I believe you hit all the right notes in this one. Yes, that last scene in The Crucible is one of my all time favourite Adam/Ben scenes too. I have trouble watching the actual episode (too much emotional pain on Adam’s part), but I routinely watch the last few minutes. Another great father/son moment between Ben and Adam is The Pressure when Ben talks to Adam about Adam’s relationship with Laura. It starts out rough…Adam’s sarcasm…but Ben persists and ultimately Adam tells him he was right. I agree with you 100% that Lorne Greene’s portrayal helps to make this show what it is…still beloved by millions over fifty years later. Good job! ❤
Yes you said it well. Ben loved all his three sons but each in a different way. But he expexted not the same from each of them. From Adam he expected to teach and protect his two brothers and to help Ben with the ponderosa bussiness. From Hoss he expexted to be the gobetween between Joe and Adam. And from Joe he expected to become an adult ( a cartwright)with the help of his two brothers. These expectations costs Adam his childhood and a brotherly relationship with Joe. Because Adam had often to step in for Ben for raising Joe ( and Hoss) . But one thing is for sure. The love between them is so beautifull. You see how strong is made the bond between them.
Great insight! I agree, Ben's love language was very different with each of his son's, but he very much still loved them all dearly. Now that you mention it, Ben was more affectionate with Joe and those are actually some of my favorite moments of the entire series is those scenes displaying their relationship. Yes, we do rarely see him be that affectionate with Hoss or Adam. I love that you brought up The Crucible because that is one of my favorite Adam episodes and that moment at the end is so powerful, I think in my mind, Ben saw the little boy in Adam again during that moment and so maybe Ben felt compelled to hold him in that moment. 🥺 And I agree, I have wanted to hug Hoss so many times, haha. 🥺😭 But a very good analysis and we can all agree, despite them wanting to kill each other at times, lol, the Cartwright's had a great love and respect for each other. ❤️ Also, I would have loved to see flashbacks of Joe's birth and him as a child as well, it would have been interesting.
I do agree that Ben uses different love languages with each boy, but his main one is physical touch. While yes, he hugs/embraces Joe the most, the love language of physical touch goes beyond just hugs and embraces. It's the shoulder slaps, the pats on the back, the shoulder squeezes etc. all of which Ben does frequently with each of his sons, and they do with each other. So, Ben may not embrace the older two as much, but he is always reaching out to touch them, and all of the boys are very accepting of this affection.
I wonder if Pa intuited that overt expressions of affection toward Adam would be demeaning or infantilizing of Adam, as their relationship - probably from Adam’s mid teens - was more as partners.
Thank you so much for this video you have got their characters spot on. I feel Adam was robbed of his childhood and .had to grow up quickly, but he was much loved and looked up to by his younger brothers , although he and Joe occasionally had a flash over which is probably normal between the oldest and youngest there was deep affection between them. I too would also have liked to have seen more episodes made of the boys when they were young leading to the loss of Marie. I do watch the series ‘Ponderosa’ which doesn’t always line up with Bonanza but is enjoyable and fill in some gaps.
❤ Ben Cartwright ❤
The best PA
Thank you so much for video ❤
