  • Have you ever had heart palpitations? I have and I know they can be really scary. The thing is, I’m a Doctor and I didn’t even recognize them at first. That was even scarier. This is my story about my heart palpitations, the medical testing I underwent to evaluate them and what happened in the end.

I'm 42 and I've had chronic heart palpitations for the last 5 years and have had multiple tests done and tried multiple supplements. I cured it recently by cutting my coffee intake to one a day and drinking 3L of water a day increased my salt intake slightly and increasing my vitamin B and C. Intake. They pretty much 100% gone

Hey Doc🎉I'm a Doc too of Internal Medicine plus kept learning beyond the paradigm 😊 I like your energy, vibes, smiles, vulnerability, openness, willingness to learn from others. Very impressive. I just happened upon this and...I'm moved🎉 I make constant efforts to be in vibrant health. But occasionally, being human, a gift comes upon me. Gift? Yes, anything that helps you improve whether in yourself or empathy for others is a gift. Your palpitations took you on a journey. In medical school i had hip pain. That took me on a journey. First around top specialists in Western Medicine doctor training. Later to Chiropractor. Later to nutritionist. I was too deluded by training to take the nutritionist on. Later, by years i recognized that certain foodstuffs caused more symptoms plus. I got rid of that pain for 30 y plus now. Past 10 y or so i noted palpitations like you. I do Medicine by strict reasoning of cause and effect. My mind goes through a long list of search. Too much of what? Too little of what?
    You hit many, some quickly.
For me, i noted a clear pattern of
    GOING TO BED AFTER MIDNIGHT
YES AFTER MIDNIGHT HAS TONS OF DELETERIOUS EFFECTS ON YOUR HEALTH OVER TIME INCLUDING HEART. Not just adequate rest which is important but before MIDNIGHT go to sleep. Work schedules otherwise should be reviewed.
I started going to bed before midnight and almost immediate turn around.
Now the potential cause list is long
But considering minerals is a must for this electrical organ including magnesium potassium, calcium, manganese...many more.
The digestive system can also give heart gifts. Too much toxins? Not enough daily Bowel movements? Foodstuffs not healthy? Issue with the intestines or stomach or GI tract?

I also had the same scenario. Started having heart palpitations and the test came normal. Even Halter came normal and the cardiologist was so confused on what was going on. So I consulted a cardiologist from India and he ruled out that the problem is my BP. I was diagnosed for hypertension and once I started taking medicine for hypertension heart palpitations vanished. It really helped.
Anyone having a heart palpitation please don’t take it lightly. Please try to rule out. Because it’s a sign that something is wrong.

I had all the same symptoms - palpitations, unexplained tachycardia, not quite CPAP level sleep apnea etc and after a ton of tests and a few months of therapy for "anxiety" - I hopped on HRT for menopause and am cured. No Dr put it together, I asked both my PCP and therapist "Is this just a menopause thing?" "No, just anxiety, have you tried deep breathing and walks in nature?"

I just discovered your video`s tonight. Watched the one on flushing ear wax, then started going down the list of other video`s.
Love your personality, and fun way you explain things.
Sorry to read about your heart problems, and tests you are going through.
Several years back, maybe 30 years ago, my Heart would speed up, and I would get light headed. Might last a few minutes and some times an hour or so. Would go in to see the Dr. after work, and they would do an EKG, but nothing showed up. Did this several times, even wore a monitor with sticky things on me while I slept at night.
They had me do the stress test, put sticky things on me, do a Ultra Sound of my heart, then run on the Tred Mill to get the heart up to 144 beats. Then flop me on the bed and do a 2nd Ultra Sound. Heart Dr. checked the video`s and said, Heart is fine, no Heart diesase etc...
They figured I had PAT, and gave me a low dose of Delicore to take every day.
Time went on, had a few other epizides. One evening at home Bro in Law was over, and it hit me, Heart was going crazy, they ran my Butt to the ER. heart rate was 180 beats a min. gave me 2 shots, one to stop, and one to kick start the Heart. was in there a long time to get things stabilized.
After that, I was sent to Stanford. They run a probe up a vein from the Groin to the Heart, and zap some nodes to get the electrical part of the heart working properly. That was probably 12 years ago, and all fixed. Never a problem since.
What are the causes of PAT? PAT occurs when electrical signals starting in the heart's atria fire irregularly. This affects the electrical signals transmitted from the sinoatrial node, which is your heart's natural pacemaker.
PAT stands for paroxysmal atrial tachycardia. It's a type of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT). This means your heart suddenly starts beating very fast. This may feel like your heart is racing or pounding. Because it comes on so quickly, it's often scary.
Iam 79 now, have no health issues, take no drugs, run around like Iam 23. It`s just a number.
Lay off the Sugar, it is poison to the body. Just about everything has sugar in it.
Lay off all the processed foods.
I drink a ton of Coffee, it isn`t bad, just what you put into it.
Stay far away from Star Bucks. they load it full of sugar.
The Standard American Diet = SAD. 90% of all health issues in America.
Dr. Jan, hope you get to the bottom of your Heart issues. You are a very nice Lady.
    Charlie

Very glad to know you are doing better. I've had a couple of things that cause me to be out of breath, Acid reflux. When I would get the acid in my chest, it would cause me to have shortness of breath. When my heart rate went up, because of Viox. I had to give up caffeine years ago. don't miss drinking coffee or sodas. I see my cardiologist once a year. I have had all the test you mention. Stress Test, EKG, and the one where they check for blocked arteries.

I had palpitations once in while and it's very scary especially when you're quite just reading or in bed I don't understand ! like you I got a holter monitor and of course nothing showed up 😂 for sure stress is probably a good part of it but I am menopaused tendency to light anaemia for year so could be all of this I heard that magnesium deficit could be a cause of irregular heart beat I start massage with magnesium oil which it is more absorbing than pill I think it helping me in a way I'm so glad you feel better Dr 🙏 keep up your good work a lot of love to you 💚

The palpitations used to terrify me. Now they just piss me off. Sometimes I won’t have one for weeks then I will have a few days where it skips for hours.

None of that stuff causes any significant palpitations.
Palpitations are generally caused by either structural defects, ischemia, or inflammation of the heart muscle that triggers electrical hot spots. These, or electrolytes being WAY out of whack.
Also, women can get PVC’s around the time of menses and perimenopause.
You may have had a sub clinical viral illness or something that caused some mild myocarditis. You’ve recovered and the inflammation has hopefully resolved.
Interestingly, almost a third of COVID patients were noted to have developed clinically significant PVC’s.
About 6 weeks ago I woke up not feeling 100%. Felt warm and and a little sour in the gut. I was also palpitating something fierce. No exertional symptoms but could feel skipping beats. Thought I was in a-fib or something.
Colleague did an EKG and I was throwing hella PVC’s. Bigeminy and trigeminy episodes. But felt fine.
Normal echo and serial enzymes. CAC score negative. Holter confirmed PVC burden of 8%.
Lasted about 3 weeks and steadily improved. Now resolved and feeling normal.
A week prior, my son had COVID. My theory is that I had a sub clinical infection when I wasn’t feeling well that initial day. Probably a mild viral myocarditis and now I’ve resolved it.
    Fingers crossed!

I went to my doc when I had heart palpitations and elevated heart rate too! I realised I can't run up a flight of stairs like I used to, blamed it on being unftt after pandemic but one day I came home from work feeling particularly bad and I finally made the apt.
After a few basic tests (inc EKG which was fine) it turned out I had severe anaemia.
Apparently my heavier periods weren't as normal as I thought. I thought perimenopause and didn't think it's sth to go to dr with...
But it was a fibroid. I had a surgery few months later.
Now I'm still not fit but my heart rate is back to 65 and I can run up a flight of stairs if I must 😅

The doctors in my area haven’t been taking me serious. I’ve had severe palpitations, pain under my left breast through to my back, constantly having to take in deep breaths, and feeling weak. I’ve recently started urinating constantly. I Literally urinate about thirty times a day and been sweating horribly. The doctor laughed and said it’s not my heart that I’m too young. I hardly drink caffeine. Maybe two sodas a month. I feel like something’s wrong. I don’t feel well and my fatigue has gotten worse. Help me Lord Jesus.

Keep checking with your Drs to run tests. Ask if it’s possible that you’re diabetic. Do your research so you know what to ask about. I hope you find answers so you can feel better.

Ohhhh Dr. Jen....please give up the soda. I was a Diet Pepsi junkie for YEARS. I have Fibromyalgia (and all the other unpleasant co morbid disorders) & Mitral Valve & Tricuspid Valve Prolapse...one day 3 years ago, my CNS went haywire. The culprit: the caffeine & loads of sodium in the 2-4 liters of soda I was drinking per day! I literally did not eat or sleep for 6 days! Ended up in the hospital. The palpitations & valve regurgitation was off the hook, which in turn revved up my anxiety level, which made the palpitations worse drove up, my BP. Bad bad bad. All bad.
You are such a lovely, beautiful, intelligent ray of light, I would be so sad if it took you down. Please quit the soda, drink WATER. I haven't had soda since May 31, 2020. And the palpitations & regurgitation are MUCH better...rarely happens now. If I can quit...you can too. I miss it sometimes, but I will never allow myself to drink it again. It wrecked me. I love water now. I drink A LOT of it.

I had the same symptoms and it is apparently hormones. Estrogen plays a big role. I am 56 and it seems to be Peri-Menopuase palpitations. I was originally told that it was A-fib when it first happened in the company of a nurse when going into a colonoscopy?? Electrolytes can throw off the rhythm and bad sleep. I have been followed for a few years now by a cardiologist and required no medication. EKG's done, echo cardiograms, etc. My heart reacts the same with stress, just before my period or during, and those hormonal fluctuations. Interesting!

You see dairy products are very poor quality here, plus hard to find and expensive, the locals probably get their daily calcium supple from eating small fish, bones and all, but not something I eat regularly....I started taking half a boiled, crushed to powder eggshell daily, after only 2 days no more palpitations.....so far!!!!!

I started having palpitations almost a year ago. I am 61 years old and in very good physical condition. They mostly came on when I went to bed for the night. This went on for a week before I reached out to my doctor. I went to my cardiologist and had a battery of tests including a stress test and calcium scan. All was good. I don't have them very often anymore except when I am taking a strength training class that includes cardio. When the palpitations come on it makes it hard to catch my breath and it reduces my physical performance and stamina. My doc prescribed Propranolol to take as needed. I now take a low dose, 10mg, prior to class. Sometimes it helps and sometimes it doesn't. Any suggestions or feedback would be appreciated.

I have mitral valve prolapse (leaky valve) and I’ve been told by my cardiologist that it may cause anxiety due to high heart rate. I’m also 44 and my ob/gyn told me that if I’m not missing any periods, that it’s not due to hormones/peri-menopause. It could be stress/anxiety, the MVP, sleep apnea and even lack of sleep. Caffeine, alcohol, smoking and any other stimulants will make it worse. I stopped drinking and haven’t drank coffee in over 10 yrs. Epinephrine and some cough medicines /decongestants can also induce high heart rates. It’s scary!!! I weaned myself off of Wellbutrin and for about 2 weeks I experienced the worse anxiety in 20 years. 🤦‍♀️

I am 20years. I first experience dizziness 6 years ago (I was 14yrs old) after getting tired from riding a bike to long distance. Since that time I've been experiencing dizziness till today whenever I do something tedious.
Currently, it has worsen. I am experiencing palpitations, shortness of breath, chest pains and dizziness. I sent it to some nearby clinic, they did some test with my blood sample and told me it's ulcer and gave me some drugs but it didn't work. So I sent it to a different doctor and he said I should go and do echocardiogram (scan) but because of the price I haven't done it yet.
Please is there anyone with some idea about my condition, hope I won't die?

I am currently going through perimenopause palpitations, same issue it comes randomly and then I am flushed with heat.
I have thoracic and lumbar scoliosis so T-1 through T-5 affects my heart rate.
I just remind myself that I am not dying and I pay attention to what I eat before I have palpitations.
Dairy will send me into an episode of palpitations heart racing as high as 167.
I just get in my massage chair and it relaxes my muscles and it drops my heart rate back to normal, I also hydrate with a bottle of water immediately upon waking.
    Aging is a journey.

I have the same symptoms like you but much worse was in and out of hospital seeing Specialist went through so many testings eventually it claims I suffered from ectopic heartbeats due to anxiety which is incredible cos I believe it may have got to do with vaccination which no doctor wants to associate that but I know my body well cos I was super healthy before that

Meditation is something your practice, not something you do. What I found that worked for me was practicing with external stimuli. When you're constantly thinking, you're inside your head. I took walks and watching anything. Birds, leaves, trees, cars, etc. When my mind would start to think, I would purposefully distract myself by attempting to concentrate on something that I see. Rinse and repeat. Took months to get somewhere useful, but it eventually helped. It's much easier for me to "just turn off my mind". And this is coming from someone with ADHD.
In my own personal experience, I found that when my pulse went high and all of my tests came back fine, I had mild hyper-ventilation that made me winded and vertigo. I had to practice taking deeper slower breaths. What really made this stick was when I started to do this during cardio. Pretending to yawn also helped. Nearly 6 months of practice before my natural breathing became deeper.

They again started last year which leads me to believe that alcohol and caffeine is the culprits. At 71 years of age I'm not giving alcohol or caffeine but my body is telling me to cut down

Get a CAC score and check for calcification. Especially if you have a family history of heart disease. This is not something to rationalize away. I did and now regret it. My CAC test took a few minutes and came back in the 99th percentile. I am normal bmi and my cholesterol is great. I had to ask for it specifically. You can also just get one done for very cheap at most medical centers. Ask your cardiologist about it. The doc will know what it is. Early detection is so important and it's inexpensive.

Do you drink milk? I have had heart palpitations on and off for years, but they seem to have gotten stronger the last year or so. I've been journaling and keeping track of food to see what could possibly be triggering them. Last night I discovered that the palpitations happen everytime I drink milk. I'm thinking that I may have a milk allergy and am going to cut it out to see if I see a reduction in palpitations.

@DrJenCaudle Another thing to consider is the positive feedback loop that comes from worrying about the palpitations. This increases the stress levels, which increases the palpitations , which increases the worry about the palpitations, etc... So once you received a variety of data that suggested that there's nothing seriously wrong with you, beyond a minor valve issue, you stopped worrying quite so much about it, which in turn broke that positive feedback loop, at least partially. Of course, that's just a hypothesis. By the way, I'm a renal physiologist who teaches at a medical, and I've had some of the same issues. One of the things that really works for me is a magnesium glycinate supplement taken with some vitamin D3/vitamin K2. Also regular aerobic exercise.
