The Most Debated Watch of 2024? But also one we all seem to agree about... Ironically, where the Nautilus was one of the biggest catalysts that began the "Integrated Bracelet Trend" so the Cubitus seems to have hammered the largest nail in the trends coffin ;)
How we forget the Nautilus was the ugly duckling, taking decades to become a swan. Minor updates (love your mesh bracelet render) and time will likely see the same result. Consider also the complications a larger dial could accommodate. In pictures it looks clumsy, videos on wrists I like it.
what grinds my gears more than the cubitus is the press release from Patek's CEO. I can never look at Patek the same as long as Thierry Stern is present.

Grinds my gears… I see what you did there and it’s very clever. Firstly, mechanical watches have gears (wheels) and Peter Griffin (Thierry Stern) had a briefly popular radio segment in Quahog called “Grind my gears” 😅

I agree with your review @IDGuy. Honestly, the Patek CEO comment about people complaining about the design not being able to afford one is so elitist and shortsighted. It's exactly the reason why people who might afford a Patek in the future will turn their back on them and people like me who could buy one simply won't because we don't want to be associated with such classless people.

Ah, this was definitely a bad blip on their radar but it shouldn't put us off the brand entirely. I'd still love to own one of their Chrono's one day (unlikely, but hey, aspiration) Their sports line though? Really seems like they're messing about with it too much 🥃

I feel like they really missed out on redefining their version of a sports watch. They put so much research into the new double date complication, I would have loved to see a double date standard for all models in the collection with the date at the 6 o’clock. In addition, I think removing the wings from the watch head would go a long way to distance itself from the nautilus. Finally, the dial is obviously identical to the nautilus, they really needed to change it up with a sunburst finish or something
VC basically did this much better back in the early 70's with the 2215 Chronomètre Royal (Maen's Manhattan is an homage of the 2215). The Cubitus feels so lazy and opportunistic.

I’m saving up for a Santos, I believe it’s timeless, masculine and a true masterpiece. The Cubitus has been compared to it since it came out, so now I’m afraid it will actually make more people aware of the Santos, and it will become more popular in turn. I know it’s not the same market bracket, but that never stopped watch buyers from cross-shopping to scratch the itch.
I couldn’t agree more with you. Also think a size reduction would help its cause somewhat. And there is something about the tapering of the bracelet that is particularly unpleasant
I have tried the stainless version and the platinum version on. The stainless is uninspiring however the platinum version which in person is a very different watch than the stainless. The platinum version is quite incredible.. The quality, the feel, the look is incredibly beautiful.. If you are fortunate enough try the watches on you will see the platinum is a true winner.. which is why I have added it to my requests.
I usually can appreciate most any watch even if it’s something I that I would never personally want or wear, but I struggle to find anything positive to say about this one. Have an excellent weekend! 🥃
Looks as compelling as an Apple Watch. Your smaller render on a beads bracelet would change my mind, but I’m also one of the guys that will never own a PF.
The fact you can't even be bothered attempting to tweak the design, speaks volumes. But I doubt this release signals the end of the integrated bracelet craze. After all, Gerald Genta is the keystone looming high above the integrated sports watch segment - not any particular brand - and his involvement was limited to designing the initial watch lines. The brands have been developing and/or 'massaging' Genta's original philosophy - independent of his input - for fifty years. I do wonder what Genta would think, had this been released prior to his passing.
I've been saying to myself over and over again "GO 70's" and wanted to include it in the video... of course I forget to mention such a great piece here. Ah, the Cubitus...
Square watches aren’t my thing. I prefer the tank to the santos for example. That said some of the negative comments have been vitriolic. PP is a fabulous brand and I’m sure the cubitus will be a success.
A random commenter hit the nail for me stating that the name is simply wrong as this is not a cube, making it even weirder. Oh and also the irony of them wanting to target a younger audience with an affordable steel watch after discontinuing exactly that with the steel nautilus...
I wonder if they feel they backed themselves into a corner having to discontinue this nautilus and that nautilus, trying to stop the perceived weight of it in their overall collection from adding more weight, and this was a way to reset to some degree and give options for the next 10-20 years.
Two statements stood out: • I care so little for it … and • Nail in the coffin of the integrated bracelet sports watch. Nothing but concurrence with the former, but the latter - I dunno. Many have been predicting the demise of the integrated bracelet watch for some time, yet they keep being released and they keep selling. I'm wondering if it has become a category; a diver, a chronograph, a dress watch and an integrated bracelet sports watch. They're just 𝘴𝘰 good to wear, either on the bracelet or on an OEM strap. I'm beginning to think they may be here to stay.
I like the Cubitus and it does look distinctly different to the Nautilus. Nothing wrong with the design and I think that Thiery Stern’s comment about the ‘Haters’ was quite frankly justified. Let’s face it, this is marketed to those with money, so it is likely that those who cannot afford a Patek are going to do the most complaining!
There are two problems: 1. The name. It grates, Much like someone trying to give themselves a nickname? 2. It's absolutely massive. So it looks all the more incongruous. I normally like your renderings, but here it still looked just plain wrong. (I don't get any fizz when I handle the Nautilus. I wore one that went for over £200K at auction. Fizzless, nothing) Thanks for your content. Excellent.
Hi IDGuy. I don't mind the Cubitus. It reminds me of the Santos (as you mentioned). I have a feeling that Patek will do what Rolex does with the Cubitus. Patek will start making customers buy the Cubitus first, just to allow the customers to get on the Nautilus waiting list.
Utilising your knowledge of the “ rule of thirds “ the triangle between the date and the pinions of the complications is not equilateral and throws the symmetry out . Regardless… any watch going for 3 to 4 times retail must be hugely in demand by some people. A lot of money for a BR 05 lookalike;)
I can’t even spend enough time drawing triangles on the dials of this model 😉 BUT these will be popular because of the name on the dial (no matter what we enthusiasts say) This hobby of ours…
Why put a big date (which looks great by the way) in one watch and then omit it on the other two? How much thought went into the overall series design?
Proportions just seem all over the place, right? If they'd keep that more rectangular look of the date following with the form of the watch (like a Reverso) imagine how it would've turned out? I just think the piece should've been left in the oven for another 6-8 months 😉
The first nail and the last nail in the coffin of the integrated bracelet sports watch craze. This sounds so poetic, while it perfectly pins down the irony.
Making this watch reminds me of a quote from the movie "The American President" it goes : AJ they don't drink the sand because they are thirsty, they drink the sand because they don't know the difference... Sadly this watch will not hurt PP, nor anything Thierry says we are watch people, it's what we do.
I think this model is a capitulation. Stern admits he cant make keep customers nor make new customers with dressy models. Doesnt matter if we talk Calatrava, chronos or compications. The only thing they can sell and create hype from is a steel sports watch(preferably with a steel bracelet). End of stpry
@2:01 "no underlying identity" to me = they took the design people liked and stretched the shape or perimeter lines of the Nautilus. I am thinking of the 'Squircle' design of an automobile fender shape stretched to be more square. It rarely improves the previous shape, if you know what I mean . . . A lack of design confidence in the original
For anyone saying it’s copying the Santos, there is a Patek pocket watch in the Patek museum in Geneva that is the genesis of the Cubitus. Its pretty much the same.
Going against the current here, however, you showed the og and the new square I’m inclined to think that the version does very much look more modern and may yet appeal to the younger audience. Would I buy one? Nope! Do I appreciate the CEO’s comments? Nope! Do I think these will sell? Yep!
I think Patek will do what it wants, and a lot of people will buy it anyways. I think they are trying to end the integrated bracelet hype with making it square 😅
My issue will always be 10 hears of research and newest line in 25 years, just for square nautilus… hell at least Rolex had the decency of yearly incremental changes and a gorgeous dress watch with the 1908 when they discontinued the celini
I personally think it looks great. Although I don't get the massively over rated Nautilus either . Side by side its far more modern and clean with space to breathe. The nautilus looks lumpy, cramped and old fashioned. The fawning and over hype is straight out of the " People only like what others like first" playbook . It really isn't that special.imho My only gripes are the bracelet is too thin and the round movement window looks totally wrong, especially as it runs against the premise of the watch. The thing he personally did wrong was by calling it a brand new range. Its obviously not and was even called a square Nautilus. If he had said its a side step for those wanting something similar but different. Most would have just moved on Those who are all sad by his hurty words need heed Candice : "Lifes tough, get a helmet"
The watch itself is fine, arguably a more conventional and less divisive design than the Nautilus. Not my cup of tea, but neither was the Nautilus or Royal Oak. The problem is all the games Patek have played, "discontinuing" the Nautilus, then releasing it again just in white gold, then releasing this steel Nautilus with a more squared case. They're just trying to be too smart, and it comes off as tricky, then combined with the fact that it isn't exactly the most innovative design to say the least, and combined with that ridiculous ad and the Stern comments just fed fuel into the dumpster fire.
Anyone else say to themselves…“Sure, I’ll watch every RUclipsrs videos about this new watch that came out 10 minutes ago…but I’m more interested to hear ID Guy’s thoughts next month.”? It’s all entertainment till ID Guy produces something…then it’s education.
Watch aside, that promo video was so nauseating, I think if I owned the watch associated with it, I’d be looking to offload it ASAP. Yes I am probably within the CEOs demographic of not being able to afford a Cuboid, but this watch, the promo and his clumsy speech, has cemented my lack of aspiration to to actually own something from the brand. Moved to the ignore column.
I tend to like the Cubitus a little more than the Aquanaut, but to be honest I have no desire to own either. Even if given to me I'd likely sell it, buy what I really want, and put a little change in my pocket. 😎 Cubitus buyers will probably find this tacky, but if I was in the market for a square watch, I would probably get the only TAG Heuer that appeals to me. The Monaco with the calibre 11 in it. Edit: You know... now that I have thought about this for a few more minutes. I feel historically Patek really built its name, and demanded its high prices, due to the extreme level of craftsmanship and high horology. They were/are the pinnacle of the triangle of the holy trinity. Peak watchmaking. I feel they are now trying to drive their prices with exclusivity and controversial designs. I wanted to say "edgy designs", but its not actually edgy at all. Anyway, I mentioned square watches, but for high finish and high horology... Give me an Armin Strom or Breguet any time over a PP.
The advert at the end.....pure cringe. I'm with you - does not need to exist. To be honest, I never liked this integrated watch thing, and always detested the nautilus. Those side ears... it's just horrible... you know me man, I'd take a pilot watch or a calatrava over any of this hyped up mess
There are far cooler (and more coherent pieces) out there, as we know 😉 Hope your journey to your Mark XX is going well brother! I saw one the other day for something like £3250! One day soon, man 🔥
A pork chop of a watch from a pork chop of a CEO. And just to round things off, he put his foot, or hoof, in his mouth. I have always loved the Calatrava with the off-center small second hand, but I think I'll wait until the next generation takes over.
I assume wealthy people walk into Patek stores with no research, just bags of cash…..perhaps seeing it through unbiased eyes…we got a big square one, a curvy one and and middle curvy square one…I’ll take one of each with a blue face…maybe it works🤷♂️ I agree it’s uninspired, and not for me…but then the owner already called that out….its not for me. And even if I have the means…which is not beyond me for some models….its not for me. Thanks, his statement just shortened my list.
This is the perfect flipper watch… till it isn’t. You are right all around it’s a forgettable design and every time I see it I think about how the Santos does it better.
'I don't care about the design' - I couldn't agree more. And it's only the worst of design which can create that lack of an opinion. Where it's just so 'non' that it captures no emotion at all. The main take I have is the date in the centre complication looks terrible - why is one number bolder than the other - and why is it aligned so badly that it would make Seiko blush - and this is on a PR image....
Thierry is a neo-baby who never heard the word no. It’s no wonder Sandrine divorced him. He just cribbed an old Genta design, made it square and called himself a genius. He definitely distanced himself from his family’s traditional watch company. I’ve owned two Calatravas and while I liked the way they looked, found something I didn’t like - with the 3919, it was the crown. A manually-wound watch with a crown that small?!! The other watch was one I bought in pink gold, so that’s on me. Patek should have tapped a designer and made an all-new watch. The Sterns should limit Thierry’s time with the press and make him stay on script. Oh wait, I’m getting my nepo-babies mixed up.
Patek's CEO came across as arrogant, snobbish and staggeringly tone-deaf. The Cubitus looks like a watch designed by a bunch of marketing/'insert job title' executives who should know better - ie. recognising that they should leave the designing to a designer. Absolutely love your render though @IDGuy - levels better than the real thing!
Since it took 25 years to launch a new model, and it really looked like the old model, is this design leadership from a Holy Trinity brand? Taking the Nautilus and squaring it off should not take 25 years! Sorry Thierry Stern you can be more innovative!
Whereas AP was criticized for the Code being a departure from the Royal Oak yet still coming across as sterile, the Cubitus seems so derivative that is almost lands in homage or microbrand territory. At least with the Code, it can stand on its own merits with the floating lugs, the patheon crystal, and the dial choices. The Cubitus will forever be relegated to applying Nautilus style cues in a disjointed manner. AP tried to move on from the RO, where as Patek has decided to milk its customers once more. I would love to own a Code. I would never buy a Cubitus.
But compared to the 222, it's a night and day difference 😉 VC killed it with their Revival (when it arrives in steel I reckon folks will be going wild)
For me I would get a Cartier Santos and call it a day. More history and better design. Also, if I had the money for a Patek I would stay away from their sports watches. I would go for a Vacheron overseas before either an AP or Patek
Was having this conversation earlier with someone, it does feel like somebody plugged in "Square Nautilus" into an AI program and had it do the work... Who knows? Maybe they did?? Talk about a conspiracy! 🥃

I've been saying to myself over and over again "GO 70's" and wanted to include it in the video... of course I forget to mention such a great piece here. Ah, the Cubitus...
I have never owned a Patek, and never will. Great marketing!!
Got to say, the Rooftop Marketing clip was painful to watch more than anything else 🥃
Square watches aren’t my thing. I prefer the tank to the santos for example. That said some of the negative comments have been vitriolic. PP is a fabulous brand and I’m sure the cubitus will be a success.
No matter what we say, the Cubitus will find an audience AND will likely catapult folks onto the mysterious list for the more in-demand pieces 🥃
A random commenter hit the nail for me stating that the name is simply wrong as this is not a cube, making it even weirder.
Oh and also the irony of them wanting to target a younger audience with an affordable steel watch after discontinuing exactly that with the steel nautilus...
I like how it looks. If I could afford it I'd buy one or two. To each his own I guess.
I wonder if they feel they backed themselves into a corner having to discontinue this nautilus and that nautilus, trying to stop the perceived weight of it in their overall collection from adding more weight, and this was a way to reset to some degree and give options for the next 10-20 years.
Two statements stood out:
• I care so little for it …
and
• Nail in the coffin of the integrated bracelet sports watch.
There are two problems:
Fizzless, nothing)
Thanks for your content. Excellent.
Hi IDGuy. I don't mind the Cubitus. It reminds me of the Santos (as you mentioned). I have a feeling that Patek will do what Rolex does with the Cubitus. Patek will start making customers buy the Cubitus first, just to allow the customers to get on the Nautilus waiting list.
Thierry envious of the Genta spotlight.
@ 💯🤣
Why put a big date (which looks great by the way) in one watch and then omit it on the other two? How much thought went into the overall series design?
Proportions just seem all over the place, right? If they'd keep that more rectangular look of the date following with the form of the watch (like a Reverso) imagine how it would've turned out? I just think the piece should've been left in the oven for another 6-8 months 😉
The first nail and the last nail in the coffin of the integrated bracelet sports watch craze. This sounds so poetic, while it perfectly pins down the irony.
I love how it looks but I could never justify getting one. So that really chills my opinions on it to being more lukewarm.
My old boss thought his Aquanaut was a nautilus. That’s the average PP customer 🤣
Making this watch reminds me of a quote from the movie "The American President" it goes : AJ they don't drink the sand because they are thirsty, they drink the sand because they don't know the difference...
Sadly this watch will not hurt PP, nor anything Thierry says
we are watch people, it's what we do.
Having seen the two tone with the blue dial with my own eyes I thought it was a beautiful looking watch and photos don’t do it justice
I think this model is a capitulation. Stern admits he cant make keep customers nor make new customers with dressy models. Doesnt matter if we talk Calatrava, chronos or compications. The only thing they can sell and create hype from is a steel sports watch(preferably with a steel bracelet). End of stpry
It’s a pity that every brand (even the most prestigious) has to go down the route of making sports watches their flagships. Well said Nikolas 🥃
Ever since I bought a watch from MAMACOO, My question is if it's this hard to tell them apart, what is the point of owning an authentic watch?
Going against the current here, however, you showed the og and the new square I’m inclined to think that the version does very much look more modern and may yet appeal to the younger audience. Would I buy one? Nope! Do I appreciate the CEO’s comments? Nope! Do I think these will sell? Yep!
The worst part of Thierry’s comments about people who are complaining about the Cubitus can’t afford a Patek, is that he was born into his money
If they make it smaller then it would be more popular. If they reworked the movement and made it square then they might be on to a winner.
I think Patek will do what it wants, and a lot of people will buy it anyways. I think they are trying to end the integrated bracelet hype with making it square 😅
I prefer the Cubitus rather than either the aquanaut or nautilus which both leave me cold. But I still want a Santos de Cartier
It looks like an homage to an homage.
It really isn't that special.imho
My only gripes are the bracelet is too thin and the round movement window looks totally wrong, especially as it runs against the premise of the watch.
The thing he personally did wrong was by calling it a brand new range. Its obviously not and was even called a square Nautilus. If he had said its a side step for those wanting something similar but different. Most would have just moved on
Those who are all sad by his hurty words need heed Candice :
"Lifes tough, get a helmet"
If the shrink it to be 35 mm instead of 45mm……it’s just 2010s big watch bad right now….it just doesn’t have soul.
A smaller diameter could've made such a dent, you're right! 🥃
No, I will never own a Patek Phillippe. But I can look at many of their models and understand the selling price. The Cubitus? No.
One day soon, man 🔥
@ID-Guy I'm definitely aiming to be a one watch person... so my grail journey has begun
A pork chop of a watch from a pork chop of a CEO. And just to round things off, he put his foot, or hoof, in his mouth.
I have always loved the Calatrava with the off-center small second hand, but I think I'll wait until the next generation takes over.
You hit the nail on the coffin. I couldn’t care less 🖤
The cubitus is a smart move. If you buy it you get elegeble to buy a nautilus or an aquanaut. PF will sell a lot more.
It definitely seems like a “springboard” piece 100% 🥃
Good luck with that. I’m sure their smug salespeople will string a lot of people on with that.
Yep, pretty much. Doesn't need to exist. Your mark up without the wings looks much better.
I couldn't care less either. In fact, the only reason I'm even bothering to comment on the video is because I think it helps the channel ;)
I think is watch is BRILLIANT. I would buy it in a New York minute.
Thierry Stern is to Patek what Chris Bangle was to BMW.
Would you choose a cubitus or AP x Kaws ? ☠️
The Cubitus makes you realize how great Gerald Genta was 😂
Looks like Cartier had a love child with Tissot. 🤢
And only the child a mother could love 😉
Yes, let’s!
The comment section is going to get spicy ;)
Great title... it is a little bit yucky this watch isn't it. I'll just keep wearing my Casio W59 square.. the only square you really need
Imagine the impact this piece would’ve made in let’s say 2021? By 2024 where the “integrated trend” is drowning? Seems just a bit late to the party 😆🥃
Patek is like an old granny trying to do a backflip.
Seems more like a response to the 222 revival than a responce to th Code 11.59.
If this is luxury count me out - uninspired but in keeping with most new things - has no soul feels like it was ai generated.
Was having this conversation earlier with someone, it does feel like somebody plugged in "Square Nautilus" into an AI program and had it do the work... Who knows? Maybe they did?? Talk about a conspiracy! 🥃
I like it a lot. Much more than the Nautilus.
