    Install the Middleton bios, it will allow the SSD to run at full SATA II speeds and allow you to upgrade to a newer wireless N or AC card.

    Picked up a dusty but good condition ThinkPad R61 at a used electronics place today out of
    the "scrap laptops" bin . When tested at home turns out only fault was that a memory stick
    was bad under the palmrest. Guess the store tech didn't want to mess with that and scraped
    it out 8) Now with 4 gigs ram and Win7 64bit but still on a mechanical drive for the moment.
    These are still very very useful machines are they are compact and VERY rugged...!

    This oddly reminds me of my favourite feature on my old HP notebook from the same time. It has captive screws, so you can loose them. Very useful for upgrades

    While I don't have a Thinkpad, I do own an old Dell that's basically a Thinkpad down to the little pointer stick and that's my daily use laptop. If you're ever thinking about using any kind of Linux on it, with that specs list it should be able to handle pretty much all modern distros. :D

    i have the same but with a T8300 cpu Core 2 duo 2.4 ghz, 4gb of ram and 1TB of harddrive no ssd and windows 10 pro installed
    it a great machine !

    That's a nice bit of kit. I'm still using an old Toshiba lappy from a similar era as my daily use laptop. Think I'll stick an SSD in it. Big fan of these era "business" laptops. They're built like tanks!

    Nothing like a old school Thinkpad. I have been using a x200 as my main machine for almost a year, the only issue is the lack of GPU power

    I would recommend a t7600 for the CPU upgrade. I swapped my t2400 for a t7600 and it was a huge performance bump in my dell inspiron 6400.

    Awesome Video tom! I totally think you need to do a follow up video and install Middleton's BIOS as it does full speeds of sata 2 and will boost your ssd performance. also i really think you should try windows 10! it would help with boot times sooooo much. i just recently got my first ssd and man is it great (sandisk 128gb if you are curious) rambling inside have a great day tom!

    Hi, I have an T61 and an R61 too! Next to the screws you can see pictures that you show which you have to put out! I bought a Samsung 850 EVO SSD but I have an T7700 and it boots in only 20 seconds. I think yours needs more time to boot up, am I right?
    Sorry maybe my English is not so good as yours but I'm from Germany.

    Avira is completely unnecessary if you already have malwarebytes it just takes up space and hogs the os a lot, if you really need a secondary anti virus you should try Trend Micro (You do have to pay for it tho)....Anyways great video Tom!

    • @nelizmastr
      @nelizmastr 8 лет назад

      +System32 Malwarebytes is not an active anti virus, unless you get the premium version. MBAM Free won't detect anything unless you point it at it.

    1:00 Yeah, today's standards aren't any better especially with looks and the lack of ports on modern laptops. I'd rather take that "tank" over some flimsy Chromebook or the goofy spaceship looking gaming laptops.

    Have you thought getting the docking station for it?

  • @DavorinMlakar
    @DavorinMlakar 8 лет назад

    You should install the modded bios witch unlocks sata II (so you are runing at SATA I) speeds and you can then also upgrate to and beather CPU (T9600 is the sec best i think). Bios can only be updatet on a 32 Bit Windows from the desktop. Oh also you can put inside a Ultrabay HDD Adapter 12.7cm thick for an R61 with an 15.4 inch screen. And hopefuly you dont have that shared memory gpu inside intel gma x3100 sucks. :) and my lenovo r61 starts up somewhere same with an hdd with poor performance at 4k read write.

    Hey Tom do you have any experience using an sshd? I'm pretty current on your vids and I don't remember seeing you having used one. For a hackintosh specifically. I'm having trouble deciding if I want to go msata with a USB spinner for storage and space Ida concern since it's fitting into the base of an iMac G4. Anyway I value your opinion and if you have time if love to hear your thoughts. Also I've spent so much money on it already I'm trying to save a buck here.

    • @ItsMyNaturalColour
      @ItsMyNaturalColour  8 лет назад +1

      +Jason Almont Hey Jason, I haven't personally used an SSHD but I did install one into a friends laptop. He's fairly happy with it. I don't have any direct experience but I'd say go for it if it's the correct price to performance to capacity ratio for you. Of course, a proper SSD would be much faster but they cost a lot more per GB. Apologies that I can't help anymore. Good luck!

      +Geek2334 Not originally. The Samsung 830 that found it's way into my Mac Pro and later on into Jess' MacBook Pro was the original PPC Promise SSD. The OCZ drive was first put into my Power Mac G3 B&W :)

    I know it's cliche to say how well Macs are built, but even the mighty Lenovo pale in comparison to the engineering that goes into any Apple machine.

      +TalesOfWar How so?

    • @GendoPrime
      @GendoPrime 8 лет назад +2

      +TalesOfWar Thinkpads are engineered to be dissembled and re-assembled in about 30 minutes with a single screwdriver. The engineering of a Macbook is strictly for aesthetics and planned obsolescence .

    Does it have dedicated graphics? If it has integrated the speed of the ram may be holding it back (DDR2 peaks at 800 or 1066 forget which).
    Also as others have mentioned, it can do proper sata 2 but need bios update. Then ssd can perform up to 300mb/s read and outperform even a desktop wd black.
    Any attempts to find a 3rd party magnification application? The built in one isn't great...
    It was sold with a max of a T7700 which is 2.4ghz with double cache and better fsb. Does it have thermal issues with a cpu it sold with? Or is it a latter model cpu that uses same socket.

    • @televisionandcheese

      It has a nVidia GT 140, but you can get a graphic card that replaces the DVD drive! My T61 has a GTX 260 instead of the DVD drive, but it does get a bit hot. :/
      I can run GTA V though! :)

      I do not know about if it can on modern thinkpads. I'd need to know the model number at least. As far as I know, the IBM T40 and higher laptops with Hot-Swappable Ultrabay drive is compatible.
