The themes and musical numbers seem vintage, but there are obviously modern vehicles, technology and fashions, so I'm not sure what time period it's supposed to be. Across the Universe was strictly set in Vietnam era 1960s, this one is a crap shoot as to when or where it is set.

I love Ryan Gosling. He's every bit a star. But he needs to rev up his expressions and performance a bit. He's too Ryan Gosling-ish and serious and puckered-up in every movie. He should come across a different person in this movie than the one he played in Drive, or The Place beyond the Pines. But he comes across as the same. It's the difference between good actors and superlative actors, like say Russell Crowe. When you watch Russell Crowe in 'The Beautiful mind' vs in 'The insider' or 'State of Play'... you get the feeling you're watching 3 different people, 3 different roles, 3 different protagonists. You forget it's Russell Crowe, you only know the guy on screen is the part he's playing. But most of today's actors, you always see them playing themselves more than the role they're meant to be, most of the time. Sorry for the rant, but i really think Ryan Gosling has a lot of potential he isn't tapping into.
