Oh my goodness. That would be such an amazing experience! If my passport was in order, and Mom’s cancer was in remission, I’d be booking the flight!!! I’ll have to hope I can stumble onto some other tour another time. I could never do something so... impactful without my mother with me. We’re partners in crime after all! I have to say, I’m a bit jealous of all the places you’ve gotten to see in all your travels, but you’ve put the experiences to such good use in your research and writing that I really can’t begrudge you! I hope it is a wonderful time and experience. Also, I was having a bit of difficulty explaining courtly love to my father the other day, so it was handy to whip out The Fall of Anne Boleyn, where near the end, you explain it succinctly but thoroughly. It was the perfect way to get the idea of it across. It does seem a bit... strange to modern sensibilities, but at the same time, something straight out of Arthurian legend. The pure and kind queen everyone adores and wants to protect and impress, valiant knights being chivalrous. I love that I’m slowly gaining more specific passages that are useful to me in my conversations with people on these topics. I also recently reconnected with my paternal grandfather, and it’s going to be really fun to discuss this part of history with him. It took him by surprise to find out what a history nerd I am. 😅 I continue to be so happy I found your channel, and through it your website and books.
Amara Jordan I am probably one of the few female truck drivers that are HUGE history (mostly Tudor) junkies and I love the Anne Boleyn Files! Claire is amazing, isn't she?? I am also familiar with caregiving to cancer patients (my stepfather and mother-in-law) I have to say thank you for your post and you are truly a blessing to your beloved mother. It is not an easy job to watch someone you love and care for suffer, but I'm sure you make your mom's days MUCH easier and brighter and she has a better quality of life because of you. PS I cannot imagine trying to explain courtly love to my father! Now THAT would be an interesting experience, even with Claire's book as a guide! LOL
My mom is going through cancer treatment now and I’ve started sharing Claire’s videos with her during chemo and such. It’s so fun to get lost in another time and place (even if it’s often sad). I hope your mom is doing better! ♥️

This would be a dream tour for me! However, I have chronic health problems that leave me confined to my home. In the last year, I have only left my home 3 times - 2 for annual doctor visits and once to celebrate my 50th birthday at a restaurant. I also don't have the money as my medical expenses take every penny I have. Many times I am down to choosing between buying groceries or paying for my medications. My heart and my soul want so desperately to go to England, where my family came from originally. I am a student of all history and would love nothing more than to sit with you at Hever next to a fire and talk late into the evening. For now, I live through the pictures you paint in your videos, and the travels of my friends. I pray that one day I would be in a position to join you, as almost nothing would please me more!

I love your passion Claire and thank you very much. It must be wonderful to do those tours. I'm Irish so we haven't anything like those castles here. Unfortunately the English destroyed all that was Irish. But I'm still fascinated by the Henry 8th story. How he could be so callous to everyone around him, particularly his wives. I like walking around ancient places and wondering what it was like to live then and imagining the men who built them. I often visit Castletown House grounds and Carton House grounds in Co Kildare and imagine Pride and Prejudice, Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett. Come and visit sometime (although I know its not your period of passion)

I think most castles look kind of scary and dreary but Hever looks like a warm and pretty place. The interior pictures I have seen are a bit dark but overall, plus the gardens, it looks delightful.
Oh I hope I can come on a tour with you and all those wonderful experts you will have, plus eating at Hever Castle, but unfortunately not this year. I hope you do this tour again. I love listening to you talk about Tudor history.
It ended up being taken be the crown after Thomas Boleyn's death, and the death of his mother who was living in it at his death. Anne of Cleves was able to reside there after the annulment and it's lovely that she seems to have been happy there. Mary was able to inherit several properties from her father and grandmother, but Henry VIII put a stop to Hever being hers.
I would love to join you on the Executed Queens tour, but I have a date on July 14th with another Queen--the rock group--here-in Northern California (my 6th time seeing them). Perhaps next year I can go on tour with you. I hope you accept Tudor novices like myself who always want to learn more!

How wonderful it would be to join you on a tour. I must content myself with RUclips. I sleep in an old Charleston Rice Plantation bed that I pretend is a Tudor bed with hand embroidered hangings.
I had heard that the Charleston rice plantation beds were supposed to enhance fertility , especially during the day’s when many children were needed to work for the plantation .

I felt quite overwhelmed at Hever I almost felt Ann at my shoulder in places I went as a child it has stayed in my memory since. I think I need to go back soon
I would ADORE to be there. But at that point, I’ll be too pregnant to fly (I live in America). But it’s been a fun pregnancy, as I’m due around the same time Anne was due with Elizabeth. So I certainly felt it when you mentioned how uncomfortable Anne must have been laying on her belly at her coronation! But my baby is a boy...so sorry, Anne 😅
I toured the chateau of Chambord back in the 1970s. One of the rooms included on the tour was said to be where Mary and her 'Four Marys' would attend daily mass. I was astounded by its size. I couldn't imagine two people in that space, much less six, especially when one considers the fullness of their fashionable skirts. Maybe they wore something less full, but no one knew. I had a walk-in closet in my former home, and it was twice the size of Mary's 'mass' room. Yikes!!

Hever Castle is a place I want to see! As a nurse, who has seen death, I know what death looks like, I have seen both end stage illness and Violent death. I know what Violent death looks like, I have been so deeply interested in the Tudors since I was a child. For whatever reason. When I read about these innocent people, murdered, really, I know what Violent death looks like, and how innocent, young people respond to violence, as a nurse, I know what the physiology of response to violence is. I can literally see what it means to see a human being murdered. The courage of these innocent people to face a violent death astounds me. Because I have seen it. And I am always amazed at the courage of these young women. To know that Lady Jane Grey SAW her young husband murdered and to know that she, herself, would be murdered next. As a nurse, taking care of dying patients, I am astonished at the courage of these young innocents!
I’m also a RN ( retired ). what you posted made me think also how brave those young people faced death . In most situations these executions were basically murder . We are so much more compassionate in today’s world . Although I’d live to go back in a time machine and experience the Tudor times , I prefer how we live in today’s world . I feel sorry for all of Henry’s wives . When saw the movie “ Anne of a Thousand Days, “ in 1969, I thought Anne was a hussy . But, she was really a victim of other powerful and manipulative people in her family who used Anne to gain favor from King Henry .
Have you ever inquired on why Queen Elizabeth I didn't give her mother a proper burial? As she was Queen with absolute power, even though people felt a way about Anne, I believe the people would've understood the act of kindness by Elizabeth had she done it.
Perhaps Elizabeth heard things about her mom that weren’t kind . It’s amazing Elizabeth I functioned so well as a monarch . She was out through adult problems at a young age .
Not in a ghostly way, but I do feel very close to the Boleyn family when I'm at Hever. I've done two talks there and both times got rather choked up when I realised I was speaking about the Boleyns at their home and I hoped that I did them justice.
You've picked a very old video! I don't even do tours now. Yes, they're expensive because they're luxury accommodation and are unique experiences. I know Philippa's tours are sold out this year and a lot are people who book again and again because they love them so much. They really are incredible.
I was fortunate enough to visit The Tower when I was 21. Sadly, I was an ignorant nitwit, and knew nothing.....so missed an opportunity to understand the significance of everything. At the time, I was busy being shocked that they were searching through my messy purse and limiting our wanderings to such an extent (there was apparently a very serious fear of IRA bombing threats while I was there). As a redhead, I was possibly more suspiciously regarded than others....as a young dummy without a clue, I was oblivious.

I feel badly for Mary because it sounds like she tried so hard to not have to execute her cousin Jane! It was just wrong of Jane’s father to keep rebelling in her name and showed Mary that she would never be able to rule with any peace as long as Jane was alive. They had their differences but it sounds like there was true love and friendship between them.
Mary executed Jane because the Philip, who cared nothing for her outside of funding for his wars and control of England, didn't want contenders around . Similar to beheading the young earl of Warwick to pave the way for Mary's mother.
I have heard the number of people executed by Henry VIII was significantly high. Is there an accurate figure for this - as the exact number who he had killed has been disputed.
There's the number of 72,000 used by Holinshed but I think that would probably cover all executions (national and local), so not all at the king's orders.

🇺🇸I’m determined to read up on lady Jane gray. I’d like to know if Mary’s half brother Edward VI named LJG as queen wasn’t Mary then committing treason?🤔🇬🇧
Maryann Lockwood who was committing treason would likely have been determined by who was the victor and who had the most support. In this case, it was Mary who had the support and came out the winner, so Jane was considered to be committing treason. Technically, both Richard III in 1483 and Henry VII In 1485 could have been considered traitors, had they failed in their attempts to claim the throne. And I imagine you could even say something similar for William the Conqueror In 1066.
It's a really complicated issue as Edward's device was never ratified by Parliament, whereas Henry VIII's will was. It is unfortunate that Henry never re-legitimised his daughters. Eric Ives argues that Edward's device was lawful in that it was consistent with common law, which prevented illegitimate children inheriting if there were legitimate claimants. But then the peope would have seen Mary as the rightful heir and wouldn't have known much of Jane.
Henry VIII made sure it was Christmas every day for Katherine, all those pretty dresses and jewels. She is STILL Henry's pretty thornless rose in the afterlife, just like her cousin Anne Boleyn.

How wonderful it would be to join you on a tour. I must content myself with RUclips. I sleep in an old Charleston Rice Plantation bed that I pretend is a Tudor bed with hand embroidered hangings.
I had heard that the Charleston rice plantation beds were supposed to enhance fertility , especially during the day’s when many children were needed to work for the plantation .

I felt quite overwhelmed at Hever I almost felt Ann at my shoulder in places I went as a child it has stayed in my memory since. I think I need to go back soon
I would ADORE to be there. But at that point, I’ll be too pregnant to fly (I live in America). But it’s been a fun pregnancy, as I’m due around the same time Anne was due with Elizabeth. So I certainly felt it when you mentioned how uncomfortable Anne must have been laying on her belly at her coronation! But my baby is a boy...so sorry, Anne 😅

I toured the chateau of Chambord back in the 1970s. One of the rooms included on the tour was said to be where Mary and her 'Four Marys' would attend daily mass. I was astounded by its size. I couldn't imagine two people in that space, much less six, especially when one considers the fullness of their fashionable skirts. Maybe they wore something less full, but no one knew.
I had a walk-in closet in my former home, and it was twice the size of Mary's 'mass' room. Yikes!!
I find it interesting that the two queens of Henry that were executed were cousins.

Hever Castle is a place I want to see! As a nurse, who has seen death, I know what death looks like, I have seen both end stage illness and Violent death. I know what Violent death looks like, I have been so deeply interested in the Tudors since I was a child. For whatever reason. When I read about these innocent people, murdered, really, I know what Violent death looks like, and how innocent, young people respond to violence, as a nurse, I know what the physiology of response to violence is. I can literally see what it means to see a human being murdered. The courage of these innocent people to face a violent death astounds me. Because I have seen it. And I am always amazed at the courage of these young women. To know that Lady Jane Grey SAW her young husband murdered and to know that she, herself, would be murdered next. As a nurse, taking care of dying patients, I am astonished at the courage of these young innocents!
I’m also a RN ( retired ). what you posted made me think also how brave those young people faced death . In most situations these executions were basically murder . We are so much more compassionate in today’s world . Although I’d live to go back in a time machine and experience the Tudor times , I prefer how we live in today’s world . I feel sorry for all of Henry’s wives . When saw the movie “ Anne of a Thousand Days, “ in 1969, I thought Anne was a hussy . But, she was really a victim of other powerful and manipulative people in her family who used Anne to gain favor from King Henry .
Have you ever inquired on why Queen Elizabeth I didn't give her mother a proper burial? As she was Queen with absolute power, even though people felt a way about Anne, I believe the people would've understood the act of kindness by Elizabeth had she done it.
So true, good point, why did Elisabeth I remain silent about her mother all the years of her reign?
Perhaps Elizabeth heard things about her mom that weren’t kind . It’s amazing Elizabeth I functioned so well as a monarch . She was out through adult problems at a young age .

Not in a ghostly way, but I do feel very close to the Boleyn family when I'm at Hever. I've done two talks there and both times got rather choked up when I realised I was speaking about the Boleyns at their home and I hoped that I did them justice.
The Anne Boleyn Files and Tudor Society - I can imagine it makes them all the more real, to be where they lived.

You've picked a very old video! I don't even do tours now. Yes, they're expensive because they're luxury accommodation and are unique experiences. I know Philippa's tours are sold out this year and a lot are people who book again and again because they love them so much. They really are incredible.
I was fortunate enough to visit The Tower when I was 21. Sadly, I was an ignorant nitwit, and knew nothing.....so missed an opportunity to understand the significance of everything. At the time, I was busy being shocked that they were searching through my messy purse and limiting our wanderings to such an extent (there was apparently a very serious fear of IRA bombing threats while I was there). As a redhead, I was possibly more suspiciously regarded than others....as a young dummy without a clue, I was oblivious.

It was the more merciful punishment of the day. Hanging, drawing and quartering was much messier!

I feel badly for Mary because it sounds like she tried so hard to not have to execute her cousin Jane! It was just wrong of Jane’s father to keep rebelling in her name and showed Mary that she would never be able to rule with any peace as long as Jane was alive. They had their differences but it sounds like there was true love and friendship between them.
Mary executed Jane because the Philip, who cared nothing for her outside of funding for his wars and control of England, didn't want contenders around . Similar to beheading the young earl of Warwick to pave the way for Mary's mother.
I have heard the number of people executed by Henry VIII was significantly high. Is there an accurate figure for this - as the exact number who he had killed has been disputed.
There's the number of 72,000 used by Holinshed but I think that would probably cover all executions (national and local), so not all at the king's orders.

Maryann Lockwood who was committing treason would likely have been determined by who was the victor and who had the most support. In this case, it was Mary who had the support and came out the winner, so Jane was considered to be committing treason. Technically, both Richard III in 1483 and Henry VII In 1485 could have been considered traitors, had they failed in their attempts to claim the throne. And I imagine you could even say something similar for William the Conqueror In 1066.
It's a really complicated issue as Edward's device was never ratified by Parliament, whereas Henry VIII's will was. It is unfortunate that Henry never re-legitimised his daughters. Eric Ives argues that Edward's device was lawful in that it was consistent with common law, which prevented illegitimate children inheriting if there were legitimate claimants. But then the peope would have seen Mary as the rightful heir and wouldn't have known much of Jane.
Henry VIII made sure it was Christmas every day for Katherine, all those pretty dresses and jewels. She is STILL Henry's pretty thornless rose in the afterlife, just like her cousin Anne Boleyn.
