    I personally think they advertised the boat as not floating because it has the sticker on the back, putting it in the water for some time might damage the sticker

      The coast guard boats are generally aimed at children and children would not care if a sticker got damaged.But a Lego ideas set aimed at adults witch they wouldn’t want to play with the set but display the model and if the sticker is damaged it looses its display value.

      @manticore5733 2 года назад +20

      Well maybe, but at micro-scale it might have been at a price I'd be willing to pay. The trouble with a lot of 'adult' sets is that they aim to make it as big as possible so they can set the price really high. Per piece count they might be reasonable but they're still (usually) single build sets.

      With the unique lens piece, lighting, motors, and size along with inflation and rising costs the price is reluctantly fair. Lower would be preferable but this is such a unique set in an expensive time that the high cost is not out of the question.

    Not worth $300, especially when they’ve relaxed so much on quality control. I’ve heard, and personally experienced cases of sets missing pieces, coming with the wrong colored pieces, misprints, mismolds, crumbled/creased paper/stickers, or a number of the above. Even if they kept perfect quality control, I still find it a stretch to ask for $300, but those reasons only make it so much more unjustifiable. If it is ever marked down or on clearance at a Target or Walmart, maybe I’ll consider it, but I’ll pass otherwise. I’m glad there will be people who can both afford and enjoy this set, though. I’ll invest my money in other sets and pieces, though.

    It feels like this set contains a lot of good parts for the Lego city builders out there and the fact that it comes with the electronic parts means the price of the set increases too much for them to possibly get a lot of them and part them out. So for future sets Lego should possibly consider having the electronics in an "expansion" set. This means that people can use that expansion set for multiple builds if they don't feel like buying a new motor and battery every time the get a similar set to this.

    Great review! I didn't care much for the original fan submission, but I think this is one case where Lego very much improved the final set. So basically the opposite of, say, the Jazz Quartet. It looks great, nice functions even when the light doesn't exactly seem very bright, and only a few things (mostly usual suspects like stickers) to nitpick on. The one thing I don't like is the price, €300 just seems way too much for what you get, even with the motor stuff included. The Old Fishing Store (21310) had 2049 bricks and costed € 160,-. This set has only 16 bricks more and sells for a whopping € 300,-. My guess on the boat is that it can't handle much weight before capsizing. It was fine with what was included, but if a custom build added more to it, it may sink.
    It's probably more of a case that it doesn't have enough buoyancy to pass Lego's quality control to make it an advertised feature, even though it technically can float in still waters.

    • @lucahermann3040
      @lucahermann3040 2 года назад +1

      @@joevictor53 The piece he suggested would require the angle to be sin⁻¹(¼), but the angle is actually tan⁻¹(¼).
      (Since the 1x4 tile is touching the side of the brick, it's actually the hypotenuse which is 4 studs long).
      So there is a difference of about 0.00245π (or ~0.44° for non-mathematicians).
      That's what I was referring to.
      The 1x4 tile and the 4x2 wedge would have overlapped a tiny bit, making it physically impossible.
      The model designers probably would have used a 4x2 wedge if they could, but geometry said 'no'.
      What they could have used is a 2x1x3 slope, but placed horizontally using some headlight bricks. The angle (sin⁻¹(5/17)) would have a bit closer to tan⁻¹(¼) than the angle they ended up using (sin⁻¹(⅓)), making the gap smaller and less noticeable.

Tan and Dark Blue baseplates would be amazing, I don't mind paying extra if the plastic is more expensive for those colors. had me laugh when you said that the price has not been shared yet and that you assume that it will cost between 250 and 300$ which would make it "more than fair". literally every reviewer that I've watched yet said the opposite.
    i really like what LEGO made out of the lighthouse that was submitted to the Ideas program, the switch to minifigure scale was a very good decision.
    I'm amazed that LEGO actually created a very complex, new piece - but still used a sticker for the mirror.
    since the set doesn't require a license, 200€ would have been a fair price - in my eyes the few electronic components are not worth additional 100€. btw it's 2022 and LEGO wants us to use non-rechargeable AA batteries. blows my mind

    • @TiagoCatarino

      Every other reviewer looks at LEGO sets and assumes that any LEGO set with a price higher than 10 cents a piece to be expensive regardless of what the pieces cost to produce. I’m not every other reviewer and I have a fair amount of knowledge about the inner workings of LEGO and their prices as a former employee.
      To your point I was hoping for a price of 250 given the incredible deals most LEGO Ideas sets are price per piece ratio wise. But for the review sake I also wanted to play it safe and not deceive anyone in case the price was indeed 300.
      Unfortunately my guess turned out to be wrong the set is indeed priced 300 which I do feel is a bit too much.
      I will still stand by what I said. 250, given the electronics would have been a more than fair price for the set.

    The reason Lego can go skyrocket with their prices is that people like you actually call a set with 2000 pieces for 300 bucks "more than fair". This is just ridiculous. This is max. 200 dollars. And those "expensive electronics" are not even close to being expensive in production. Lego is using simple technology without any magic to build them. There is nothing about them that justifies high prices like these.

      This sounds like a good idea for a MOC. Lighthouses come in a lot of sizes but if you want to make it taller maybe it wouldn't be too hard to duplicate the two center pieces of the tower. Use red slopes instead of white ones on those to get a white/red mixed colour scheme.
      You'd also have to extend the axle and the cable, which would be the only real problem here. Is soldering an illegal Lego building technique? :-)
