      Physics and FFB aside (which I don't have any quarrels with) this is my #1 reason for using iRacing and not the other games. (Yes I said game) The structure of it having practice, qual, and races on set schedules every hour or 2 means I know exactly what to race and when and that there will always be a full grid (unless it's anything over c class dirt road lol) so competition is never lacking because you're always racing people in your general skill range (more so in higher Strength Of Field races). I race with a lot of SCCA Competition Racers and they use it as a tool before competition weekends and 1 person even broke a class track record by a significant margin when they trained in iRacing at a track they've never driven in feal life before that weekend. Who really cars if it's the best or the worst all that I care about is if I'm having fun and if I am gaining skills and I believe both to be true.

    I think you missed talking about the absolutely biggest selling point for iRacing, at least as far as I am concerned, and that is the ranked racing combined with its vast player base.
    The fact that I can not only choose to join a ranked online race (almost) whenever it suits my schedule, but have that race be split into several servers based on rank so I'm MUCH more likely to end up racing someone around my skill level, is the only reason I keep paying for and playing iRacing.
    I find the sim itself to be as you say, passable to good in different aspects (tho few sims are as complete in terms of features for online racing, which you also didn't mention, stuff like towing, driver swaps, day/night cycle, player made liveries etc etc).
    As great as most other sims are, none of them are even close to offering the online racing experience that iRacing does, I wish this wasn't true as I'd love for them to have some competition on this bit, but as of yet, they just don't.

    iRacing like every Sim out there has some major issues, but overall it’s the best option we have for multiplayer and league racing.
    You have to remember they offer Road, Oval, Dirt Oval, RX/Off Road all on the same platform and all presented to a very consistent level.
    On the price thing... rF2 content is not cheap, there’s just less of it and I find it hard to justify given its meme levels of sliding.
    Most hobbies can get expensive... people are happy to spend lots of money on golf clubs, an electric buggy, then pay a club membership, and pay green fees on top of that... all to play the same 18 holes over and over again.
    For me... iRacing offers experiences I can’t get anywhere else. Expensive or not, it’s up to users to balance the costs Vs the enjoyment they get from it.

  • @balkntv

    You have hit quite a lot of issues with the sim right on but you missed one biggest advantage iracing has over every other sim and that is online play and userbase. This is what a lot of other ACC fans and rf2 fans can only dream of having. To really get a proper "hook" on iracing you need to play it for few months online and go through the ranks and understand what the online community really offers. This is one of the biggest reasons why iracing is still a benchmark and until other sims start following suit with online structure such as this, iracing will remain on top.

    • @staenker1983

      I'd even go so far to ask a nasty question: Are all the people p[l]aying iracing stupid and not smart enough/too fanboy to play other sims? I don't know exact numbers but in order to fill all the iracing races you need a certain amount of regular racers and it might just be that the other sims, that are supposedly so much better than iracing, just have less of regular racers. Which would be a sign, that either iracing is better than it's getting credit for or those regular iracers are all stupid/blind fanboys...

    • @CaptainSpork1337
      @CaptainSpork1337 2 года назад +5

      This. There is no ladder to climb in other sims. To get good racing you have to join leagues, and 99.99% of leagues are nowhere close to the kind of skill required to win a top split race in iRacing during peak hours. The only exceptions are the leagues that attract the major sim racing eSports teams and offer prizes/broadcasts, those are the only thing at a higher level than public iRacing lobbies.
      Also disagree about the graphics, to me iRacing looks a hell of a lot better than everything apart from ACC (GT3 only) and the pCARS engine games (crap physics). I do agree with the FFB criticism though. The 60Hz signal is absurdly outdated, and you shouldn't have to use a fancy reconstruction filter (or irFFB) to get a decent FFB signal.

    • @marvinater7
      @marvinater7 2 года назад

      @@balkntv To add on to this, when you start racing a certain series at a certain time slot, you start noticing other drivers that are doing the same. For me iracing isn't the best sim for driving cars, but it has the best community and system to create great racing anytime of day at any competition level. All of this as well before you even consider the iracing specials events and leagues. The community aspect I think is the best thing about iracing.
      Also you don't need to spend 1k on the game, you buy what you need and yeah sure its not cheap but its is no where near 1k and to suggest and show that price is a bit laughable. You would spend 1.5k and only use about 100 dollars worth of content. There is buying guides to make the game cheaper and as your progress through the game the cost of the game diminishes. Is it more expensive then other sims yes, vastly more expensive no.

  • @jcchaconjr

    Not to sound biased (although most who read this will think it is), but:
    Yellow - likely from the sunlight model, which is, you guessed it, yellow. TBH iRacing used to be rather flat, but when real-time day/night transitions were introduced, I think this yellow stuff was introduced. With the white color balance changed you edited, I wonder how the sunrise/sunset transitions would look?
    The Sliiiide - iRacing veteran pro tip; if you find yourself in the infamous never ending slide, just simultaneously mash the throttle and brake momentarily. No one knows why it works, but it does… and believe me - you don’t know what “iceRacing” is like unless you drove the sim circa 2014 or older. Getting on the grass was unrecoverable! At least now, going off track doesn’t necessarily mean the end of your race.
    FFB - it’s easy to overlook, but a lot of people don’t realize that many favored a homebrew FFB plug-in for the original rFactor. rFactor 2’s FFB was much better out of the box - why? Because ISI just licensed the plug-in from the original author and made it part of the gMotor engine. Anyway, the FFB in iRacing does a decent job for me. Granted, I don’t have a DD wheel to be snobby about it, but I find that it does a good job of differentiating cars with Power steering over cars without.
    Graphics engine - sure, it’s dated - but considering that I have an older system, I can still enjoy iRacing. ACC is an absolute slide show for me… plus, I don’t know if they fixed it, but the fact that you have to use NVidia Surround to enjoy Triple screens in ACC is a deal-breaker for me… I’ve had WAY too many issues over the years with Surround to put up with it anymore, and unlike other sims, ACC doesn’t allow for the same kind of “full Windows desktop” hacks due to Unreal.
    Competition - for what it is, iRacing offers the best hands down competition, particularly in official series races, pitting you with relatively matched drivers. It’s not perfect, but I’ve always liked it.
    Price - no argument here, it’s expensive - BUT, you don’t have to buy it all at once, and with the licensing system, you really don’t have to buy too much at once to get through a given season at a new license level… but DO take advantage of those discounts for multi-item purchases.
    Anyway, not a criticism of your review - in all honesty, I thought it was fair.

    • @chrisb62
      @chrisb62 2 года назад

      Hey just so you know. You don't need Nvidia surround for triple monitor in acc. I run an ultra wide with two 16:9s on the sides so Nvidia surround doesn't work for me.
      Just turn on windowed mode. Stretch it across. Turn on the triple monitor option and adjust all the settings for your setup. Works great.
      Tho I'd imagine if it's a slide show for you with a single monitor. Triple probably wont help haha

    • @jcchaconjr
      @jcchaconjr 2 года назад

      @@chrisb62 Hmm, good to know, and thanks for the info - as of about a year or so ago, people had asked about not using Surround for triple screens in their support forums. Kunos cited limitations in Unreal Engine that did not allow for proper utilization of large desktop sizes for “full desktop” sized Windowed mode, which is the typical workaround to use triple screens in rFactor and iRacing without Surround via their config files. Seems like either Epic updated Unreal to support what they needed, or they figured something out with the engine as is.
      And yeah, I use triple screens (it’s the only way to drive!)… And since I was using single monitor mode to play ACC, it was still a slide show in anything other than single car practice. I wouldn’t want to think how bad it would be with all 3 monitors, lol.

You missed the biggest component though which is the online racing and set events and championships and the depth that it has with the iRating and Safety rating system. That you can jump in to any practice session with various people to check your pace then jump in to highly populated races in almost any series at any time of the day anywhere in the world. That’s where iRacing is set apart. All i need for my experience is people to race against who due to the rules of the iRating and safety rating system for the most the racing is fair and clean. I was shocked the the VRS DFP could feel identical to a Logitech 920; but that's exactly what it was like.

    Ermin, some facts you should know about iracing:
    - since the pandemic introduced a lot of influx of pro drivers coming into iracing, there were a whole lot of updates introduced, being the tyre models and aero models completely overhauled. Before it really was ice racing.
    -Iracing FFB doesn’t have any canned effects, is purely physics based, and it’s aim is to reproduce the exact feelings you would have over a real car steering columns wheel. That’s why there aren’t a lot of extra useful effects such as in rf2 or ACC.
    - all of the pro drivers have actually said that iracing is harder than IRL, there’s less grip that there would be IRL, but it is pretty close. A pro Porsche cup driver said that the las pcup update made the car feeling 90% similar than the real Porsche cup car.
    All in all iracing has some flaws, and in the end it’s all about personal tastes, luckily we have a lot of sims now a days, but in regards to online competition, trying to reproduce a real experiencie, there’s no competition to iracing.
    That being said I hope you give iracing a chance, as when you start competing online here, you realize how good iracing really is.

      @@Skippy-id9yt Reversing in VR if you don't have a sturdy inner ear will absolutely fuck you up. Definitely stay away from that until you've gotten yourself used to VR.
      I'm a VR-only racer. What I found (and you'll see this advice repeated around the internet) is that the best way to get used to VR is to not push yourself right off the bat. The second you start to feel odd, get the headset off and stabilize your inner ear. Then, once you're good to go, the headset can go back on. It's a process for sure, it won't happen immediately, and how quickly you get used to VR will depend on your unique inner ear, but the above processed worked wonders for me, and now VR is seamless.
      FWIW, my first title in VR was Dirt Rally. Do not be like me! I damn near threw up from all the bouncing. To be honest, while I can go around Sebring for an hour no problem in VR, a long rally stage can really test my inner ear. So, YMMV.
      Another word of advice is to play with camera settings like horizon lock, in-car movement, etc. Personally, I prefer to lock my in-game head to the car, because it prevents an unconscious conflict between seeing me experience G-forces within the car while not actually feeling any. But people are different, and some people live by at least a bit of in-car movement. Play around.

    There are no alien drivers in your official races in my skill level. So you have the chance to win races and not getting frustrated getting overlapped in a long race. Kerbs and brakes on acc feels weird. Acc in gt3 also have a weird feeling of translating in curb like, you are sliding but neither over or under steering. Just getting pushed out of the track. On gt4 i understand it could happen but not gt3. And yeah iracing best part is multiplayer experience physic is great but not perfect. Iceracing was meant to slap on grass/gravel grip you have compare to r3e or acc i ve drive on. But the « passenger slide » is an irl thing that happen a lot! Its physics and no return point is a thing.
      Sound is ok on ir but i miss the immersion of acc tho. R3e is good but really irregular. Some cars doesn’t sound at all like irl.
      None are perfect. But the only one with true multiplayer a lot of content and variety is iracing. Some may criticise ir and sr, i feel like ir should be class related and not only kind of race related. Gt4/gt3/gte/lmp should have different ir. As they dont drive the same. And r3e is okay ish with its new system, acc is far back and public lobby are meh. And rf2 i just got it and still havent got the time to drive it. But its brand new. And ams2 have no competitive and ranking mp.
      Ignoring this part in simracing is ignoring essence. Racing against ia isn’t real simracing as only human behavior really represent some simulation of racing. :)

    As a very long time iRacing member and one of people bugging you about your refusal to try iRacing in a few of your comments sections, I'm very happy to see that you finally tried it and I agree with a large portion of your feedback. In regards to the driving feel near the limit, that has been by far the biggest physics improvement in the sim over the last few years. They finally started getting it right when they released the 911 Cup car and it's only been getting better since. Still far from perfect, but also far from what it used to be. As for the parts I disagree on, here are the two main ones:
    Graphics - I know iRacing isn't always the most photogenic sim, but I actually really like the clean, sharp look of the game. Other games like ACC seem to get too caught up in post processing effects that cause the game to have a muddy look. I've never been able to get ACC to look the way I want it to. A lot of games tend to overcompensate with their graphical effects, much like how you showed the overcompensation of car dynamics from the external camera (which I loved that you brought that up, as it's my favorite part of iRacing's presentation). I think iRacing looks the most natural of the bunch. I never have noticed the yellow tint though...I have a bad feeling that now it's gonna be one of those "things that have been seen cannot be unseen" situations now XD
    The other part I take a little issue with is the final conclusion that included the phrase "...sans the multiplayer experience..." I certainly understand that it's tough to review such a robust system, especially when having to tiptoe around the iRacing TOS, but I also think it's a little unfair to chuck 95% of a game's value proposition out the window in the summary. The multiplayer system is what makes the game what it is; the netcode, the ranking, the matchmaking, the special events, etc. As I've said in previous comments on your channel, until another game comes anywhere close to what iRacing offers here, I find it incredibly hard to either praise or criticize the pricing model compared to other sims that simply don't offer the same things. With that said, it is most certainly not for an average sim racer with only a passing interest and/or a light wallet.
    One thing that didn't get touched on (at least not directly) was the sheer variety of racing disciplines - Asphalt road, dirt road, asphalt oval, dirt oval, stadium trucks etc. There is not a single other sim on the market that offers all of that, so they literally have whole market segments to themselves at the moment. As someone who enjoys asphalt road and both dirt and asphalt oval, I love having one place to do all of that. Also, I can't tell you the number of times I've seen/heard about people who have never had an interest in a certain type of racing, but tried it in iRacing and ended up really enjoying it, and are now big fans of racing series that they had never considered before.
    Overall, I really enjoyed the video and I'm glad you finally came around to trying it. Aside from the couple of things I just mentioned, I largely agree with your feedback. You did a good job pointing out your preconceived notions and how the reality reflected or debunked them. Nice work!

      You couldn’t say it better, there are also a few things I have said in a comment here, that I think ermin should know to better understand iracing, such as the ffb, which tries to represent only what you would feel in real life, no canned effects, only 100% physics based ffb. Hence not having that much info compared to rf2. But something iracing does great, is giving a lot of ffb in the LFE( buttkickers and bass shakers). You would be surprised about how much more info you can get through LFE ffb than through the wheel. Any other sim doesn’t have this option, it’s all third party’s soft like simhub, and it is very bad in comparison with LFE

    A few other things that are great in iRacing:
    The updates are endless and insane if you compare them to other games
    As long as you are not driving in daylight the graphics aren't actually that bad
    The team racing is unparalleled
    If you like to not only do road racing this is an amazing sim. If you only do oval, rx and/or oval dirt I'd say this is your best option.
    Everything for some reason has a really "premium" feel. Everything is smooth sailing compared to others (namely rF2). For some reason it manages to make really difficult to understand things, really simple and I really love that idea. It's just really smart.
    It's marketed as a racing school rather than a game.
    The dev team
    And last but not least obviously the multiplayer system. This is what iRacing is about and I do think you have to give it a shot to really know why it's so good😄
    Some things I don't like:
    The prize😖 Although I do justify it by designing liveries for people it still shouldn't be this expensive
    The community in some parts
    The yellow graphics at daylight
    Some tracks have outdated graphics
    The FFB in most cars (lmp2 for example is much better than normal)
    The American mentality. Although sometimes this is also a + I do get irritated sometimes. It's a bit of a positive and a negative.
    I think overall it would be the best game out there if it was a bit less pricy. I always seem to want to go back in iRacing and to be perfectly honest I don't know why. To me it's just really refreshing compared to other sims that felt "heavy" and made me really tired. That said it isn't the king at the moment

      60hz compares really bad with 1000hz or what ever the wheel can do. Even to 120Hz it compares badly. But in order to fill 1khz with REAL FFB signals, you actually have to generate/SIMULATE the tires and springs and dampers and chassis flex and aero 1000 times a second. And even though modern computers are really awesome and cool and stuff, that is simply impossible with single CPU consumer level AMD/Intel boards/chips. So big BUMMER, something is applying a 'Filter' to the signal, be it the FFB Wheelbase, FFB Wheel Software or the sim itself. Granted, iracing should generate a signal which is providing a good feeling with modern days direct drive wheels(I am using the simucube 2 pro and it feels very sandy without filters on 60Hz iracing ffb) but it's not really required since it wouldn't do faster/better than the solutions built into the wheels. (The wheel controllers that apply those filters are actually faster/introducing less latency than the software solutions. Which means, if iracing is interpolating the simulation data so that a 1khz ffb signal can be generated, it might just be slower ;) )

    • @JamieHamelSmith
      @JamieHamelSmith 2 года назад

      Some of us iRacers don't use the FFB directly. For instance, I have an Accuforce wheelbase that uses the Sim Commander software to set up profiles, strength, etc. It has built in filtering and added effects derived from telemetry. So some of the "seat of the pants" forces actually get mixed back in for some folks using different wheel software.
      If I boot up iRacing without Sim Commander, my wheelbase feels COMPLETELY different in how it translates the FFB.
