    Mary married the man of her choice presumably for love and braved her brother's ire, one of the few to survive such an act. The pomp and circumstance of those days had to be a marvel to behold!

At thirty-seven, in those times, after several pregnancies, and who knows how many ailments she endured that compromised her health, we can't know what kind of suffering she had in her final days. Providing some other illness such as food poisoning, sweating sickness, etc. didn't get me first! So many people died too soon from illnesses that are treatable now. So Mary iis one of your great grandmothers! I first learned about her when I read the book “When Knighthood was in Flower”. I was 15 or 16 and it was a very romantic story.❤ A Grand love story. I recall that when she learned her brother had decided to marry her to the elderly King of France, she wasa devasted, she was so young, just a teenager herself. She obtained a promise from King Henry that when the elderly King of France died, she would be allowed to choose her next husband. A promise from her brother. Of course, when she was widowed and free to marry again, Henry went back on his promise.and was dangerously enraged about her sudden marriiage to Charles Brandon, his good friend. Oh dear. I dont thik it was in that first book, but later books said Mary and Charles avoided the worst of Henrys wrath by telling hm they were expecting a child…

  • @bethjanelle20
    @bethjanelle20 5 лет назад +15

    Thank you again. Another fascinating video. Queen Mary of France had quite the royal send off. I like to believe there was a romantic love between Mary and Charles Brandon. I know they were banned from court for awhile after their secret marriage without the King's permission. However, they were soon taken back into the fold. I like to think at this point, before the jousting accident, that King Henry VIII held a great liking for his sister and his dear friend. It seems like Charles Brandon was the only one of the King's confidants that stayed in his good graces after they came back to court until Brandon's death shortly before the King's. You always leave me with more questions to find out more! I do love the bells and the animals in your videos. It all makes it seem like we are having a friendly chat rather than being lectured to. :)

    Translation of the French moto for you and your followers: 'La volonté de Dieu me suffit' means: 'The will of God for me (for I) suffices.' Also, it should be mentioned that centuries ago, people who belonged to royal and noble lines or of very high status or importance (even high clergy) where often buried in lead coffins - this was basically reserved for the elite and the wealthy. . . I would tend to rule out tuberculosis as there was no epidemic for this at the time of her death (and the next one occurred in 1553). Mind you, at the time of her death sweating sickness had cropped up from 1528 (could this cause abdominal pain of some sort? - if not, then I would rule this out too...). Another possibility (as she complained of pain localized 'on her side' (i would imagine the right side could possibly involve her liver ...there is the potential that she had porphyria (a genetic condition passed down into royal and noble lines which impacts the liver) - yet another potential cause could be hemochromatosis (which also can impact the liver and if left untreated and diet is not monitored properly can lead to death. It causes too much iron in the blood and this in turn can cause a heart attack...) - there is a genetic anomaly on the gene site which impacts the body for this among noble and royal lines. Yet another possibility: she could have had ovarian cancer whereby the pain on her side could have been located lower in her abdomen. If you can find what 'treatments' she was given, I would have a better clue to what was her cause of death.

We have a tendency to look at history in a modern light which isn't a good thing to do. Henry the vii'th mother was 12 or 13 when she was married, and 13 or14 when she delivered Henry.

    In those days, prior to antibiotics and surgeries, there were a number of possible causes of youthful death-often from infections. Perhaps it was an ectopic pregnancy- not an infection but will kill from hemorrhage. However, even a simple bladder infection could have spread to the kidneys and from there to the blood stream, causing death from septic shock.
    That nearly happened to me- I had a kidney stone obstructing a kidney, then the kidney became infected and I was hospitalized for urosepsis- but antibiotics, fluids and pressor meds did the trick, and a stent was placed to get the stone out. If I'd lived in the 16th century, I'd have died at age 36.
    Then maybe my husband would've married a teenager a few months later-- who knows?

    Do you have a book recommendation about Mary? Also, the "poor men" that walked in the funeral, was that literal or title? Do you mind explaining the beliefs & reasons behind these great funerals back then? I have always wondered what each part meant and why they did each thing etc. Thank you for another great video!

      If you can get hold of Erin Sadlack's book, that's very good, and I enjoyed David Loades' book.
      These "poor men" were poor, as in literally poor. It was believed that the prayers of poor people for the dead were more effective at helping the soul through Purgatory, so poor people were a good thing to have at your funeral.

    It’s uncanny how the bells toll for thee and thou at just the right moment 😉. Marys widower gets remarried within 3 months, to a 14 year old girl who had been in his “charge.” I thought for sure you were going to suggest that they offed her- perhaps poison? Lastly, I found it strange that her tomb was invaded 100 years later and someone snipped some hair off of her and put it in a locket. It almost sounds like she had a fetish following, like something you’d see in Spain with a deceased saint or martyr of the church, with their finger cut off encased in a little chapel somewhere. But she wasn’t a saint. did she have some sort of crazy cult following? Like who cared about her 100 years later? I mean enough to tomb raid to get a piece of her?

      I'm trying to think whether any of my Tudor history events include Jews or Muslims. I'm not sure. I did a talk on immigrants recently for the Tudor Society. It was interesting researching it. People just don't realise that England has always been multicultural - Jews settled in London in Norman times, black African people have settled in England since Roman times, and there was quite an influx of Muslims in Elizabeth's reign. It's all very interesting.

      No,that's just a fiction of the show.
      But it doesn't come from Philippa Gregory's books. Not this scene,anyway. In the "White Princess" novel Margaret Beaufort is by Jasper Tudor's side till he dies and she grieves his death as well as Henry VII. But the show makes not only Margaret,but Elizabeth Woodville and York look bad as well. They're not portrayed like this in the book.
