs is nostalgic in f2p but a whole new game in members. It is a shame that skilling is basically a means to quest / do efficient pvm but by leaning heavier on the combat system, which is the most technically advanced part of the game, Jagex have been able to create exciting content that rivals modern games. I came back for the nostalgia, I've stayed for the new game!
    Also skilling bosses were a smart way of bringing some of the complexity in combat to skilling, however they are still often
    gather X, place it in B
    or
    gather X, transform to Y, place it in B for extra damage
    So I appreciate some of the new minigames the most as they can be slightly unique in mechanics such as giants foundry

    Getting resources from a rare drop makes Runescape more fun for me. I like player choice more than I enjoy mind numbing grinds. I like that I can either chase a rare drop of hundreds of noted buckets of Sand from a boss, or I can choose to run from a bank to a sandpit back and forth over and over, or I could mine sandstone in the desert and get my sand that way. CHOICE
    In fact, the idea of getting resource drops from bosses is what made some skillers step into pvm in the first place. And you can't deny that some Hardcore PVMers would look at a bank full of Resources saved from the months of bossing and decide to train their skills using them. We all know most PVMers and Stakers just used their max cash stack to buy skills anyways.
    Essentially the issue being raised is it makes the economy slightly more shit for non PVMers. The way I see it is it makes the game into a more unified experience. I got to experience more of the game Post Zulrah than I ever did pre-zulrah. There were more ways to get into skilling than the usual means.

    Part of the problem is that people think that "if only this skilling money maker was better, then I'd skill more!" when in reality, there's no way that extra 200k/hr is what's keeping people from cutting yew logs.
    More people want to boss than to skill, so to keep the economy's supply of skilling items from drying up, some of it needs to come from bosses.
    Was Zulrah too good on release? Absolutely. Is it too good now? Probably not.

    • @TheL0rd0fSpace
      @TheL0rd0fSpace Год назад +1

      @@tumblingdown8612 but you can do that!
      Check the skilling money making guides on the wiki:
      There are fishing, crafting, cooking, mining, fletching, herblore, smithing, thieving and magic skilling methods that crack 200k, and many which push 500k - 1m per hour.
      My point is that Zulrah, and other bosses which add skilling supplies into the economy, aren't "keeping you from skilling". You can still make great profit skilling if you want to. They're just a scapegoat for skillers to complain that their incredibly low effort methods aren't profitable enough.
      In addition, Zulrah actually *benefits* skillers, because she pushes down the price of base ingredients. Sure, Zulrah makes coal cheaper, which makes mining it worse, but that also makes smithing bars better! Zulrah makes magic logs cheaper, but that makes fletching magic longbows more profitable! This applies to almost everything on her drop table: Cheaper flax makes spinning bowstring better. Cheaper pure essence makes runecrafting better. Cheaper mahogany logs makes plank making better.

    The reason they had to make bosses like Zulrah drop so many skilling supplies is because Ironman became so popular and they had to give IM more effective ways to get materials as they couldn't purchase them.
    Ironman released in 2014 and Zulrah was the first boss monster that dropped tons of supplies, Zulrah released in 2015, others have followed but Zulrah was the first.
    From a business point of view, it was a no brainer, IM mode became so popular and it outweighed the negative of nuking skilling profits.

    A big point in skilling for resources, instead of PvM, is that people that need to PvM continue to drive the economies of the skillers who are bringing them resources, like food and potions, but if you can just PvM everything, you literally kill half the game's purpose?
    I started in 2005 and RS has always seemed to favor combat over skilling..
    Sometimes and update would make skilling be the best money maker, then PvM, and back and forth.
    Things change, but stay the same...
