  • Nowadays NASCAR on NBC is the favorite broadcast partner for the majority of racing fans. With such great moments and great progress with NASCAR it was odd though to many why they broke it off with NASCAR after the 2006 season. Today we look back, at the reasons they were good, the reasons they were bad, and everything in between 2001 and 2006. This is why NASCAR on NBC failed the first time.

    NBC was solid from 2001-2004 but the commercials, the decline of broadcast quality after 2004, and the Dateline race baiting incident gave NBC a bad reputation. NBC has mostly repaired its reputation with NASCAR since 2015 thanks to its broadcasts but there are still some big problems with NBC that FOX haters fail to point out.

      I believe the biggest, is not showing more races on its own channel. Too many races are shown on USA, I don’t understand why they show more races not on it’s own network. But this is NBC we’re talking about, a network that shows one MLB game on its own channel then puts everything else on Peacock. Then on top of that, they won’t even simulcast any NASCAR race on USA too Peacock. Their announcing is absolutely horrid, Jeff Burton yells way too much, and Earnhardt Jr. isn’t much better either, Letard is okay, but likes to repeat himself over and over and over again. It’s a broadcast that I don’t look forward too.

    Correction: NBC broadcasted the 1999 and 2000 Homestead races probably because they had a deal with the track.

      Yeah, prior to 2001 the tracks picked their broadcasters

    • @josephbettano2569
      @josephbettano2569 Год назад +2

      Yes they did. NBC aired the Homestead race originally from 1999-2006. The 1999 and 2000 Homestead races was of course the only race NBC would air during those years since those years still saw NASCAR's TV contracts negotiated individually by each track, and Homestead was probably the only track NBC could get a contract with. I think this was another motivator for NASCAR shifting its TV rights away from the tracks to NASCAR itself under centralized deals. They probably felt it was BS that NBC got to air only one race and probably wanted more races for the networks. Of course the 2001-2006 Homestead races aired on NBC as part of the centralized deal where it was one of 20 races to air on either NBC or TNT. Then of course under the 2007-2014 contract, the Homestead race aired on ABC from 2007-2009 then 2010-2014 on ESPN with the race returning to NBC in 2015 then it aired briefly on Fox in 2020 and 2021 before yet again returning to NBC in 2022.

    I had sort of drifted away from NASCAR during NBC's first stint covering the sport, but my most striking memory of that era came before any car had turned a wheel on the network in 2001. NBC broke into its NBA broadcast (Lakers vs. somebody) with the news Dale Earnhardt Sr. was dead. In comparison with FOX, who broadcast that Daytona 500 but made no on-air announcement (until, I think, FSN's National Sports Report;; confirmation of his death came after the telecast ended), it was a classy, respectful move.

    I remember preferring Fox over NBC at the time, probably because of the tragedy at Daytona that they went through, but also because I learned a lot from DW & Larry Mac (I was young and new). In retrospect, both teams were excellent. There will never be a better era for motorsports TV coverage. Afterwards, it seemed as though criticism of (or even questioning) NASCAR's decisions was highly discouraged, if not forbidden.
    I also found Bill Weber irritating as a play by play man, but in the years that followed I discovered worse alternatives like Adam Alexander, Marty Ried, and Vince Welch. Bill was a great pitlane reporter and prerace host, but while not great in the booth, I prefer him over the 3 I just named.

    NBC didn't want NASCAR outside of the Daytona 500 for 2006 anyway. There were rumors that after NBC lost the package for 2007-2014, the network went to NASCAR for permission to sell their non-Daytona 500 races to TNT (who were continuing on), but NASCAR essentially told them to pound sand.

    I think a huge reason for NBC chasing NASCAR coverage in the late 90s and early 2000s was because NBC stopped doing the NFL in 1998 as a result of losing the AFC leg of the NFL to CBS. CBS had regained NFL coverage after a 4-year hiatus as a result of losing the NFC TV rights to Fox in 1994. I think NBC went after NASCAR for counterprogramming to fill the Sunday afternoon timeslots where they were no longer doing football. They probably chose NASCAR as it was the second-biggest thing in the country at the time and was possibly looking at rivaling football. NBC probably chose not to go after NASCAR for the 2007-2014 contract probably because they decided to pursue NFL coverage once again after acquiring broadcast rights to Sunday Night Football from ESPN for the 2006 NFL season. This actually created a conflict in the fall of 2006 where the post-race of some NBC races in September-November of 2006 had to be shifted to CNBC if the NASCAR race on NBC overlapped with the pre-game show for NBC's Sunday Night Football coverage. What NBC did with Sunday Night Football of course eventually made Sunday Night Football the most-watched program in America. Then of course NBC chose to reacquire NASCAR in 2015 while still keeping Sunday Night Football. I think the goal ratings-wise with NASCAR in 2015 was to increase NASCAR ratings by using it as a lead-in to Sunday Night Football. All this to say basically the centralized NASCAR deals and NFL broadcast deals went hand-in-hand.

    • @justinturley7071
      @justinturley7071 Год назад

      Yep. If you remember, NBC used to have College Football on a full time basis, but CBS/ABC bid on those conferences and won, and NBC bid on doing every Norte Dame Home Game, since 1991, but without the NFL, Norte Dame was all they had, so NASCAR just felt right on their station, and Notre Dame games were good lead in’s to NASCAR coverage on Saturday Nights. The 2005 game between Notre Dame vs USC overlapped, so NBC allowed NASCAR to postpone the race for 14 minutes until the football game was over, and as soon as the football game ended, they immediately switched it to NASCAR and the green flag flew.

      @@justinturley7071 To add about the Charlotte fall race, it was probably considered landmark when the fall Charlotte race was moved from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night in 2003 that the race remained on NBC instead of going to TNT. In 2001 and 2002, there were 5 night races: the Coca-Cola 600, the Daytona summer race, both Richmond races, and the Bristol night race. The Coca-Cola 600 and the Daytona summer race both aired on network television (the Coca-Cola 600 on FOX, the Daytona summer race on NBC in 2001 and FOX in 2002) while the other three aired on cable. NBC retaining coverage of the fall Charlotte race even with its shift to Saturday nights signified primetime time slots were becoming lucrative for races broadcast on network television. In 2004, when Fontana gained a second race on Labor Day weekend, that race would be broadcast on NBC on network television. In 2005, Phoenix added a second race as a night race in the spring coinciding with the track's installment of lights. That race aired on FOX on network television. In 2005 also, Darlington was cut to one race with its lone race being shifted to Mother's Day weekend and becoming a night race also broadcasted on FOX. Like I said, night racing was becoming lucrative for over-the-air, which is why the new night races started during the mid-2000s were put network television instead of cable.

    NBC round 2 has been much better. I was always a “FOX is the best” guy. Especially during the SPEED channel days since FOX owned that. Ever since SPEED channel fell, FOX coverage took a plummet. And ever since NBC came back in 2015, their coverage towers FOX. NBC right now is way better than FOX.

    • @nascarman14
      @nascarman14 Год назад

      Also, NBC’s graphics are very visually appealing. FOX has gotten better in the last couple years with their new graphics package. But those stupid animated characters they use for the athletes are awful. Even other sports FOX broadcast people complain about it. FOX graphics are terrible.

    The added cost of these various streaming platforms is problematic for me. No more 'live' viewing. Only YT after the fact.
    For this fan, watching the xfinity series live is something I desire nearly as much as the Cup series.
    Way out here in Idaho, I just take what is available, and not behind additional pay walls.

    3:17 except NASCAR was and is actually good, F1 ain't racing it's an engineering sport, the actual "races" are just parades of hyper aero sensitive cars and almost 0 mechanical failures to liven things up.

      Agreed! The aspect of the F1 cars being utterly reliable takes away the suspense [of mechanical failures] with the 'event' [note I don't use the term 'race'] in the final laps.

    *Here's the truth regarding why the first version of why the original NASCAR on NBC era failed:*
    A. For some reason NASCAR on FOX was more popular, which I *never* understood. I always thought NBC/TNT was eons better in every way. And you can tell because of how stupid people would attack the 3 main announcers (Name calling & saying they suck & stuff; Basically things they aren't). Obviously people now know just how valuable Allen Bestwick really is, & compared to Mike Joy now.
    B. The theory of NBC/TNT having "too many commercials". Both networks had this problem, but FOX way more. But of course that was ignored for the longest time. It wasn't until the last couple years people realize FOX is the bad one in terms of commercials.
    C. The music change. A broadcasts momentum & mood can change drasitcally. Unfortunately it was a bad move for NBC to go from "Fuel" to... whatever that other music was. That music change was not a good one.
    D. The Bestwick/Weber lead announcer swap. That one really hurt NBC. Fact of the matter was Bill Weber was not lead announcer material. NBC for some reason thought Weber was good enough to give him a try. That unfortunately was the final nail in the coffin for NBC's original tenure.

      Allen missed 1 race after his injury, the Talledega race, he returned the week later. It was actually Turner who got Bill Weber in the booth and wanted to fire Allen, but NBC didn’t, so it was due to NBC, that Allen stayed, although as a pit reporter.
