Thanks for the video! I really like the idea of using two different colors fountain pen ink. I’ve tried one color and I over did it with the wash. I was using too much water. I really like the border too. I’m going to try this.

I mentioned to my art instructor how easy you make this seem but how relatively difficult I found it myself. And he said, “He’s been doing it for thirty years; you’ve been doing it for thirty minutes. What did you expect to happen?” Right.

There is always an element of this, whilst I'm not sure how much I've improved over the years, I now do something in 5 minutes that would have taken me an hour before

@@TobySketchLoose Thanks for the feedback. Aside from my sketches not being all that good, I find as well that my painting, intended to look spontaneous, simply looks contrived - which is what it is. Nevertheless, your videos are encouraging and I’m learning a great deal.

Thank you! I love these kind of sketches.
Just a few questions. What kind of paper do you use with ink washes? And which nib size is your fountain pen?

Can I ask a question, do you practice these sketches before you make the video, or are they spontaneous?. Reason I ask is I am never sure where to stop or if the composition will be correct at the end, I am thinking if I do one or two or three interactions of the same at least one might work before the energy runs out and the sketch becomes stale. At the moment I only do one if it works ok if not I’m upset because I ruined it , cannot find the happy balance. I have only been painting for three months and was struggling to find a media/ method I like now I have found your channel I am trying to stay close to your methods, it seems to fit my personality a bit more, i hope you don’t mind.

They are mostly spontaneous, sometimes I haved sketched the scene before - for example if it's a sketc of my home town I've sketched most places several times so although the sketch is spontaneous... I've also sort of had practice.
I often have a point I'm trying to make in my sketch too, e.g. something to demonstrate, so I will have planned in my head certain steps to take.
Re composition, try stopping before you think you're done and having a break. Come back, look again, and if it doesn't feel finished then add some more ... That's how I do it if I'm feeling a bit underconfident!

@@TobySketchLoose Hey Toby, great video! This is a dead link and you only seem to have waterproof inks on your blog? (maybe I'm looking in the wrong place). Love using soluble ink but up till now only used the cartridges in new pens before they ran out and I fill up with my Platinum Carbon ink. Any suggestions on a brand for bottled soluble ink would be great as I hate buying plastic!

Ah, you're using the red ink as a kind of watercolor pencil 😁 Have you ever tried Inktense? I find that brand a bit chalky.

I've tried inktense indeed, I found th textures a bit odd - I could quite get on board with it
