Enjoyable, practical video that reminds viewers that not all desktop users are gamers obsessed with the "latest & greatest", and that running costs, reliability, ease of use etc are important to loads of people. Btw I am still using Windows 7 on a "Donkey PC" I built that I use once in while for ripping/dubbing/scanning because the legacy software still works on it. Thanks again for the video. =)
Nice refresh PC for the folks! Its good to see you leave the keyboard struggles in there because those small hiccups get edited out a lot of the time and seeing how you were able to solve the issue is immensely helpful for new builders. I keep an old Dell usb office keyboard around to do fresh windows installs because for whatever reason sometimes my more modern mechanical or backlit keyboards are not recognized. This happens more in older stuff or budget parts with simpler bios options in my experience.
Awesome build! Crazy to think that the fractal design case is an older one, still looks new because of that simple design! Looks like it’s a great system, I’m sure it’ll last just as long as the old one. The old hardware might make for a cool test system and as for the external drive, you could always swap in a spare hard drive and use it as an extra Time Machine backup for an old Mac or something similar like that. Great video!
Big thanks! The Fractal Design cases really do hold up well. These little Core cases especially look very good just about anywhere. Thanks for watching.
Nice build Tom and great choices on the parts. I recently started looking at PC building again after about 12 years as an exclusive Mac user. it's amazing how the landscape of parts has changed. The funny thing is the APU would probably run windows 11 quite well with a patched installer, might be worth trying for fun. The great thing about going AM4 is in a few years there will be a ton of vastly better CPUs on the used market probably for next to nothing with a similar TDP but better performance for future versions of Windows.
Thanks, Ashley! That's a really good point, I didn't even consider the future stepping stone of a faster chip in the AM4 socket. Unlike the APU build, there are excellent upgrade options here if more performance is needed after a few years.
That switch from him now to him 11 years ago is wild . I was about 14 at the time and i feel old lol its crazy how quick a decade passes . Great vid , Subbed
The passage of time is wild, I still remember watching the original build way back then! And good to see you actively posting more lately! I have a good chunk of content to catch up on since my interests shift around in phases but the vids like this are a really awesome throwback as a viewer of 13 years :)
It's refreshing seeing someone acknowledge the value and longevity of AM4 still. I built a new budget gaming PC around black friday and despite some people literally telling me it would be a mistake and that I was "buying into a dead platform" I'm totally happy with my R5 5600X. True enthusiasts are the ones like us who grew up cobbling together upgrades from scrap PCs and tinkering to stretch the most use out of things, most people don't care about upgrading their CPU because a new gen came out a year later and will run stuff until the end. "AM4 is dead" is false until AMD stops manufacturing CPUs and chipsets lmao
@@Pugboy1321 Couldn't agree more. I have 2 AM4 systems here, neither particularly high end, and they're just lovely for my needs. Hit the nail on the head with the cobbling together back in the day. Huge thanks, enjoy your catchup, got some more good stuff coming too!
just came across your channel randomly! you seem as mad as i on old tech just continuing to function !! my 2014 AMD FM2+ Kaveri A10 7870k got demoted from main pc use however is still in use today as a Batocera retro emulation ..it runs most of the console systems up to WII no probs,,hope that will inspire you for new use for an old system :) Have a good day now
I have a 4600G. Originally got it for a steam machine build. It worked perfectly and did a great job, but I upgraded it pretty quickly since I wanted to play around with a RX6500XT with the steam machine. Since the 4600G is PCIe 3.0 only I threw a 5600 I had laying around to the most I could out of the 6500XT.
Great stuff! I'm sorting out an upgrade for my father in law - on an extreme budget. He's using a Pentium 4!!! it was my own "RIG" a long time ago, I forgot I'd given it to him. Budget is mega tight, going for a second hand Lenovo Thinkcentre Mini, tiny PC, 8th Gen Intel but it'll do for his needs, and importantly it can run Win10/11 go online and be safe.
Back then with AM3+, FM2 sockets i used AMDMSRTweaker command-line tool with an automatically starting bat file to reduce powerdraw from the power-states. It's default voltage on the highest turboclock was around 1.425V and most of the times depending on CPU model 1.35V worked fine with lower temperatures+fan speeds.
Great video Tom, you’ve done the PC revamp pretty much exactly how I’d have done it. I actually just done a college paper on best bang for the buck office PC I think for the old parts, no harm in hanging onto them for the sentimental value. I think it would make a great little retro pc or the likes in a tiny case Happy new year to you and your family 🎉
Beginning the year good, with a new IMNC video. A fun retro project for a FM2 board, could be to run WIndows XP and some old games on it. (If you're interested in that sorta stuff) As I remember (might be mis-remembering this) those FM2 APU's were some of the last CPU's and motherboards that supported Windows XP, and will practically be all you need to run old games.
Nice build. AM4 certainly still have some life in it. But running a business on an unlicensed OS that hasn't received security updates in five years seems a bit risky.
It’s my understanding that running memtest from within the OS has the limitation of not being able to access 100% of the memory. Therefore, the standalone version will deliver slightly more accurate results.
Watching this on a little Lenovo ThinkCentre i5-4570T system attached to my TV, that's pretty much of the same vintage as your former build. Nice trip down memory lane, while liking what you did with the upgrade too. (Your old system might be up for a bit of retro gaming with Windows XP Pro SP3 32-bit, dual booting with Linux Mint. ;-) ).
I used to own a laptop with an A10. The main drawback of that laptop was Windows 10, as it was very sluggish, and this was around 2018. Good thing that you didn't upgrade their system to any newer version.
Deffo. It was lovely on Windows 7 but I think forcing Windows 10 on to that config would've been a step too far, at least in terms of maintaining the snappiness.
I've got a HTPC with an A10 APU, running LibreElec/Kodi. Two tuner cards for broadcast TV, plays all my media from my NAS. Still works great. Maybe you could build one with yours?
It has a lot to do with "price to performance" when selecting new components for a system. There are those on RUclips who harp that AM4 is dead but from where I'm sitting I think that's just nonsense! The only difference in my new "all AMD" system I just built and the one you're building is that I purchased everything (except the case) used! It's got a Ryzen 9 3900X 12 core/24 thread beast of a CPU, a Radeon RX 6600 GPU, 32GB DDR4-3200 RAM, 850 watt PSU, 512GB NVMe primary drive and a 2TB mechanical storage drive, a 120MM AIO CPU cooler and 5-120MM case fans and Windows 11 all for just shy of $600 US. This system will last me for another 5+ years for what I do with it and will be able to completely upgrade it later if I need to.

With any luck this machine should last another 10-12 years! And being AM4 there's still room to expand with the likes of the 5000 series.
