Question to the designers: When creating a marketable Lego Idea set, how much do you communicate with the fan designer, and how much do you listen to their input if you do?
I saw an interview where this same question was asked. They do a call weekly where designers show what they are working on and the fan designer can provide input and what they would like to be done differently. They also talk outside of these regularly scheduled meeting until each party is satisfied with the results:)
Tell us about how and why you design trees. Many MOCs are far more complex and detailed, but LEGO official trees tend to be simpler. Is it down to stability, cost, build experience? Thank you for the small leaf pieces in red too! :)
Here’s a question: Do the designers get instructions for the fan model or extra images to understand the build or do they have to figure out everything about the model from the uploaded images?
Why did the original charcters and backstory provided by the fan designer change as well, given that the set had to undergo so many changes due to stability and quality build standards already?
It's amazing that Lego can go from the utter failure of the Table Football to this magnificent set in just a few months. This one is a definite purchase. Nice review as always, Tiago.
Utter failure? It was sold out over Christmas. Granted they put it on sale, but it still sold well and does still sell well enough. It's not a perfect set but I wouldn't consider it an "utter failure" like the Hulkbuster or Black Panther, just because you personally don't like it.
@@IronFishChannel well, it had overwhelming negative reviews, both from buyers and from professional reviewers. For a newly released set to have a 30% discount from Lego themselves is extremely rare and for Brickfanatics to have it slated to retire in 2023, within a year of release is also extremely rare for an Ideas set. I personally like it actually, and would probably look to get it cheaply at some point (because I get all the Ideas sets) but with all the unnecessary parts for a grandstand and loads of extra minifigs and hair pieces it’s been vastly overpriced, hence those early discounts. “Utter failure” is probably a bit harsh, I’ll grant you, but it’s a real swing and a miss from Lego. I feel sorry for the original creator because they must’ve been extremely proud to be a submission winner, only for it to turn out like this.
@@danhodson7187 I would imagine the creator is thrilled just to have made it and couldn't care too much about the drama. It was really dumb of Lego to pump the price so hard with a bunch of minifigures though as if it weren't already customizable with literally any minifigures from your entire collection.
@@MrAssChapman What I feel like most people who follow Lego on RUclips and online and stuff don't realize is Lego is trying to grow their market beyond just them. The buyer they're catering to with this set doesn't have a "Minifigure collection" they can customize the set with, especially with all the new colors for skin tones included. The inflated price is true but "AFoLs" are such a small percentage of LEGO's current target demographic.
The Thor's hammer bricks and car door toilet paper are so clever. It's true they changed the original idea a lot, but I appreciate the nod to one of the creator's MOCs in the picture above the bed.
Maybe ask the designers why they changed the whole style of set, from a rundown, rustic build, to a tidy, clean, modern tourist type lodge. Thanks Tiago
This set looks excellent, especially with all the little details. I remember seeing similar-looking cabins in Ohakune (a small town here in New Zealand).
Questions to the designers: 1. How many times did you arrange a video conference with the MOC designer to talk about the model? 2. Was there anything at any stage that the MOC designer didn't like and you changed it afterwards? 3. How many sketch model iterations did you go through to reach the final satisfaction?
I really like each review you put out, the quality makes them very enjoyable. I am unable to afford Legos, but this allows me to keep informed and involved with something I love.
This set definitely doesn't take away too much of what the original designer created (especially on the exterior, although those trees are questionable). I will say, I actually prefer the color scheme used in this official LEGO set, but both designers of both models are amazing and they both look great. The designers did a nice job! Nice review!!!
My only complaint with how it looks is the way the trees on the right side look (a little too sparse / wierd shaped branches for that type of tree), otherwise I think the changes from the original submission are positive ones Well, that and that they could have given us a new recolor of that bird, rather than the 2 of the 3 colors that already exist.
The Bright Light Yellow butterflies first appeared in the Lunar New Year Display set. The Bright Light Orange recolor/reprint are supposed to represent moths, not butterflies.
Question: Did the designers get any inspiration from the Mystery Shack in Gravity Falls? I remember it being a Lego Ideas submission a while ago. Amazing build and stunning detail!
when i first saw the official pictures i didn’t really think it looked as good as the fan submission but the more i look at it the more i like it and also a lot of the changes lego made were necessary. for example the original did use some illegal building techniques which lego couldn’t have in the final set which gives the set a different look than the original
hey tiago i love your reviews just wanted to say thank you for addressing the gap at the top of your set. small things like this for some reason really matter to me so being aware of this definitely helps my decision for whether or not i end up buying this ( 4:42 ) great video as always :)
Very excited about this one! Due to not having a lot of room and my demographic (50yo woman), I am selective about which sets I build. I’m always thrilled to see ones that appeal to me!
Thank you for your review. I do plan to purchase this set to had it to the winter village scene that I am planning. It would be nice to have some seasonal options in the set. The current design has a fall theme, which can easily be passed on as summer as well. A winter theme with some white outlines to represent snow would have been great. Maybe Lego can develop an add-on winter scene kit to be sold separately. This would be such an innovative approach.
this set is super cool, out of my price range but something id love build someday. i especially love the moth flying towards the light at the front of the house lol
As a kid, I would always cram as much detail and things into tiny lego rooms, one because I wanted to save on using pieces for walls, but also because even irl I would always find more ways to sneak stuff into a smaller space, and I still do it. So seeing this build basically be the pinnacle of what kid me would have wanted, very very cool, might try to get it and build it for nostalgia and display it on my shelf
Such a gorgeous set. It is a bit dissapointing at how watered down the trees are, but it doesn't take away the spirit of the build. Still a beautiful buy.
This is a nice cozy cabin I think it would pair well with the RV from 2022 or the new off-roading set you know the one with the huge tires in the mountain bikes
Finally I've been dreaming about owning a lego design from Norton his work is amazing and now finally I can have one of his creation even though its been reworked to fit lego standards. Great review 👍
Fantastic review Tiago, your attention to detail is always on point. Really enjoy watching your content. I hope that you and the family are all keeping well.
I really want this set. Just gotta find the space for it. Question for the designers: Was it difficult to get the butterflies printed? I would think they would've already done it by now if it was an easy piece to print onto. Also, what did they think of the original model's loose plates? Did they have to figure out how to make it look similar, or did the idea come to them right away to use bricks along with brackets?
Just got this the other day and built it. I love it even more than I thought I would. It's just an incredibly well-designed set. Contrary to Tiago's opinion, I LOVE all the indoor decor and furnishings, and setting them up was a neat feeling for me. Like seeing up a doll's (which... I guess it is, honestly 😅 ). There were also some REALLY COOL building techniques where some of the pieces inside (like for the sink and the stove) went into and sometimes through the was to hang stuff on, or to be used as the multilevel wood paneling, which was its own set of cool building techniques. The only part I didn't completely enjoy were the two roof plates as they're identical, meaning you build one pattern twice. Other than that... It's a wonderful set with no real flaws imo. I've got this set on a shelf with 3 of the Red Fox 3-in-1's that have been built into all three options; Fox, Owl, and Squirrel. (And seriously, that Fox 3-in-1 might be the best one made. All three designs look and feel intentional, rather than one main design and two others just kind of slapped together. Give the Fox 3-in-1 set every award you can throw at it!) Anyway, fantastic set. I do recommend.
It seems like some people don't like the shift away from a rustic/ gritty hermit in the woods vibe. I think lego is trying to expand the interested audience, and many building techniques to make it rustic do not comply with Lego's strict building standards. This includes the trees. Overall I think the end result still has a wonderful feel to it. The story is open ended and is what the user makes of it.
You make a good point at the end there. I liked the rustic look, but hadn't realised that it would be perfectly easy to buy some more rustic looking bricks and sub them in
A nice and balanced review of this set. I've seen biased reviews of just pictures which clearly didn't understand that LEGO aims at a various public when 'upgrading' an Ideas set. However, the trees...........
No stickers 😱 Tiago, as I mentioned on your Instagram no matter review, bad or good, we will buy this set ASAP, but with info No Stickers we will buy two sets 😁💸 Thanks for reviewing it 😀
I would like to know why they decided to use a specialized piece for the door and the windows, instead of making them out of un-specialized pieces? Great set, thought!

Another cool Easter Egg is that when building the base there is a red 2×1 plate on the left and a green 2x1 plate on the right in reference to the nav lights of an airplane/boat
great set! and as always thanks for the lovely review Tiago :) can the original roof pattern be achieved on the official set by just not pushing the pieces in completely, or does the technique require different pieces?
Hey Tiago, thanks for all of your awesome videos, they really helped in turning me into a huge Lego fan that occasionally designs his own models! Just a quick question, is there a reason you quit as a Lego designer? You clearly have a lot of passion for the product, and the business relationship with the company appears to be very strong
The oars get me. They have oar paddle pieces that they use in the botanical sets. But when it comes to making an actual oar for a canoe, they go with a single mold piece instead of a paddle piece and a bar piece.
The single piece is more natural for this type of piece since it looks like wood. That single oar piece is for new "plastic oars" rather than natural wood ones if that makes sense.

great set! and as always thanks for the lovely review Tiago :) can the original roof pattern be achieved on the official set by just not pushing the pieces in completely, or does the technique require different pieces?
I believe so! Like you said, it will require you not to push the pieces all the way but yeah, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to do it.
