  • Are you looking to learn medical coding on your own? Well, you may be surprised how much that will still cost. To get a job in medical coding you need to be certified, which is a minimum of $399 for the online exam plus the cost of books and practice exams. I break down the options online that I think are the best bets.
    Note: Half the answers are not in the Step-by-Step books but you will NOT find a better book on learning medial coding!

Con's yeah there are days I wish that someone was easy to reach cause same days I stress about how this will come together. That said I'm almost there and will likely invest in prep for the exam.

    I'm doing the online course through the AAPC. I just finished the terminology course they gave me and now on the anatomy course. You are exactly right, it takes a lot of self-motivation. It actually wasn't too expensive after I spoke with someone from there, and I am from VERY humble beginnings, myself. Call them if anyone is interested. It's worth a shot. Does anyone know about the apprenticeship program if you are enrolled in the same program?

Curious if the AMA versions have the guidelines at the beginning of the chapters or if you can list which ones do and which ones do not? I don't have books yet, but I'd prefer to purchase ones that do. From what you've mentioned, that sounds like it would be much more useful to navigate. Thank you!

    • @ContempoCoding

      Most are looking just for the credentials but a lot of them also specify they want formal training as well. It also gives you more advantage over someone that just "passed the exam" without having much training because they took a crash course that prepped them for passing the exam. There's a lot of online schools now that will get you trained really well in a fair amount of time. I think my community college program was like 9 months starting from scratch with med term and then going up from there.

      Definitely the CPC. Very, very few employers are looking for the CMCS. If you're looking for a coding job they will require credentials either through AAPC (like the CPC) or through AHIMA (like the CCS or CCS-P).

    I have been a medical biller for 10+ yrs but never wanted to get certified untill now because of all the denials for coding I get on the denial report. I literally have to send these claims back to the coding department and have them recorded. Its gotten to the point i already know the correct code before I send it to them. Back in the day medical billing jobs were just that.. now I see so many medical billing jobs that want you to have coding certification as well. I just need the certification. What is your recommendation for my situation? And which cert would be best for my experience. Thanks

    • @ContempoCoding
      @ContempoCoding  3 года назад +3

      I would go with the CPC. Here's my suggestion -- go on AAPC.com and buy some of the practice exams and see how you do. If you are scoring 80% or higher and can finish with extra time, then you're good to go. Otherwise you might need some additional education.
      They also have a bundle that's the practice exams, exam fee, study guide, and a review class that might be right up your alley. www.aapc.com/training/practice-exams.aspx#cpc

      You should be able to use current year or one year prior. For example, in 2024 you should be able to use 2024 or 2023. This is on their official guidance. If your proctor did not abide by the guidance, you should contact AAPC directly.

      " What year's books should I use?
      You may choose to utilize books from the preceding year, the current year, or a combination or both; however, only one copy of each book is allowed.

    Recently I saw Coding Clarified is offering a course that is equivalent to 2 years experience internship. You complete 600 cases. Do companies like to see experience gained thru a educator? If so,is AAPC going to offer anything beyond one year? I would really like to have the 2 years trying to get my foot in the door. And you cannot take their internship if your courses were thru another company for the certification.

    • @ContempoCoding
      @ContempoCoding  4 года назад +5

      I'm not super familiar with Coding Clarified but I just checked out their website and I'm not super thrilled with their "About" statement. "Coding Clarified provides a self paced online medical coding course to prepare you to become a certified professional coder by taking the CPC exam. In just a few months, you’ll benefit from a stable and rewarding career that’s in high demand."
      I think stating that anyone can get a job in a few months is a bit too much hyperbole for my taste. Honestly, I'm skeptical. I would go through the AAPC, have the year taken off apprenticeship for going through the 80 contact hours and then going through their Practicode if your focus is getting through that requirement.

    • @Glisar1
      @Glisar1 4 года назад +2

      Contempo Coding your responses are always so fantastic and detailed. So just to clarify Practicode will remove the remaining one year after I do my course and pass CPC thru AAPC? I really prefer AAPC’s website and it just seems more structured. I agree that there seems to be a visible quality difference. Yes, I live where there are two large hospitals (Tallahassee) and all their job listings say “2 years”. This is my 2nd career so I have an AA, BS in Crim, and 2 master’s certifications in Florida Government and Emergency Management. I did 12 years in administrative law enforcement. I have tons of casework experience, not medical. I was a CNA and a phlebotomist for about 1.5 years when I was young. That is the only “medical” experience I have. It feels weird that I have soo many skills and education and I dont quality for even the low end jobs. Sorry!!! Long post!!! 🙌🏼🥰
