- Creating a worldwide hit is almost impossible. Creating a follow up that's even better is practically unheard of. This is what Game Freak faced when they began work on a sequel to pokemon red and blue. The entire was playing and loving their first games, but could the sequels, Gold and Silver, live up to the hype? More importantly, could Game Freak even get the games out? This is the story of that journey, the story of Pokemon Gold and Silver.

I’m into my 30’s now and I still find myself playing through the older games at least once per year. It really does remind me of better times.
I'm also in my 30's and can relate so much. You phrased it perfectly: Playing older games, or even watching only videos of them, keeps reminding us of better and carefree times when we were kids. Nostalgia is such an unbelievably strong emotion, that I cannot even really describe how I feel playing or watching these old games like Pokémon Gold and Silver. It's an odd mix of happiness and sadness at the same time.
I remember playing with my friends on the playground. How carefree. I miss it and will try and find some joy like that again.
I switched to iPhone not knowing there isn’t an emulator so this might be the first year not doing this in a while
32 here i still play the old ones and the new ones lol the new ones aren't as good but there still fun and it just takes me to my childhood when i didnt have to worry about anything ahh good times
Probably twice a year, I manage to mostly play, each, SMB3, SMW, Doom 93, Red, and Silver.
Im 35 years old, I remember reserving Silver at my local kmart back then. Is it just me or does gold and silver feel like the perfect pokemon game? The fact you could go back to Kanto and battle Red was mind blowing to me! It actually felt like you were in an adventure, no other Pokemon game has left such an impression on me. Gen 1 and Gen 2 are by far the best games in the franchise
Yup just when you think it's over you can go bk to the original area was awesome
The games peaked with gold&silver.. better than red&blue and nothing after is better imo.
I remember my neighbor got a JP copy, and we didn't know how to catch anything because of the bag pockets in the menu :P You're right though, they were indeed perfect, and really immersed you in the world. (Although it was a little bit easy when you went to Kanto, which is always a disappointment..)
thats becuase the are , crystal too
I LOVE crystal
Pokémon gen 2 will be forever be the best gen. 2 regions in one. day/night cycle. I may be blinded by nostalgia and preference, but there's something just so charming and peaceful about Gen 2.
I was in the first grade when red/blue were released. During recess, I remember everyone surrounding the kids that were lucky enough to have the game at release. It quickly became what we did and everyone got a copy. I remember getting red version first and loving every second of it!
By the time Gold and Silver were out, it was full blown Pokemania! Everyone knew what it was. The TGC had infested school rooms and playgrounds across America. It was such a defining piece of our childhood.
Those were the days.
I am 30 around the same age as you. I remember those days.
They banned cards and gameboys at my school outside of lunch and recess because it’s all anyone did was trade Pokémon cards and play Pokémon. It was a phenomenon
Great documentary. The nostalgia kills me. 28 years now. You show my childhood there 😪
That's the goal!
the adventures were fun
Great doc. Pokemon Silver might be my all-time favorite.
Dang, you are insanely underrated. You put a lot of effort into your content. Great job on your videos, I love watching them
I recently found the channel. Enjoying it, so doing what I can to get others to look at it.
I keep watching videos of the origin of Pokemon and looking at those concept drawings and feeling enamored with all of it. It's just such a special thing to see how their process went from idea to final product.
Pokémon is bigger than ever, Gold & Silver were far from the decline.
something was lost, authenticity for profit.
These games released after my 5th birthday and I remember getting Silver version for Christmas. I was already pretty good at reading, but I remember getting lost at certain points, and even in the beginning I didn't find Mr. Pokemon's house until my Cyndaquil was already level 10 from fighting wild Pokemon. I ended up not playing it for a while and got Yellow version, then after beating Yellow, I went back to finish the game, only to be met with one of the most epic moments in my gaming life when I crossed over into Kanto and that guy greets you with the music playing. Still one of the greatest generations of Pokemon, and HG/SS is arguably the best game in the mainline series (aside from B2W2). Man, this was truly my childhood along with Ruby and Sapphire.
Had to literally stop vid and leave a comment. I feel like my entire childhood makes sense now lol . Great vid 👍🏿
I remember the first time I fought red. I didn’t even know who he was at the time and I was so under leveled. That battle was so extreme I literally had chills and the music was so intense. Gold & Silver will forever be my favorite Pokémon games ever.
I’m so happy to have been a part of this. I grew up playing gold on the school bus and sharing info among my friends in a time when I didn’t even own a computer yet. It was awesome!!
Pokémon has millions of our childlike hearts still. And im 32 years old haha I’ll always love Pokémon.
Lived through the entire pokemania back when it all happened in real time. I was 7, so I think 3rd grade? I got my copy of Pokémon red with my gameboy pocket. The crazy the franchise had at school was crazy. We even drew some special designs for a TIME magazine contest one day lol. You couldn’t do anywhere without seeing Pokémon.
I remember getting silver version the week it came out, I went on a Sunday after church. I remember I ran to GameStop with two $20 bills crumpled in my pocket 😂. The “electronics boutique” (there’s another throwback for you lol) employee smiled and gave me the last copy they had. I think I also got a poster and some plush or toy it came with if you pre ordered but they gave it to me anyways. It was a truly crazy time, I put so many hours into this game. The nostalgia is hitting rn! Great video
Ahhh soooooooooooo many memories... I only have good memories of the red/blue and gold/silver days. Looking back I think my whole life revolved around Pokémon during those years. I remember especially well one day I read somewhere that we could get mew at a shopping center far away from my home. Our car had broken down, so my parents couldn't give me a ride. Me and a friend set out to take the train there, having never been in the city before, nor taken much public transportation on our own. It Felt like an epic journey just to get there. And getting mew? After trying forever to find the damn thing by the truck on S.S anne.. Man. we felt like kings..
I completely agree growing up with the remakes and playing them and then way later playing the originals as well
This was SO good!! Thank you for taking the time to make this - I loved it :)
I really liked your story about how your younger self thought the screen-flickering from poison meant you'd somehow glitched the game. When I got my first pokemon game (Blue version) I couldn't figure out how to get out of the house and cried until my brother-in-law figured it out for me. Oh to be young!
I remeber sneaking my gameboy past my bedtime so that I could catch the pokemon that only came out at night.
This was a superb blend of diligent research, clear timelines, and great voice over! On top of that, you gave yourself time to talk about your own experiences with the games. Brilliant and very well done!!
Pokemon crystal was my first ever game i got and i still have it till this day, the anime made me like pokemon the game made me love pokemon❤️
Thank you for this, this unseen footage and the not commonly known facts were awesome. Generation defining moments in time. Glad we were here for it!
Gen 2 is one of my favorites. We got two regions in one games, a day/night cycle, and great towns.
Johto will always be my favorite region! Tho I love them all in their own ways! It was just so exciting as a kid when new Pokemon were revealed and the games were on Game Boy Color 💗
man, I still call Johto my home in the pokemon world too. I would love to revisit it again some day
Great vid, specially by not having cringe comedy and forcing people to subs like many do (to the point of begging), Kudos. U got a new Sub.
Great video, i hope we get a Let's Go Gold & Silver versions for the Switch
No pls
I’d love that
Thank you for this great gem man! Even though I grew up with gen 1, it‘s the second gen that took it to another whole new level! Legendary game
Recently read a book about this subject and you absolutely blew it away. Incredible detail went into this video, I hope you’re proud of it because I am loving it all these years later.
What's the books title?
After everything that happend in the last few years, I dont know what to think about the Pokémon series anymore. The amount of hatred I had to witness was horrible, I dont want to experience something like that every again. Pokémon WAS a good series, that shaped the childhood of so many people worldwide. But not anymore. Not anymore. And we should gradually accept this. Everything has an end. And we should remember Pokémon the way it once was. Thats the least we can do.
I love gen 2!! I grew up watching the Johto anime and I brought the dvds of the show everywhere, when I was finally old enough to get a game controller my mom got me a ds with Pokémon soul silver on it (: johto will forever have a special place in my heart
I later also went back to play silver on the 3ds (: I loved it
I started playing pokemon with pokemon red. I was obsessed from day 1. Then I remember gold and silver coming out and my mom bought me gold and my gma got me silver and I couldn't believe the games got better. Its some of the best memories I have. I still replay those games to this day. Never gets old
TBH by Pokemon Crystal you have maybe 95% of the durable features in modern Pokemon games.
It's weird mentioning Iwata but not mentioning the fact that he was the one who compressed the file size down so much that they were able to include Kanto as post game content.
He does at the 14:00 min mark
I've started playing during generation 1, on late 1999, early 2000, untill today.
All generations have their ups and downs, but none comes as close as gen 2 for being the best.
Great video! I'm glad I still own my Pokemon Gold & Silver game cartridges 🙏🏿
I let a friend borrow my copy of silver and never got it back. Still bummed about it 20 years later
Just hit 30 this year and I just repurchased silver, gold, blue and yellow.
My brother's had sold my original copies in 99 and 2000
I remember playing this for hours on end
My first pokemon (and gameboy) game was Blue back in 1998. I absolutely loved the game and played countless hours!
I still have the cartridge and gameboy, and my progress is still saved! I enjoy visiting my old team of 6 from time to time 😁
Now I still play pokemon every so often mostly on emulators.
Thank you for providing this amazing content and bringing back great memories 😁
I remember getting gold and a bicycle from toy R us when the game’s first game out.
It was three weeks before I rode that bike lol
My biggest issue is the long term battery that saved game data wasn't as good as Gen 1 pokemon. Therefore after years of beating it, I returned to find all the level 100 pokemon I had trained lost.
The Gen 1 titles still had pokemon saved in the same time frame.
Pokémon blue was the first video game I ever played as a kid. Having lived through and grown up with Pokémon from the very beginning and still being a fan at 31 I can say there’s never been anything like the feeling we had when Pokémon first came out, the first two gens were so special and Pokémon was everywhere in a way that they haven’t been since. I’m still a fan but the series feels so soulless compared to how everything surrounding it felt in the late 90s early 2000s. I still remember playing through silver for the first time as a kid and just being completely absorbed by it not understanding how they’d managed to make anything that was better than blue
I still have my original Gold 🥰 (with dead save battery) first Pokémon game ever played, and second own personal game after FF7.
I still remember playing a rom in 2000 where dark types were called evil types, and red and blue were called Ash and Gary
I can’t believe I’m just now seeing this, this was amazingly done. You definitely earned a new subscriber
I have to say I like the style of the demo. Wish they would of kept that but I will also say that gen 2 is still my favorite. pokemon gold, silver and crystal have a special place in my heart.
With 3d graphics, they'll never use that kind of style, but in the ds games, they could have used the graphics of the gen 1 games for something like a nightmare caused by darkrai or something.
Great videos, thanks for this
I caught a shiny Mewtwo in Pokemon fire red. Greatest catch of my life
"November 21, 1999.... LIP SMACK"
Hell yeah dude FUCK doing another take
This video made me smile so much.... thank you
here in Ecuador they didnt even bring those games, i bought everything from the x box and the gamecube, but pokemon stuff you would never even get to see, so Im so happy nowdays playing this classic games, that i didnt even knew existed back when i was a teen, the same with the animes, now im enjoying it, watching them on cartoon network was never reliable, anyway i grew up with pokemon loving it, specially the first seasons
Great vid! Ty for sharing this story! ❤
Great video! For like no reason I nearly cried a few times.
Nostalgia is a powerful thing. I think it’s pretty great that a few KB of code were able to create so many pleasant memories for so many people.
Everyone’s experience with these games is a little different, but it’s still a common thread for all of us who had a chance to play during those formative years.
Reckon I’ll be 80 and still tearing up every time I hear Goldenrod’s tune start playing.
3:03 “Gamefreak’s reputation as a developer…”
How the times have changed
Faaaactsssss
nice job dude. Loving to watch those videos.
27 years old and i genuinely believe this is the best pokémon game. i remember i learned the rare candy trick😂 til this day i can pick it up and play like it’s my first time
7yr old me had the pokemon clothes, cards, games, vhs tapes, and figures. Good times. I think I still have the 8 episode with Sandshrew and Ash first battle loss.
Amazing video essay again... love your content dude. Keep it coming.
I was bought Pokemon Yellow as my first game, then I got into the anime, card game and have been into the series ever since. My next game was Gold Version and you're right, they are incredible games. My parents never bought me RSE but my friend who had got it for Christmas didn't like his Ruby version so sneakily gave it to me.
I remember going to Walmart before school started on release day and I got silver and my sister got gold. We loved them!
Great video bud. But to be fair Crystal is pokemon's only GBC game G/S are Gameboy games. Technically DX games, like the black cartridges or Donkey Kong land. That's why they play on gameboy as well.
maybe the best generation
Still to this day i play pokemon lol im 32 now but i was 8 when it first came out
Its just when i play it takes me back to my childhood i have the emulators on my phone and play when im bored
Generation 2 Pokemon was peak
I remember when i first got pokemon silver back in 2001 when it first released in Europe... 4 years old, going to dinner with my dad and some friends of his, friend's son didn't want the clear purple gba and pokemon silver so it was given to me... i remember my utter sense of wonder at the game and the fact consoles were portable, all while trying to see the screen under the patio lights and picking totodile as my starter... ah, good times 😩
Crystal is the game that left me with best memories although I have played every single game the one I enjoyed & love the most are Soul Silver & Heart Gold. No matter how old I get I’ll keep playing the games because it genuinely brings joy to my life. Plus I get to teach my nephews that constantly ask me questions lol
Only at 1:00 and seems like an interesting video but anyone else come here thinking it was a summary of the storyline? 😂😂😂
The ending speech made me cry, subbed for sure!
It's Sujimori, you're pronouncing it as Sugimori. Two completely different names
Gold and Silver were ofc also released on the old gameboy. Most people in my area stopped playing pokemon with release of advance.
I was a little bit late when I got my very very very first Pokemon ever. Pokemon Soul Silver and Heart Gold (Yes both, japanese version) in the early 2010s. But I can still relate to the OG's profound feeling of getting their very first Pokemon game (Red, Blue, Green, Yellow).
Soul silver is still my favorite of all time.
Just want to chime in and say, given the extremely troubled production this entry had, alongside it being the follow up to an original entry that was a cultural phenomenon, alongside it still turning out great at the end, Gold and Silver are basically this franchise's equivalent to Halo 2. ;)
Awe man, Gen 2 was my first Pokemon game ever! Leaving Littleroot Town and picking up the egg from Mr. Pokemon will always be engraved in to my memory. Then Game Freak made Heartgold and Soulsilver, damn what a blast to the past! RIP New Game Freak, Gen 9 SUCKS!
Imagine Game Freak rushing and releasing a badly polished game! Impossible!!
I'm still disappointed some cards never left Japan... Some of the beta pokemon looked potential to be in these games... And most of all this was gonna be the finale of pokemon. But crazy to believe in twenty five years and counting more and more pokemon are introduced...
This was great to watch
Blue was the first Pokémon game I played, but Silver is I think when I got serious about the series. It was the first game I bought a strategy guide for (which I still have!). I also properly became a gamer in my own right (rather than just watching my brother play) thanks to the N64 and games like Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Snap, and Pokémon Puzzle League. I played Silver on an emulator though, because I didn't have a Game Boy (not sure why I never thought to ask for one for my birthday or Christmas, or save up for one). Thankfully, the Virtual Console release has allowed me to replay Silver properly, as well as play Gold and Crystal for the first time. (I did play SoulSilver too though).
Nintendo and game freak need to learn from this, they used to delay releases to get the games just right, but now their goal is to keep pumping out a new game every year and it’s finally caught up to them with Scarlet & Violet, though they still got the sales so they likely never learned the lesson… personally I didn’t buy it because of the issues but I got a switch after so I didn’t have a chance to buy it upon release.
If I had a dollar for every retrospective video that started with a date.
We were all taught in school about hooks I see.
Hope to see more content dude! V knowledgeable and you have a good voice for vids dude 🖤
Thanks for the nostalgia video!
In my early teens I played all the titles from japanese roms before they even hit the US. It was one of the things that got me into programming and reverse engineering, there was a huge scene around translating Japanese roms! Whats funny is there would be multiple versions of say Pokémon Yellow with various % complete in the title, ironically being fan translated in parallel with actual localization, and then the US version would release and people would give up translating 🤣so i dont think any version ever got a 100% English fan translation other than Green!
I had an active part in doing the Crystal translation! I even spent like $85 USD at the time to get a Japanese copy of Crystal off eBay before it ever came out. I'm shocked you found all that info about the cell phone link cable, that was one of the anticipated features that were axed from the US version 😭 But i remember getting to play with the slightly different Pokémon center in the Japanese version, just with no cable for myself :/
"This is the last version some people played". Sadly, yup. After Crystal, I started High School, didn't play Ruby or Silver because a. I'd lost my GBA and didn't replace it, and b. was just getting older and into different things. (I think i definitely still had my GBA when ruby/sapphire came out but wasn't interested)
this is a great video
Finally, someone who agrees that Jhoto had the best soundtrack :
Was the corruption issue not international? It was rare for us in NZ to get a copy of Silver or Crystal that would keep the saved data.
Nothing will beat the first two generations. I love Pokemon, but won't play past the third gen, and that is for the gameplay. Gen 3 doesn't have as great Pokemon as the first two, but it is still fun. I have been uninterested since gen 4, but love that I still have my older games and emulators.
Also, Crystal was my favorite from gen 2!
I know the remakes will be updated to be in that 3D look, but I wish they would have the added gameplay but with the 2D look and the 8bit music unless they let you get the old games on Switch one day.
greatest documentary ever.
It's A Very Good Documentary But You Keep Saying Pokuhmon It's PokEmon That Dash On It Means That The E Is Emphasized (Not Mad Just Educating)
so it's Pok-eh-mon, like in spanish
@@HausOfSpike Yes
Nope, the “dash” over the E is called an “accent” and tells you how to pronounce it. The “emphasis” is definitely on the first syllable whether you say “PO-kuh-mon” and “PO-kay-mon”. The “correct” pronunciation, considering the accented E and the way Japanese speakers say it, is probably Po-kay-mon” with each syllable about equally emphasized, however “PO-kuh-mon” is allllll over lots of official English content including the anime from the very first episode and the very first time Ash says it (and countless more times after that).
I think both pronunciations are fine. Don’t worry about it too much.
@@GovSchnitzel Someone told me months ago, thank you but I still hate Poke-UH-mon (the pronunciation not Pokémon itself I love it).
Totodile greatest pokemon of all time
I got my first pokemon game in 2005. It was pokemon silver I got at the pawn shop my parents used. After that I got sapphire at blockbuster lmao
None of the games since gold and silver were very memorable, except X and Y.
I played Platinum, black 1 and 2, which were solid titles, but I don't really remember anything profound about them. Still good titles, just nothing new worth mentioning. I was down with x and y's 3D graphics, and the 3 vs 3 restaurant battles finally set those titles apart.
Great video!!! I enjoyed the watching!
I love the ability to go from Johto back to Kanto the most.
cool videos. i know this guy said he played these back in the day, but he did mention also that his first game was ruby. i hope he was actually there for gen 1 and 2 and he's not just talking out his rear end.
Hoping they do a remake of this of some sort on the switch
In 2007 my granny got me a gbc and pokemon g&s at a yardsale for less than 10 bucks, it was the only handheld I had at the time and I had so much fun with it. There wasn't a single area of the game I didn't explore and when I looked up cheats for it the only thing I could find was gs cheats so I'd just mash random buttons hoping it was the correct code
Silver was my favorite one. I started with yellow on my slim yellow gb
I bought a gbc with pokemon yellow from a garage sale for $1 back when I was 6 years old
Lovely video mage a like and a sub
Is Owen Wilson narrating this?
We need an updated Gold and Silver on the Switch
Silver was the best. Lugia had me hooked
I started with yellow, but silver will always be my favorite.
