I too have watched Bonanza since l was around 10…l so had a childlike crush on Little Joe, which at the time seemed so decadent as he was so much older 🤭 but as l grew up still watching Bonanza l really found Adam irresistible. I have never moved on from the first six years and still watch them on RUclips from time to time and still love the concept of the family and the original cast. I do however enjoy watching the the series‘Ponderosa’ …this was never aired on British television so it was a great discovery to stumble across it on RUclips. It’s lovely to see the family depicted in the time before Bonanza when they were younger. Of course they are all different actors but l can relate to them. The actor who plays the young Adam is so handsome. Many thanks for all the work you do keeping Bonanza alive .
Yes, yes, yes!! Being a big Candy fan, I so appreciate this video. Joe and Hoss were my favorite of the Cartwright's right from the start, but Adam grew on me. Candy I loved right from the beginning and I think David Canary was a fine actor. That being said I don't really view Candy simply as a replacement for Adam, he was his own character with his own unique personality, not a copycat of Adam. I personally loved his sense of humor and his loyalty to the Cartwright's. I also agree that Adam would have liked Candy and might even respect him. It does make me sad Adam fans don't give the show a chance after season 6. In my opinion they're missing out on some great episodes. I'm a fan of the entire show, Adam, Candy, yes..even Jamie. Griff wasn't so bad either, honestly, lol. I do think the series creator and writers should have honored Pernell's request and allow him to get married and make occasional appearances. Heck, they should have allowed all the Cartwright's to marry, lol. I honestly don't think it would have hurt the show, it's the one complaint I have with the show. Give Ben some grandchildren, come on! Lol. Thank goodness for fanfiction. I look forward to your Jamie video because I feel fans are way too hard on him. ❤️ Oh, and my favorite Candy episode is The Stalker with Miss Beadle herself, Charlotte Stewart. But the Easter Bunny Crossing episode and that moment with Candy and Hoss in the bunny suit, that might be one of my favorite moments. 😂 Also Candy teasing Joe with reading Chicken Little in Pride of a Man made me fall in love with him too, haha. 🤣🤣 Star Crossed is another great one too! Candy got a taste of the "Cartwright curse" as they call it. 🙄😜 I hate that phrase by the way, lol. Okay, I'll stop now, I guess you can tell how much of a Candy gal I am, but I'm really a Joe gal, honestly, that's how I started. 😁😄
I absolutely love your enthusiasm! I won't say which, but a couple of things you said touch on future videos I have planned. I truly do think it was my problem and that of everyone still not giving him a chance that we compare the two men. It wasn't Candy/David's fault that Adam/Pernell left and he had a tough job coming in,but he hit a home run. I appreciate anyone who is a good friend of my C's and he goes above and beyond. As you said, he can be hilarious too. I think his loyalty vibes nicely with Joe who is fiercely loyal to his family and friends. He is a big sweetheart like Hoss too. And The Stalker is a fantastic episode I forgot to mention! Thanks so much for this thoughtful comment!
I just joined your channel about an hour ago, and I really appreciate your insights and Ponderosa perspectives. As a brother where each of my siblings each came from different mothers, and as a father who has 3 sons himself (but all from ONE wife) I was drawn to the Cartwrights INSTANTLY. As you surmised, the show does seem to split into two different directions: (WA-with Adam) and PA (post Adam.) For years, I felt disappointed if I came into the room just before the intro, the map burns, and I only saw three horses rather than four! Yet came to appreciate post-Adam episodes, while continuing to have a preference for the WITH Adam years. While recovering from heart surgery almost 20 years ago, I worked on a pet project that I'd always wanted to, but didn't have the time for: what happened when Hoss died between the end of Season 13 and "Forever?" What caused Hoss' death? How did the family come back together? Was Adam notified? I met online one of David Dortort's assistant (who actually named the ranch "Ponderosa") who remembered the cast well, and she honored me by reading my story and sharing her thoughts with me. Her email came through, and she said words that I will never forget: "Well, Brian, I hope you're happy...you made me cry!" If this is your final broadcast, that you'll pick things up in 2024! Great job, Bonanza Babe!
I have watched all the Bonanza episodes, but keep returning to the first six seasons when I want to re-watch a Bonanza episode. I tried to like Candy, but could never warm up to him. As someone from a different Bonanza centered channel pointed out, the first six seasons were more about the family. Later seasons were centered more on individual family members or other characters. Yes, Adam was missed. But it may have been more than Pernell Roberts' departure, which caused some people to stop watching later seasons.
I completely understand your position and I agree. I prefer the earlier seasons and it does feel like two different shows by a certain point. I think that's the way of thinking that helped me enjoy Candy for who he is though. When I could appreciate Candy while still loving Adam.
I tried i really tried if they hadnt give Adams colours to him and didnt let him sleep in the house maybe ...... maybe i would have watched it. I only watched after season six twice..... but it was different........ i missed the chemistry between the four Cartwright. The chemistry didn t come back with Candy. The influence of Adam on pa and his brothers were missed by me. Sometimes i tried to see an episode after season six but still............. not for me.
@josecorporaal6470 Well at least you tried. It took me years so you might change your mind. As I said in the video, I felt the same way about him having a room inside. No the chemistry isn't the same, but they did have chemistry, particularly him and Joe.
The interesting thing is, that, what they did in the later seasons, focusing on one character, was what they promised Pernell on the beginning of the show. They discovered the family oriented episodes worked better and changed to that. I don't really watch after season 6, but there are some good episodes, that's true. As for Candy. I never saw him as a replacement for Adam, but I never did warm up to him. It never made any sense that the foreman lived with the family in the house, no matter how befriended they are.
I preface this with I loved David Canary! I liked Candy but I did NOT like the way they used him to replace Adam which you could never do. Candy dressed like Adam, slept in the house (that was absurd) and sat in his chair at the dining room table. Nope! He was never going to replace Adam in my heart ❤️ And don’t even get me started on Jamie!
Have you ever seen "Home From The Sea?" If not, you won't be happy. I wasn't. They literally give Gilly Adam's black clothes, hat, and his horse. Now that gets me good. I feel like we come to associate Adam with that look more than the red shirt and black vest from earlier before the established costumes for the Cs and that's the one we see on Candy. At least, that's how it works in my mind. I see your point though. Save those Jamie thoughts! I can't wait to hear them for that video!
@@BonanzababeI have seen Home from the Sea and yes handing over Adam’s things bothered me. The only thing I did like about that episode were the mentions of Adam. When the time comes that you post the video about Jamie I’ll have to curb my nasty thoughts! Haha
I too was 10 when I started watching Bonanza…in 1959. Yes, I’m that old! Anyway, I started out a Joegal, so continued watching when Adam mysteriously disappeared in season 7. I have always liked Candy, but found my interest in the show waining and stopped watching long before the final season aired. Now I’m an Adamgal and really only watch up to season six. But, it’s not just about Adam, although I cannot bear watching the Cartwrights ride up sans Adam at the beginning of the show. Reading the comments here, I think I lost interest because the dynamics changed. The four of them, like the cast of The Mary Tyler Moore show, had a perfect chemistry that was lost when Pernell Roberts left.

David Canary was a great choice for Bonanza! Never had a problem with the character of Candy.
Agree!
