- The Bauer 20mm long throw polisher is a great tool, especially at the $80-100USD price point. We have another one we've been using in our shop for over a year now (that long term update to come sometime this month), but we purchased another brand new one to do these modifications to along with a more "measurable" approach to the improvements.

Not a problem. The RUPES are great machines, but if you're just going to use it once or twice a year or so, Bauer is a great choice.

Thanks! I just got this bauer for $75 when HF sent me a 25% off singe item in-store coupon via email. I'll use the saving to do the grease and backing plate upgrade. Seems many have been happy with the Torq or Maxshine. I have a Mercedes Benz van (Metris cargo) that needs more throw than PC 2474 was dishing out.

Here you can find these labeled as Yato ΥΤ-82200 or Bulle 63490. Chinese copies , with different brand labels, exactly the same, only thing thats different is the colour. Change backing plate from 6'' to 5'' , maxshine's backing plates are affordable and decent quality , you get less stalling, much easier to use as demonstrated on the video and cheaper pads as well. What i do suggest , dont know if it matters that much but better use molybdenum grease. Cheers for the video

Great vid....I'm still running my 1st gen,Chicago, that I heavily modified...did everything from grease swap,the switch mod,and also decked the upper gearbox housing for a better mesh...also using the old style HF 6" backing plate...decking the gearbox,is where I got the best results...out of the box I couldn't run the unit for more than 10mins,without taking a break cause of the vibration,heat and noise....after I did all those mods,I can do an entire F150,without taking one break...like night and day,with only an hour of mod time.....as mentioned, I got the best results after adjusting my ring and pinion mesh(only decked a few thousandths)...
Next,I may pull the grease,see if I can seal it and install a one way vent and fill with some 90w140 gear lube..
Can you expand on 'decking the gearbox' I havent heard of this term and process.
@@troywilliams2473 decking means taking off small amounts of material of 2 mating surfaces and getting them completely flat and square for tighter fitments and tolerances....in my case,I took a few thousandths off of the gearbox housings so the drive gears would have a better gear mesh,in turn removing all the extra slop/play,making the unit run smoother and cooler

Funny. When I did the regrease to my Porter Cable couple years ago, I used towels and Q-tips. Tedious process but nice difference
I believe the weight has an adjustment, turn the backing plate until it's aligned on the very front there's a whole you can stick the Allen wrench, I turned mine a quarter turn to the left, it feels better a little less vibration

I think rotary polishers are great as well. Much quieter and no drama like a d.a.
Next to my new canister vacuum, this has got to be the most nerve racking thing I've shopped for in ages... it sucks! it's great! it sucks! it's great! Almost makes you wish you were back in the pre-internet days. I'm sure someone's mentioned it, but I'm curious as to what part the stock bearings could play in any of this, or how bad they are. I know one other review mentioned it getting screechy after putting lots of use on it, but he liked the tool for the most part and never said anything about replacing them. Seems sort of trivial for guys who work on cars. - And much thanks for all the thorough testing!
I used Valvoline Palladium #2 3% Moly, Heavy Duty when I changed the grease in my rupes and milwaukee rotary vary sticky stuff, made a noticeable difference.
I was wondering how a brake grease would work here since its moly or boron nitride or ceramic.
Great video. I used Lucas Red N Tacky, personally. I have some concern that the other white lithium you use is not really rated for higher loads and Temps in the long term, but if you change it on some annual basis it would probably do just fine. Thanks again for this video!

I used the red and tacky also. Made a big vibe difference. Fine tuned the counter weight with a #6 hex half a tightened turn and now it’s super smooth.
It would seem that every time you change the weight of the pad, you need to change the counter balance. Given that vibration got worse with heavier, and less with lighter, I would wonder if increasing the weight of the counter balance with the original pad would produce the same results. I saw on a different video that there is an adjustable weight under the 2-screw cover.

You can remove some material on the balancing weight to improve balance ! That’s what I dit! Now is vibration free! Almost perfect ! And the backing plate on my da is 10 bucks if I want to replace and get the same results
By far my most trusted source of car care information. Off topic from the Bauer, do you put any toppers on your ceramic coated vehicles? I just put on Cquartz Lite and have Reset. Anything you recommend? Thank you again Scott!
Carpro Gliss is a great topper for coatings.
I myself use just basic JBL headphones for the noise and just so it would be nicer even when working with a pressure washer love the honesty, do a comparison with rupes 21 mark 3 and/or 2 like all these test on camera if you can, great video

Will be interesting to see what adjusting the counter weight does as well. Wondering if there are bearings inside too, that can be improved if they're cheap and might also benefit from packing with grease or better grease. Great videos and thanks for sharing!
I change all my bearings to skf when I got my da ! And yes you can take some material from balancing weight! That’s what I dit and it works almost perfectly! You don’t even feel the vibration on it! But you got to be careful because if you take more weight that it should it will vibrate more! Cheers
I do want to mentioned that is battery operated! I modified to fit and work with the Parkside 8amps! Brushless motor ! The hardest mod I ever dit! The controler doesn’t want to start with Parkside so I have to make some resistance between the minus and the other two wires that goes in the esc on it! Works fine
Here is a backing plate I've found to improve the maxshine pro m15 polisher "Torq TORQ200 TORQ22D Backing Plate (5 Inch)" It helped a lot with stalling and it didn't need the washer mod.
Other more expensivr options would be bearing replacements, copper impregnated carbon brushes, and playing with the balance weight

When I first swapped out the grease I was underwhelmed with the results. I decided to add a bit more grease and, holly fuck, night and day!!
I see you used white lithium grease. A lot of the reviews say to use red n tacky grease. Wonder if that would've been any better. Great video, I enjoyed it. I have the same polisher
Got the part # for those NTN bearings?
Would like to have seen the adjustments on the weight. Does not take much movement in or out. To take away the vibes. Rotate the counter weight, to line up with the adjustment hole and turn to get results. Looking face on to the front you will see the adjustment hole.
You could probably press those bearings out and get ceramic ones probably make it less hot and quieter
Has anyone tried to mess with the adjustable weights to see if it takes more vibration out?

I've watched a few videos doing this same thing and they all say that there is way better grease that you can use then the lithium grease. Specially to help with heat. And break down.

Also, you have to rebalance it when you change the backing plate. It is balanced for the OEM plate and anything heavier will throw it way out of balance

It's a great polisher for the price, better with improvements, but still won't be super smooth like the high end ones. Tolerable, yes. The work they do is the same though!

Foist!!! I use anti vibrating rubber on my cheap polishers. Much smoother than my roops mark 2

Bought the polisher last week. Put the Rupes 5 inch from the other video and new grease. Vibrated just as much for some reason. And it's very difficult to get the screw that came with the polisher to hold the Rupes down. It tends to start sliding around. Trying to figure out how you didn't have to use an extra washer.
May be manufacturing differences? Bolts right up with both of the ones I have. I re use the small little washer that is on the original backing plate.
@@ScottHD Yeah must be. Had to really crank down on it to get it tight enough. The rupes one will work just with a different Allen wrench so may just use it.
Scott have you changed out the greases on your Rupe's machines are still using the stock grease?
They use the Lucas white lithium grease when you send them out for rebuild...and I'd assume that's the stock grease too. (I use the same grease for them)
@@ScottHD really?! It’s good grease but I couldn’t imagine it would be the best for something like this. I just recently got this machine and haven’t used it, but I know during summer when I go to use this Lucas lithium grease and it’s very hot, it is not viscous at all.
Would something like Lucas hi temp red grease be too thick?
Do you think there would be any improvement if you added weight to the head of the polisher itself? Should give it more inertia making it resist the vibration, and also transfer more of that work into the pad instead of your hands.
As in more weight to the counterweight, or like a heavier handle?
@@ScottHD Heavier handle. Though tuning the counter weight to see if you can get gains there would probably be a more low hanging fruit to try for first.
Do you think if you were to do the same thing to the Popoman cordless polisher from your previous test, the noise would go down?
I very well may try that. That's my only big gripe with that polisher is the piercing noise (but I generally wear headphones when using it)

The counterweight in mine wasn't adjustable, just removable. I could possibly machine off small amounts at a time and see if it helped

@@papas813 Hf may have updated the design and changed that part on new machines but I think Scott has 2 or 3 at this point. One of his has to have it.
It would also be interesting to test the chemical guys 5 inch backing plate. The stock 6 inch backing plate weighs about 10 grams less than the 5 inch rupes. I'm not sure what the torqs one weighs but I'd guess it would be lighter than stock.
Its fun tuning one of the cheapest polishers to perform with the big boys

Which backing plate is best for the price to replace?
For this one, the RUPES 5" is likely your best bet
A 5 dB difference is still very significant. The decibel scale isn’t linear. I mean 60 to 70 is the difference between two people having a conversation and a full restaurant of people talking.
Performance Popoman or this Bauer?
The excel backing plate is discontinued, so I guess Rupes it is!

Oh yeah I agree. They're coming, getting better and better all the time. I bought the new v2 SPTA cordless. Still only $200, but *vastly* improved in every way from the v1. A very good choice to have some fun with cordless for now until some really good high end options inevitably start coming. It's a surprisingly smooth and capable polisher.
I know that Bauer and Milwaukee both have something in the works, but not releasing them yet.

Try Super Lube. It’s better than white lithium grease.

Shoping for a 20mm long throw +/- few mm. Would you spend $160 on this ($80 for this +$5 grease +$75 for the better backing plate) or something else around that price without having to do any work?
How often would you think you would be using it?
@@ScottHD do you have a answer for both a professional (but smaller side 3-5 cars a week) and a weekend warrior (1-2) cars a month? Doesn't seem like there are many around that price point and also that throw length so might have to expand budget for the sake of this opinion.
@@MrLegacyGT I think that this Bauer polisher, if using it professionally, likely won't last nearly as long as something like a Flex or RUPES machine, but it can break 2-3 times and you're still money ahead. It's not nearly as smooth as a RUPES, but so far (1 year+) using the Bauer in our shop, it's held together.
@@ScottHD so starting out with smaller business as working from the weekend warrior to becoming more of a self run business this is a good starter and worth the $160 investment. As more cars and ability to take on more expense then move to the RUPES where the payback period could be drastically reduced.
Great, informative video. I'm a DYI're that polishes my own 30' motorhome. I'm in the market to upgrade from my Meguiers MT300 8mm throw. It's obviously way to small for large areas. I'm looking at the Torq 22. Which polisher would you recommend?
I don't have the experience Scott has, but Ive used a torq, I purchased a maxshine for my business and love it. In my opinion considering the pricing. Bauer then maxshine then Rupes. I'm so happy with my maxshine that until I've scrapped together the cash for the mac-daddy Rupes I won't be making any stops on the way up. Unless we get some actually good 5in cordless offerings.
Maxshine are great polishers for the price. I've used them. I've compared it besides rupes, both 15mm. Rupes was slightly quieter with a smooth start otherwise, the maxshine and rupes were same.
Larry have you considered looking at the griots g 15 or g21 for larger areas

I second that although I have the m15 pro. The HF ones really do suck for vibration. The Maxshine is night and day better. I did have a HF DA until I threw it in the trash when I stripped the cheap housing screws trying to change the grease. At that point I knew it wasn't worth keeping

Now I feel it hotter when polishing and I dont feel it working the same.
What could I did wrong?

Hmm that’s the grease I was thinking of using. It might actually be too viscous. Idk honestly but in another comment Scott said that Rupes (I think) used the Lucas lithium grease, which is way lighter than the Red n tacky.

Agreed. I think with some fine tuning in the manufacturing end, this would put some hurting on the professional polishers. The other Bauer I bought about a year ago is still going in our shop but its sounding pretty bad inside the electric motor...may just be the brushes, but I'm going to do a teardown on it soon

I have made so much money from my Bauer lol
that wasn't ear wax in the gearbox , it was the grease HF bought to put in their brand name product, don't be stupid and replace it. after the gears have run long enough to heat the gears hone the contact points and melts and go all over the gears it now contains powdered metal that improves lubrication by reducing gear wear. don't shorten the life of your money. don't run out and buy vibration meters to make a video for youtube.
It has an adjustable counter-weight for god sakes!!! Why are we playing with different weight backing plates instead of attempting to adjust the counter-weight adjustment in or out? You’re already half way there when you took it apart…just go all the way man. Come on…
Ya. This was a popular mod on the old cheap Chicago version and on that one, you had to buy a new wt. this one is freaking adjustable, just do it. I don’t get why they are messing the grease and plate and NOT addressing that “while you in there”? The weights job is to counter the wt/vibration and get it isn’t addressed
@@KosmicHRTRacingTeam I think in part either he doesn't know anything about the counterbalance weight. And partly because there's a bunch of reviewers that like to rag on Harbor Freight products for the video clicks, and don't actually care about how good of a deal, or how good of a tool it can be.
Do you also measure the decibels of your wifes farts ?
This is helpful, but it could have been just as effective and only 2 minutes long. Some basic video editing classes as a prerequisite for RUclips posting would people years of pointless long-winded video watching.
