You mention Man u, when Ferguson left. The big mistake Moyes made was changing backroom staff, instead of just slipping into the chair. The players looked around and thought why are you getting rid of coaches that helped us win the league what have you won.

This is exactly the way football has been going. As much as we dislike Ashworth for snaking us, when he was at Brighton he made a simple but common sense argument that makes perfect sense as to where and why football clubs are going the direction they are going.
The club sets the style of football they want to play and recruitment that reflects that, and you bring a manager in whose playing philosophy is congruent with that of the clubs.
The old days of manager having the power are dying for the reasons you've said. It's just simply too expensive to go from one playing style manager to another and having to sign completely different players to fit a new philosophy.

Unfortunately for Eddie he's not at Bournemouth anymore, he's at a much bigger club where he's now being told that he can't have control of every aspect of the club. This is normal for any club that's looking to become a top team. He either needs to get in line or move on, nobody is bigger than the club. This needs resolving ASAP

    • @deandashingly872
      @deandashingly872 Месяц назад

Wenger and Freguson didn't do to bad when their had total control, l think all he wants is the final yes or no when signing a player. The sporting director and all the people around him couldn't coach a team because it is far more difficult than the job they are doing. They didn't turn average players into a top 4 side and Joelinton into a Brazilian international.

@@deandashingly872 With the greatest of respect mate football is in a completely different place to the days of Wenger and Fergie. Football clubs are now potentially multi billion pound organizations. Our chairman literally said he wanted Newcastle so he can turn it from a 200 million investment into a 2 billion one. You don't put that in the hands of one person. You're giving them too much leverage.
What happened to Manchester United after Fergie left? They crashed and burned practically into sporting irrelevance barring a Europa League or domestic cup which if you're a Man United fan isn't exactly exciting.
Look at Brighton model - they set the playing style and recruitment and they bring in a manager whose philosophy matches the clubs. If a Graham Potter does well and goes to Chelsea, no problem they just go and get a Roberto Di Zerbi. Everything else is still in place - playing style, players that fit the philosophy, recruitment etc. If you give the manager all the power then all of that changes when you get a new one and in an FFP world you can't go from playing style to playing style and sign a new squad every window.

2 weeks into significant change is early for any party to establish the new dynamics. I would expect the change to be explained as the success for the last 2.5 years is a starting point to the next level and if that means best in class in each aspect helps Eddie spend more focused time and effort into coaching the team to the next level.

With the background and training as journalists you have, coupled with the previous back history of having done 30 months of press conferences with Eddie your insight is second to none. Therefore if it left you unsettled then that's the truth of the matter. We can't read body language and nuances as someone with such intimate knowledge of the process. There has been a lot of changes at the club and now we will have a period of people manouvering and jockeying for position. Eddie obviously has had a great run as Top Dog where the buck seemingly stopped with him for most decisions. Saudi controlled the purse strings but they seemed to be owners with a soft touch and the day to day hands on work was left to people no longer part of our set up. Hopefully when the dust settles these are changes for the better. Employing people such as Paul Mitchell HAS to be a positive. Interesting times and I found this video invaluable. Thankyou.

It would be interesting to know what Eddie Howe’s contract says about player recruitment. Does he have final sign-off on acquisitions? Because that’s pretty much been the position to date. The recruitment team find the right players, present them, do all the negotiations but Eddie gives the green light. If that’s been the practice, and something has now changed, we get into the difficult area of contract variation and potential constructive dismissal. Remember Keegan’s second stint at the club and how that ended unhappily. The club needs to be clear about how these new roles interact. A couple of quality signings, agreed by all, and a good start to the season could work wonders.

Howe has had it very easy for a couple of years but his transfers are not good enough. He’s been trying to hang onto Wilson when we have had concrete offers for him from West Ham. Now Wilson is out injured alreasdy, going to miss all of pre season and the start of the season. This is Eddie Howe being loyal to ageing players cause their mates. If Eddie had it his way, we would have a full English team and half of them would be injury prone cause he loves an injury prone player as they are normally cheaper. If he doesn’t like the fact Paul is doing transfers, he knows where the door is. Mitchell will sign you a SON from Spurs but Eddie will sign you a injured Calvert Lewin.
Eddie is one of the main reasons we were in a PSR mess, he wants these over priced British players. It’s crippling us.

Considering the injuries last year, it's no surprise to see a performance analyst come in.
I said a couple of videos back the players' training outside the club needs looking at, and this guy will do all that.
Eddie needs to realise the best leaders delegate and trust those below him.
If he relinquishes some of his duties it gives him more time to concentrate on training and matches, all he has to do is give those people as much info as possible about what he wants and needs to do his job.
To me, all he said is he's happy, but he needs clarification on the new setup and his role in it.
    Nothing he said worries me.

Don't know what to think, part of me thinks its a power play to as he says 'set boundaries'. Was he unhappy they were forced out? The timing sucks, would have made sense to leave it til after the window shut and didn't have an effect on transfers.
Have Mitchell and Eddie disagreed on an incoming or outgoing? Is Wilson really injured or was he going to be sold and the vague 'procedure' is hmm. Maybe reading too much, i don't know, I'm frazzled! He seemed more positive about Bunce than Mitchell. I was excited about both guys coming in, we definitely need the injuries managed, taping into Mitchell's contacts and knowledge can only be good. Solid collaberation and all should be ok
A lot to speculate on. I do wonder how PIF will react to this. Is that why the video interviews were more positive perhaps? For me he didn't seem at all interested in England just using the platform to get his point across. Doesn't mean he won't get other offers and leave if unhappy. Def a strange one. I'd really like to see some signings, we will see by those who has had the biggest say in players i think. I am hoping we can take Mitchell on face value, it was a good interview. Thanks Guys, was dying for the video to be uploaded to get your views.

I think Howe has to be realistic and he's even said himself about managing upover with club hierarchy is an important skill. He was entrusted with responsibilities in terms of recruitment when there was no staff after the takeover. Now that people are in place he might have to yield some of that responsibility. All top clubs have dofs and people decide who is coming in and going out other than the manager. Its the way it is thesedays and I doubt howe would find any top club willing to just give him all the keys without question.
Give the example of celtic, they had a structure in place before hiring howe and told him how it would be and eddie didn't fancy it without all his staff joining him. Big ange comes in and wins everything and Celtic fans loved him working with what was there. A settled structure can work. Sounds like he got his way with ashworth going but might not be so easy with mitchell in.
Hopefully its all smoothed out in the next couple of weeks.

Best reporting. Really appreciate the nuances you picked up on. Eddie must be pissed off we sold Anderson in a panic and now the new Performance director might have the authority to change training methods. I think Eddie is responsible for buying Bruno, Botman, Issac, Gordon on the cheap and are all top/world class. Add in Pope, Sandro, Tino, Lewis then that amazing recruitment by Eddie. BUT now the club is saying we are unhappy with Eddie's recruitment and so will give Mitchell the authority. Also Eddie has coached and massively improved existing players like Big Joe, Schar, Murphy. Regards injuries these included 2 broken backs, 2 dislocations, Botman refusing an operation as he gambled to get in the Euro squad, and a long term stubbed toe and Achilles injury. Non of these are muscular injuries BUT now a Performance Director will oversee Eddie's training methods. My viewpoint is the club don't value or appreciate what Eddie has achieved and so Eddie is better off leaving if offered the England job.

FA aren't paying out Eddie and his entire staff contracts, Southgate makes less than Howe already. Eddie needs to be reigned in on transfers, too much bias on PL proven English players, we needed multiple CL quality players last summer. I think he could be more pissed off about the Bunce appointment, no doubt they have questioned the intensity he worked the lads at last season and the unwillingness to rotate the team.

That's right he's been rattled because his training regime has been questioned and someone has been installed over his head to solve the problem which he also had at Bournemouth . There was an interview where he claimed he wasn't aware Longstaff was taking pain killers for a long term injury and he also has too many favourites. He's a nice guy but can he take Newcastle to the next level remember he was way down the list of candidates for the job . We are about to find out.

Eddie said the sale of Elliot Anderson didn't sit well with him, but went on to say that was a critic of financial fair play, change was inevitable and I would bet that wouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

Howe has the leverage of the England job but with the greatest of the respect he is not Pep Guardiola. He does not have the track record to be able to dictate to the Saudis that he wants control of everything. As you quite rightly said, Paul Mitchell is one of the most coveted sporting directors in the game and he would not have come to Newcastle without assurances/guarantees over recruitment which is going to be 90% of his role whereas with Ashworth it was not.
Howe's recruitment has largely been good in Pope, Guimaraes, Botman, Isak, Burn, Trippier etc but it has not been without it's faults. Matt Targett on a rumoured 100k a week and can't get a game when the clubs only recognised left back was a young unpolished Lewis Hall who Howe did not trust until towards the end of last season. Harvey Barnes for 40 million when we already had Anthony Gordon and were crying out for a right winger and started last season with Miggy and Murphy going into the Champions League. The Tonali situation and the lack of due diligence though I'd put that more on Ashworth's head than Howe's.
Those are some of the problems with recruitment and then we go to the injuries which were absolutely out of control last season. The club did the right thing bringing in a sporting director who specializes in recruitment and a performance director to look into our injuries.
We think the world of Howe as a coach but football has been evolving for some time. Can't give all the power to one man then that manager doesn't work out and you bring in a manager who wants different players to fit his system but FFP doesn't allow that so you end up with 1/4 of your squad of new players and 3/4 of the old players botched together that doesn't fit. It's too expensive and too ineffective.
The club will dictate the playing philosophy and recruitment and the manager (whose playing style aligns with that of the clubs) implements that on the training pitch. If that manager does not work out, then you bring in a manager who fits your philosophy but you feel can do it better, you're not ripping up the rulebook and signing all new team to fit a new system.

Did anyone think after the appointment of Mitchell and Bunce, things were going to end well?
I thought there would be trouble ahead but not as quick as this has blown up!
Howe is an old school coach who has basically had everything his own way for years at Bournemouth and up until now at Newcastle.
Lets be honest here, Howe is being worked out and his cryptic criticisms will play straight into the hands of PIF who are looking for him to metaphorically hang himself.
He's popular with the fans so this approach being used is to force Eddie's hand so he will leave the club.
Amanda & Mehrdad were the first to go with Eddie set to complete the changing of the guard.
Howe is coming across like a little demagogue here but he is going to lose and rightly so in my opinion.
Things did go wrong last season with recruitment, results, injuries, performance so PIF have brought in professionals to help with that, Howe will have to go along to get along otherwise...
He has to realise that he will not have that level of control within a modern ownership and that is why it is only a matter of time before he leaves.
Whether it is England or the dole queue, Howe pressed the Doomsday Clock on his Newcastle career yesterday!
This will not be popular with fans but we might have to dispense with Howe's services so we can move forward as a club with our new structure in place.
What good is Howe going to be within that when he is knocking back everything they advise to him.
Everyone has had a pop at Ashworth but the rumours of Howe having too much say for Dan to do his job now looking like it could all have been true.
Howe will definitely lose his little game of brinkmanship because PIF will side with Mitchell who they have tasked to find rough gems for polishing while Eddie argues the toss over an injury prone mate of his who gets injured again not being available for the start of the season!
I have always said Eddie would just be a bit part player in this journey and not be at the destination of events.

Whats obvious is he wasn't completely clear and has for some reason put pressure on the board and told everyone it depends on them and what they do. I can't imagine the owners taking threats very well at all especially ones made to the press. I know what he said but im less convinced he will stay after the interviews. It could of been very simple to quash the speculation but in a purposeful way he has paved the way for it to continue, it looks like he has got a foot in both camps which begs the question why would our owners back him in the transfer market if he isn't fully committed, the next manager may not want the players he wants. This season looks like a possible car crash before its even begun.

You both look a bit shell-shocked and clearly struggling to articulate the tone, message, and disconnect between what he said to the written press and what he said on camera.
    And thats understandable.
Having watched the interviews, and read the articles, I agree that theres no question he loves the job, the club and the fans. I also agree that he doesnt look or sound like he wants to leave.
One thing Eddie is, is intelligent. He also chooses his words very carefully. Nothing he'll have said will be by accident.
But its key that everyone in the hierarchy above him wants him to stay. I'm positive that with the right reassurances he will do. I think the only risk is if he decides he can't work with a Performance Director, but in my opinion he's too much of a professional for that to be the case. Again, he just needs reassuring on where the remit of that role ends and his begins. Any 'big' club he might go to will have the same set up. We've been told that Mitchell also wants to play posession-based attacking football, so don't see any major issue's with the type of player he'll target for transfers.
Last thought, I wonder if his unhappiness about Anderson leaving is playing to the crowd a little, to keep the players happy and on side. He was a popular lad in the squad and there may be a bit of unhappiness at his exit, and how it was managed.
