What Happened To NASCAR on TNT?

- The NASCAR Cup Series has seen many television and broadcasting partners come and go, and one of the oddest of these in hindsight was the Turner Sports provided coverage of NASCAR on TNT. There was plenty that many look back on fondly as well as plenty that fans look back on with a cringe face. So today we are going to look back at the history of NASCAR on TNT from 2001 through its final year of 2014. So, what happened to NASCAR on TNT?

What was your favorite NASCAR on TNT memory?
Kyle Petty colorful rant at Sonoma 2007
So many too choose from dale jr snap his winless streak at Michigan so many others if I can remember
Do you think TNT will ever come back to NASCAR?
Anytime, hearing Benny was great!
AC/DC TNT song and I think this song is from AC/DC Live in 1991 and it’s a headbanger!
I wonder what could’ve been if Dale Sr. heard about NBC and TNT airing NASCAR races? What would the TV audience numbers would be like if he was alive today? He said in his last interview with Fox in the 2001 Daytona 500 “A little wind today. A little exciting. I think it’s going to be some exciting racing. You’re gonna see something you probably had never seen on Fox.” with that smirk... and that still gives me chills knowing that’s his last but sometimes I wish it wasn’t his last interview...
Some details were missing in regard to Bestwick's replacement.
Bestwick was injured during a (charity?) hockey match prior to the 2004 Fall Talladega race, leaving Weber to replace him in 2004 for two races. TNT executives weren't too happy about Bestwick's absence and thus led to his demotion to being a pit reporter following the season. Bestwick wasn't too pleased to the point that despite TNT re-upping the rights, he moved on to ESPN where while he started out as a pit reporter, moved back into the booth in 2011.
Your right
Wow that’s BS
Geez that had to hurt for Bestwick losing the lap by lap gig
All I remember from 07-14 TNT NASCAR was just Commercials, Commercials and more Commercials. Plus having a very mid coverage.
Which Kentucky race was it where Adam plugged KFC after one commercial then they went to another commercial
@@coreypayne1208 I think that was Fox at Talladega with David Reagan 34 KFC Go Cup
So fox now? 😆
They had wide open coverage
They had race coverage while they were broadcast on TNT?
Bruh NASCAR on TNT actually felt like summer to me when I was younger. I hope they come back soon I actually loved them
Same here but Fox and NBC doing it all is just bland.
2025 says hi.
And personally I think the booth they had from 2008-2010 was the best.
Ralph Shaheen who is a very underrated play by play commentator. Wally Dallebbach even though at times he got on my nerves he was still worthy. And Kyle Petty who I actually think is a great analyst and have been a fan of for years because of his no BS attitude and he’s very knowledgeable
Shaheen does Supercross play by play and is phenomenal at it. I think his energy level matches that a little better than it does NASCAR
What TNT did with Wide Open Coverage was brilliant, and should've been adopted by FOX, ESPN/ABC, and NBC for every single race telecast those network did and are still doing.
TNT's Bristol night races were entertaining since they would list everything that happened during with the drivers' issues and anger
It still doesn't make sense Michigan and Bristol races where in TNT. NBC literally broadcasted a Saturday night Charlotte race for years while Fox Broadcasted all Michigan spring races until 2006.
Definetly
At Watkins Glen, Marcos Ambrose gave the broadcast booth some Vegemite sandwiches. The reactions by Larry Mac and Kyle Petty were priceless.
Michigan June 2012. The race where Dale broke his 4 year winless streak
All time favorite memory the finish of the 2009 Coke Zero 400! Kyle Busch turns himself off the front bumper of Tony Stewart’s car trying to block.
Wally Dallenbach and Kyle Petty’s commentary for that finish is forever ingrained in my mind. “Now he may get turned for mirror driving, but he’s going to be mirror driving.”
I just remember the “OH THERE HE GOES!” line.
My favorite one was the one where Jeff Gordon and Steve Letarte predicted the rain perfectly at a Pocono race and Kyle Petty said he had to retire because he couldn’t compete against that.
TNT 2001-2006: Awesome
TNT 2007-2009: A step down, but still good
TNT 2010-2013: Meh
TNT 2014: Pure dogshit
Honestly, my biggest memory of NASCAR on TNT is how pathetically phoned in that final year felt. Audio issues at least once every race and bare mininum analysis. It made the races a chore to sit through, and the goodbye felt more like a good riddance.
Agreed. Spot on.
Actually TNT 2007-2014: Thats incredible

Ralph Sheheen was very underrated in the booth. He was apart of the NASCAR broadcasting world for a long long time with CBS and SPEED before his time with TNT. I met him in Daytona in July 2010 in the infield and he was very friendly. Asking my cousin and myself who we think would win and stuff and signed a hat I had there with me. Wish he could of stayed in NASCAR. Could still happen in the future because he still does broadcasting for SuperCross motorcycle racing now.
Yes I’ve always said Ralph Shaheen is super underrated
I think Ralph Sheheen also works in the booth for the NASCAR Modifieds...
@@Mister_Matt_X nope he doesn't. Ralph Sheheen was let go by NBC before the 2022 Monster Energy Supercross season.
I agree
My favorite NASCAR on TNT moment was the 2002 Sharpie 500. So many wrecks and tempers flaring.. Plus, Jeff Gordon bumping Rusty Wallace to win and end his endless streak was amazing
Wally Dallenbach was a great broadcaster! Much better than most working today, including Jr. and Burton.
On the part about Wide Open Coverage, that wasn't the first time Turner did something like that.
Believe it or not, Turner was the one who originated the modern day Side by Side commercial break at the 2000 Charlotte Fall race on TBS (they called it at the time "No Brakes Coverage"... they were going for the Wordplay) the experiment carried over to the 2000 Homestead event on NBC, and was to be implemented for 2001, but advertisers were the ones who said no... at least at the rates NBC/TNT need to charge to break even on their coverage.
Man if only TNT Sports kept NASCAR, with NBA popularity Inside the NBA along side NHL now along with MLB (with TBS), we could have had "Inside the lane" show post race with the humor insight and laid backness of TNT's NASCAR Coverage close to the speed network. I love the wide open coverage on TNT Daytona race as the no commercial breaks, we need these type of races for marquee events
Showtime had Inside NASCAR which ran from 2010-2012! The show featured uncensored radio chatter during the race highlights!
What happened to NASCAR on TNT? The answer here is pretty simple. It's coverage was overlooked by Fox, who were still the great NASCAR TV powerhouse during that time, and ESPN, whose coverage was not loved until Allen Bestwick became the play by play guy over there.
The on air talent were pretty solid. Allen Bestwick was one of the best play by play announcers ever. Bill Weber was not the greatest broadcaster, but he wasn't awful. Later Adam Alexander took over, and he was fine there, but he wasn't a good announcer until he got the Xfinity Series play by play gig for Fox. Wally Dallenbach Jr. was very knowledgeable when it came to his analysis. Benny Parsons was, well, Benny Parsons. Kyle Petty wasn't the best, but he did have a good sense of knowledge and understanding.
The Coke Zero 400 TV broadcasts that TNT did were outstanding. You can watch the commercials while not missing any of the action on the track. I wish more NASCAR TV broadcasts were like this.
Say what you want about Ralph Sheheen, but that 2009 Coke Zero 400 final lap call actually makes more sense when you give it a listen. "Kyle Busch in the wall! Here comes Stewart to the checkered flag!" As a Tony Stewart fan, I also want to point out that finish is my 2nd favorite Tony Stewart win ever, after the 2011 Ford 400.
Replace Larry Mac with Michael Waltrip, and people still would be crazy over that magic trick! Turner Sports, you should have saved that for the postrace show! Granted, people would get bored over their least favorite driver dominating a race, but still. You deserved better! However, I need to point out the fact that when the booth were having fun talking about their ties, the race was under caution, not under the green flag.
My favourite moment has to be the 2004 Sirius at the Glen. Fantastic race watching Ron Fellows charge from the back to 2nd and then hearing Allen Bestwick mispronounce Fellows' hometown of Mississauga, Ontario
My favorite NASCAR on TNT moment was basically the one I remembered back then in the 2009 Coke Zero 400 (Formerly the Pepsi 400), where Tony Stewart turned Kyle Busch for his win at Daytona. It was a fond memory that I have that had been a great moment in NASCAR's history. I was about 7 at the time this aired on TNT, and seeing that moment on this video just gives me life again to where I was a kid growing up watching NASCAR.
Wide. Open. Coverage.
Yes, sometimes the "in-house" ads were goofy but dang it, TNT showed the world that you can in fact have a broadcast with less interruptions from the racing. I continue to this day to refer back to that time when talking about commercials during races.
Nascar on TNT was my favorite time of nascar they had the dopest broadcast and commercials and everything about the channel theme fit so well.
True!
When Benny Parson was yelling for Jimmie Johnson not to come back on the track @ Talladega while he was spinning on the front stretch in 2003..! Walley D responded to Benny: "I don't think Jimmie has much of a choice!" LOL! Jimmie was leading the race until Dale Jr and Michael W hit JJ and sent him on a LONG epic wild slide ride. I just love hearing Benny saying that phrase..! And, when Jeff Gordon beat up Jeff Gordon at Texas 2009 on the back stretch. LOL!
The only good thing about 2007-2014 NASCAR on TNT was the it was in the summer and it felt unique. It was fine at first, but it became not-so good later down the road.
I’ll admit, I do miss NASCAR on TNT. But I do not miss the commercials and the outdated number fonts lol
@Travis Glanton The Tower Enthusiast back in the early 2010s, they kept using the old number fonts that doesn’t match with drivers and teams at the time
Reading up on Bill Weber, supposedly he's now an illusionist, WTF?
LoL 😅 he's underrated I think. 😅
2007 Firecracker 400, Jamie beating Kyle to line. Actually saw the finish.
2009 Firecracker 400, Kyle turning himself off Smoke's nose. Both were Awesome
Ryan Newman Fact: He only qualified last once in cup.
Where and when?
Rocket Man 🚀🚀🚀🚀
In the 1980's they would broadcast at least one race from NBC ABC CBS and TBS. Before 1990's ESPN got it all. Now it's USA and Fox.
They moved Bestwick because him and Wally didn't get along with each other. I remember them actually getting into a bit of an argument in the booth on a few occasions. That being said, I loved having Petty in the booth. It was nice to have someone who would tell it like it is.
They seemed to have a good relationship. They always joked around with each other.
The older races before 2000, I enjoyed it more. Commentary was goof. They had fewer commercials back then.🔥
NBC / TNT we're always my favourite broadcast. Until Alan stepped down for Bill Webber. But memories for my the 2004 Sharpie 500 & the 2005 Daytona Pepsi 400. A great rain delay coverage. Plus in Australia here it started at 9am in the morning and ended at 3pm in the afternoon it was fantastic.
NASCAR on TNT to me was the official start of summer vacation as a elementary and middle school student
I Absolutely Enjoyed Watching NASCAR on TNT Over The Years All Thanks To The Commentators Allen Bestwick, Benny Parsons, And Wally Dallenbach. But When Their Contract Ended In 2014, I Was Disappointed Because I Wish They Would Renew Their New TV Deal But They Didn't. However I'm Glad That NASCAR Returned To NBC In 2015.
TBS And TNT Need To Sign A New TV Deal To Air Non-NASCAR Racing Similar To What CBS Did With The Camping World SRX Series.
Maybe in the 2025 tv deal Nascar the first or second or entire but im not sure how this work on a tv deal with an A or B package.
So ironically with what happened with Bill Weber last time anyone heard about him he's currently working as a magician for a hotel in Florida so I guess the magician gag went full circle.
I will never forget the 2009 Coke Zero 400 (was it still Pepsi at the time?)... cant remember... but it was when Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch were battling for the win... and when Tony turned Kyle... the booth went nuts... mainly Ralph... but I was just getting into collecting the 1:64 diecasts (I have upwards of 75-80 now...) but I had my 2008-09 CoT diecasts and I recreated that moment... and plenty more... I always emulated DW, Mike Joy, and Larry Mac... but the TNT boys had/have a special place in my heart too!!! RIP to an awesome era of our childhoods!!!!!! Cheers to another great vid, Ice. Keep it up brotha!
Bill Weber gets disliked because he allegedly had a big ego behind the scenes and besides Benny Parsons didn't have a good relationship with the rest of the crew (Look at "Close Matt's Mic." and the incident that got him fired before New Hampshire). With that said, he was absolutely an A+ pit reporter and pre-race guy.
Yeah what a night and day comparison. I thought Bill Weber was better than an more compassionate but nah almost like he wanted a cult of personality.
I never understood why TNT was hated by the nascar community. I became a fan of the sport in 2010 so I never saw the blunders of '08.
Still though I thought they did a solid job during their run.
I really liked their graphics package they had back in the day. Looks a lot better than what we have today. To be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if Turner came back because of the new direction of the new ownership group. I honestly would prefer them over ESPN if ESPN gets too political and uses NASCAR to spread propaganda.
With the mess WBD is in I doubt that's happening
Me too it would be either them making fun of NASCAR and its fans or nothing but Bubba Wallace coverage.
the announcing crew was awesome
I always thought Wally was a good announcer. I will always remember the 2007 Daytona night race, when Jamie barely beat Kyle. TNT had a great call.
Ironically enough, this reminds me of RUclips interrupting videos at pivotal moments with stupid ads.
Nascar on TNT oh those was the days I remember that 4th of July race at daytona when Tony Stewart wreck Kyle busch. The Dale jr win at Michigan etc
Nascar on TNT is one of my favorite times in Nascar
Favorite TNT moment was 2009 Coke Zero 400 finish and 2010 Coke Zero 400 big wreck that wrecked 26 cars
All star race to wilkesboro next year!!!
i miss the intro it always gets me pumped for the race though i will say NBC's 2022 intro captures the same magic
Yep but I believe NBC's 2002 intro should make a return. They used a really good song before Fuel and Fire came about.
I actually vividly remember the Daytona 4th of July crash with Tony turning Kyle Busch. I was going crazy
The closing montage just makes me want to go watch the end of ESPN's Atlanta 2000 broadcast lol
NASCAR is very likely to return to TNT/Turner Sports in 2025 in my view for one major reason, they currently do not have any live sports on the weekend from mid June (when the NBA/NHL playoffs end)-early October (when the MLB playoffs begin) due to TBS switching their weekly MLB game from Sunday afternoons to Tuesday nights. The Turner networks really struggle to attract viewers in this area because all they show are movies that people have seen before & Law & Order reruns. Adding NASCAR along with a few other sports (ex: MLS soccer) would boost ratings. If this happens, I would hope that Turner would do what they did with the NHL when they got it from NBC & hire the majority of the current NASCAR on NBC crew for Turner's NASCAR broadcasts. Come 2025, it will likely be Fox getting the first half of the season as it is currently & Turner (with TNT & TBS switching off on who airs races, especially if MLS is added to Turner Sports portfolio) airing the second half including the regular season finale & the playoffs.

Today November 29, 2023. NASCAR announces the new 7-year TV deal 2025-2031 including NASCAR on TNT is back for 5 races starting in 2025.
Who's here after the Broadcast live new deal in 2025 announcement? The NASCAR on TNT is back!!!
What the fuck was that?!! Sums up Kyle's frustration and the quick life and demise of NASCAR on TNT
2004 Sharpie 500 & 2009 Coke Zero 400 were my favorite memory on TNT
Since I don't give a hoot about ratings I'll say TNN with Eli Gold and Buddy Baker had the best broadcast out of all of them. My favorite part was if the coverage started at 12:00, the cars were rolling off pitroad at 12:01. I don't care for all the pre race stuff. Do we really need a mini documentary on Ross Chastain's watermelon farm or something similar every weekend?
Jeff Gordon snapping the 31 race winless streak. Bristol in August 2002 at the Sharpie 500. Doing the bump n run on Rusty Wallace with 2 laps to go.
Every intro that TNT had was a true banger. And Ralph Sheheen up in the booth was also a lot of fun. But, that's just about it. TNT's season was always too short, and it was poorly promoted.
Ok.
Since NASCAR On TNT, Is Coming Back...
Bring Back The 2004-2006 Graphics, Same With NASCAR On NBC.
But...
Don't, Have The Side Ticker.
I didn't know about the non stop pepsi 400, cuz I was in the stands instead. When Kyle hit the wall right in front of me it shock the stands. The crowd went crazy just like it did this weekend.
My favorite memories was the TNT coverage of the Bush and Cup races especially the 2008 Lifelock 400 (race where Dale Jr broke his 76-race winless streak). That particular race fits the TNT slogan of "We Know Drama" with JR Nation on the edge of their seats waiting for something bad to happen with Dale Jr winning the race on fuel mileage. Another lap, he would have ran out of gas if it wasn't for the rules of caution ends the race in an event of an overtime restart
Good thing me and my dad were at the track for that magic show and tie talk in 2008.
bill weber must've got his idea to be a magician from larry mac lol
Favorite TNT nascar memory?
Easy. The 2002 sharpie 500
The Bump And Run 2002
Wally’s World!
"So…no matter how ANNOYING, and how BIZARRE, and how SILLY things get, if you're in the Chase for the Nextel cup, you've got to stay f--water is splashed into his face."
You're not old enough to remember but Weber was AWFUL. Got drivers wrong often, called white flag with 2 to go, would often be lost in the booth. He was not talented enough to be in the booth, regardless of Bestwick.
Remember when a Lord of the Rings marathon on TNT was cancelled because the July daytona race was delayed to that day. Pissed off a lot of LOTR FANS
I think i started watching nascar around 2015, I miss hearing boogity boogity
Me too
TNT had some awesome racing back in the days. Jimmy, Jeff. Tony and Dale Jr I miss those days. Thank you TNT.
Can you do one on why the Coca Cola racing family is getting smaller and smaller
Man. In the early 2000s the coca cola racing family was huge. They even had ads play in theaters before the movie started
@@MrGunlover12 I remember a really cool animated one, I wish Coca Cola would actually promote it and add Chase Elliott to the Coke family.
Just goes to show after they lost Bill Weber that was the real nail in the coffin for TNT,Wally and Petty wasn't the same with Adam Alexander in the booth

Allen Bestwick not having a tv job is a big problem. Unless he doesn't want to someone should give that man a job, no offense to Rick Allen but I think Bestwick just does a better job. On an unrelated note, for Christ sake get Ralph Shaheen back on the Supercross broadcasts.
top 2 TNT moments:
2002 Sharpie 500
2008 Coke Zero 400
Kyle Busch leading at Chicagoland. Too boring, let's cut Marc Fein in half instead. 🙄😡
That's just stupid, I remember that too, NASCAR should have cancelled the contract
All I remember is TNT covering Pocono. That’s all I associate TNT with. Late 2000’s/early 2010’s Pocono races
Kyle Petty: That's incredible
It was the Heyday of NASCAR and here in Canada to have any coverage was a great thing and in Canada we called it the redneck Channel
2012 Quicken Loans 400 and 2014 Pocono 400 easily are my favorite TNT moments. I'm glad NASCAR's no longer on TNT. We have more network TV races (NBC) because of losing TNT and ESPN.
switching channels regularly was a terrible idea
I'll be honest, it just wasn't the same after BP passed away, same without Alan Bestwick in the booth as well, (no disrespect for Bill Webber), and I just wasn't a fan of the TNT races from '07 to '14
Honestly I would want NASCAR on TNT to come back but only if it’s run like the NBA broadcasts because they do that way better
Didn’t help that July NH race was during the 2014 World Cup final
I don't even know where to get nascar any more, can't get USA. I give up!
Mine is either between Daytona 2007 or Daytona 2009
NASCAR on TNT was part of the reason I go by the username TNTMan93

Jeff Gordon won at Chicagoland in 2006
Jeff Gordon wins a New Hampshire in July of 2004!
Tony Stewart wins at Daytona in 2009 2012 and 2013! Dale Earnhardt Jr wins at Bristol in 2004!
First thing that I remember from tnt was watching that 3 car synchronized spin on racebuddy through the tony stewart cam.
Nothing of value was lost.
'I'm only going to say this once, I'm only going to say this once." My Kyle Petty impersonation ha ha.

Nascar in the early 2000s warning practice and qualifying on speed tv and watching races on ABC, TNT, espn and NBC. I miss those days
Think NASCAR on USA is similar broadcast team production wise. the TV feed was few seconds off the from MRN feed
